p. 90 in the manual.
Jerry98vert 10-18-07, 02:39 AM Oops my bad sorry I did see that, thanks for the quick response.
Uptown193 10-18-07, 03:08 AM From a past post:
1) Turn on receiver (if not already)
2) Press and hold "Display" button and then immediately press "Standby" button
3) Release both buttons (MAIN page of firmware info will be displayed) and then quickly press "Tone" button (if you wait too long, the display will revert back to what it was before the "Display" and "Standby" buttons were pressed). Temperature info will stay on until a function change is initiated.
Thanks. my degrees are fluxuating at 122 and 123. Hot stuff.
Hans_Gruber 10-18-07, 03:32 AM I have a problem concering the video conversion from component to hdmi. I have a Topfield digital setup box connected with a component and optical cables to the 705, and the 705 then converts the signal into hdmi, which is connected to my HD70.
The problem is that every time I change channel, the program info in the bottom of the picture gets messed up, and after a while, the screen is divided vertically from the middle! Also, the projector loses the signal continuously. Watching TV is impossible... sound is ok, though.
The hdmi cable is good, no problems even with 1080p signal (currently 720p).
Should the box's video output be set at YUV or RGB signal? YUV was worked so far.
Is there a menu where I could tweak/change the scaler's settings?
mrgribbles 10-18-07, 06:44 AM people with this receiver how did it do with transformers
The best audio/video experience I have ever seen at home. The 705 did its job. Handled dialog clearly, score and special effects flawlessly. Better than any other AVR, who's to say. Outstanding movie. 2+ hours that went by in what seemed like 15 minutes.
mrgribbles 10-18-07, 06:45 AM Where else can you buy extended warrantier other than the seller? Are they really worth it since the 705 has a two year warranty?
I htink you can buy an extended warranty from Onkyo. Search the website.
vernavideo 10-18-07, 07:11 AM Greetings to all!
I have recently become a proud owner of this nice receiver and this is my first post in this forum. I have only read this enormous thread until page 70, and I made the purchase last week, when I was only at page 20 or something, to replace a 6 years old pioneer vsx 2010 which will be now used as a multiroom amplifier.
First of all, I would like to thank all of you who have spent so much time explaining noobies things even when a quick trip to the owner manual would have solved most people problems. Some of the tweaking posts however are memorable for how informative, yet concise they are. I only wished they could be easier referenced.
My current set-up is:
Receiver: Onkyo TX-SR 705 (silver - eu model)
F Spk: Mission 780s
C Spk: Mission 780c
S Spk: Mission 78 DS
SW: Yamaha YSTSW325
Source: XBOX 360 Premium used as DVD player/media canter extender
CD Player: NAD 540c
Front Spk amp: Rotel (I do not recall by heart the model of this fine 2 channels 65w amplifier which has served me well for almost 20 years- shame on me)
Display: Sanyo z4 Projector
I am also waiting for a pioneer DV 600 to take the HDMI plunge (hopefully without the lip-sync issues). It should arrive this Friday, hopefully. The DV 600 will also replace my Philips 963 SA as a sacd player. Sadly, it has died after only 5 years of intensive use. hope the pioneer will last a bit longer and will have the same (if not better) quality then the Philips.
Also, I am looking for a used Rotel RB976 deal to replace my 2 channel amplifier and a new subfoofer, as the yamaha does not seem to follow the music as precisely as the rest of the components are. hope one day I will be able to put my hands on a REL sub.
As for the receiver, I must admit I like it a lot. The only issues I have with it are:
- the bad quality of the component switch: the difference in pq when I connect the xbox straight to the pj as opposed to when I put the receiver in between is so evident that even my wife can notice it
- Audissey Eq: Turn it off!!!! It's probably me, but I cannot seem to get anything good out of it. Apart from the levels which do not match with my ears or a professional spl meter, the eq setting do not any justice to an otherwise open sounding amplifier (may be just a tad too much on the bright side - but then again, for movies, it's a definitely plus). Much, much better to start with the crossover setting as wonderfully explained in the memorable post by (gosh!, I do not recall the author, was it woots?) with all eq levels set to flat and fine tune it from there.
- S-video to component upconversion. The projector scaler/deinterlacer seem to do a much better job there when I occasionally have to connect my camcorder to the pj. Even S-video -> S-video degrades the quality to a level I am forced to link the 2 components directly. I will check if s-video to HDMI works any better.
If I am allowed to make a suggestion to the most audiophiles amongst you, take the plunge and add a stereo/3 channels amplifier to your current set-up. You can get extremely good results when buying a used amplifier in the 2nd hand market. very good amplifiers can be found in the $100/$200 range, and, like good wine, time can only improve them, so do not get scared when you see an ad for a +10 years amplifier. If possible however, you should try it with you set up before committing to buy it. Even if it sounds very well with someone else set-up, it does not mean it will serve as well with the rest of the components you have. Personally, I think the combination NAD/Rotel/Mission is a magic one, with all the components striving to give the best performance, but after few minutes they seem to disappear, and you suddenly find yourself in the middle of the soundstage. Fantastic!
I also have a (slightly) OT request:
Would any of you know a good (and possibly freeware/shareware) program to be used as a spl meter and to fine tune the onkyo eq settings.
The local little shop I get served from is kind enough to lend me their professional spl meter, but I constantly change furniture/speaker position in order to get the best room acoustic, and sooner rather then later the shop will tell me off, regardless of the ridiculous amount of money I have spend there in hardware and software in those years.
Basically I would like to connect the onkyo mic to the mic-in of the PC, the 5.1 output of the PC to the analog in of the onkyo and, with the help of some software, fine tune the onkyo so that I can get a true THX eq curve for when I am watching movies and a complete flat curve for music.
Sorry for being so long and winding and thank you in advance for any suggestion on the eq setting.
Stefano
Does the 705 have the thx 2 certification like the 805? Im curious what is the benefit of paying for 805 over the 705 if both are level 6 future proof.
I've studied the user manuals for both the 705 and the 805 and here are the advantages of the 805 over the 705 that I have noticed:
The 805 is THX Ultra2 certified while the 705 is THX Select2 certified.
More power, 130 watts instead of 100 watts.
One more input selector, AUX 2.
A third zone output.
The ability to manually select either the analog or digital signal connected to the same input.
Speaker/channel indicator display on the front panel.
Ability to enter FM frequencies directly using the number buttons on the remote.
The multichannel input is a totally separate input on the 805 while it's tied to the DVD input on the 705.
mrgribbles 10-18-07, 08:24 AM Welcome to the forum Stefano, great first post. Audyssey isn't everyones' cup o' tea but I swear by it. When you manually adjust via SPL meter do you also manually set up EQ?
Start at this link for some ideas on PC based spectrum analyzers: http://www.hitsquad.com/smm/win95/SPECTRUM_ANALYZERS/
mrgribbles 10-18-07, 08:36 AM Powering off a connected device and running it up to max produces no hum or noise whatsoever. I tried a couple more open connections and the results are the same as my first tries, hum starts in the early + numbers. and increases to +17. Still, no noise from the powered sub woofer.
All my connections are HDMI. My normal listening level is -20dB +/- a few. Rarely do I get into the low teens.
Same with me mrgribbles. I use axiom speakers which are pretty efficient, around 90db i think. Speaker efficiency can make a very big difference in how loud -20 sounds.
Uptown193 10-18-07, 10:11 AM The best audio/video experience I have ever seen at home. The 705 did its job. Handled dialog clearly, score and special effects flawlessly. Better than any other AVR, who's to say. Outstanding movie. 2+ hours that went by in what seemed like 15 minutes.
It was excellent and with this receiver made it even better, especially with the 7.1 surround sound, cant wait to watch it again tonight and again this weekend.
vernavideo 10-18-07, 10:55 AM Hi mrgribbles and thakns for the quick reply.
When you manually adjust via SPL meter do you also manually set up EQ?
Are you suggesting that there is some secret menu in the Onkyo which send test tones at different frequencies?
At the minute I have set the EQ to off. I have the feeling that without some sofware like those included in the link, I will not be able to achieve real improvements, and in fact, even when I have the impression I have improved things a bit via the manual eq setting and using my ears only, once I turn it off, I have the distict feeling that it sounds better with no equalization at all.
Could it depend on the quality of the equalizer?
Cheers,
Stefano
tranzparentl 10-18-07, 11:06 AM So I finally got the 705 from Circuit City the other day with AAA 10% coupon.
I'm lovin it but now I have many other things to upgrade and I could use all the help I could get about my speakers. I posted a poll over in the Speaker forum about which I should upgrade first. Feel free to help me out!
http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=924437
I also need to get the HD-A35 soon to replace my Xbox Add-on.
mrgribbles 10-18-07, 11:17 AM Hi again Stefano. No, there are no hidden frequency ramps in the 705 that would facilitate an EQ type setup.
If you do want to get into manual EQ, here's a link to a free CD that has a number of frequency test tones that may help: http://virtuelvis.com/archives/2004/09/audio-test-cd

Could it depend on the quality of the equalizer? Then, you should leave the EQ to off. That is the great thing about being to disable/enable it instantly. You can A/B compare. And, if OFF sounds better than ON, leave it OFF.
Of course, the quality of an equalizer will affect its abilities. In this case, the 705's EQ is what it is. (I'm not that hrilled with it either.) But, it is all you have to work with. If you cannot make the unit sound better using the manual EQ or Audessey, then leave the EQ OFF.

turbe, I decided to take my own advice and put a DVD into the xbox350 elite, then paused it and cranked up the volume. PERFECT SILENCE! I ejected the DVD and the noise returned when the Xbox Console menu appeared. (To me, that's weird.:()
But it does seem this isn't a big issue with HDMI sources.
Hey Trans.. did you ever go in and setup your listening modes for each of your inputs? Try taking the time (if you didnt already) to select something other then "last use" or pure audio for all the input types on the list.. I do PLIIx Movie for all of mine and True HD and DTS HD for those special codecs. Remember to do this for each input source on the receiver... dvd, game, cable, etc... each stores separate listening mode data.
I used to get LOTS of pops and clicks and noises on my receiver when I 1st bought it... until I finally spent the time to setup all my listening modes. After that everything was gravy :)

I'm jealous! I'm trying to debate if my childhood fetish (stop thinking dirty... I'm talking about "Transformers"!) is worth me going out and buying a HD DVD player for! I don't know of any other movies Id get for HD DVD that I dont already own on Blu Ray.

