I'm currently pondering getting a replacement for my Sony KP51HW40. It's an older CRT 1080i/480p set. Part of the reason I'm pondering replacing it, is the fact that it can't do 720p. When using a Playstation 3, this becomes a very big problem with certain games and things. Basically, I'm thinking that the time might have come for me to get a new set that has HDMI and all the other bells and whistles, of course, I'm not the type to spend big bucks. 720p would be perfectly fine for my viewing distance, 1080p would be a total waste. I've seen some HDTV's advertised in the 1 grand range that seem like they could be a good contender, but I honestly don't know scrat about any of the current DLP and LCD rear projections that are available nowadays. It's possible I could sell my Sony used for like $450 or so (if I'm lucky), so I'm thinking if I can find a good 720p set, for a grand, it's basicaly costing me $550 to upgrade. Which sets should I be considering? I'm a bit more partial to DLP, because I like my blacks truly black.

distance, distance, distance.....
In Real Estate, they say it's all about location, location, location, but when it comes to 1080p displays, it's all about the viewing distance. At a given viewing distance, 1080p becomes a complete waste of money, because the human eyeball is only able to perceive so much resolution at a given distance. If you can sit really close to your 1080p display, or if you have an absolutely ginormous 1080p display, then 1080p matters. But if you are sitting a good distance from a 1080p display, then you are basically flushing your $700 down the toilet. (it seems that $700 is the difference between 720p and 1080p).
In my living room, I currently have a 51 inch widescreen Sony, and I'm sitting a solid 11 or 10 feet away. I would most likely put a 52 incher, or a 50 incher in that spot, and my viewing distance will remain the same. If I had a 1080p set, I would need to sit 7 feet or closer for my eyeballs to actually register the improvement in resolution over 720p. My sofa is backed against the wall, and that is where it's gonna stay, so 1080p is a complete waste for me, when it comes to my living room.
