View Full Version : Has Universal lost all common sense? Why no Flash Gordan on HD-DVD today?

I was just wandering my local wal-Mart when lord and behold my eye caught the amazing cover of the new Flash gordan special edition, now I have to ask after re-watching this awesome film, why no HD-DVD version? This would of been amazing in HD-DVD, but as per usual, Universal drops the ball.

"Coomon" sense? What kind of sense is that?
Just kidding.
I think Universal has a lot up their sleeves for Q4. ;)

With the new Flash Gordon series starting on SCI-FI this Friday it would be nice to have it on HD instead of waitin 'til some unmentioned 4Q.

I don't know, if they were going to release it, you'd think they'd of done it along with the SD version. What are they going to do now, re-re-release as "Flash Gordon: He's a Miracle Edition"? ;)

Probably because it would only sell about 200 copies on HD-DVD. Unfortunately, we are not the market.

It's on HDNet this month, perhaps that will tide you over? I'm disappointed, too, but very excited about the HDNet showing.

I'm also VERY excited about the HDNet showing. It was on Cinemax HD years ago... we caught the tail end and it was the first thing I saw in HD after our HD DVR installation. Haven't seen it since.

If this movie isn't the ultimate guilty pleasure, I don't know what is. He'll save every one of us!

God, I could have sworn that I saw a Hi-Def version coming on 1 of the platforms on a web-site last weekend. I'll have to check again...maybe it was on thelookandsoundofperfect.com. I might be thinking of The Last Starfighter though...I just remember thinking wow...that's a blast of childhood memories.

That honestly doesn't make much sense. We're not the market for Flash Gordon on HD-DVD? But we are the market for... The Last Starfighter on HD-DVD? You think Flash Gordon would've sold less copies than Meet Joe Black? I think Universal's expectations are pretty much in check at this point.

It's odd that Universal creates a new transfer for a catalog title and then hold THAT back from an HD release. So far, hasn't the only new catalog remaster that got a day and date HD release (or an HD release at all) been Backdraft? I remember they blew right on by Fletch as well.

And both Fletch and Flash Gordon I ended up not holding out on just because the box art was so cool. So, you win Universal. You win.

They probably want more player penetration before letting the HD goods go.

I have moved all my current lot of HD DVDs onto my wish list because I need to save cash for my trip to Europe next week. This includes Hot Fuzz, The Host, and (gasp) 300.

However, if Flash had come out on HD DVD this week I would have bought it immediately. :)

Flash Gordon is one of the most iconic characters in Science Fiction and is one of the most famous comic serials of all time since its first release in freaking 1934, seriously here, who has never heard of Flash gordon before?

If by dreadful you mean "wonderful!", I fully agree.

Seriously, it's not a great movie. But it's just so damn campy... the costumes, the effects, the acting, and the soundtrack (oh god the SOUNDTRACK!) all add up to quite a package. Oh, and Ming's daughter is smokin'.

I think a better question is why haven't we seen a Conan double HD DVD pack yet?

SciFi Channel is coming out with a new Flash Gordon Series (http://youtube.com/watch?v=ef9kaIUyD0s) this month.

SciFi is owned by NBC/Universal, I think it's safe to say we'll see it on HD DVD soon enough.

Your post just made me realise how amazing a TrueHD soundtrack would be on Flash Gordon... FLAAASH! AHHHAHHHHHHH!!!I'm not so sure. I watched about half of it last night and while the soundtrack is perfectly serviceable, it has that thin late 70's/early 80's sound to it. I don't think it would benefit much from the lossless treatment.

We're getting Legend soon, if they threw in Conan and Flash my trifecta be completed.

Yeah that Queen soundtrack in Losless would definitely make it worth picking up the disc. I can just feel Brian May's guitar rocking my room. I guess I'll have to settle on plain old Dolby Digital.

Man this movie is such a guilty pleasure of mine! My wife just shakes her head everytime I mention it. :p

Ornella Muti is one of the few bright spots for this dreck. Of course, she's much better in Italian films.

Just watched the last 20 minutes on HD Network.

I forgot how much I loved this movie, and how may times I've watched it throughout the '80's. The soundtrack is amazing, the colors are fantastic, the acting and effects are pure cheese but so fun to watch. This would be an extraordinary HD disc.

Too bad the version on HD Network was GARBAGE. Definitely the SD version. It appears they haven't mastered this classic.

I think the time is ripe to re-introduce Flash Gordon and Queen.

Come on Universal!

Why no Flash Gordan (sic) on HD-DVD (sic) today?
If you your such a BIG "Gordon" fan, how come you typed in "Gordan" for the title of this thread??? :p
"FG" is #151 on Amazon right now for an SD DVD at SD DVD prices.
Do you believe the HD DVD could/would outsell that?
On the other hand, Serenity [HD DVD] is still up there at #171; after its been released, like, forever??? ;)

The Sci Fi chanel Flash Gordon is so bad i couldn't even make it 1/3 way through the 1st episode. They changed the story so much to keep the costs cheap that any resemblence to the movie or the old movie serials simply doesn't exist.I can't see it lasting longer than a year. They should have just kept Stargate going for another year.

I am in total agreement. This Sci-Fi Flash SUCKS!! The Ming is a big weenie.Give me Charles Middleton anyday. In fact, I'd rather have the original serial in HD instead of the lousy 1980 catastrophe.:)

Y'know, I saw some clips of Christopher Walken from something called BALLS OF FURY. He's dressed and appears more like Ming than the guy on the Sci-Fi series (which I gave up on).

What a concept! "Let's have a FLASH GORDON series where he rarely leaves earth and lives with his Mom!!!"
