I've been wading through pages and pages of threads and reviews and prices and I've narrowed my new TV choices to 3.

Samsung HL-S5679W
Samsung HL-S5687W
JVC HD56FH97

For the life of me I cannot make a decision, each has a completely different drawback and almost exactly the same price.

5679 - From what I've gathered, the 5679 has so-so black levels, needs heavy calibration and has some pincushioning issues. It does 1080p over HDMI,VGA, and component (I believe).

5687 - Better black levels, banding issues, missing features (no cablecard, no pip). 1080p over HDMI,VGA, not sure about component

56FH96 - No independent input settings, only 1080p over HDMI, only 1024 x 768 on VGA. Good black levels, PQ, not a huge amount of calibration to be done. The VGA limitation might be the back breaker because I use my 360 for everything (games, dvd, hd-dvd) and would rather not have to get an elite.

I'm sure there is a plethora of more information, but for anyone who feels like taking a stab at what TV I should get, I would really appreciate the advice.

I guess I should say I'm leaning towards the 5687 right now.

One thing I disliked about the samsungs was any pressure (and I mean any) deformed the casing which had a dramatic effect on geometry.

The 87W is the LED one right? If so, that was one of my choices, but it is expensive and really unproven.

I wound up going with a Sony SXRD set which is similar to the JVC in technology but it does have input-independent settings.

The PC input really isn't a biggie as you can always use DVI or HDMI and get a better picture than VGA anyway. I do wish they wouldn't waste the VGA input with only marginal capability, though.

Since you do have a 360 I guess the VGA is important then. I'd go for the LED Samsung.

The 79W is the LED.

Well unless something changed there is no 1080P via component only 1080I max.

Of you choices the 5687W seems a better fit. But then again I love my black levels and dont care about pip or cablecard. I have them now and never use them.

Thanks for the advice guys, I found out the 5687 doesn't have a QAM tuner and I really would like either a QAM or CC, and it doesn't have either. Looks like I'm going with the 5679. Now if only a certain large online retailer would drop their price again....

It has QAM capabilities but they are disabled. There is quite a discussion about it in several threads

Difference between 87W and 88W models (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?p=7915022&&#post7915022)

There's another thread explaining that it just appears that it is software disabled because all the hardware is there. I can't find it now though. It was something along that line.
