I need to be able to hook up a dvd player to play some promo videos to an LCD Monitor, a very simple setup, or so I thought.

I have a sony dvd player with HDMI out, connected to a Viewsonic 2030M LCD with a hdmi to dvi cable. Audio is connected from RCA to a mini stereo connector.

I have audio, but no video. Is the issue with the dvd player or the monitor or both? Again, this is going to be setup to play a dvd in a store to promote products via video.

Suggestions, please. The monitor also has VGA in. I'd like to keep this monitor if possible, but have no problem picking up a different DVD player.

Check the monitor to see if you can change the setting on this input from a computer input to DVI. I am not familiar with this monitor but my LG has a setting in the menu to change the PC input to DVI.

If the LCD monitor doesn't accept/recognize 480p, 720p (I doubt 480i, 1080i) then you won't see video. Can the Sony output 800x600 or 1024x768 or some other PC resolution?

There's also a good chance that the monitor (which since it's a Viewsonic is most likely a computer monitor and not an HDTV) does not include HDCP, so an HDMI source (which must include HDCP to meet the HDMI spec) would not be able to negotiate a handshake and thus would not output video.

Yes, this monitor is a computer monitor, not an HDTV.

Looks like my only option is to go with a dvd player with a vga port?

Any suggestions on brands.

Normally, video equipment sends YUV data over HDMI while computer equipment sends RGB data over DVI. Even if you get an HDMI-to-DVI cable, its' not going to convert the data format.

I haven't tried it, but my Pioneer DV-400 has a menu option for sending "RGB" data over HDMI. The only reason I can think of for that option is for computer displays. Perhaps your DVD player has a similar option?

The HDMI standard includes DVI operability and that includes RGB signals and all displays ought to be able to acccept it. It is handy to be able to send RGB instead of YCbCr because some displays are confused about which color standard (601 or 709) to use with the later.
