I thought I'd read that one of the HD channels was going to carry the shuttle launch this morning but I can't find it on any schedules. Anyone know anything about this?

HDNET ususally carries shuttle launches in HD. It's not in the guide, so just check the channel an hour or so before launch.

The NASA site shows the launch is Aug 8th, 6:36pm EDT

are we going to see these launches on broadcast television in HD in the next few years? I know only NBC has their nightly news in HD but is there any sharing of footage?

I don't have a HDTV, I have a tuner for my computer that picks up OTA (and QAM if I had cable) so I was wondering if a shuttle launch will be in HD on the nightly news or something eventually.

I doubt it. HDNet has the exclusive contract with NASA for the H/D feed. The shuttle program ends in the year 2010. NASA's pool coverage is Digital but not
H/D., and the building is several miles from the pad. H/DNet has a special H/D
camera that is protected by a special enclosure, and is only a few hundred feet
from the pad. The picture is awesome from them...not so special from the NASA
channel feed. In addition they provide a lot of "extra" pre-launch coverage etc.

This is just a reminder to let everyone know about the shuttle launch tonight at 6:36pm EDT in HD on HDNET.

With this launch I think HDNET has finally gotten the right balance between NASA's excellent coverage and original HDNET content.

You should read prior discussions on this issue to understand why what you're seeing is a good thing.

I noticed the sound was fairly impressive starting at about 10 seconds into the launch.

I wish there was a way to make it sound as if you were there (but without the delay of being miles away.)

....We watched the launch on HDNet StarChoice 275....when the the big launch sound kicked in the walls were shaking!!!....

....My Pioneer receiver briefly shut down!
