View Full Version : Starship Troopers BD in UK now from Buena Vista
cybersoga 08-06-07, 07:12 AM I just got Starship Troopers. Picture quality is superb. VC1 encode. Here's some photographs from my 1080p LCD running at native resolution...
PQ varies from scene to scene. One or two scenes look like they have had the sharpness turned up (slight EE) and grain makes an appearance now and then. The fact it's only a couple of scenes makes me think this was done in the films post production and not the fault of the transfer. Most of the film looks great, a very highly detailed picture which looks almost like looking through a window, no banding or noticeable compression artifacts. No noticable dirt/scratches.
Brajesh 08-06-07, 08:10 AM Thanks. UK versions of certain movies tend to have BBFC cuts for violence. Any such cuts in this?

madpoet 08-06-07, 09:47 AM Thank god, mine is on it's way and I would have been pissed if I couldn't play it ;)
johnnyknoxsvill 08-06-07, 09:59 AM Mine has also shipped today, I should have it early next week. I hope its worth the $41 I paid for it.
HiddenDepth 08-06-07, 10:09 AM Nice! The PQ looks pretty good :)
Cant wait to pick my disc up.
tkbryant 08-06-07, 10:16 AM Nice! The PQ looks pretty good :)

Interesting to hear it's a VC-1 encode. Buena Vista hasn't used that codec in a while. Not since Casanova or Flightplan if I remember correctly.
Where's some sites to import into US? Depending on price, I may import rather than wait for US version IF this is truly region free.
Thanks for the help.
Brajesh 08-06-07, 10:30 AM Good to hear about no cuts, but $41 from Amazon UK. Pricey!
rover2002 08-06-07, 11:02 AM lol never mind, as above :)
I wonder how this looks compared to the version I taped off of SHO-HD sometime back?
madpoet 08-06-07, 11:49 AM I got it straight from Amazon.UK. Shipped yesterday.
johnnyknoxsvill 08-06-07, 11:56 AM where is a good site to get actual rate exchange prices? The UK uses Euros correct?
madpoet 08-06-07, 12:09 PM Google it. Type in something like "30 Euros in U.S. Dollars" and it gives you an answer.
briankmonkey 08-06-07, 12:16 PM How is the audio on this?
charlie angel 08-06-07, 12:26 PM where is a good site to get actual rate exchange prices? The UK uses Euros correct?
http://www.xe.com/ucc/ is an excellent exchange rate site - & we use pounds sterling, not Euros, in the UK :)
briankmonkey 08-06-07, 12:39 PM It's definitely a different mix from the DTS track on the US superbit DVD, which sounded like they turned up the volume in a lot of scenes (like the music at the dance). I believe this has more dynamic range than the superbit DVD. Moderate use of LFE, but not over powering. Sound quality is fine.
Thanks. Should have clarified, no lossless codecs (LPCM or TrueHD)?
cybersoga 08-06-07, 12:46 PM Thanks. Should have clarified, no lossless codecs (LPCM or TrueHD)?
I was listening to the standard DD track. Here's the audio options.
PooperScooper 08-06-07, 12:48 PM I wonder how this looks compared to the version I taped off of SHO-HD sometime back?
Well, you won't know till you compare. :) I forgot about this release. I just ordered it from Amazon. Too bad the dollar sucks against the pound. Although this movie is almost like The Fifth Element. I can watch it over and over for some reason.

briankmonkey 08-06-07, 12:50 PM I was listening to the standard DD track. Here's the audio options.
Thank you! Sweet 5.1 Unccompressed it is! I suggest trying it out, even two channel, if that is all you can do. I've found myself preferring 2.0 LPCM over 5.1 at times I can't do 5.1 lossless (friends house).
Jim Morrison 08-06-07, 12:53 PM Ordered mine from HMV UK - can't wait until it turns up!
Donnie Eldridge 08-06-07, 02:27 PM Interesting to hear it's a VC-1 encode. Buena Vista hasn't used that codec in a while. Not since Casanova or Flightplan if I remember correctly.
I wonder if the US version will be AVC?
tkbryant 08-06-07, 02:53 PM I wonder if the US version will be AVC?
I'm sure it will, considering it will be released in the U.S. by Sony/Columbia Pictures.
Wonder if that had anything to do with the recent delay of the U.S. version?
Should look spectacular, the previous Buena Vista VC-1 encodes had very high bit rates.
I just checked on my package with DHL. Will be here tomorrow. :)
I cant' wait to crank this baby UP!!
eww that plays on ps3 sticker makes want to vomit. i sure hope it's easy to remove and won't leave any residue on the case.

