View Full Version : Panasonic DMR EH 575 - how to get 5.1 output?

I have this thing connected to an Onkyo 805 amp via hdmi pass-through (dvd->amp->tv) and I use 5.1 speakers.

Now, with DD or DTS movies, I get sound from all 6 speakers, HOWEVER the Onkyo only shows the FR and FL speaker indicators lit, which which (appearantly) states, that I only get stereo input from the DVD. Shouldn't six of those indicators be lit up?

You can set the DVD to "audio via optical" or "audio via optical + hdmi". There's no "audio via hdmi only" option - does this mean I need both optical + hdmi cable?

I have set audio for DTS and DD to "bitstream", as I use a hdmi connection.

Only two speakers showing. I was told in the Onkyo thread, that something has to be done on the player side here, but I have no idea what. Someone told me to set hdmi out to 5.1 - there's no such option, though. I can switch between DTS and DD in the DVD menu, of course. But that doesn't change a thing.

Thanks in advance for any help!

Need some further info:

First question is what's a DMR EH 575? - never heard of that model. I've heard of the EH75 and the EH55 but not the EH575.

Second question is are you playing a 5.1 source (i.e., commercial 5.1 encoded DVD)? If you are playing back from the DVD recorder's hard drive or a DVD recorded on the unit, you will only get DD 2.0 (and, depending on the OTA/analog cable source for that recording you may get pseudo multichannel audio encoded as Dolby Pro Logic - provided the Onkyo supports Dolby Pro Logic playback). The unit CANNOT record DD 5.1 and you will only get 5.1 out if you are playing a 5.1 encdoded disc. Even a cable box feed into the unit via the line inputs will be passed via the digital audio output as two-channel because the DVD recorder only accepts analog stereo line inputs.

Thanks for the reply, I have solved the problem in the meantime ... the thing was that the Onky amp's hdmi in didn't quite agree with the Panasonic's DVD hdmi out ... I added a digital optical cable for audio and only sent video via hdmi and all's well :)
