Well my grandfather has a setup in our basement with some bw 600 series speakers and a panasonic reviever and a dennon dvd player. Basically my problem is this something is not hooked up right....we purchased some cheaper dvd audio cables about 60 bucks and i hooked them in and went to play some discs some of the vocals seem distant and sometimes not there at all....on tommy there is no vocal track that u can hear but the music sounds awesome. i tried changing some settings and nothing has worked and I also re hooked the cables up about 10 times. Could something be wrong with the way the speakers are connected to the receiver he did something with banana plugs like bi wiring or something that might be it there idk?

are you getting sound out of all the speakers? Is there a center speaker? Check the settings in the dvd player for the multichannel outputs. Check the wires, make sure everything is plugged in correctly.

and there is a center speaker
I'm confused about your setup. This is for surround sound, as in sacd or dvd-a? You do have an sacd/dvd-a player? You are hooked up via 5.1 analog? What do you mean by "cheaper dvd audio cables 60 bucks"? Both the dvd player and your receiver do have the 5.1 analog hookups, right? And your disk is an sacd or dvd-a?

No vocals on Tommy sounds like you're not getting a center channel. If I remember the mix correctly, most of the vocals are isolated in the center. On other recordings, the vocal is often placed primarily in the center with reverb in the LF and RF. Your description is exactly what I would expect with no center channel. ($60 cables should be fine as you mentioned the music you're getting sounds awesome.)
My guess is you either have A.) A loose connection somewhere in the center channel chain or, B.) You've got something misconnected. My guess would be you've flip-flopped your center and subwoofer channels, most likely between the player and the receiver. - I know, you've checked, but triple-check. I'd bet a nickel it's one of these two issues.
I did this once because the 6-audio connectors on the back of my receiver were identical to the ones on my player except the Sub and Center were reversed.

Another possibility is that the use of the Banana connectors has inadvertently introduced a phase reversal somewhere along the line.