Thanks mrgribbles, to be completely honest, I also have a couple of test DVDs which include frequency ramps. problem here is I have no idea what a txt curve is like in order to match the levels against it.

Hi garypen
Then, you should leave the EQ to off. That is the great thing about being to disable/enable it instantly. You can A/B compare. And, if OFF sounds better than ON, leave it OFF. Too bad onkyo does not provide a couple of memory banks to store settings...

I still like to give it a couple more chances to the eq before I give up.
In case I find a better setting, I would let youn know how I have achieved it of course.
You see, I HAVE TO TRY, 'cause I can already hear that thin voice silentlty mourning: upgrade, upgrade, upgrade......lexicon....mcintosh...upgrade, upgrade, upgrade....
Cheers,
Stefano
Why not? Go for it!!!! A2's are $227 at Amazon. I bought an A2 just because of the upcoming remastered Star Trek:Original Series collection.
Only problem is... I like to buy expensive things that dont slack... Id want the best 1080p player they would have.... the a2 isnt even 1080p from what I read....I'd also want the player to decode true hd and dts hd ma in my receiver if I bought one now at this stage.
I heard the A20, even though it does 1080p, its poor 1080p (from what I read at least)
.. so that means I'd need the XA2 or the newer 3 series players... so i'd be right back up to spendin lots of dough... and all for just a transformers. :(

I am in the opposite situation with being an HD DVD owner and trying to decide if I should buy a Blu Ray player or not. I picked up a new A2 for under $200 and love it. If I could do the same with Blu Ray I would in a heartbeat. However, entry level Blu Ray players are a good bit more. The upcoming Disney releases might push me over the edge.
Transcend 10-18-07, 11:54 AM Powering off a connected device and running it up to max produces no hum or noise whatsoever.
All my connections are HDMI. mrgribbles, same with me - my issue is only with my component-analog connections. No noise over HDMI with the odd exception of the Xbox Dashboard. Powered off or Paused during play == NO NOISE no matter what listening mode I use.

A lot of people hate the Spiderman movies .. but I think they visually look great.. I am looking forward to Spiderman trilogy on Blu Ray probably more then any release before it.

Stop what you're doing right now. Go to a B&M, pay full retail if you have to, take home the bundle, plug it and get ready for the ride of your life. You will not regret one nickel.

Yes, I'm one of those people who explores every menu, sub menu, sub-sub menu, etc. and uses every option I can. ;) I even write down my settings once I find "perfection".
Remember I'm currently using analog audio connects with my component video connections - I'm not sure anyone else tested with analong inputs. It seems everyone who doesn't have an issue with noise is using all HDMI. I'll re-evaluate once my optic cable arrives.
This isn't clicks and pops.

This thread is all over the place most time anyway so I will go ahead and ask while we are on the subject. What is the Blu Ray player to have right now? I have read a little bit about the new Sharp model which is getting a lot of attention.

I really haven't had a chance to do any of that yet. I'll check it out more in depth this weekend and set up the listening modes.
If I set the HD DVD source as TrueHD and play a disc without a TrueHD track will it convert it? or will it automatically play it in the other format?

Some sort of blu is in my short term future too. A few months ago it seemed like Blu-ray had the content, now I'm less sure. Actually I am sure, I want it all. Kind of like woots' position with HD, I'm just not going to get another player that doesn't do it all. The Sammy 1400 is awfully close. So's the Sharp. I'm going to wait until the slam dunk XA2 update hits and then I'll dive into the Blu-lagoon. Good luck with your choices.

PS3 is what I use here for Blu Rays (you may think a game console would slack as a player, but not in this internet enabled firmware updating generation)... I will most likely upgrade that to a dual format player (which is really the dream I'm holding out for).. if that dream doesn't happen by 1st quarter 2008... then I will probably buy a stand alone HD DVD player and a stand alone Blu Ray player and leave my PS3 alone.
Something I found interesting. Even though PS3 has fallen behind in ability as a Blu Ray player (as far as DTS HD MA and external decoding outing of HD formats) it still shines in one category... lots and lots of firmware updates right at Sony's fingertips. That recent Fantastic Four release had some new interactive features that didn't allow playback on many of the stand a lone blu ray player (sony dropped the ball on giving firmware to 3rd parties to prepare for that) Anyhow, Ps3 played that movie no problem at all. (NOTE: The PS3 will be gettin DTS HD MA decoding soon)
I am waiting for Samsung 5000 which is dual format, allows external audio decoding of HD formats and has a Reon chip. Not to mention I'd love to shrink my player footprint to 1 unit instead of going 2. That player got pushed back to christmas time frame.. so we shall see! I hope they don't mess it up.

Me too, although the projected MSRP sounds ridiculous IMO. Currently my xbox360 elite is my only dvd player. Never seen HD or BD :o. Your delimma in post #2521 is exactly why I haven't joined either bandwagon.
I really haven't had a chance to do any of that yet. I'll check it out more in depth this weekend and set up the listening modes.
If I set the HD DVD source as TrueHD and play a disc without a TrueHD track will it convert it? or will it automatically play it in the other format?
If your player outputs in "raw bistream" and allows your receiver to decode True HD and DTS HD MA... then if the receiver will detect that format playing... by setting up listening modes to select True HD/DTS HD MA upon detection.. then yes it selects it for you and plays back with that setting instead of something else.
If your player doesn't output in those formats to your receiver.. its not going to do any decoding in the receiver in those formats. Your player will decode it internally (if its capable of doing so) and send it to your receiver pre decoded. Then you have to select which DSP you want to decode that signal at. I myself am very fond of PLIIx Movie for nearly everything (except music.. music I like All Channel Stereo for the sheer volume) My PS3 outputs to multichannel PCM.. instead of sending out undecoded TRUE HD ... I have it go to PLIIx as my DSP for that PCM data.

ITS SO WORTH joining at the very least ONE of those bandwagons ... you sound like a gamer... PS3 isnt a bad deal.. I hear rumors of the price dropping to 400 bucks by christmas so its getting in the realm of doable for a lot of hesitant folks... xbox 360 owns it game library wise and online wise.. up and down though. :)
HD DVD and Blu Rays.......You will love the sound quality (forget the visual quality) the SOUND quality will be second to none you have experienced yet... the visual quality is about on par with some of the "best" HDTV broadcasts I seen. (I know this is 1080p vs 1080i slander.. but I'm being serious... outside of clarity of the movie when you pause it.. I don't see much difference... its all about the uncompressed audio tracks though... they sound so .. just... WOW! :)
I am with you on that Samsung 5000.. I hope it lives up to its expectations.. 1000 bucks or so would make it worth it if it did.
(note: I did say HD (disc) formats are on par with the "best" HDTV broadcast... not the worst ... before you flame me plz! .. and yes I know TV will add some nasty graininess to the look cuase its more compressed... i know i know! .. still... looks about the same :D ... but the sound is no where close!)
mrgribbles 10-18-07, 12:40 PM Discovery channel HD, puts many Hi Def DVDs to shame. I hear that they shoot some of their stuff with 30fps cameras so theres no 24 to 60 telecine issues. Great visuals.

Its true though we are a chatty group who loses its 705 direction time to time (you can just blame me, I don't mind) :D.
Honestly though its why i have grown to enjoy keeping up with this thread every day... its funny.. broadly informative.. and touches on ALL things HD... which is my new hobby.
Besides... if it wasn't got his thread.. I wouldn't have bought my Harmony remote! ;)

Im not sure if you have HGTV HD and Food Network HD where you live yet... but those 2 channels are insanely crystal clear too... but yea man, discovery HD is so damn nice... nothing like perfect hi def visuals of far away places!
In fact, when Planet Earth was airing on Discovery network they also hosted it through HD ondemand via Comcast... I bought Planet Earth on Blu Ray.. by the time I got it I was able to compare frame to frame with exact shows and scenes from Ondemand vs Blu ray.. and even when paused I saw VERY little differences. I kept flipping back and forth between sources for a good hour that day.
PS: NM about the where you live comment.. I forgot for a sec you live in same area as me... those channels I mentioned look ultra sharp right???

Hello (name here)
There may be a circuitry trip on the DSP board that's causing the noise in the speaker. To get that problem fixed, you will have bring the unit into an authorized service center with a copy of your receipt. To locate an authorized service center you can log onto our website (ONKYOUSA.COM). However, if you are still in the 30 day (some dealers are 14 days) exchange/return warranty, you can exchange out the unit from the dealer you purchased it from.

Uptown193 10-18-07, 01:00 PM I am in the opposite situation with being an HD DVD owner and trying to decide if I should buy a Blu Ray player or not. I picked up a new A2 for under $200 and love it. If I could do the same with Blu Ray I would in a heartbeat. However, entry level Blu Ray players are a good bit more. The upcoming Disney releases might push me over the edge.

Thanks, all in good time. :)
How is the picture quality when upconverting (de-interlacing?) to HDMI from a component signal? I tried my PS2 with the included composite video cable and the PQ was HORRIBLE. I bought a component video cable for it to test. Also the aspect ratio when set to "720p" mode was off and PQ was bad.
Is the deinterlacing in this receiver really that bad? Also I've noticed "rolling" video with some analog sources.. namely NTSC games (i live in PAL-land)..

iammongo 10-18-07, 01:16 PM Same with me mrgribbles. I use axiom speakers which are pretty efficient, around 90db i think. Speaker efficiency can make a very big difference in how loud -20 sounds.
I have an Axiom speaker setup also and i have to say that transformers sounded pretty great at -10, I did run my ep500 sub another +3 from the standard settings.

Especially since I didn't even mention DSP's. Here's what I said:
I have speaker noise with the TX-SR705 UNLESS I'm using Pure Audio, in which case I have NO noise through the speakers at all even at max volume.
Uptown193,
Ok, is time to take those sticker off. :D
iammongo 10-18-07, 01:35 PM Me too, although the projected MSRP sounds ridiculous IMO. Currently my xbox360 elite is my only dvd player. Never seen HD or BD :o. Your delimma in post #2521 is exactly why I haven't joined either bandwagon.
I don't want to carry the HD DVD, Bluray war over here but right now you can get a crazy Bluray collection going really cheap.. almost everyone (as in amazon, bestbuy, CC, fry's etc etc etc) Is running Buy one get one sales on BD titles. At roughly 10 dollars each you can't go wrong.

