View Full Version : Cheap deck lights for stairs? drunkpenguin 08-05-07, 04:41 PM 20-30 bucks a pop for these tiny little lights is ridiculous! I can buy a large lamp for less than that. So where are you guys buying these things? otay 08-05-07, 09:53 PM That's about how much I just spent, didn't think it was too bad... Guess I haven't made enough posts yet to put the link in here, but it was ccl-light dot kom. I also ordered rope light. McCall 08-06-07, 03:32 PM if you are talking about low voltage outdoor lights you might want to rethink that option. you can play havoc with noise on your lines with low voltage. unless everything is dedicated circuits. gnolivos 08-06-07, 08:30 PM Im in the same boat!!! The ccl website will only sell order above $100. Ridiculous. I called, and they said no exception. I would have paid the $30 to get it over with, but they wouldn't budge! Still looking for something like these (http://ccl-light.com/docs/outdoor/step_deck/recessed/prlb-hl/hires120v.html) . tmnjus 08-06-07, 09:40 PM I got 2 of those (very similar - 6" x 4") at Menards. If you don't have a Menards, check HD or Lowes. I paid something like $12 each. They are not low voltage, and take up to a 60W bulb. I am using a 25W blue bulb, and have them on a dimmer. Tom gnolivos 08-06-07, 11:18 PM I have no Menards here, although I do see one online at Lowes: (Link (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?p=11235858#post11235858) ). Problem with this one is that it is for A19 bulbs. I doubt there are 5-7 watt bulbs in this A19 size. Putting a dimmer is a little more complicated than I'd want at this stage of my project. :( Also, now that I think about it, I want this to light up only in the dark. Argh! Perhaps I do need something like a Photoelectric light switch. Im going to google this... tmnjus 08-07-07, 12:18 AM Dimmer shouldn't be any more complicated than a photelectric switch. I have mine on Insteon switches, and can dim them from my chair. At 50%, the bulbs are bright enough to light the steps without being a distraction. (Very dark blue bulb...). The issue I see with a photoelectric switch, is that when you leave the room, and turn off the lights, these may come on (if you forget about them and don't shut them off manually). A motion sensor may work better, depending on the layout of the room, etc. Here is a light at HD similar to mine: http://www.homedepot.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?storeId=10051&productId=100464093&langId=-1&catalogId=10053&cm_mmc=1hd.com2froogle-_-product_feed-_-D27X-_-100464093 And here's a site that sells both LV and 120V (but I wouldn't do LV in the theater): http://www.ccl-light.com/docs/outdoor/step_deck/subindex.html Tom YW84U 08-07-07, 12:56 AM If you want something different, have you considered LED? http://i123.photobucket.com/albums/o306/YW84U/IMG_2728.jpg That was before I sprayed them satin black to go with my dark motif :D $13.25 from Pegasus Associates http://www.pegasusassociates.com/products/NightLights/LEDNightLights.html Photosensor, rocker switch, 120 volt, no heat and can be left on 24/7 for mere pennies a year. Not as bright as an A19 bulb, but maybe enough for your needs? gnolivos 08-07-07, 07:43 AM Tom, How do you like the color of the LED? Isn't it too blue, as are most LEDs? YW84U 08-07-07, 12:31 PM The LEDs are a white with a slight blue tinge, but I've grown kinda fond of them. I'm trying to find a picture that shows the hue - this is about the best I have so far: http://i123.photobucket.com/albums/o306/YW84U/IMG_3508.jpg If you wish, I can try and take a better shot tonight so you can gain a better sense of the color output of them. Wish I had a tripod :D gnolivos 08-07-07, 12:36 PM Yes, that's the color I imagined they were... I'm too picky...! I like the warmer hue that the incandescent lights provide. Thanks for sharing. gnolivos 08-07-07, 06:10 PM OK, here's what I found (and purchased) today... Juno Step light at Lowes (LINK to model # ICTC113-840W (http://www.lowes.com/lowes/lkn?action=productDetail&productId=112836-38269-ICTC113-840W&lpage=none)). It's 120V, although it is white. Flat paint will fix that... I recommend using Rustoleum Fire High Heat paint.... EDIT: Almost forgot to mention! This uses A19 bulbs, but Lowes has an A15 bulb (same base fits) rated 15W. Perfect!!! http://images.lowes.com/product/converted/661209/661209040329md.jpg |
