I have a Mag MA-32EF1AC TV and I just connected a Panasonic DMR-ES25 DVD player/recorder by HDMI.

On the DVD player, these choices are available for HDMI:
480p, 720p and 1080i
4:3 setting: full or normal.

On the TV set, there's normal, full, wide and zoom. Before HDMI, I watched TV in "normal" and wide screen DVDs in "wide" and all was good. I connected it with HDMI and all stays the same if I use 480p, but if I choose 720p or 1080i, aspect ratio gets screwy.

With the TV in normal, DVD player's 4:3 setting in normal, standard 4:3 feed becomes even more square, to more like 3:3. Put the TV in wide and the entire screen is filled, but stretched to fit.

While playing DVDs, aspect ratio isn't correct either in normal or wide. In "wide" setting on TV, there is a cropping of frame.

I'm getting seriously annoyed. I don't want to stretch to fit, but I want everything to be in proper aspect ratio. I don't wish to stretch/crop to maximize the screen area.

Set the DVD player to 16:9 for the display type, and choose normal for the 4:3 setting (that should pillarbox 4:3 material properly). Set the HDMI out to 720p since your screen is 1366x768p... that way, the set won't have to de-interlace and downscale 1080i. Either Normal or Full setting on your TV (not sure which) should result in correct aspect ratios being displayed with the DVD set to the above. Zoom and Wide probably will not.
