View Full Version : Help me choose which 70" set to get, SXRD or DLP?
andyisthemoney 08-03-07, 12:10 PM Im about to get a new TV, trying to decide betweem 70" Sony R70XBR2 and the 71" Samsung HL-T7288W. I also may go with the same model Sony but a 60", or the Samsung 60" super slim DLP. What do you guys think? I am a very heavy gamer, with a elite 360 and PS3. Since I bought the HDDVD addon for my 360, I now have both HDDVD and Bluray.
So what set should i go towards? Any opinions would be greatly appreciated.

Don't forget to look at the Mitsubishi 73734 and JVC 70FH97, both throw a pretty good picture as well, I'm in the same boat. I'm thinking the Sony isn't worth the $1500 premium and the Mitsubishi looks a little soft to me, leaning towards Sam or JVC, though both have weaknesses.
IMO, Samsung is a great option since it accepts 1080p over HDMI, component, and VGA. But you need to go look at them in stores to see which you like best (they are all excellent).
andyisthemoney 08-03-07, 04:37 PM I keep hearing the SXRDs are they way to go, but i wonder if the difference is even that noticable. I really like the ulta slim DLPs...

In last year's Home Theater 1080p shootout, the SXRD won. In this year's, Samsung won. IMO, one is not better than the other, or the way to go for one and all. It just comes down to personal preference. Buy what you like, and not what others claim is better (since neither one is better than the other)!

both actually accept 1080p correct? I heard somewhere that some TVs only display 1080p, but dont natively accept it. I hope i didnt just make an idiot out of myself lol
The 1st generation 1080p displays did not accept 1080p. The current 1080p Samsungs and Sonys all do.
brophog 08-04-07, 02:52 AM Right, it's just a matter of what inputs accept 1080P. The next model year suggests all 1080P sets will accept it over component, vga, and hdmi. This year, most only accept it over hdmi.
andyisthemoney 08-04-07, 11:43 PM Im trying to narrow this search for a new TV down, but looking around on forums can be very discouraging...
So many people say so many negative things about everything it seems, I keep second guessing myself. I really like the 60" Samsung DLPs, and thier cheap as hell. However the sonys srxds seem nice too
decisions, decisions
qwickdraw4 08-05-07, 08:20 AM how abt xbr5
now we are talking !!!
andyisthemoney 08-05-07, 09:06 PM how abt xbr5
lol i was honestly thinking about this too. The second I saw this thing I was hooked. I may just wait until december and drop the 6k, i think it would be worth the wait and extra money
Where can you see an XBR5? How much better is it than the XBR2, besides being thinner? The PQ of the XBR2 looked pretty darn awesome in Best Buy.
I was just looking at these TVs at fry's. The Samsung DLPs are definitely brighter than the Sony SXRDs. That seems to be true across the model line not just these particular models.
Cycling through the different picture settings and messing around with the custom settings the sony looked washed out & hazy compared to the Samsung. They were actually using a Sony Blu ray demo disc and there is one static image of a red mazda sports car (RX-8?) and the metallic red paint job had a depth and gloss on the Samsung TV that was just missing on the Sony. I have some concerns about DLP color wheels and light engine failures but otherwise picture quality wise i liked the samsung better. this was a little unsettling to me as I own the 60" XBR2.

Here (http://www.sonystyle.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?catalogId=10551&storeId=10151&langId=-1&productId=8198552921665156111) is the link to the television at Sonystyle.
It truely has potential to be THE benchmark in RPTV if it lives up to it's expectations
upinsmoke 08-06-07, 09:22 AM in looking at the prices between the 3000 series lcos and the xbr5 (using the 60" for comparison) there is a $2300 difference. Granted, these sets will not be going for these prices when they hit the street but that difference is still there. So in reality, the 60" 3000 woulc be around the area of $2200 I'm guesstimating.
Is it really worth the huge difference in price between the two sets? I'm sure the XBR5 will have an advantage, but that much of one?
suncom3 08-06-07, 10:25 AM the xbr5 does look like the way to go if you can afford it,retail listed at 6k should put it at around 4500 on the net

Seems like the way to go but I wouldnt be the 1st on the block to go out and get one until some valid reviews are in. Geometry is my 1st concern.
Dust Cover 08-08-07, 12:31 AM Samsung HL-T7288W. Don't look back.
