Hello, new TV time :)

Anyway my uses are as follows:
- Both SD and HD broadcasts (cablebox: SA8300HD)
- Xbox360
- Wii
- and also deciding between one of the hi def movie formats. That being said, if i go blu-ray, then most likely I'll be picking up a ps3 which will add to my gaming setup.

I'm sitting about 6-6.5 feet away from the screen, in a not-too-bright basement den. too much ambient light is not a problem.

Sharp LC37D62U
Panasonic TH42PX75

I'd like the best overall performance, in terms of HD broadcasts/movies, gaming and to a lesser extent SD. (I still watch alot of SD programming). I'm transitioning from my old but trusty Panasonic CT34WX15 DirectView HDTV that handled SD well, so I don't want to take too big a step back when going to an lcd panel.

What do you guys think?

From what I gather, both have their pros and cons

I actually have the Sharp right now, and i love it but I have 30 days to return it if i dont want it, and I'm getting that nagging feeling in my mind that I should have gotten the Panny.

Thanks

Although I don't have any direct knowledge of the Sharp, I do have that Panny and love it. The PQ is excellent HD and it produces commendable SD picture as well. The factor that put the Panny ahead in my mind was the Concierge program. This involves that if service cannot be done at your residence, they will replace your plasma with a loaner plasma while you wait for the repair. Just food for thought.

Thanks for the reply. Yeah, the Concierge program was a big factor in my thinking as well. However I think the thing that puts it over the top for me with the Sharp was its capabilities as an extension of my PC which i would probably use quite a bit.

As of now, I think I may keep the Sharp

I have the Panasonic plama also. Xbox 360 & ps3 look great on these sets, no motion blur. HD & Blue Ray look awesome, these sets have great shadow detail and nice blacks. But if your going to use your tv as a pc monitor you'll probably want to stick with the lcd.

LCDs tend to have very bright pictures, however, have poor blacks. Also motion blur is getting much better as the technology ages. However, plasma still has the edge in terms of that HT picture look and color accuracy is much better. So my vote goes for the 42PX75U.

I am unsure of the Sharp D62s and 92s but the 52 and 46 inchers can have a deeper shade of black than even a Panasonic plasma so if the 46 and 52 are any indication... then black level isn't a concern if you're content with your current LCD.

I agree that motion is better on plasmas, but LCDs are getting pretty good. If you don't see motion blur, then I think you're safe. If you're content? Keep it. This is the basic LCD vs. Plasma question.

I'm definitely content with what I'm seeing with the Sharp.

The two things that are on my mind are:
- I may be seeing some SLIGHT motion blur when playing sports games on my 360. This is apparent in NBA2k7 when I'm passing the ball from one end of the court to a player at the other end (ie. after a rebound/outlet pass). It's not so much a blur, but its like my eyes take a split second to adjust to where the ball goes. Heck it may just be my eyes, not the tv?

- 42 is bigger than 37. At first I thought i would be sitting around 6 feet from the screen. But I stupidly was using the viewing distance that i had for my beast of a CRT HDTV which, with its larger depth, made the screen closer than it is with the LCD where the screen is further back because of its flatness. Now i'm more like 7-7.5 feet from the screen

Otherwise, the tv has been workin out great, and with my PC right beside it, i can foresee some cool things I can do with it as a 1080p monitor.

Thanks again

EDIT: black levels have looked fine to me, so no problem there.

Also may be good to add is that for the price i got the sharp for, i was able to add an extended warranty and still paid about as much as the panasonic without any additional warranty.

Will 1080p be any better than 720p on a 37" screen from 7-8 feet away?

Would the 42" plasma be too big for that viewing distance?

Also how big of an issue is image retention on the Panny? I play alot of sports games where there is a static score bar at the bottom of the screen.

Thanks