Don't worry; those stickers are indeed easy to remove without leaving residue.
sharkcohen 08-06-07, 03:02 PM Damn, this one film makes me want to get a Blu-Ray player.
darkjedi664 08-06-07, 04:37 PM Is this disc work spending $41.10 just for the disc, not including shipping? I dunno about that one :\
*edit*
Seems Amazon UK lowered the price to Ģ17.23, so with 6-10 day shipping it comes out to $41.25. 1-2 shipping makes it out to $65! No thanks. So I did 6-10 day shipping, much nicer. Though it's about $20 more than I wanted to pay, but the fact that the US wont see it anytime soon, I'll take my chances.
Well, you won't know till you compare. :) I forgot about this release. I just ordered it from Amazon. Too bad the dollar sucks against the pound. Although this movie is almost like The Fifth Element. I can watch it over and over for some reason.
larryConsidering I already have an OAR DD5.1 version on DVHS off SHO I'm not going to spend $40 to import it. I can wait.
madpoet 08-06-07, 05:33 PM Yeah, I did slow boat shipping. Wasn't worth twice the cost just to wave around my shiny new toy ;)
Buckaroo Banzai 08-06-07, 09:21 PM Considering I already have an OAR DD5.1 version on DVHS off SHO I'm not going to spend $40 to import it. I can wait.
But don't you want a high quality version, not that low bit-rate HD Lite stuff off cable or satellite?
J Brinkley 08-06-07, 09:43 PM Well, the old Showtime version was long before the days of bitstarving and is certainly a good holdover, but it isn't a state of the art HD transfer. It is a terribly dated and I'm sure its state factors into the US BD release delay, if Sony hasn't gone back and retransferred since that version. I certainly wouldn't want to see SHO's version on BD, and I can imagine the hysterics around these parts if they did.
I wonder if the BVE version is their own master or if they are shared elements with Sony?
But don't you want a high quality version, not that low bit-rate HD Lite stuff off cable or satellite?Sure I'd like to see a higher quality version, but there's nothing "low bitrate or HD Lite" about it. I have Comcast which shows a pure direct feed, and I taped it years ago, long before SHO started their on screen pop-up ads during movies.
hollywoodguy 08-06-07, 10:43 PM Interesting to hear it's a VC-1 encode. Buena Vista hasn't used that codec in a while. Not since Casanova or Flightplan if I remember correctly.
Deja Vu was VC-1 and looked absolutely spectacular.
eightninesuited 08-06-07, 11:07 PM Deja Vu was VC-1 and looked absolutely spectacular.
I think it holds the record for the highest bitrate ever. 48mbps peak I think.
Can't wait for this one. One of the best cheese movies ever!
Cutthroat Island with Gena Davis comes to mind as well.
Great cheese!
Dan Hitchman 08-07-07, 01:10 AM How do we know Sony won't do a brand new transfer using better source material for their release of Starship Troopers? I don't think they want the debacle of another Fifth Element.

Dan
This BD of Starship Troopers looks as good if not better than Sony's remastered Fifth Element.
I'm still waiting for the cheaper on. No need to hurry with so much coming now and later this year.
cybersoga 08-07-07, 07:03 AM I'm still waiting for the cheaper on. No need to hurry with so much coming now and later this year.
Well if I lived in the US, i'd probably still wait for the US release from Sony, it's bound to be cheaper than importing from the UK.
sarah99 08-07-07, 07:10 AM Starship Troopers just arrived and it looks pretty good.

Ferdopa 08-07-07, 09:53 AM Incredible PQ/AQ release.
Excelent contrast levels, great definition in the most part of the film.
Very, very good.