Hi jcberg,
I will test just that this coming Saturday. I'll report soon after, even though I am not expecting much out of it. my only hope is it can at least simply transpose (no d/i- no upscaling) the component signal I am providing the 705 with (525/720 p from the xbox). if you tell me what res the PS2 comes out of component and what res you would like to upconvert to, I can try that for you.

On paper it should not be that bad since it shares the same faruja chip my philips 963 sa sported, which did a rather good job. in reality it behaves far worse, at least when coming out in component. let's hope it fares better with hdmi

appdevman 10-18-07, 02:33 PM I am buying one of these today.
I have a HD DVD player AND a PS3/BluRay player; as you know, each can be set to send bitstream or OR do the rendering and send PCM to receiver. I will be using only HDMI cables from source to the receiver - I will not run the TOSLINK optical 5.1 cables.
Based on knowing I have this equipment, what is the BEST audio configuration:
a.) setting the source devices to send bitstream and let this new reciever do the rendering OR
b.) set them to output PCM, and have the devices do the rendering first.
To the best of my knowledge, both the devices have HDMI 1.3a or later, they are not "earlier" type devices.
I ask this because I have seen discussion here about "lossless" and "lossy", both terms I don't really understand.
And lastly, this is to confirm I'm actually getting the new audio types (TrueHD, Dolby Digital, and uncompressed PCM) - not just think I'm getting them.
Thanks guys,
appdevman;)

On another note, I presently have a 7.0 surround system now, looking to get a sub to complete the 7.1. The last sub I had I had to connect the FL, FR and center to the rear of the sub then from sub to the receiver, is this how all subs are connected or is there some that only required one wire connection type or both connection types? Please advise.

Hi! Thanks for helping out! I am getting my component cable soon though but it doesn't hurt to share experiences :)
My PS2 generally outputs 576i/50hz for most games. It does have a mod chip though which allows me to play NTSC games (480i/60hz, and i can convert it to PAL with no issues at all running directly to TV! Through the Onkyo the video starts "rolling" like on a broken VHS tape) and run applications, including a very nice media player which can play MPEG2/4 and DivX/XviD and output 480,576,720 i/p and 1080i. The DVD player in the PS2 can also output 480p (dunno how good the results are).
I suspect the video chip isn't the only factor in how good the video looks. Switching the PS2 though the Onkyo using composite video results in a blurry, shrunken "washed out" picture.
On another note, the Onkyo should accept both NTSC and PAL video in, right? Why am i getting this rolling video issue? :(

There are many flavors of sub's out there but if you really want to impress yourself buy a powered one. It will connect with as little as 1 cable and and a power cord. I'm not sure how much bass you want but there is a sweet spot in the 1k range with offerings from HSU, SVS, Axiom and i'm sure alot of others.

I get the same thing with my PS2 Component cables (particularly the shrunken "washed out" effect), but I expected as much. My PS2 has been too painful to play, with or without a receiver, since we sold our standard-def Sony Wega TV. The best I can hope for is for all my Ps2 games to be compatible with the PS3, whenever we finally buy one.

According to CNET the analog to HDMI upconvertion is not that good for both the 605 & 805. The 605, 705 & 805 all use the same chip so expect equal results.
From CNET: http://reviews.cnet.com/av-receivers/onkyo-tx-sr805-black/4505-6466_7-32430613.html?tag=prod.txt.1#more
Video performance
In terms of video performance, we ran into the same issues with the TX-SR805 that we did with the TX-SR605. We began our tests running the Toshiba HD-A20 via S-Video to the TX-SR805 connected to the Panasonic TH-50PHD9UK via HDMI. This tests the TXSR805's ability to deinterlace the incoming 480i signal. We took a look at Silicon Optix's HQV test suite, with the TX-SR805 failing to pass the initial resolution test, which means that it can't deliver all the detail of 480i sources when upconverting. Moving onto the jaggies tests, the TX-SR805 performed better, handling tests involving a rotating white line, three shifting lines and footage of a waving flag with ease.
Where the TX-SR805 struggled the most was with any test that required 2:3 pull-down processing. We first saw this on the racecar test on the HQV test disc, and we saw plenty of moire in the stands as its film processing never kicked in. The same behavior was confirmed in actual program material. For instance, on the introduction to Star Trek: Insurrection, there were jaggies on the hulls of the boats where there should have been a smooth, curved line. Similarly, the introduction to Seabiscuit was filled with tons of jaggies, and the image on the screen often seemed to pulsate because of how much the receiver was struggling. While many of the video-quality issues we mention are subtle, this is not and will bother anyone even mildly sensitive to video quality. To be fair, these artifacts will mostly show up only on video components that display film-based material, but we noticed them much less when using, for instance, an Xbox 360 in standard-def mode. However, while we were willing to overlook for the most part some of the video processing deficiencies of the TX-SR605 because of its low price, it's harder to overlook the same issues on a receiver that costs twice as much. Videophiles would be well advised to bite the bullet and consider one of the higher-priced receivers that offer built-in HQV video processing, such as the Onkyo TX-SR875 or the Denon AVR-3808CI.

Yep, and when CNET actually says something bad about a product.. well, it's bad.
Anyway, how's the sound quality in this unit? I am moving right now so i have not had a chance to hear it with my full speaker setup and stuff, just some general testing with some cheaper speakers I've had laying around.
I like a warm tone with authority and push in the bass range and a midrange that's clear, open and detailed but not.. well i dunno what to say, boring maybe? I'd rather have it a bit honky. I don't like a thin, piercing trebly tone and i hate midrange that sounds like it's trapped in a tin can full of bees where it's impossible to pick out the individual instruments from the mix and the whole thing just turns into a muddy mid-range mushup. I like definition, detail and authority.
Will i be disappointed?

Ya these are the low end series as far as upconverting goes. You gotta get the Onkyo 905 for the sexy Faroudja 1080p upconvert. In the end... outside of SD television channels I have no need for that. I prefer to to stick to native 1080i & 1080p sources for the refined crystal clarity I have grown to love.

This receiver sounds amazing. However listen to this receiver before you jump in and see if its for you. This receiver when you 1st listen to it and have everything set up properly.. tends to sound like a considerable step up in clarity, sharp tone and punch... from what most people are used to before this receiver.
If you like that "warm" effect I'd stay away from digital receivers and go high end old school designed external tube amps... nothing like tube amps for "warmth".

Well i already own it.. :o
About tube amps.. I play guitar (try finding a guitarist with a solid state amp) and i tinker with them on the side whenever i have some spare time.. however i believe you can also make a fine sounding product using for example power MOSFETs just as well as KT88's, 6L6's, EL34's or 6550's.. In the end i believe the overall design and topology of the circuit is more important than the types of components used. Tubes however are generally more robust devices (electrically, not mechanically) and they can run in a much simpler topology.. way less negative feedback for instance (Onkyo also use this in their WRAT technology? I think it minimizes negative feedback). Save for the output transformer and lower damping factor..
Anyway with a warm tone i think of a tone with a lot of information intact in the lower midrange (200hz-2khz), maybe at the cost of some higher midrange, with a smooth treble response that's not fizzy or too aggressive. The warmth you're referring to i guess is even harmonic distortion.. which does indeed sound rather pleasing :) I found out I'm somewhat of a tin ear anyway so I've lowered my standards quite a bit lately and bought into less hype ;)
For some examples, I feel most of the Pioneer receivers sound tinny/trebly and have an "encapsulated" or trapped-sounding midrange that's rather uninteresting, neither warm or cold. My Pioneer car receiver is crap. Other people seem to really like my car stereo though, i think they go more by the brand on the face plate and adjust their perception of sound according to the brand's reputation? Strange how people have become..
Jeremy Anderson 10-18-07, 04:44 PM Yep, and when CNET actually says something bad about a product.. well, it's bad.

Onkyos are historically more neutral sounding than warm. You won't have a problem with the detail and definition of the 705, but if you're looking for a warmer tone, the 705's lack of coloration of mid-bass may come across as a bit sterile to you. If you're looking for a warmer sounding receiver, I've heard that Yamahas have more of a warm sound.
Personally, I prefer the Onkyo sound. After taking the effort to blend my SVS sub and Buttkicker in with my Polk speakers, I get a clean detailed sound with bass that will rattle the fillings out of your head if called for. I watched Ratatouille the other night at around -12 and was floored by how amazing it sounded.

I've noticed tolerable degradation from hdmi ---> hdmi. In my case, the picture was not as good as running the video signal directly from the source to the television.
Update (10/22/2007): After changing the output of my motorola box and onkyo receiver to 720p (which is also the output of my tele), I noticed a dramatic improvement in picture quality. In fact, the picture quality is pretty darn impressive.
Well, you made me do it.
Today, I set up the KEF KHT 3005 surround speakers to go with the 705. Yes, I got rid of that lousy KLM sub. The sound is great particularly the sub. I'm happy, albeit, poorer.
Now, do I stick with 5:1 or get two more speakers and go 7:1? Decisions, decisions.

I have a Pioneer 5070HD plasma and i dont notice any degradation in PQ. I guess mainly b/c the 5070 has a awesome interlacer or deinterlacer. I get the same if not better PQ running my 5070 from the source to the receiver back to the 5070 (via HDMI to HDMI, full digital connection). No, it doesn't. But if you're really into radio, I ended up buying the 705 and a Sangean HDT-1X tuner and the combo works like a charm. According to a 905 owner (the 905 has an HD tuner built in) who also owns the Sangean, it is a better tuner than what you will find in either Onkyo model. BTW, the 905 is the only Onkyo model with HD-Radio.

I'm in the same boat here, when I crank up the ps3 to the max (either on the XMB or playing a movie) can hear the speaker hissing and some small buzz too, but im assuming this is the 'normal' hissing that i've always heard on pretty much every system when turning speakers up with no audio playback.
I'm undecided as to how much this qualifies for a ''time to think of a denon' or not :(
All my connections are thru HDMI. Speakers are only a pair of Polk's rti6. I'm building my system little by little
Uptown193 10-18-07, 11:49 PM I'm in the same boat here, when I crank up the ps3 to the max (either on the XMB or playing a movie) can hear the speaker hissing and some small buzz too, but im assuming this is the 'normal' hissing that i've always heard on pretty much every system when turning speakers up with no audio playback.

