this of course comes out the day my hd1000u shipped.

I had gone back and forth between the Mits and the AX100, mainly because I wanted to be able to watch with mild to moderate ambient light for football games. I have a pool table in the back of the room (it's 15x30) with recessed lighting above it that is controlled separately from the lights above the screen and seating area that will likely be on during games.

I ended up going with the Mits based on it's glowing user experience here and it's shadow detail/DLP pic quality (I've had both in the past and DLP was better to my eye) and its ok lumen output. I won't only be watching football, after all.

Any hd1000u owners out there who are using theirs in a setup similar to mine? Does it perform ok in these conditions or would the extra lumens of the 1500 really be needed?

Projectorcentral.com, in contrast, claimed the difference in brightness between the HC1500 and HD1000U was so slight that it was only noticeable in a side-by-side comparison and made it seem like the cosmetic difference in the gray color of the exterior of the two Mitsubishis' cases was as big of a diffference as anything else between the new model and its predecessor.

Projectorreview.com said the HC1500 was comparable to the Epson 400 and Panasonic AX100U, even brighter than the latter in best Cinema mode. Very interesting. I may still opt for the Benq W500 but I think I'm going to wait until reviews come out for it before making my final decision.

yeah, I wasn't really worrying about the 1500 based on projector central's comments. A little bump in brightness isn't a big deal and probably wouldn't be noticeable. I was able to get the 1000 from a dealer I've had good experience with in the past that didn't have the 1500, so I went ahead and ordered.

I run my HD1000 in low light lamp mode all the time. Even during the day with a bay window and some light curtains slightly pulled. It is plenty bright. So bright in fact that at night, the bright scenes really hurt my eyes....lol. Also at night it looks like I have a "92 inch plasma. No kidding.

does this mean the hc1500 is much better than the hd1000? or will it just be a slight difference?

projectorcentral:

We did measure our HC1500 test unit as being slightly brighter, but the difference was detectable only by a light meter and not visible to the human eye in a side by side test.

But the documented tested facts are that it is ~600 lumens brighter. That has to be noticeable....

Forget the review from ProjectorCentral about brightness--they didn't specify how they measured the brightness. Also, it was a very brief review--I would call it a summary and they really didn't run the full gamut of tests on the HC1500, instead referring people to their HD1000U review. ProjectorReviews measures several modes, and tells you how it compares to other projectors measured the same way. Read both reviews and decide for yourself as to who actually reviewed the HC1500 more thoroughly.