DanNobody will know until the US version is released. It should provide for some interesting comparisons between the two compression codecs. Though, it won't be a true apples to apples comparison if they are from different sources.
pteittinen 08-07-07, 10:41 AM Finnish release takes place in October, so to tide me over, I ordered this from Amazon.uk. It's a guilty pleasure of mine, I couldn't wait :)
ryoohki 08-07-07, 11:08 AM Btw this release have been delayed indefinitly in the US...
cybersoga 08-07-07, 11:51 AM 3 more LCD screen photographs, it looks better than this IRL, but it gives you an idea...
Donnie Eldridge 08-07-07, 01:26 PM Btw this release have been delayed indefinitly in the US...
Unfortunately, a fact we are painfully aware of. :(
Adam_ME 08-07-07, 01:34 PM For those who've received it, 2 questions:
1) Is the PCM track 16-bit or 24-bit?
2) Is the packaging extra thick like a normal DVD case?
Thanks.
TObject 08-07-07, 02:00 PM I just got a message from Amazon Japan, that my order was delayed until September 19th. It seems like ordering from UK is a better option.
Robert George 08-07-07, 02:31 PM I guess this is still rather popular, despite the import premium. Amazon.uk is now sold out. Glad I got my order in last night as it shipped today. I haven't watched this guilty pleasure in a while and the BD should be a fun watch.
johnnyknoxsvill 08-07-07, 02:55 PM How many of you guys got 3-4 day shipping?
DeathStalker2 08-07-07, 03:40 PM I cant wait for mine to get here. Should be getting it by the weekend.
I already got started on a custom cover for it and I'll finish it up once it arrives. Should look good in the blu case.

It has a couple of short featurettes, no commentary unfortunately.
Ferdopa 08-07-07, 04:18 PM The package is the same that Sony use with PS3 games... but in blue color.
The extras are: showcase and DVD original features (making of, trailer, deleted scenes main characters casting...)
The PCM track is English 4.6 Mbps.
The disc is region free... because I use a Japan PS3 :)

No way!! Man this disc is just getting better and better. Thanks! And to think I wasted all this time.
Need confirmation on the shower scene please! :)
It's what is holding me back from ordering........... hush you!
HiddenDepth 08-07-07, 05:12 PM 3 more LCD screen photographs, it looks better than this IRL, but it gives you an idea...
Man, those screenshots looks GREAT, especially the 3rd one! Thank you.

pteittinen 08-08-07, 02:00 AM ^^ You're not alone in that.

Sweet. Every movie from both formats should use those cases.

Could be better but it's more than acceptable.

excellent
shadowrage 08-08-07, 02:17 AM Shower scene? Pfft. What about the plasma bugs and the ambush(I'm still talking bush, uh-oh). I really want to spend $40 on this, but I don't know. Damn.

Besides, please post a picture of yourself completely butt naked so the girls can judge you, the same goes for the other complainers :-)

good
I don't think film in 1996 (production year) where done in 24 bits... 5th element master is 16bits and it's around the same years.. 24bits production are fairly new..
Even Spiderman 1, the master is 16bits but the TrueHD will be 'Upscaled' to 24..
It was $34 delivered from sendit.com. (to WA)
It's coming up at $39.69 shipped to WI right now. :(
Dave Mack 08-08-07, 07:45 PM $2.69 difference? Go for it, nyg!!!
:)
$2.69 difference? Go for it, nyg!!!
:)
Two people have stated today that they're getting it from sendit.com for $34 shipped. I'm just trying to figure out how that's possible. ;)
A difference of $6 or less is one thing, I'm more concerned with seeing if Sony relists this title for release here in the States soon. After all, my Amazon order for $17.95 shipped hasn't been canceled. So under $20 or near double that for the import. Damn you Sony why must you torment me so! ;)
Dave Mack 08-08-07, 08:21 PM I think if there IS a new film coming out next summer, they will release it then to tie-in.
Is it worth $34 to have it 10 months early...?
Man, I used to drop double that in a nite of drinking back in NYC..
:)
tkbryant 08-08-07, 08:43 PM Just got my copy today along with The Island, finally!
Took some pics, but will post later, I wanna check out TMNT and Final Fantasy first. Feels like Christmas today! ;)
First impressions, the outdoor battle scenes look intense. Very very clear, sharp and loads of details. The interior scenes of the ships kind of take a little hit, grainier than other scenes almost like they were filmed with different cameras. Overall, I am pretty impressed with it. Alot of scenes look like they were filmed yesterday. I will watch the movie in its entirety before saying anymore.

I would think this new film would be direct to video. So a 'tie in' wouldn't cross their minds. IMO.
Dave Mack 08-08-07, 11:49 PM Sure it would, I think. Direct to video sequel. New video release of ST.
Market them together.

