I keep coming back to this recording in my SACD collection...so I must really be impressed with it. There are sample tracks on TELARC if you are not familiar with the music. Give your system a great workout with this incredible SACD recording. Clear, confident, boastful, gentle vocals so crisp and clear as to make you feel you are standing right there. This multi channel recording creates a delightfully full and rich soundstage complete with orchestra, soloists, and chorus. What more can you ask of your home audio system?

Hey there Kal,

I read your article about the continuing demise of the SACD format. And you are so right! It isn't the format that must survive...it's the recording. For now...SACD is the format. Who knows what format might be invented a few years from now. But, it doesn't matter. Just pull those tapes from the vault and we're back in business.

Meanwhile, I am loving my SACD sound.

I wish I had bought the SACD, because sadly, I am not impressed with my DVD-A version of this album. I originally bought this on CD (Philips classics DDD) and loved it, but I feel that this is far from what HR MC has to offer...

MarkI may have missed it but I have not heard a HR +/-MC Carmina Burana worth keeping.

I must say that I am totally unimpressed with sound quality (fidelity) of this Telarc recording.
Truth is I haven’t heard better Carmina Burana, but there is a lot of way better (sound quality wise) recordings out there.

Any you might recommend?

Here's my setup. Polk LSi9 (L, R), LSiC (C), LSiFx (SL, SR), two Polk PSW 505 Subs, Outlaw Pre and Amp (300W in to 4 Ohms, Denon 2910 to play SACD.

Maybe I drink too much wine while listening...but...it really sounds fantastic in my livingroom. Sorry you didn't have as much success.

I prefer the Thielemann DVD-A from Deutsche Grammophon. This one is to me the current gold-standard for the Carmina Burana.

How many versions are there? The one I have is by Teldec featuring the The London Philharmonic Chior...

To me it sounds only marginally better than playing the Phillips DDD PCM CD through DPLII [without the steering artefacts]...

Just ordered Deutsche Grammophon DVD-a. I’ll see if I feel more love from it.

I thought that's an remaster of 1990 stereo recording...

I thought that's an remaster of 1990 stereo recording...No. You are thinking of the earlier Shaw recording on Telarc. This is a new one.

My DVD-a arrived last week so I have a chance for a brief comparison. There is no doubt in my mind that Deutsche Gramophone version is (far) superior to Telarc one.
Didn’t have time to really go in depth, but here are a few things that I noticed: Deutsche Gramophone one seems to be more balanced – I always have a feeling that winds (especially brass) are overpowering on Telarc. There is definitely more detail in HF on DVD-a.
The most noticeable difference for me was in chorus – on Deutsche Gramophone when you listen to the chorus, you hear it as the sum of individual voices – on Telarc chorus sounds like an undistinguishable mass.

Might want to get the Ormandy/Philadelphia SACD only remastered recording. Originally released on LP in 1960, it's a superb reading. It's amazing to hear how really good those analog masters were/are. An amazing restoration.

Sorry to be a pain, but the only version I have here is the Zubin Mehta one on DVD-A from Teldec. Is this the same one talked about here?
If not - where do I go look?
My copy is 24/88.2 in stereo & 5.1 (an odd choice) and is by the London Philharmonic with the London Philharmonic Choir & the Southend Boys Choir.

There is definitely more detail in HF on DVD-a.

True, and if you look at the Spectrum Plots of any SACD that has been recorded to HD then you will plainly see why - all that exists above 23KHz on SACD/DSD is noise, and lots of it.

Neil, this is the DVD-A people are referring to here:

I have the Telarc recording, but I did bite and order the Thielemann DVD-A. Haven't had a chance to listen to it yet though.
