hey guys...i just completed my HT room in what used to be a 3 car garage...and yes i did take the doors down and frame in where they used to be! anyways, after months of work when it was all done it was just way to hot inside...getting an AC unit was out of the question because i dont have enough amps going to the room to run everything along with an AC unit...and to get enough amps to run one would have cost me around $8,000...dont ask, just trust me!
so after looking around at everything i could possibly do to cool it down i fianlly settled on trying a solar powered attic fan...i installed it the other day...it only took about an hour...it took the temperature from about 82 degrees to 70 degrees inside the room during the middle of the day...i live in San Diego so it gets pretty hot...it only cost me $200 and you can get them at Lowes or Home Depot.
just thought this might help some people out who have been looking for a way to cool their HT room but cant for whatever reason get an AC unit. :D

Be glad you're not in Houston though. Here in Texas it gets just a bit warmer than 82 in my garage during July and August, around 110 to 115.
Nice thinking with the fan though. Do you have a heating solution figured out for the winter months?

You should look into a mini-split A/C. There are models that will plug into 15 amp 120 volt plugs and give you about 12,000 BTU of cooling.

i was looking into those also...it takes way to many amps to run one of those for my situation.
and as for the winter months it really never gets very cold in the room...it only has a problem with heat.

Does the fan vent directly out of the room, or out of the attic/crawl space above the room?
Is there any noise?

it just vents the attic air...that is what traps in a ton of hot air thus leading to a sweltering room below...and as for the noise part i actually didnt even think it was working but then i got on the ladder and got about 3 feet from it and i could feel it moving air out...it is absolutely silent which i couldnt believe...i thought it was gonna sound like a tornado!

that's a great solution. I put one in my attic and when I leave the pull down stairs open, it really helps keep the house a lot cooler, although mine is hardwired with a themorstat. You just made me think I'll put one in my new (to me) garage, with no insulation yet, it gets toasty out there! :)