Oh, man! You've just made me fearful they'll pull a Spider-Man now.
I'll get the deluxe ST I've asked for at $50, or a box set with all 3 for a few bucks more. NOOOO!
Of course if the third film is half decent, I'll want it. I'll still hold out small hope it gets picked up for a theatrical run.
gandley 08-09-07, 04:07 PM i thought the disc was a mixed bag, it has some excellent exmples of HD, but then some of the almost worst as well, couple of scences are pretty bad. overall the bits that need to be good, are, so thats a let off. I didnt like what look like excessive noise in the blue plasma bursts from the bugs butts, just before they nuke em.
the HD version definatly requires you to have a stronger stomach and on the whole is a good disc.
I definatly want to compare this release with Sonys AVC version when it finally arrives as i dont think this was the best it could of been. could be the master though, but at times the film gran seems to turn into a bit of a noisy mush.
(the dropship scene where the veteren solidier shuts the door is a good example, up to the point where he tells hiss noobs to "remember there training". I dont recall the superbit version looking as bad there, but ive seem to have misplaced it)
overall, not bad though, you really can see denise has some excessive facial hair going on :D
sharkcohen 08-09-07, 04:12 PM The scene in the dropship is very grainy on the Superbit SD disk.
The scene in the dropship is very grainy on the Superbit SD disk.
But wouldn't Verhoeven have wanted that scene to resemble D-Day footage as much as possible? It may be intentional, much like the graininess in Aliens, also trying to emulate war footage.

Thats possible, but it dosent look that way as it only seems to look really bad as the dropship door is closing. the contrast seems to go out of whack as well.
(just got an email to say my BD version of Gangs of NewYork has been posted, ah happy days)
Thanks to all you A**holes, I just completed my order :D
Looking forward to it ;)
narcopolo 08-10-07, 10:10 AM Starship Troopers is back in stock at amazon.uk and my order is in "dispatching soon" status so I should have it in about 8 days.
Paul Arnette 08-10-07, 10:16 AM Thanks to all you A**holes, I just completed my order :D
lol Well, said. After I just dropped a forty on Starship Troopers, I couldn't very well cancel my Heroes pre-order at $60 like I was consider either. A double-whammy!

I just told my gf it cost me 20.
I just neglected to mention that was in British Pounds :D
Steve S 08-10-07, 01:43 PM I played this last night on my PS3 and it was truly eye candy for the most part. Some scenes, particularly in the brain bug cave were noticeably grainy but I can only conclude that this is the way it was filmed. According to the info display on the PS3 this was encoded with VC1 and runs at a quite high bitrate, peaked at 42.5 mbps during some action scenes (notably when Rico is riding the tank bug and during the grainy brain bug cave scenes). It's a very much gorier film in HD, I can understand why the Brits rated it "18"
(equivalent to an NC-17 here).
Brajesh 08-10-07, 02:07 PM Caved in and ordered 'Starship Troopers', 'Crimson Tide' & 'The Rock' BDs. $102 shipped from sendit. Pricey, but looks like these are all worth it.
Neo_Reloaded 08-10-07, 02:39 PM Got mine from Amazon.co.uk last night. Pretty great PQ in some scenes, pretty bad in others. Grain fluctuated - some shots were super grainy, others had much less. Skin tone was very orange as well... though I haven't seen the film in many years so I don't know if that's a transfer issue or simply the print.
Good flick. The arachnid CGI was done very well, holds up very decently. Certainly nothing stunning, but it's done in a very low-key way so you can watch it without being taken out of the experience or thinking "good god that's bad CGI!"
darkjedi664 08-10-07, 03:55 PM I got mine last night as well, I was VERY surprised at how fast it shipped here :D Can't wait to watch it this weekend!

When did yours ship out and did you order from amazon UK?

Ha. Mine just arrived as well. Thanks for the info.
Dave Mack 08-10-07, 06:36 PM Both the DVDs od ST were grainy. That's how the film looks.
I'd rather have it grainy and accurate than DNR'd to death and artificially scrubbed clean...
I just told my gf it cost me 20.
I just neglected to mention that was in British Pounds :D
LOL! :)
I'm still resisting the temptation to import cause I feel Sony will reannounce the USA one as soon as the UK one is in my hands.
darkjedi664 08-10-07, 08:34 PM 2 day shipping from the UK to the US? I'd do it! Oh, I did :D
Mr Ian B 08-10-07, 08:46 PM Mine shipped from Sendit.com on 8-10-07. How long can I expect before I get it here in Texas?
Thanks,

Remember, it's an UGLY planet! A BUG planet!!!!

