View Full Version : Blockbuster B&M rentals for Blu-ray?
I have called all of the local Blockbusters in my area (Marlton, Cherry Hill area, NJ) and none of them are carrying Blu-ray movies. Does anyone work for Blockbuster and can shed some light on when they are supposed to be housing Blu-rays at their B&M stores? Thanks.
Slim GoodBooty 08-04-07, 11:42 AM I was told that the test stores got new discs and they would be slowly rolling it out in other stores, but they weren't in a huge hurry.
boogiem0nst3r 08-04-07, 11:42 AM hmm not sure on the national level, but the blockbuster down the street from my house has a wide (although not "complete" selection of blu-rays. theres small 1 slot wall on the new releases section, and about a 3-4 slot wall on the older movies.
rboster 08-04-07, 11:44 AM To get specific information in your area, you should contact the regional manager in your area. You can get that anme and phone number from a local store manager. I can tell you from experience it varies dramatically on which store will carry BR's. I would also guess from talking to a regional manager in Kansas City that those stores that were to receive them have them in stock....so if your store doesn't yet, most likely it won't until an expanded roll out takes place...and BB has not annouced anything of that nature.
Slim GoodBooty 08-04-07, 11:47 AM IT is kind of funny. There was a huge deal made about this and it has wound up being nothing. The test stores got more BD, but not all that many, and they also have been getting new HDDVDs as well. I rented 300 and Hot Fuzz on HDDVD on Thursday. They had a card for 300 on BD as well. That is a record for new HDM at Blobkbuster.
It is a little bit of a let down to not have the HDM locally here where I live. I consider where I live to be pretty good area and we have a huge Blockbuster at one of the locations. I will be stopping by today so hopefully I can speak to them.

The affects of things like this take time. From what I have seen at a local blockbuster that didn't rent either one before, it looks like the movies are renting pretty well. They don't have cards and so I'm going by how many seem to be left (and from counting the ones left once or twice), but looks like more are getting rented that I would have expected at this point. This store does rent them for $2.99 for a week, so I'm sure that helps though.

BDs are available in over 1400 store nationwide. The store where I rent in Independence, MO got it on July 10th - the day of the expanded rollout. Make sure your blockbuster is corporate owned. There are some that are franchises and they don't follow the same rules and may not get the BDs. The one I go to is corporate owned.
skoolpsyk 08-04-07, 02:18 PM My local one doesn't, but the local Hollywood Video store does. However they are more than regular dvds, renting at $4.99. So I'm sticking with netflix, which is costing me half as much since I get 2 a month for $4.99...
Do the Blockbuster stores rent blu-rays at the same price as dvds?

I finally found one.... I have to pass about 3 Blockbusters to get there, but well worth it.
Call all of them in your area and you should find one... but remember, some of the workers still dont know what they are, and may tell you they dont have them.
It would be nice if Blockbuster stated which ones carried them in their store locator.
Mine cost $4.99, which is $0.70 higher than standard DVD.

Now "it takes time". A month ago it was the final bullet.
Forgot to answer your question. It is nothing in the large sense at least at the moment. It is something for me, because I can trade in the HDDVD/BD I get online for different ones. I usually have 4 or 5 on hand at all times. Try that with Netflix.

Good for you :) Welcome to Blockbuster High Def.. :)
The only local Blockbuster I didn't check has Blu-ray. They have 15 shelves with 8 movies on each shelf. That is 120 Blu-ray movies for rent! The only problem I see is that I don't believe they get the newest movies on Blu-ray, only what I guess the corporation gives them. I was also speaking with another Blockbuster branch about when they would be getting them in and he said it depends on how it goes with the other local chain. If there aren't many Blu-ray rentals I could definitely see Blockbuster not carrying them in the stores.
flyersfan 08-05-07, 08:24 PM The only 2 that I visit in my area, Allentown PA, both have Blu-Ray. One of them is carrying around 70 titles, the other must be over 100.
Jiffylush 08-05-07, 08:53 PM The two blockbusters closest to me don't have them.
But I can pass one on the way to and from work that does so it works out ok for me.
Only problem is that I have been using BB and Netflix for rentals for months, so I have seen all the older stuff I really wanted to watch. Most of what I want to see is the recent releases and they usually don't have them in the store before I get them from Netflix or occasionally BB.
So basically even though a store near me carries them and has a good bit, I end up renting older stuff for the kids or new stuff from Universal.