I think any receiver out there will have a lil hissing or buzz if u raise the volume up high and play no sound, its normal. I also have new DefTech Promonitors and all HDMI connections. What you think about that woots or mrgibbles?

Yeah that's been my understanding all my life too. Of course, I'm not an audiophile (which is not a bad thing.. it gets expensive FAST) so maybe I've been wrong all this time? :)
Also, I think I'm now trying to identify any hissing or even lip-sync issues every time I'm watching tv/gaming. Instead of concentrating in actually enjoying the task at hand, hehe.
Indy aka Rex 10-19-07, 12:29 AM Has anyone here tried the hidden upscaling feature on a PS2/Dreamcast/Gamecube or PS1?
And how does it compare to the 605?
CSEmoses 10-19-07, 12:50 AM so what yer saying is, beyond the 705 it's just more power and some peripheral type features (XM / Sirius radio, etc.) ?
I'm in a large two bedroom basement suite (~4,000 cubic ft) and my speakers are Boston Acoustics A-100 mains with a Boston VR-12 center ... crappy Teac surrounds for now.
Is 100w per channel a hefty amount of power?
I'm using a Yamaha Natural Sound RX-V530 right now, which looks like it's rated for 75w.
check it out here: http://www.yamaha.com/yec/products/productdetail.html?CNTID=200240&CTID=5000300
I guess that's one reason I wonder whether the 805 or 875 would be better, a more substantial increase in watts per channel.
Fyi, i'm SO not an audio tech of any real sort. Computers are my thing. So apologies for sounding like an audio noob ;)
EDIT** oh, okay, now i remember why i wanted more power. The VR12 from Boston Acoustics reccomended power is 250 watts:
"VR12 Lynnfield, Dual 6.5" full-range, 4.5" midrange, 1" tweeter 94-00 250 watts $400/ea" directly from the manuf. website disco products info section.
devilchicken 10-19-07, 04:39 AM Just a little extra info regarding the hissing/buzzing:
Fiddling around my my Oppo dvd player (also connected thru HDMI) I set the audio output to RAW, then played a movie and paused it to crank it up, results: Silence. I couldn't hear a hiss or buzz coming from the speakers.
Afterwards I went back to the ps3 (HDMI too) and did the same thing, set the dvd and the bd/dvd output to bitstream and played another movie: Same result, total silence even when dialed all the way to max.
The display on the 705 had the red dolby digital light on (and not the PCM one, obviously).
So the question is: is this a problem with the PCM decoding? Isn't it PCM supposed to be better than bitstream? I find it odd that on both the dvd player and the ps3 when set to bistream produce no hiss. Even pure audio on PCM produces an audible hiss at around 70 and up for me.. strange.
Anyway, time to head to bed, hopefully some other ppl will have even more info on this after i come back from work tomorrow. :D
Amazon has a great price on the 705 right now. Anyone know if Amazon is a good place to buy electronics?
i actually just got my 705 from amazon. no tax, free shipping, and triple points on my amazon card.
not only that, but if the price goes down within 30 days, just send them an email and they'll adjust it for you. i just noticed the price is $5.20 lower than when i bought it on 10/11.. it's only $5, but, i'll take it!
garypen 10-19-07, 11:18 AM so what yer saying is, beyond the 705 it's just more power and some peripheral type features (XM / Sirius radio, etc.) I believe the the 805 and 875 are made in Japan vs Maylasia for the 705. From what people have said, there is a noticeable difference in build quality.
The add'l power of the 805/875 will help, of course. More power always helps. It is always better to have more power than you need, than just enough.
Plus, if audio quality really is a big concern, the 805 and 875 have the latest Burr Brown DAC's.
And, if video upscaling quality is a big concern, the 875 has a Reon HQV processor.
So, if you have the money, you should go for the 875. Otherwise, choose the 805. But, if budget is a big concern, the 705 is the one for you.
One other thing - Personally...I think the 805/875 with their smooth front panels and larger displays look much better than the 705/605 which are kinda ugly with the tiny displays and zillions of buttons.

From one audio noob to another I'll try to help you with your question (even if i'm wrong someone else will pick apart my answer and get you the info you want).
First of all I don't believe that 10-30 WPC more power is very significant, the DB increase wouldn't be very much at all. That being said 4000 cubic feet is quite a large area and will definately take some muscle.
My 705 is in a 2500 cubic foot room and sounds very loud at -10 (with 0 being reference)
I believe the 805's audio advantages are a slightly higher thx certification and the burr brown Dac's.
If my memory serves me correctly the 7xx series from Onkyo has always been the best bang for your buck model.
JoeFigueiredo 10-19-07, 11:57 AM I'm going to pick up a Bluray player to go with my Onkyo 705.
Obviously the Samsung 1400 outputs bitstream to the Onkyo for DTH and DTSMA. The PS3 decodes it internally and sends it PCM over HDMI.
However, the 1400 is only a profile 1.0 player while the PS3 will be 1.1 and may even be able to be 2.0 down the road.
So, I'm torn between which one to choose as my Bluray player (I'm going neutral by also picking up the A35 which sends HBR via HDMI to the Onkyo).
My question is:
Is there a significant enough difference between the the two audio workflows (PS3 and 1400) to justify forsaking the fact that the PS3 can handle future Bluray profiles? Or should I just get the PS3 now because you can't really tell the difference and then I'd bet set for the future?
(P.S. Noise from the PS3 is also a concern, but I've heard the new 40GB one fan noise is not audible at all from about a few feet away, so I'm willing to entertain the PS3 as my Bluray player).
I don't know! But that kills the "no noise over HDMI" theory - we've found one exception. ;)
I don't think it does, the 360 dash may have something there we don't know about and/or the way the audio ports are handled...
Transcend 10-19-07, 12:40 PM I did your test and yes i hear feedback in the speaker, but i assume thats normal. no?
I do need to clarify that this testing with no audio input was just to isolate the extra noise; I actually hear it while watching TV at normal listening levels, particularly when only the center/front speakers are active -- I can hear the noise coming through the side surrounds, which are otherwise inactive. This might only be noticeable when using analog audio connections, as I currently am using with my cable STB. But, still, I don't think I should be getting noise with my audio, analog or not, especially when Pure Audio solves the problem.
csrini1 10-19-07, 12:43 PM Ok, so i can get a heck of a discount on Onkyo at work, and it sure seems like bang for your buck is all Onkyo these days.
Would someone be kind enough to tell me the core differences between the 705, 805, and 875, aside from the increased power across all channels?
I dont care about the XM / Sirius satellite radio stuff, at all.
I guess what I really would _love_ is for someone who knows the " in's and out's" of these receivers to give a boiled down version of what one gets for one's coin, going up the model line, starting @ the 705.
Thanks a TON, whoever answers.
no offense, go to *******.com, select your models and hit compare, and you can see for yourself the features and price and decide what is best for you. if you are getting a heck of a discount then go with 875 or 905.
csrini1 10-19-07, 12:47 PM My friend, go 7.1, trust me you will love it and notice a big difference in SQ, makes you feel like your in the movie. Your probably saying to yourself how much different cant it be, thats what i said also until i set it up last Sunday and watched the Transformers on HD DVD. Now im watchin all my DVD, HD DVD and BD over again. Ima quote Sylvester Stallone "Go for it". By the way hes making Rambo 4.
question to uptown/woots or anybody, i have 5.1 setup but am tempted to go to 7.1, and at the same time i am cheap!! I have kef 2005 5.1 setup. So for 7.1, do you guys recommend the other 2 speakers also to be kef or some cheap polk speakers from frys with 8 ohm suffice??

For the Moneyi think the PS3 is the better choice.. My 60GB model does put out more noise than i like but it gets lost as soon as you turn the volume up to even a moderate level.
I'm not sold on the fact that the bitstream capability of the 1400 will make the audio actually sound any better than the ps3...The enthusiasts (woots maybe?;)) just want to see as many lights on the onkyo display as possible.
I like the PS3 because of alot of it's other capabilities.. streaming media content, the browser, and of course the games.
I hear rumor that the 40gb model will have spiderman3 packaged with it as well.
The only downside i saw to the PS3 was the fact that the remote is bluetooth ... I had to spend 20 bucks on the nyko coolwave ps3 remote with USB dongle and learn the commands to my harmony. This works decently (sometimes when i hit the enter button the cursor will move first then select..annoying) but cannot control the power on/off function.
Uptown193 10-19-07, 12:56 PM question to uptown/woots or anybody, i have 5.1 setup but am tempted to go to 7.1, and at the same time i am cheap!! I have kef 2005 5.1 setup. Well for me personally I have 5.1 DefTech speakers and my other 2 speakers for the 7.1 I have old JBL500 speakers from 1999 which are also 8 ohms. For me they do the job and sound really nice. I get nice clear sound from them no distortion at all. So im assuming they so called cheap Polks that you wanna buy will be just as good for the rear surrounds. You don't need anything expensive in that back. Try them out, im sure u can always return them if you not satisfied.

Thanks for the feedback. I am leaning towards picking up the 40GB model when it arrives here in Canada...if the 1400 played everything flawlessly and was profile 1.1 I'd pick that up today. Alas, it likely may have to be the PS3, but the lack of functioning remote just burns me. i have a Harmony too (659), and I have a nice sleek and sexy home theater (106" screen FP, theater seats, etc.)...it just begs for standalone components and not a gaming console, but what can I do if I want bluray.
I really did want to just put the whole bitstream from 1400 vs PCM from PS3 to Onkyo 705 to rest. i need someone to say "it sounds pretty much identical", and then I'd get a PS3. Otherwise, I'm always going to be thinking that the 1400 could sound better.

Well just to put my 2 cents in i had my 705 for a week now and i have not gone beyond the -2db range while watching tv or a movie or video game for that matter, its very loud, maybe its b/c i have awesome DefTech speakers, im sure it helps. So i cant imagine having the 805 or 875, I probably wont pass the -15db range. The bottom line is the 705 is a great buy and best bang for the buck compared to other receivers out there with same features. However, if you got a big fat wallet and a very big equipment rack and with at least 15" of height space "go for it". I would have.

