I am looking for a DVD player for my sister, she lives in Pittsburg PA but would really like to purchase and play DVD's made in the UK. She is currently using the DVD player in her computer to play the few Region 2 DVD's she has purchased from the UK amazon site but would like a standalone DVD player she can connect to a TV.

So, I think she needs a region free player that can also convert PAL based DVD's so they play on NTSC equipment.

I've been to the Oppo site and they list several players that claim to do the PAL to NTSC conversion but I did not see anything to suggest they were region free.

Any and all suggestions appreciated.

Thanks ... Tim

The first post in each of the Oppo Brain Dump threads has the key sequence to make the player region free.

I have the Oppo 981 and it is region free. I also just read a review in an Australian tech blog and the reviewer stated that the 981 is region free.

Thanks to all!

I've been away for a couple of days but I have checked out the Oppo web site and emailed them and it looks like it's very easy to make their players region free.

They did say I should look at the DV-981HD as this player is the only model which supports proper PAL 2:2 Cadence.

The Philips DVP 5982 can be be made region free and is a lot cheaper than the Oppo (over 3 times as cheap)

Here's a post from a user who thinks PAL playback is better with the Philips than the Oppo 970

Just to chime in with potentially another reason to purchase this unit over the Oppo 970......... I've had both units (returned the Oppo) and for some reason the PAL playback is better on both the Philips 5960 and 5982 machines than it was on the Oppo. I had a lot of frame jumping with the Oppo (particularly PAL DVD's from Europe) where these Philips machines play EVERYTHING from EVERY Region (PAL or NTSC) perfectly without a single flaw.
