What are you guys using for surge protection? How many Joules is enough? Would this work? http://www.lowes.com/lowes/lkn?action=productDetail&productId=110492-16503-PB003125&lpage=none
Thanks

You'll get lots of heated debate on the whole surge protection/filter issue. But this is what I'm using: http://www.apc.com/resource/include/techspec_index.cfm?base_sku=H15

It coordinates well with the rest of my components, keeps things neat and tidy and quite honestly I hear it kicking on fairly frequently throughout the day/night to level out the power. I'm happy with it.

Ditto. I use APC S-15s and they seem to do their job although I have not had a lightning strike or a damaging surge yet. One other thing about these is that they also protect incoming signal lines.

OTOH, I also use a whole-house surge protector on the main breaker box.

I just bought a APC ES 750 UPS. If lightning strikes hopefully they'll give me the money from their protection plan =)

Thanks. From what I can see the difference between the S series and C series is the battery backup and the voltage regulation. How important is the voltage regulation?

I'd personally rank VR over Battery Backup on the importance list - I'm sure others may feel differently though. The "H" series gives VR w/o the battery backup.

I have the Pure AV 30800 with 5500 joules, and power conditioning, huge picture quality improvement with clean power.

Are you wall mounting your TV? If so, I've been warning people NOT to run the TV power cord or an extension cord in the wall, because it's a fire risk and against code..

If you're going to wall mount and of course should want to surge protect your expensive TV I found a product designed to do that.. check it out, I bought one and installed it and plugged my Pure AV protector into it. www.powerbridgesolution.com

Good luck, be safe..

Kal, which whole-house protector do you use? We recently had our electrical service upgraded from 125 to 200 amps, to run dedicated 20 amp A/V circuits, and I want to install a protector.

Also, do you use the APC S-15 for front-end electronics only, or does it protect your power amps as well? I have two Bryston 4B-SST(C) and one 6B-SST(C) amps for our system, but the owner's manuals recommend direct AC connection rather than through a power conditioner (though, since they've been selling the Torus power conditioners, they recommend them). I'm running our front-end components through a Brickwall PW8R15AUD and then an APC H-15, since the two devices use different technologies (and this path was recommended by Brickwall). I plan to upgrade to an Anthem D-series or similar pre/pro when HDMI 1.3 is implemented. Would you recommend running an S-15 after a Brickwall?

Thanks very much for your expertise in AVS posts and in your wonderful Stereophile articles.

I plug a Bryston 9B-STT into the S-15.

Thanks very much, Kal. I'll check out the EP-2050 and S-15s. Do you think one would handle all three of my Bryston amps (2 4B-SST, 1 6B-SST)?

I truly appreciate your help and expertise.

I don't know what their total demand will be. Nice thing about the S-15 (and newer S-20) is that it tells you what the load is dynamically and what fraction of total capacity it is. So, start with one S-15 and see what it says. Mebbe you need two, mebbe not.

As always, thanks for the sage advice, Kal. An S-20 beckons.