Silver5656 10-19-07, 02:28 PM hmmmm im still concerned about the hdmi-->hdmi degradation, as well as any other degradation that might occur when hooking up components through the 705. Any other input on this? I would imagine that using the receiver as a through put should not cause any loss in video/audio quality.......anybody have any other reviews that might show otherwise?

I have my for only a couple days now. Haven't even had the time to run it through the Audyssey setup. Granted I have always used cheap Sony receivers in the past, but DAM, my DefTech speakers have never sounded this good and loud before.
Can't wait to run Audyssey setup and see how that changes things.

My honest opinion to you is that the best way to know if the HDMI-->HDMI degradation is going to affect you is to try the receiver yourself. The truth is that you're going to see a lot of post stating "no" but there is always going to be someone that is going to say "yes" and this back-n-forth is going to mess with your head. Uptown193, like me, almost didn't buy the Onkyo because of concern of heat/lip-sync/delay issues and you know what my receiver so far has been trouble free (knock on wood) and I believe Uptown193 is also happy with his and sure other users are. Buy the receiver from a place with a good return policy, try it, if it doesn't meet your expectation just return it and move on.

I have a tendency to research things to death before i buy and i've noticed (as i'm sure most everyone else has) that more people are motivated to post on a message board when they are unhappy with a product. When everything is fine and dandy most people just enjoy the product and don't bother posting the positive experience.
Just in the last several months i had doubts about --
Onkyo 705 - heat issues, lip sync, terrible customer service
harmony 880 - poor design that leads to charging failures
axiom speakers - too forward, too bright and harsh
PS3 - no games that are any good, too hot, too many bugs
bluray movies - too buggy, format going to fail because of paramount switch to HDDVD
I'm happy to say that i ignored the doubters on all of these items and as of today I'm a totally happy customer of all of these companies.

iammongo,
I'm with you. I some point you have to say f** it and just f** buy it and then f** try it your self. If not you'll never buy anything. I would still be watching DVDs on a 27" RCA TV and listening music using a cheap Kenwood receiver. Forums can be a good research tool but it's still not the bible on what equipment to buy.

Always "voice match" your speaker set if you have the ability to (a rule of thumb you should observe whenever possible). When they are similar speakers so they all behave with same characteristics and wont be out of kilter frequency response and tonality wise.
accessories4less.com sells Kef 2001 and KEf 3001 scratch and dent pairs for cheap.
Looks like at the moment they just have silver 3001 pairs.. keep an eye out though there stock fluctuates frequently. http://www.accessories4less.com/cgi-bin/item/KEFHTS3001SLV
I got a black 3001 set off these guys and the "scratch and dent quality" well.. 1 speaker was perfect .. the other had a lil scratch on the foot that I couldn't even barely notice.. and when wall mounted is invisible.

Lonesomedave 10-19-07, 06:07 PM I am about to pick up the Onyko TX-SR705 this weekend. My current set of speakers are Fronts - DCM KX12 series 2, Center - Optimus (Radio Shack) , Sides - Optimus STS 1230. Rears - Optimus Pro LX5II . My large JBL sub has died a few years back.
My question is if the new receiver can be used for a while without a SubWoofer? I will get one later on by not just yet. And will Audyssey’s MultEQ® XT be able to work with out the sub?
Lonesomedave
Just got home with my second receiver from CentreHiFi (Canada).
The first one I returned it because anything plugged in DVD IN, ( S-Video or Composite) just wasn't upscaled or passed trough to Composite or HDMI . I called the store and they asked me to return it telling me that it's a faulty receiver.
I've tried it with Yamaha DV-S5750 DVD player, Scientific Atlanta cable box and a Sony camcorder.
Component in was working nicely.
Now I have the same issues with the second one. I know that I shouldn't even bother because I will never use them anyway but it just bugs me.
Just to mention that my DVd player works with every other input on the receiver like the CABLE-SAT or VCR-DVR even AUX.
Any ideas?
topdawgfla 10-19-07, 06:20 PM I have the Toshiba hd-a35 attached to my Onkyo Tx-SR705, and I can figure out what is the best listening mode for a movie like transformers HD DVD. I know most HD DVD movies only uses 5.1. To get to 7.1, you really must use something like Dolby Pro Logix IIx Movie Mode or THX Select2 Cinema. However, I can't really tell the difference. Any one has any opinion on the best listening mode for a movie. Beyond that, does it matter if it is a Dolby Digital Plus Movie as opposed to a Dolby Tru HD 5.1 movie while using bitstream. Thanks in advance for any thoughts.
Hans_Gruber 10-19-07, 06:21 PM My 705 worked out my sub levels just fine! I don't have a very powerful/large sub (wharfedale Sw150), but Audissey adjusted the volume & etc. just right.
I still have a problem with component in -> hdmi out. Terrible pixelation & total loss of picture. Even tried the hidden menu with "720p" and "auto" settings to no avail.
Currently using my digital setup box with composite. It works, but picture quality is like vhs. Help?

You have to set HDMI Monitor setting to YES (see page 47) for the receiver to upconvert analog video signals to HDMI.

I've done that. The DVD plugged in CABLE-SAT works.
But not with the DVD In.
I even tried with the progressive scan off (DVD player)
AggiePilk 10-19-07, 07:02 PM I have the 705 used as a pre amp with a B&K 7 X 125W Amp. Sounded great when I started it up. Sounded even better when I ran Audessy. Unbelievable with 300 played through my Toshiba A1 via toslink. 300 was a rental so it's gone back to Netflix.
Here is the problem. I hooked up the A1 via HDMI. I set the A1 HDMI out to Auto. I also connected the 5.1 analogs just for comparison. I played Batman Returns and selected the True HD track. Audio was very low and it didn't have much surround action. I switched to 5.1 and still didn't sound good.
Switched back to HDMI and still not great even though the 705 showed Multichannel PCM and Pro Logic IIx via HDMI
Here is the problem. I'm now convinced that it doesn't sound right. I'm thinking about resetting it and redoing everything. What dou you guys think?

devilchicken 10-19-07, 09:12 PM I do need to clarify that this testing with no audio input was just to isolate the extra noise; I actually hear it while watching TV at normal listening levels, particularly when only the center/front speakers are active -- I can hear the noise coming through the side surrounds, which are otherwise inactive. This might only be noticeable when using analog audio connections, as I currently am using with my cable STB. But, still, I don't think I should be getting noise with my audio, analog or not, especially when Pure Audio solves the problem.
Well I just picked up a pair of rti8's at fry's and while there I tested the 705 they had there by turning it up high and muting it, there was no extra hissing from the speakers at all and it was pcm audio thru hdmi, just like my connetion at home (which does hiss). Could this be because they had a full 5.1 system and not just the front speakers like i do here?

Well, I have 5.1, and no noise over HDMI either (with the one odd exception of the Xbox Dashboard).
So you're getting noise over HDMI-In --> HDMI-out connections?:confused:
Thanks a lot.
I've done that. The DVD plugged in CABLE-SAT works.
But not with the DVD In.
I even tried with the progressive scan off (DVD player)
Check the HDMI and Component Video setup (pages 48 & 49) and make sure "---" is selected for the DVD input on both screen. I believe it should be like that by default but I don't remember.

Yes, theres hissing/noise over HDMI-In --> HDMI-Out. However, and I realized this yesterday, this is only when the receiver is getting a PCM signal.
I don't know if you can set the dvd audio output on the 360 to bitstream instead of pcm, but if so, do it. Or alternately try setting your dvd player to output RAW or bitstream and see if you can hear any noise.
I get absolutely no noise at all when its RAW or bitstream (dolby digital light on, pcm light off on the receiver's display).
Maybe there's a batch of faulty receivers and some of us got unlucky with them?
ShmengeTravel 10-20-07, 01:08 AM OK. I have a little bit of a problem, to make a long story short I have my PC hooked up using the 7.1 analog rca inputs, and I had it running using Multich. Then I went to switch on my PS3, and when I switched inputs the Multich carried over to the PS3. Now it reads "PCM-Multich-HDMI". How the hell do I turn it off? I've tried hitting every button on the remote, hitting the mutlich button on the remote switches my input back to the PC for some reason. I can't get out of multich mode! :(
Edit- Just as a side note, I CAN get out of it on my PC's input, but its not letting me out of it for the PS3 :( Also, when I first setup the receiver, I changed the name of VCR/DVR to PS3, and now with this whole Multich thing intact after a few seconds PS3 will go away and it will read VCR again. :(

The 705 is showing 'PCM-Multich-HDMI' because you have your PS3 set to do linear PCM rather than bitstream. There's nothing at all wrong with that, it just means that the PS3 is sending uncompressed data to the 705 over HDMI, with more than two channels.
Is there any reason you don't want that to happen?
mrgribbles 10-20-07, 06:38 AM I think any receiver out there will have a lil hissing or buzz if u raise the volume up high and play no sound, its normal. I also have new DefTech Promonitors and all HDMI connections. What you think about that woots or mrgibbles?
Right on target.
mrgribbles 10-20-07, 06:55 AM so what yer saying is, beyond the 705 it's just more power and some peripheral type features (XM / Sirius radio, etc.) ?
Moreso than just the power advantage, the 805 has more features and circuitry upgrades than the 705. The 905 adds again more features and I think more power. Its a money thing. I think the world of my 705 but would I rather have the 905 or a big Denon? Of course. More clean power is always better. But what most don't realize is that for normal listening, IE: watching a DVD, you are probably in the 30-60 watt range or less. Look at your speakers efficiency ratings. 90dB at 1 meter per 1 watt power. 3 ft from the speaker its putting out 90 db (read pretty loud) @ one watt of power. Now at your listening distance the sound is reduced geometrically and the power requirements go up geometrically so the overall sound is well attenuated when it gets to you but seldom are you pushing the top of the output and you don't really want to. A cruising amp will have less induced noise than a stressed amp. If you're concerned put your money in a separate amp for the fronts or buy a more robust AVR. For me the 705 is fine, we be cruisin'.
mrgribbles 10-20-07, 07:04 AM Thanks for the feedback.
Look into the A35 thread in the HD DVD player forum, especially if you like to read a lot of blood letting. Clearly, most who have an A35 and who are bitstreaming DD & DTS lossless material say that it sounds markedly better than player decoded material and PCM transmitted. I want the option to do both and I wouldn't consider adding another to my stable of disk players unless it did both. YMMV.
mrgribbles 10-20-07, 07:09 AM I have a tendency to research things to death before i buy and i've noticed (as i'm sure most everyone else has) that more people are motivated to post on a message board when they are unhappy with a product.
Hoo Wah. Woot, woot woot. Go for it. If we waited for 100% acceptance of anything we'd sill be carving rocks and calling it stone mail.
mrgribbles 10-20-07, 07:16 AM I have the Toshiba hd-a35 attached to my Onkyo Tx-SR705, and I can figure out what is the best listening mode for a movie like transformers HD DVD.
DD PLIIx will give you less voodoo in the presentation. The THX modes will RE-EQ the presentation to take the edge off of the material so that material produced for a large theater will sound better in your home environment. Many, many people swear by THX but I prefer PLIIx. Browse the THX and DD sites for more insight than you want into the competing technologies. Very revealing. Try direct or pure if you like your scotch neat. Very powerful and full, but you'll lose matrixing and Audyssey. Experiment, experiment.