You do know what happened to the last guy who uttered that, eh? ;)
Starship Troopers just became one of my fav HD discs! What a beauty! I thought the audio level, PCM, was set a bit low. I had to apply more amplification than most BD's.
Jim Morrison 08-11-07, 12:41 PM These are the rules. Everybody fights, nobody quits. If you don't do your job I'll kill you myself. Welcome to the Roughnecks

:) Sometimes a little more headroom is good!
Geoff D 08-11-07, 03:39 PM For all the comments about grain, I have to say that I found it less grainy than Sony's Superbit DVD. The R1 SE looks like a VCD in comparison (very noticeable compression artefacts on that one). And the dropship interior shot matey mentioned above has always looked very grainy, almost like a dupe.
The PCM audio is absolutely superb. I picked out little details I'd never caught before and the bass is nice and deep.
It's a great disc folks, and well worth picking up. I swear that the CG looks even better in high-def. :D
Monoplex 08-11-07, 06:56 PM The picture and sound were terrific although there were a few dark scenes that really showed grain. But overall. . .oh boy!
The picture was sharp enough that you could see the peach fuzz on Johnny Rico's ears!
Dave Mack 08-12-07, 02:59 AM (just got an email to say my BD version of Gangs of NewYork has been posted, ah happy days)
Cool! Gandley, can U let us know how "Gangs" looks and if it's region coded?
I know they said it would be but ya never know! Thanks!

shadowrage 08-13-07, 03:28 PM So how is the PCM track? Better than BHD, POTC, or T5E?
I'll import this right now if it sounds as awesome as I think it will.
Mine shipped today from sendit WOO :)
And the charge posted to my CC.... not so wooo :( $40.66
darkjedi664 08-13-07, 05:21 PM Very good quality in certain scenes. However, when the troops are going down to Klendathu for the first time, it looks like ass. It's always nice to hear Sam Fisher speak :) 4/5 for the disc as a whole :)

No lossloss track but a good DTS score, it is only region B sadly and the AVC picture is at times excellent but somtimes a bit soft looking, however the murky colours look outstanding and detail looks pretty good. it a good movie and this is the best its looked. not a bad disc
Got my copy today, took exactly 1 week from Amazon UK which I thought was very good. I have to mention that it was tough to load on my Samsung 1000 with the latest fw. I had to try to reload the disc 2-3 times each time I try to play the movie. Once loaded the disc played fine. I'm guessing most people here are using a PS3, which probably works the best. I thought the picture and sound were excellent, much better than the SD-DVD. I don't think the US version will look any better, but we will see.

narcopolo 08-14-07, 01:15 AM I ordered it on the 6th, and it shipped on the 7th and I got it last night! How's that for shipping!
Mine has been in shipping soon status for 3 days now. Really annoying. The charge has already posted to my amex card.
shadowrage 08-15-07, 12:45 AM Oh sh34. I 'accidently' just ordered one. ;)
I didn't mean to click confirm. I bought the superbit for $12. This better be $40 awesome dollars of bug squashin.
I was probably just going to spend it on dippin dots(those things are wicked).
Why is air mail faster than media mail??? I mean it's already in america.
Onkyo10 08-15-07, 02:37 AM so something 's confusing me! you said it's region B but it plays on PS3 US??? I have ordered it on sendit and already shipped but didn't know it's region coded B....i own PS3 US...is there any issue?
Dave Mack 08-15-07, 03:05 AM That's The Crow and Gangs of NY that are region B, ST is not.
MSmith83 08-15-07, 04:03 AM That's The Crow and Gangs of NY that are region B, ST is not.
And from what I heard in another thread, The Crow (and possibly other BDs from this studio) implements the image constraint token (ICT). Would that mark it as the first BD with ICT enabled? This is not related to regional playability, but it's interesting nonetheless.
MSmith83 08-15-07, 04:09 AM To make an on-topic post, I ordered the Starship Troopers BD today and I've never seen the movie. I better like this one.

I love it.

Wish I had seen this earlier, didn't know it was region free!
Just ordered it from amazon.

