Need to buy a budget projector for new HT. Need input as to the best bang for the $. Have been looking at Optima HD-70, Sanyo PLV-Z5 and BenQ W500. These fit into my budget but I need to be real sure before purchasing. Obviously I haven't made the DLP vs. LCD decision either, does it matter much? Looking for expert and novice input for all of the above.

My choice would be the benq for lens shift and the Reon processor for upscaling and deinterlacing DVDs. It is about $250-300 more than the Optoma though. The Mitsubishi HD1000/HC1500 are gooc choices if you need a really bright projector in ambient light situations.

Well I own the HD70 (FIRST PROJECTOR) and you need basically a dark-ass room.. It's not bright even on torch mode with just a little ambient light.. But if your room is dark it has a beautiful picture.. Also a plus for the projector is the bulb price, one of if not the lowest replacement price out of the ones you listed.. So you can use torch mode from day one..
Try the Mitsu. HD-1000 or the Sharp DT-500...I've owned both and they are bright enough for most light controlled rooms.

The area I'm building is capable of being completely blacked out, even during daylight hours.

The Mits HD1000 or the HD70 (w/cheaper bulb replacement)