I'll second that emotion, The only time i use THX is when a friend is over and i want some red lights to show up on the face.

Unfortunately for me, theres a huge difference between the hissing using a pcm signal or a bitstream one (no buzzing or hissing whatsoever).

My kinda guy! Take one for the team. Let us know the specs when it finally blows.
Question: Are your bottom fans running? You'll probably have to physically check them I know you can't hear them.
question to uptown/woots or anybody, i have 5.1 setup but am tempted to go to 7.1, and at the same time i am cheap!! I have kef 2005 5.1 setup. So for 7.1, do you guys recommend the other 2 speakers also to be kef or some cheap polk speakers from frys with 8 ohm suffice??
I have the same set now, my Wife didn't like my old setup with my Denon 5600..
I suggest you buy matching kef sats, you can find them at scratch and dent prices (though in like new condition) if you search google...

I am ashamed to say it but it fixed my problem.
So I returned my receiver for nothing.

OK, not so bad, because the dealer even called Onkyo to ask.
So after all they were supposed to know. Right?

Well if it's better then I guess not... but why does it revert itself back to "VCR"? In the name settings I have it set to PS3 and Custom name display, and when I first select it it comes up PS3 for about 5 seconds, then it goes back to VCR.
Also, has anyone tried using an HDMI to DVI converter, connecting their computer to this receiver? For some reason, when I plug in the HDMI for the computer, the computer recognizes the new monitor and then bam, BSOD. It's weird because my other 2 DVI monitors work fine. :(

in all seriousness, sometimes you gotta take a plunge. reviews for all products like the sr705 are supposed to aid you in making your decision, not force you to buy or avoid. think of it this way, reviews are "more like guidelines, instead of rules anyway" :D

...but no noise with Pure Audio...
You know whats ironic about your situation is its totally opposite of mine. When I turn on Pure Audio I start getting that high volume hiss at lower volume levels. Its freaky that its totally inverse for you.
I think any receiver out there will have a lil hissing or buzz if u raise the volume up high and play no sound, its normal. I also have new DefTech Promonitors and all HDMI connections. What you think about that woots or mrgibbles?
The funny thing about "the grass is always greener" philosophy is once you climb the fence you find a whole new group of issues that may be the same/different and even perhaps worse then before.
I have read in the past (google this topic) that amplifier/receiver spec testing does not have a governing body that standardizes the way the tests are carried out, so that they are performed 100% the same with all receiver/amp manufacturers. These companies are permitted to do their own testing in house and post their own specs. There is a loose rule set these companies follow when doing spec readings too.
For example THD (Total harmonic distortion.. which measures clipping of an audio signal at its peak levels)... I have read that always going off this spec as a total gauge of distortion rating will not give you an accurate picture of performance. I have also read certain companies (i wont call out names of companies) typically all pick the lower THD figures fromn the test then normal listening levels, while some other companies give very accurate specs (more of a real world test). When doing this test the higher you crank the wattage the more its going to clip, so by keeping the wattage low you get good numbers.
Generically speaking (not a rule), the more money your spend for an amp its going to get less and less noisy when the volumes cranked to max but you will not get a 100% amp volume with absolutely no hiss (without the use of high frequency EQ notch filter blocking it off). After all, you are "amplifying" so even the smallest noise becomes audible to the human ear when you crank it all up.
You may also notice that little 100-200 dollar receiver will hiss like a rattlesnake even at 50% volume.. so our lil receiver is good being that the hiss doesn't start until around 80% volume. :)
I do audio production work for tv and radio commercials/music in my free time. I often find when I acquire tracks that were recorded outside my studio where I cant use my best mic in the sound isolated vocal booth.. I often get that evil white noisy hiss. Just using an EQ with a lil tweaking I can often notch out the hiss without losing to much of my high end .. so EQ's can be magic for fixing/reducing this kinda issue.
PS: What I said above doesnt fall under the category of false advertising... It's just misleading representation... due to lack of governing standards. A pig is a pig.. but, how do we know for sure who has the fattest pig unless we all use the same scale....lol... no im not a farmer.. not sure where that just came from... but you get it! :D
mustvid 10-20-07, 05:52 PM Well, I am ready to buy the 705. I've waited long enough and decided the CC deal with the 10% coupon is a good deal. Before I buy a AAA membership I was wondering if anyone had a membership that has not used the 10% discount I could use. I've seen this offered on here a few times so I thought I would give it try.
Uptown193 10-20-07, 06:32 PM I would like to thank the gentleman who recommend that I return my 705 at CC and purchase a gift card so I can buy the 705 on CC website with the AAA coupon for in-store pickup @ $633 with tax. That plan worked out very well and on top of it I save approx. $70 doing so. So thats extra money in my pocket now. Now I can get that cooler/fan for my receiver. Thank you very much homeboy. :) :D ;)

Uptown193 10-20-07, 07:13 PM woots: thanks for explaining that. To be honest I dont even hear the hiss/buzz unless my ear is next to my speakers or it is very very quiet (which is never living in NYC) and the volume is up high and no sound is coming out which neither of the 2 ever happen. So it dont bother me at all. Im just going to enjoy my receiver now and have fun with 7.0 (no sub, Deftech Promonitors gives a lot of bass) and the extra $70 bucks. lol. Cheers

I think I would prefer to buy locally though if possible. I am waiting thate maybe someone will offer up a number who has not used their coupon. Your setup looks really nice!

Woots,
Can you set your dvd player (or ps3/360 if possible) to output a bistream or RAW signal and see if theres any difference in the noise/hissing?
Like I said on a previous post, i get no hissing or anything when the signal is on bitstream, but pcm is the um, 'hissy' one lol.
dropzone7 10-20-07, 10:09 PM I just watched "Hot Fuzz" and this new receiver and speaker combination just sounded so great. I ran Audysey and while I like certain things about the way it sounds, I'm thinking of manually bumping the levels back up. It put everything at like -10db or -15db and I found that I was turning the volume to about -10 or -12 on the master volume to really be immersed in the movie. Much more tweaking is needed and my surrounds were just sitting on boxes until my mounts arrive Monday. It was nice to actually sit down and watch an entire movie though.
GiantShift 10-20-07, 10:31 PM What does "Dialog Norm:" followed by a number mean on this receivers display? It happens when I watch HD channels on my DirecTV HD DVR I think.
Well, purchased a 705 last night (replacing a 9 year old Yamaha RX-V990). The first thing that concerned me was the size and weight of the receiver, I think it weighs about 30 lbs and is fairly shallow. In an attempt to not judge a book by it's cover, I hooked it up. My impressions; while very feature rich compared to the 9 year old Yamaha, the power of the 705 left much to be desired. The sound quality seemed very flat, but that could be due to the wattage. I felt that the speakers (B&W 603s2) sounded much more alive with my last setup. So I returned the receiver today and purchased an 805.
This isn't to bash the 705 at all, but if anybody is second guessing whether or not this receiver is for them due to the power, it's not for you. The 805 brought the speakers back to life. The sound quality is also greatly increased. A friend of mine has the same receiver hooked up to a set of B&W 804S's and they sound very nice on it. It seems to be quite a versatile receiver (so far ;) )
CitznFish 10-20-07, 11:25 PM Man, I am so confused on how to set up this amp. I have 5.1 speakers and I am not bi-amping. I am trying to go through the speaker set up and if I select Yes to subwoofer, THX 80hz for fronts and center (not that I know what I'm doing mind you..) and then I try to select no for surrounds, the set up then won't let me set up rear surrounds. Why is this? I am totally not understanding any of this and it's making me feel pretty duumb. there is nothing in the manual that goes over this except bi-amping which I am not doing. Do I have to Biamp if I only have 5.1 speaker system?
Additionally when I try the audessey set up it fails consistenly when it detects the rear surround. It says there is no surround (side?) and stops every time. meaning that it does the front left, center, right, sees there is no sound for surround right, does surround back right then fails and says there is a speaker problem with surround right. (Obviously i don't have one!)
is there a set up guide for the clueless?

I'm glad you found that the 805 gave you what you wanted to hear. I think that if you don't match the power requirements of your speakers to your receiver, the results will be disappointing. While most of us in the 705 forum are pleased with their purchase, it's always informative to hear from someone who gave the 705 a chance but rejected it for a valid reason. Enjoy your 805!

Like I said on a previous post, i get no hissing or anything when the signal is on bitstream, but pcm is the um, 'hissy' one lol.
I get no hiss from any setting on my system... perhaps its cause i never go over 70% volume on this receiver. I also tried bistream/pcm no issues.
I'm beginning to be grateful I don't get a lot of noise. Even at 100% volume with no input source.. the hiss i get is very little... the buzz on my sub is so quiet that i needed to walk over and lean in to make sure it was doing anything at all.
I am also starting to think my Audy auto EQ settings are curbing my high pitch hiss a bit... this would also explain why everyone has such variation to how much hiss they get if any.
CitznFish 10-20-07, 11:52 PM where do i plug in my rear speakers for a 5.1 set up? Surround or rear surround?