TObject 08-16-07, 09:34 PM The picture quality is very good. In comparison to the 1998 US Columbia TriStar Home Video release there were no scenes cut from the movie. My only complaint about the disk is that the Filmmakers' Commentary track is missing.
I received my copy today from Amazon.co.uk. The order total was 20.31 Pounds, which they first converted to 30.28 Euros (a bit steep), and then my credit card converted it to US Dollars, and charged me $40.80, plus an additional 2% convenience fee of 82 cents.
The case is thicker than American Blu-Ray cases, about the same thickness as a standard definition DVD case.
Overall, I am satisfied.

I didn't say the entire commentary is like that, but he does certainly get stuck in a loop of that for 2 or 3 solid minutes.
I ordered Starship Troopers on the 23rd and got it on the 27th from www.amazon.co.uk

I got my Starship Troopers slightly cheaper, although I do live in the UK (US Blu-ray player). The Rock and Con Air are also Region Free. Also keep in mind Paramount movies are yet to be withdrawn from sale, but they are damm expensive in comparison to others.

For what it's worth, he gets stuck in a similar cycle at the start of his commentary on the Soldier of Orange DVD, repeatedly pointing out which shots were real archival footage and which were staged.
Verhoeven's commentaries are always best when he has a good co-participant to steer the conversation. His absolute worst commentary is Total Recall, IMO.
Verhoeven: "OK, this is the part where you beat up a bunch of guys."
Schwarzenegger: "Exactly."
Verhoeven: "And this is the part where you beat up a bunch more guys."

The price is worth it.
The best looking exclusive BD import I have seen so far. Not perfect like extra distracting grainess during some dark scenes but other than that its sharp, detailed and consistent. The Rock, Airforce One and Crimson Tide does not even come close to its PQ.
I wont have no problem putting this on the Top 10 best PQ on BD (maybe higher). I may need to watch it again this time more critically to effectively rank it (my personal ranking;))
mhafner 10-30-07, 06:55 AM My verdict: Overall pretty good. For a master that was supposed to be grainy (according to the Sony insider) it's quite smooth most of the time. Too smooth. DNR has been applied. It creates some smearing at times, but it's one of the better DNR jobs I have seen. There are also shots with way too much EE.
Quite watchable. ~3.5-4/5.

sharkcohen 01-09-08, 02:36 AM Drop a nuke down a bug hole, you got a lotta dead bugs.
So this means they used VC1 in order to remove the grain? Interesting.
That is not what he said. You are twisting his words. There was nothing said about removing grain, only about needing an advanced codec to properly compress it.
shadowrage 01-09-08, 11:28 AM Starship Troopers BD is awesome. But there are a few VC-1 titles that look a litte too grain free. Is there something about the encode that causes this. Pan's is DNRed but the broadcast is MPEG4 and has grain. Yuma also looks grain free and that's VC-1(extras are AVC and some spots look better than the film).
I prefer Apple codecs to M$ codecs. That aside this is probably my favorite BD. VC-1 or not.
The PCM is wicked. But the gunfire sounds a little weak(probably the way the film was made).
I'm amazed with how well the CGI holds up. The bugs look better than alot of the stuff that's put out today. They are lit properly and the motion is believable. Awesome effects work.
GamerGuyX 01-09-08, 11:34 AM ok
Thanks for the pic. :)
plastikpyro 01-09-08, 11:36 AM I got Starship Troopers from Amazon UK last month but in hind sight I really wanted the Island. I'm in Southern California 92602. shoot me a PM. thanks
Yuma also looks grain free and that's VC-1(extras are AVC and some spots look better than the film).
3:10 to Yuma is by no means grain free. There's quite a lot of grain in that picture, as well as some edge enhancement that makes the grain look really noisy in spots.

I've been surprised to not see reviews of 3:10 or War up yet. Is LG stingy with their screeners?

