View Full Version : Software Pricing ???
I just went to order Disturbia through Amazon as I heard good things about the movie itself, but I didn't place the order because I thought the title was over priced at $28.
This got me thinking... Unless I want a title very badly, I don't think I'm willing to pay over $24-$25 (street) anymore for software. It's not that I can't afford it, I'm just willing to pay ridiculous amounts for average software. I'm excited to see many of the upcoming Fox titles, but if their pricing is over $25 (street) for average releases, I'm just not going to bite... especially knowing they'll go on sale eventually.
So what is your spending limit (street pricing) for an average release (not your most desired title)?
$25-30 is my impulse buy range limit. Anything above requires comtemplation on how much I really like the movie.
shiznit 08-06-07, 11:18 AM $24-$25 absolute max. <--- these are PAINFUL to buy though!
** i obviously prefer buying titles for $18 and less. ** (ie; amazon $19.95 - 10%) ;)
stumlad 08-06-07, 11:20 AM I'll pay no more than 20 for a catalog title (where catalog title is considered 3+ yrs old for me). This is why most B&M stores will not get my business right now... they usually sell catalogs for $25.
The movie will no doubt be re-released again and will most likely have a better transfer and a lower price tag when it is re-released. If I rent it now, I probably won't want to watch it again for at least 2 yrs and at that time, I'm sure it can be had for a lot cheaper.
For newer releases where I know I'll get a tier 0 or 1 rating, I'm willing to spend more... unless it's a comedy or drama with hardly any action or sound.
Icemage 08-06-07, 11:49 AM I don't care much about whether a title is catalog or not, but my point of discomfort kicks in at $30. It has to be something I really want for me to go to that price or higher (i.e. major blockbuster day and date). For catalog, unless it's legendary catalog status like Lawrence of Arabia, Jurassic Park, or Star Wars, $20 is the practical limit.
Mongoos150 08-06-07, 11:59 AM $28-30 max. I'm surprised there are so many people unwilling to pay around $30 for a great film they'll watch for years... the price of HDM never seemed expensive at all to me... And I'm a poor college student!

I'm a college student who's poor because of HDM.
19.99 for catalogs, 24.99 for new releases.
I cringe at anything in excess. Sometimes I give in. Hott Fuzz and Shooter for example.

The question was regarding AVERAGE films, NOT great films.
No Clue 08-06-07, 05:33 PM There are very few titles that I would pay over $20 for.
I have gone into a BB or CC several times to get a HD title but the thought of paying $30 -$35 each sends me out the door empty handed. Thank goodness for netflix.
I used to have no problem picking up 3 or 4 dvd's at a time at $15 each. Despite the better quality, I just can't get past the extra cost.
Jiffylush 08-06-07, 05:35 PM I like the < $24 that I generally get on Amazon, but I will pay more for better movies.
rolltide1017 08-06-07, 06:40 PM For me to make a blind buy, it must be $19.99 or less. I'm willing to pay a little more for movies I've seen are really want (like CEOT3K and Transformers). If the studios want me to start wandering store aisles and just make random impulse buys like I did with DVD, $20 or less will do it.
thedeskE 08-06-07, 06:51 PM The first day I set up my BD player there was a trip to BB to grab some content. I didn't bother to check price - it was a mission to have fun on my first 2 evenings with BD. At the register with 4 titles, my tab was just under 160! I remember a pause just before handing over my visa card and little man on one of my shoulders talking to me on the way to the car. `Hey A&^**le! You just got boned!'
Guess I needed that moment to remind me what it's like to buy
this stuff local and so early in the format history. I never owned Laser Disk, but I hear it was like making a car payment when you purchased a few at once.
I will pay up to 30 for an impulse buy.
shinksma 08-06-07, 06:55 PM For "average" HD titles (as your poll is worded), I wouldn't want to pay more than $18 (i.e. $20 - 10% Amazon discount).
For above-average titles (Curse of the Golden Flower, 300, Children of Men, etc - all IMHO of course) I will pay up to about $25. It will be a rarity for me to pay more than that.

Teepanen 08-06-07, 07:56 PM 23.99 is my ceiling for new releases and movies I really want. Otherwise 19.99 is what I will pay. I want Shooter, but won't shell out $27 for it.
$20 is my ceiling, new or old.
cnickersonjr 08-06-07, 08:38 PM For average titles $22 is my cap. 300 wasn't an average title, so I had no problem paying the $27. Now $27 for 16 Blocks or The Break Up, not going to happen. I'll just buy them used.

Oh I payed $27 for this one. Great PQ, great film.(IMO) The featurettes are in HD, which I can appreciate. I think SD features are an insult, this is HD-DVD for crying out loud.