I just realized my ps3/dvd output was set to 5.1 on pcm while i only have 2 front speakers, im gonna hook up a pair of surrounds pretty quick here and see if that alleviates the problem or not.
On the other hand, dolby digital 5.1 doesn't get any hiss whatsoever, so it's definitely a pcm issue. Hopefully the extra 2 speakers will reduce it to a point where I have to crank it up to 90 (which wont ever happen) to notice.
where do i plug in my rear speakers for a 5.1 set up? Surround or rear surround?

While most of us in the 705 forum are pleased with their purchase, it's always informative to hear from someone who gave the 705 a chance but rejected it for a valid reason. Enjoy your 805!
Thank you for the kind (fair) response, I spent some time reading back through the thread (after I had posted) and noticed how happy everybody seems to be with this receiver. From all of the responses, I am certain that it is in fact a great receiver, it must be a case where I under bought (considering my needs).

yeah, so is calling the 7.1 speakers "rear surround" cause logically the 5.1 surrounds are at the rear(side). I switched them to sl and sr and it now works.

There are no rear surrounds in 5.1. Surrounds go to the sides of your listening position in 5.1, a few feet above your head and slightly behind your listening position (unless you plan on going 7.1 later, in which case keep them directly to the sides - the rear surrounds will draw the soundstage back behind you).

Hans_Gruber 10-21-07, 10:08 AM Hi guys,
Anyone still have no experience / problems with component in -> hdmi out? Mine doesn't really work, the picture deteriorates and is usually completely lost (gray screen) after 10mins max.
I'm now using composite in- > hdmi out. No problems except the terrible loss on picture detail:(
Should I return the receiver or is there a way around it? Hidden menu settings haven't helped.

Hmm... so can someone please confirm that with these receivers, that if your using a 5.1 setup, that the speakers are to go into the Surround Left/Right or the back surround l/r?
*Edit - Found the answer, it is surround L/R if you're using a 5.1 setup. Sorry for the misinformation CitznFish:o

Well, I thought I had just confirmed that in my previous post, but if you really need verification of this, look at page 20 of the manual:
"Surround left and right speakers
These speakers are used for precise sound positioning and to add realistic ambience. Position them at the sides of the listener, or slightly behind, about 2–3 feet (60–100 cm) above ear level. Ideally they should be equidistant from the listener."
"Surround back left and right speakers
These speakers are necessary to enjoy Dolby Digital EX, DTS-ES Matrix, DTS-ES Discrete, THX Surround EX, etc. They enhance the realism of surround sound and improve sound localization behind the listener. Position them behind the listener about 2–3 feet (60– 100 cm) above ear level."

Did not mean to offend. I had actually searched a bit and found more information and edited my post already.

I thought I saw a slight reduction (and I mean slight, still looked good) in PQ when testing with my Xbox with HD Pack (Component In, Display connected via HDMI to the 705).. It's not a big deal to me as I am not using my Xbox much anymore, just HDMI connected devices....
CBT2283 10-21-07, 12:47 PM Hi everybody. I just got this receiver and I've run into something rather odd... when I try to hook up my VCR to the receiver (using S-video for picture and RCA for sound) I get a couple second delay between switching channels on the VCR during which time the screen goes grey and usually displays "weak or no signal" before playing the channel. I have non-digital cable which I run through the SVHS VCR (incase sat goes down). The receiver is connected to the TV via HDMI, so I'm wondering if maybe the receiver is just not good at upconverting the signal or something? Anyone come across this issue before?
By the way, if I connect the S-video cable directly to my TV and leave the RCA cables in place on the receiver for just the sound, channel switching works fine... so this has to be an issue with the receiver. I want to have everything coming in though HDMI though so I never have to change inputs:(
Just got the 705 and love the sound quality, but have noticed when watching directv hd I am getting a lip sync issue with the sound slightly slower than the lips. I notice a a/v sync setup but only see ability to delay sound. Any suggestions will be appreciated.
Hopefully the extra 2 speakers will reduce it to a point where I have to crank it up to 90 (which wont ever happen) to notice.
devilchicken, I responded to your PM and your request..
Interesting enough, when my DVD player is set to PCM (audio via HDMI), I do hear a slight hiss from the Center Channel (even less on the other two fronts) when I have the volume at high levels and my ear is close to the speakers.
.S
Forgot to mention above that I have the direct tv receiver connected to digital in back of receiver with optical wire.
I'll second that emotion, The only time i use THX is when a friend is over and i want some red lights to show up on the face. PLII works well for almost everything.
THX is not just a set of equalizer settings. THX always suggests better amplifier design which is why we need a good receiver anyway. TX-SR705 has been proven to provide 12.5 amperes of peak current for its front channels and 6.2 amperes for its surrounds.
Another important aspect is DSP chip. Three TI (Aureus) 32-Bit DSP Chips for advanced processing ( vs. one in TX-SR605 ) and post-processing.
IMHO the "hiss" we are talking about might not be receiver. Check your sound sources. I have two TOSLINKS and one connected to Vista Premium Media Center produces "hiss" while other connected to Comcast DVR works perfectly fine when I trun the volumn up w/o playing anything. No HISS from my PS3 connected to TX-SR705 via HDMI.
TX-SR705 is a steal at this price point.
I agree, it is a steal at the price I paid for it.
Though the 705's THX certification is for a room up 2000 cubic feet and my room is around 2550++, I'm very impressed with its audio performance in my room (with KEF 2500 series, 5.1 only), I haven't had the need to ever have the volume over 73-75 (absolute) and usually only between 58 and 70.
Question to all:
What max volume level have you ever had the need to use/regular use (and in what size room and speaker setup)?

I don't think it's the source, as I can make mine hiss with both my ps3 and my oppo970 simply by changing the output on them from bitstream to pcm.
On bitstream I can turn it up to 100 and the speakers will be dead silent. Not that I would ever listen to anything at 100 since I'd like my speakers AND ears to last a long time, mind you.
When set to PCM, you will notice the hissing at a volume that you would consider listenable, say 75.
I'm gonna call Onkyo and see what they say about it. Might exchange it for a new one or maybe even look into a Denon, though those are a bit expensive.
And for the record, I love my 705, damn you thread for making me test mine for the hissing, lol. :D
ShmengeTravel 10-21-07, 05:31 PM Uh, ok I have a *really* serious question, as I don't want to do any damage to my new receiver. I had an older (bout a year or so) onkyo HTIAB set, that had a 6.1 speaker set. Now I'm using those same speakers, with the new receiver. The specs for the 705 on the onkyo website state that it can handle 8ohms on each channel, but when I go into the receivers settings it only gives me an option for 4ohms or 6ohms. I don't want to damage my new receiver, as the older speakers are 8ohms a piece, but I bought this planning on using these speakers after reading on onkyos site that it could handle them.
Long story short, on the website it says it can handle 8ohms on each channel, but the receivers menu only gives the option for 4ohms or 6ohms. Can I use my 8ohm speakers or not?
Thanks in advance!
Shmenge
Edit- Follow up to my own question, I see in the manual it states to set the receiver to 4ohms if the impedance of any speaker is 4ohms or more but less than 6. Under that, it says Set the receiver to 6ohms if the impedance of all speakers are between 6 and 16ohms. I think it's ok to use them, but the wording they use makes me question it again. Set to 6ohms if the impedance of all speakers *total* between 6 and 16ohms? Or set to 6ohms if the impedance of *each* speakers are between 6 and 16ohms?

Just set it to 6ohms.
From the owners manual, page 46:
6 ohms: Select if the impedance of all speakers are between 6 and 16 ohms.

Just plugged a brand new subwoofer into the pre-out on my new 705. Got nothing -- no sound, no vibration, not detected during set-up, no test tone during calibration. I'm assuming the sub is the problem (no sound when an ipod was plugged directly into the sub), but I'd like to be sure that the problem isn't with the output on the 705. Is there any way I can check that? Can't think of anything, as I don't have another sub in the house, but maybe there's something else I can do?

...not sure if this is the same as the problem you are having , but sometimes I had to "Retry" (an option after running Audyssey for Position 1) in order for the sub to be recognized. Ii was always recognized after the second attempt, if not the first.

Heuristix 10-21-07, 10:22 PM I just noticed a curious difference between the 705 and 805 manuals with respect to setting speaker levels (comparing page 81 of the 705 manual with page 90 of the 805 manual).
Step 4 is the same in both manuals "Use the Up and Down buttons to select each speaker, and use the Left and Right buttons to set the volume. The volume can be adjusted from –12 to +12 dB (–15 dB to +12 dB for the subwoofer) in 1 dB steps."
Step 5 in both manuals state " Repeat step 4 until the volume of the test tone from each speaker is the same."
However only the 805 manual has this further instruction "If you’re using a handheld sound level meter, adjust the level of each speaker so that it reads 75dB SPL at the listening position, measured with C-weighting and slow reading."
I wonder why this last bit is omitted from the 705 manual. Are 705 owners considered too cheap to own a SPL meter?

Nice lil find there.. I guess the main copywriter of Onkyo's "manual" department was thinking EXACTLY what your said! Especially since the 705 came after the 805 they definitely deliberately deleted it.
You gonna write them a nasty letter scorning them for there condescending lack of information? (kidding of course)
I'm not to mad about this.. its in part true for me.. I wanted the 905 but settled on this.. But i still own an SPL meter anyway. :p

There are two sets of RCAs on the back labeled sub woofer. Pretty close together. Be sure you are in the pre-out for the sub woofer. Very common to mix them up. You can then test by using the test tones in set up level adjustment.

I assume you want audio-only, yes?
If so, get yourself a mini-jack-to-RCA (red/white) adapter cable. Connect the mini-jack to the headphone output of the iPod. Connect the RCAs to an unused analog audio input on your 705. Voila.

As I have found, there are varying opinions on this forum. I personally have found the best results by calibrating the system myself. I say try both and see what you like. To each his own.

The phone input is specifically made for turntables. This input works differently than the other line-level inputs as it applies some kind of equalization and amplification to the input signal to compensate for the low level signal coming from the turntable's needle.

