...on my Pioneer 940 Elite rather than leaving it at 480i (or even 480p)?
I've tried all the settings on the Oppo and to my eyes - for whatever reason - outputing 720p over HDMI to my Pio 940 looks best. I've tried LOTR Fellowship of the Ring, Two Towers and Star Wars III - and they all look best at 720p.
I was under the impression that with a 940 Elite that it would typically handle the scaling best and leaving the HDMI output on the Oppo at 480i would yield the best results. In fact I even got an email from Oppo that essentially said that.
For your display there are two possibilities.
1. DV-970HD. Some user have had very good results using 480i from the DV-970HD through HDMI and feeding it into the display. The display will then do all the de-interlacing and scaling. We have not personally tested our DVD players on this display, but we do know that is passes
3:2 Cadence, which many displays do not.
2. DV-981HD. Other users have been very happy with the performance of the OPDV971H, and the successor (DV-981HD) is primed to take the performance crown. The DV-9781HD has superior de-interlacing and scaling capabilities compared to the DV-970HD, so a 720p signal through HDMI could produce very good visual response on your Pioneer PDP. We have not heard of any macroblock enhancement errors on this display.
It just doesn't make sense to me that upconverting a 480i signal to 720p - then sending it to the Pio to upconvert it again to 768 would look best. It makes no sense to me at all.
Could anyone offer their thoughts?
