View Full Version : Gonna build a riser this weekend, any last minute tips? drunkpenguin 08-03-07, 10:08 PM show me your tips! :D McCall 08-03-07, 10:27 PM I assume you already know not to connect it to the walls and floor. are you builidng wireing into it? are you using it as a bass trap? are you putting bass shakers in it? Each one is different so kind of hard to give generic advice. use double plywood on top, you can use roofing felt between the layers and alternate the directions. BIGmouthinDC 08-03-07, 10:54 PM Plan for step lights and install before the deck goes on. http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b393/bigmouthindc/DSC00535.jpg Have a lip it makes the carpet install easier. gnolivos 08-03-07, 11:00 PM For mine, i absolutely have to attach it to the left side wall :( Either that, or leave a 3 inch gap... which I think is going to trap a ton of dust than cannot ever be removed. What's the big deal with the wall being attached? Carries vibrations to the walls? What's the big deal with the wall being attached? Carries vibrations to the walls? Yes it does, why three inches? it should be about a 1/2 from the wall normally. gnolivos 08-03-07, 11:20 PM I meant I can go up to 3 inch gap... 1/2 inch I guess is a good compromise. I would leave no lip on that side, I assume! I wonder how the carpet guy is going to finish it off on that side...? strange_brew 08-04-07, 07:39 AM McCall, are you thinking stage when you say not to attach to the wall? A riser can be attached, no? IIRC, the article Dennis Erskine did for Home Theater Builder said it is permissible. I'll have to go dig it up again and check... Jonnio 08-04-07, 07:45 AM I have buttkicker chairs on my riser and would not want it attached to the wall I don't think...even though its built like a tank and doesn't move that much. My theater thread is pretty much all about riser construction right now if you want to see a bunch of pics on how I did mine. http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=872315 strange_brew 08-04-07, 08:05 AM I have buttkicker chairs on my riser and would not want it attached to the wall I don't think...even though its built like a tank and doesn't move that much. If you're putting a sub on/in the riser or planning for buttkickers then I agree it would not be a good idea to attach. Apologies for the thread hi-jack, but Jonnio, I'm curious how you like the BK's mounted directly to the chairs? Jonnio 08-04-07, 08:26 AM pm sent to you strange_brew gnolivos 08-04-07, 09:01 AM So, in the case of a stage, it should not even be attached to the back wall? Now that would really look strange. BIGmouthinDC 08-04-07, 10:12 AM So, in the case of a stage, it should not even be attached to the back wall? Now that would really look strange. leave it a 1/4 to 1/2 inch shy and just cover the gap with carpet. Nobody will notice that the gap is there. McCall 08-04-07, 01:34 PM SInce my riser has butt kickers in it and a sub on it it is not attached and in general they should be free standing and movable, [yeah right, LOL] That is what most people do. I suppose it can be attached but I don't see any reason why it should be. And yes the stage is also not attached again it is just a slight separation 1/4 to 1/2" and is not visible so no it does not look strange. timatraw 08-07-07, 08:50 AM Hey DP, Did you build the riser ? drunkpenguin 08-07-07, 09:18 PM Yes I did. Turned out pretty damn good even. Its about 9' wide by 7.5' deep with steps on the sides. I'm still in the process of carpeting it (have to wait for home depot to get it in for me). Haven't decided whether or not to put lights in it. I really dont want any distracting lights anywhere in the theater. I'm kinda goin for that complete darkness experience. I'll post pictures when the HT is done. I dont have a lot of time to post as I go stuff. But it was pretty easy to build really. Its even curved to match the curve in my front seats. I used 2x12s and basically framed it like a wall would be framed. Then stuffed it full of insulation. Pretty basic construction really. The room should be done in a month or so. Or as my gf always says... "will we ever actually get to watch a movie in there or are you gonna just build and rebuild and build all the damn time?" :) Thanks for the tips! rboster 08-07-07, 11:14 PM Sounds like it going to turn out very nice. I like the matching curve idea. I do agree with you on the on the desire for total darkness....though since we entertain young and old...I do have rope lighting under the lip of our riser for times when we have guests that may need the assitance. gnolivos 08-07-07, 11:21 PM Im going to have two elements in the HT room that will add potentially unwanted lighting: a step light, and a backlit exit sign. Room is in total darkness otherwise. Not sure how this will turn out, but I plan to keep the wattage down as much as possible so it is not distracting, but functional. My Exit sign fortunately will be located at the bak of the room, where the entrance is located. That's about 12 feet from the rear row... |