Beat me to it....there is a fine level of grain throughout the entire run time of Yuma. It's clearly visible on my little 61" DLP set.
Did you get a review copy of 3:10, or did you have to buy it?
I've been surprised to not see reviews of 3:10 or War up yet. Is LG stingy with their screeners?
Lionsgate did not send screeners out until after street date. I've been told (though it is not yet confirmed) that this is their new policy going forward. It's annoying.
Since its quite obvious that the encode has no grain according to mhafner then how do you interpret lgans statement? Keeping in mind that the master is said to have TONS of grain.
If that's what he said, then mhafner is incorrect in this case. There is a fair bit of grain on the Starship Troopers Blu-ray, though it generally isn't too obtrusive.
As far as what was said about the master, as I recall it was paidgeek who said that Sony's master had a lot of grain. The UK disc was released by Disney. Perhaps they just have a different master? In any case, none of Sony's DVD editions were excessively grainy, so I don't why all of a sudden their master would develop tremendous grain problems from out of nowhere.
Then again, as we learned from The Fifth Element, Sony seems to keep multiple masters of certain movies in various levels of quality (the first Blu-ray being in decidedly worse shape than the Superbit DVD). Perhaps in the case of Starship Troopers they have once again lost a perfectly good Superbit DVD master and are left with elements in worse condition? I don't know.
Your obsession with blaming the compression codec for every aspect of picture quality is unfounded. There are many more factors that come into play when mastering a High Definition video disc.
Iceman184 01-11-08, 10:41 AM i have this movie in VHS, Laserdisc, and DVD. i wouldnt mind added the blu-ray. but 40 is steep. ill have to wait till that comes down a bit i think.

How many ways do folks have to state that it plays hunky dory on U.S. players? It works! "There's no crying in baseball", and there's no PAL in Blu-ray. It plays!
I don't even remember what it has for extras if any....? I didn't watch any. I've watched the feature twice already and it looks quite good.
I hope we don't start seeing Wee-jun locked BD's. That seems a possibility if HD-DVD goes away...??? Fox and New Line can't seem to get over the idea of codes..... Maybe they'll all want 'em back? 1, 2, 3 ?

I understand that the disc is not region locked, and I understand that there is no PAL for HD content. My question was about whether the extras were in SD or not - and if they are in SD, PAL is a possibility. You said you have not watched any of the extras, so you aren't qualified to answer the question, nevermind get all excited about it and try to make it look like I haven't read the thread (I have).
TObject 01-11-08, 03:15 PM There is no PAL or NTSC in standard DVDs either, just different combinations of resolutions and refresh rates. Some of these combinations are still referred to as "PAL" or "NTSC" as the names have carried over from the analog color television.

I think the details I gave seem to be saying it's 480 line SD at 29.xx fps so it's certainly not PAL.
It did seem like you didn't read my reply. (or didn't understand what 480 lines at 29.xx fps meant)

I did get the details from playing the extras
DiCecco 01-11-08, 07:28 PM I bought this blu-ray from Australia and I am pleased with it. the picture quality is very good.
jlaavenger 01-24-09, 07:30 AM In the US release there is a scene where Ricco is on the bridge of the ship and he is really gainy. Is this the same on the UK version?
Burrito 02-01-10, 04:09 PM BDinfo scan and screencaps from the german disc which is identical to the UK release:

The following caps look aweful in my Firefox (like downconverted to 256 colors or something)...this has nothing to do with the transfer!
Download the images and view them outside of Firefox to see the real quality!

sharkcohen 02-01-10, 06:39 PM I still prefer the PQ of this release to the US one.
This movie kicks so much ass.
Rachael Bellomy 02-01-10, 07:33 PM I understand that the disc is not region locked, and I understand that there is no PAL for HD content. My question was about whether the extras were in SD or not - and if they are in SD, PAL is a possibility. You said you have not watched any of the extras, so you aren't qualified to answer the question, nevermind get all excited about it and try to make it look like I haven't read the thread (I have).
Sorry, I lost this thread for a while, lo siento and sorry too... ;) There are plenty of SD extras...a few things are 16 x 9. One bit is window-boxed rather small. Varies is aptly applied here. It has all the "original DVD features", U.K. style, plus some trailers.
You can't beat the U.K. disc for playability. It has no Java, so, the Resume feature works on all players. I know the U.S. version has given at least some players problems. The Panny 35 I used to use won't play it without a SD card inserted, allegedly, usually. I don't have a copy. The LPCM audio works well for me.

That still didn't answer his question, but it's ok, because someone else already did.

So that's why my R1 "ST" wont play on my 'new' (04-09) BD-60.
While it will on my 'ancient' LG multi.
Way too go, Blu!
(and then some BD features on some BD's on some BD players wont play WITH an SD card; sucks!)
Looking forward too tracking down an 'import' copy.
Better PQ.
No sync prob.
And LPCM.
Yeah!
