View Full Version : 2930 Audio Hookup Question
PLincoln 08-03-07, 06:58 PM Currently have my 2930 connected to my 2307 via analog outputs and a digital coax. I use the analogs for SACD, etc.
I've decided to pump the 2930 through the 2307 using the HDMI cable...more than anything it's just an exercise in getting familiar with all the formats. So I disconnected the coax since the HDMI cable can carry that information.
In the 2930 under the HDMI menu there are three settings.
2CH
The multi-channel audio signals are output from the analogaudio output and DENON LINK terminal.Down-mixed 2-channel audio signals are output from the HDMIoutput terminal.
MULTI (NORMAL)
The DTS or Dolby Digital signals can be decoded by theconnected TV or AV amplifier.(The HDMI audio speaker setting, etc., cannot be made.)
MULTI (LPCM)
Multi-channel audio signals are output from the HDMI terminal. The HDMI audio speaker setting, etc., can be made.
If I choose the 2CH setting, I still have access to my speaker size, level, and delay for the analog outputs under the AUDIO menu. However, audio over HDMI is downmixed to 2ch and I loose discreete DD/DTS. so clearly this would not be preferred.
BUT
If I choose either of the MULTI's that capability is gone, though it seems that the analog outputs themselves are still active. I can confirm this by switching to the EXT IN on the 2307. With the NORMAL setting I cannot set speaker size, delay, level in either place. With LPCM, I set them under the HDMI menu.
My question is...what if I want analog outputs for SACD and MULTI for HDMI? How do I go about setting that up if I cannot control the analog output config?
Kal Rubinson 08-04-07, 11:10 AM It is presumed that the speaker settings will be handled by the pre/pro or AVR if you are using HDMI for multichannel audio.

I'm not sure we're on the same page...
SACD can only be played via analog outputs on my 2930...yet when I enable audio over HDMI other than the 2CH, I loose control over my analog output speaker size, distance, and delay.
So essentially I need to decide whether I want to use HDMI for multichannel playback and sacrifice SACD OR do not use HDMI audio for multichannel and have the ability to play SACD....the only way to retain the analog output controls is the set HDMI audio to 2CH...and all that does is send 2CH PCM..so no DD or DTS via HDMI.
Also, when one enables HDMI LPCM the speaker settings need to be made on the 2930...when you set HDMI NORMAL then the AVR speaker settings are used. So you're statement is only half right since you need to differentiate which HDMI multichannel setting you are using.
So it appears that one cannot use HDMI NORMAL or LPCM and retain control over the analog output speaker settings. Which is fine I suppose since I don't need to use HDMI for the audio, but it seems strange that this is how they implemented on the Denon.
Kal, do you have the 2930 or 3930?
Kal Rubinson 08-04-07, 07:06 PM Nope. Only an old 3910. Have you confirmed that, when you switch back to analog outputs, you have lost your speaker settings? Or does the -930 series permit you to have both MCH HDMI and MCH analog outputs simultaneously?

the odd thing with that is, the distances are still there, but the speaker sizes have been set back to large. At this point I doubt it's something I am overlooking and the player merely works this way...not a deal breaker as I don't need HDMI audio from the 2930 anyways.
Kal Rubinson 08-05-07, 11:39 AM Well, I tried it with my 3910 and, yes, the analog speaker settings are blanked out with the HDMI-multichannel-normal setting but switching back to the HDMI-stereo setting, I see that all my analog settings are restored EXCEPT for speaker size! Very interesting. Had not noticed that before since I never use HDMI for any audio, only video. Perhaps my solution will work for you: Use the 6analogs for SACD/DVD-A, use the audio coax digital for all other audio codecs and leave the HDMI on 2 channel audio.

Kal,
That was my solution too. I don't currently need the HDMI multi-channel from the 2930 as I was really just testing to see how my AVR handled LPCM in the event I switch to one of the hi-def DVD formats. I wonder how other universal players handle this situation.
Thanks for taking the time to check it on your 3910.

ozdvduser 08-06-07, 07:52 PM The speaker size "reset" also happens on the 2910 - had me stumped for a while but ended up using it the way Kal has outlined:-
Use the 6analogs for SACD/DVD-A, use the audio coax digital for all other audio codecs and leave the HDMI on 2 channel audio.
I have just bought a 2930 and have a few questions about the set up that I hope someone can answer. I am outputting the video to my older Samsung DLP via a HDMI/DVI cable and my audio to a Yamaha RX-V757 via a digital co-ax. I will number my questions to make them easier to answer.
1. When I use the HDMI SELECT button do I set it to YCbCr or RGB, and, if I can choose what are the differences? (page 29)
2. Do I set the digital output in the Audio Setup to Normal (says DD and DTS are output as bitstream) or PCM, and, if can choose what are the differences? (page 23)
3. Should the Source Direct section of audio setup be set on or off? From what I can gather setting it to ON means I have to make the speaker adjustments in the DVD players settings and it outputs adjusted strength signals to compensate for speaker placement, however, my amp has the automatic adjustments for that also. If both the player and the amp do it I think the sound will be out, so which is the one I should turn off? The amps is a lot easier to calibrate as the amp has one of the remote mics for the job.
Thanks for any help you can give