The standard diagnosis is that you have plugged your sub into the wrong jack in the back of the reciever. There is a subwoofer jack in the multi channel input section and about 2 inches to the right there is the subwoofer preout that you want to plug into. this screwed me up for several hours when i first hooked my system up.
Hope this helps you out.
Dgephri 10-22-07, 12:17 PM discovered a funny thing yesterday: you can't assign any other audio input to the Aux source even though you CAN assign a different Video in.
My setup:
Cable Sat is HDMI from Comcast box with Optical SPDIF (their HDMI doesn't pass audio properly).
PS3 is DVD/VCR HDMI in, no SPDIF obviously
Xbox is Game/TV in component, SPDIF in #2
DVD 400 changer is into Componet and SPDIF
I have the Wii plugged into component, selected in Aux, and turned it on to play today and realized there was no audio. RCA stereo plugs were stuck somewhere that didn't make sense, and in the Menu there is a gray out "front" label and doesn't allow me to choose anything.
So, what options do I have besides getting little extenders to hook up to front panel RCA?
Cable/Sat is take, DVD/VCR is taken, Game/TV is taken, and Aux is the only other input with Video right? Or did I miss something in the back panel, in the dark, behind my rack system?

I have to say that i hate how those grindhouse movies are going after that old crappy 70's B-movie quality.

I don't think the fans are supposed to come on when you power the unit on. I thought they only came on once the unit passes a certain temperature. In fact, I've never heard the fans on mine, even standing next to it. I even checked yesterday after watching Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix at like -10 from reference... no fans running. I think your getting the "Howling" noise because its getting close to Halloween, after Halloween it will stop. lol :D. sorry. Just some 705 humor.
I had it set that way before, but I switched it to bitstream. The DTS 'core' track seems to sound better to me that way. Guess ill just watch them all with the PCM track for now.
I have a Panasonic Blu-ray player and am not clear on the best way to get the TrueHD signal to the 705. Is it better to output PCM in 2 channels from the panasonic and use the speaker setup in the Onkyo? Or use the multichannel setup in the Panasonic and then pass the multichannel PCM signal to the receiver? I tried using the 2 channel PCM output and the Onkyo only shows receiving PCM not "multichannel PCM". Any advice from someone with the panny BR on best setup?
Bummer, looks like this receiver is having the same HDMI/PS3 handshake flickering issues as the 674 is having. I haven't seen any posts yet related to the 705 and flicker, but I cannot run my PS3 into this brand new receiver via HDMI as the flicker is unbearable and I am unable to watch video. Running directly through my Mitsu 65833 works perfectly with Optical audio from PS3, however, I too want the HD audio later on as well. Looks like I'll need to call Onkyo and get it serviced. I would have thought they would have addressed this with the 705 and newer receivers.
Anyone else having this problem?
Thanks

I'll check mine again, but they came on immediately now because I didn't let the receiver cool down after I powered it off. The temp in my house is always around 75 degrees but i currently have equipment stacked on top of teh receiver so it's not getting much ventilation fron the top of the receiver.
I have placed wood blocks under the other equpment to get more air flow through the receiver vents. I'll see if that'll help with the fan.

Thanks
Sounds like a problem specific to your unit. I Use my PS3 as my exclusive DVD player now and i have nothing but a flawless picture. It is hooked up via HDMI also.
Got a dumb question. I don't see reference in the manual for inputing an MP3 player. How to do it?
Onkyo also sells a docking station for ipods that plays your track via a fancy lil apple rip-off esque cradle.

If you don't care about the look, charging or using Onkyo remote commands to control the ipod .... just do as the previous poster mentioned (use the stereo miniplug to streto rca plug) that way will be the cheapest route to go.
chipvideo 10-22-07, 04:15 PM I will be using this as a pre amp later this week when it arrives. This is the following gear I will be using.
Sunfire Cinema Grand Signature biamped for ML Monoliths and center for ML cinema
SUnfire Cinema Grand for rear ML Arieus
Velodyne SMS1 Bass Management for 2 Outlaw LFM1+ subs
Lumgen VisionProHDP for scaling
Toshi HDA1
Sammy BDP-1000
Tivo3
Just wanted to know if there is anything I need to do in the receiver setup wise to get the optimal results for my HT.

Same here.
Oriontool 10-22-07, 04:40 PM Hello All,
Extremely great forum! I am new to Onkyo. I've always had Sony and for the most part been happy. Well last week I decided it was time to upgrade so I bought a 705 from CC. I got it all hooked up and when it works, it sounds great! Keyword being WHEN. I have my Dishnetwork receiver DVR622 hooked up via HDMI in to HDMI 1. I have my Xbox 360 hooked up via HDMI in to HDMI 2. And my DVD player via HDMI in to HDMI 3. If I turn the 705 off, and then come back say a few hours later, there is video but no audio from HDMI 1. In order to get the 705 to produce sound from the DVR, I literally have to unplug the HDMI cable out of HDMI 1 and reinsert it. Then the 705 picks up the signal and I have sound, until I turn off the unit. Otherwise, I just get video with no audio and the HDMI word flashes on the 705 screen. I've called and left VM's for Onkyo tech support as well as two emails. I've received no response.
IMO, I am thinking it has something to do with the HDMI switching, but not sure.
I am wondering if I would be better suited with the Sony STR-DG910. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated!

Hmm. Well then I'm stumped. Any ideas on this one? I wonder if there are multiple versions of the 705 out there. What firmware are you running on your PS3? I'm definitely unable to run HDMI from PS3 to Onkyo and then out to TV from there.
Thanks

Mine works fine with my VIP622 hooked up to HDMI2. I doubt the HDMI input would make a difference. Could be a bad cable or maybe the HDMI connection on the 622 is flakey.... they are known to have problems with HDMI plug. There also seems to be a few poeple that are having some 622 HDMI problems due to the latest Dish software upgrades.

ThanksCan you operate anything else without problems using the exact same HDMI cable (to rule out conflict issues with that cable).

I thought it could be the 622 connection, so I disconnected the cable from the 622 and reinserted, yet no luck. I must remove the cable from the 705 and reinsert it.

I had almost the exact same problem with my Comcast (cable) Motorola DVR using HDMI, but I had this problem before I even got the 705 (i.e., the 705 was definitely not the culprit). I found out the STB/DVR needed a firmware fix.

Frequent reports of poor Onkyo CS really bothers me. :( Give the emails a few days - I did finally get an email response to my inquiry. Their solution for my particular problem was to return the unit.

I had the 622 DVR plugged directly in to my TV for about a year and have never had an issue. Do yo think it has to do with the relationship from the DVR to the 705?

In your opinion, does the Onkyo units beat out the Sony units in the comparable price range? I ask incase there is an issue I cannot resolve.

It's possible, but you might also try switching your HDMI inputs (2 and/or 3) to rule out a bad HDMI-1 port on the 705.

I have no experience with Sony receivers, sorry.

My opinion of Sony "audio" equipment is stay away from everything thats not part of there "ES" line. They take less shortcuts on the internal components (which make it better sounding with less noise) and I tend to think their manufacturing standards are better on their ES line. I still have a few pieces of Sony ES equipment in my studio after owning it for a good 10 years+... the stuff tends to hold together a long time.
This page is out of date but this is their equipment under the "ES" line.

This link below looks like the only current generation ES receiver I can find. Looks nice.

Very pricey this is more on par with the Onkyo 905...
6 hdmi in, 1080p upscaling, 120 watts x 7
You couldn't find (even back in the day) a SONY ES receiver for the price we got from Onkyo for this 705.. which is why I personally bought into Onkyo myself. I only buy sony audio gear if its ES and only get Sony if TV's if they are XBR or better. I have tried to many mid to low end commercially available lines from Sony and they all break within 1-2 years (I have had endless bad luck with there consumer priced brands).. on the opposite side of that coin, I have had endless long lasting good luck with there higher quality lines. Which basically has made me look at sony in that mindset. Great products as long as you are willing to spend endless amounts for their best for the best product lines. Even then, for the price, you could easily own top quality with nearly any manufacturer.
The quality of the 705 is very good compared to the price with all the features it has. I don't feel like I got the generic cut down version of those features either. Onkyo always was an offbeat but higher quality alternative to bigger brands like Sony's consumer priced product lines. Along the way on the road to brands like Denon and Marantz... and all the elite audiophile grade gear.. that compete or surpass the best most expensive Sony product lines.
PS: Its been a long time but back in college I bought a Sony consumer line receiver was around 300-400 bucks if I recall. (5.1 surround only back then) That thing hissed like crazy. I hated the quality of it.
PPS: I am ashamed to admit it but I have long been a Sony fan boy. Typically not for the quality of their products but the name and the exterior design of there hardware. As I am gettin older I am not so much the Sony fanboy I once was.. but still I dropped plenty of coin on an XBR bravia lcd.. when I could have bought a bigger screen equally as good for waaaaaaaay less. I did it.. for the fanboy reasons :D So please don't think I am bad mouthing Sony... I just avoid there cheapy priced consumer grade stuff like the plague.. in my experience it performs poorly or breaks too easy.
CitznFish 10-22-07, 06:15 PM I'll check mine again, but they came on immediately now because I didn't let the receiver cool down after I powered it off. The temp in my house is always around 75 degrees but i currently have equipment stacked on top of teh receiver so it's not getting much ventilation fron the top of the receiver.
I have placed wood blocks under the other equpment to get more air flow through the receiver vents. I'll see if that'll help with the fan.
currently the noise has stopped, but I am now positive it's the fan
FWIW I put some wood blocks inbetween the receiver and the HD DVD player that sat on top of it and the howling has not come back... *phew*

I will try using another cable just to rule that out. I will also try a different HDMI input on the 705.

I was asking about PS3 Firmware, not 705 firmware.
Oriontool 10-22-07, 07:39 PM Bought a new cable. Gonna give it a try tonight and try to swap the HDMI ports. Also I am going to look for a firmware update on the Dish 622.
Will post later what I find...

I'm strating to wonder if this might be an HDMI cable issue. I'm using a couple cheap GE HDMI cables that I bought from Target. Is it possible that these cables are not 1.3 compatible, and/or does that matter? I don't have any problems with my SA 8300 DVR connected via HDMI to the Onkyo 705 and I'm using a different cable. I think it's a phillips cable.
Uptown193 10-22-07, 08:24 PM Can someone tell me or does anyone here have Direct tv HDDVR and if so how is the PQ compared to Timer Warner SA8300 HDDVR and how is the hook up with the 705, im curious of switching from TW to DTV?? thanks.
garypen 10-22-07, 09:33 PM Here's something that kinda sucks. When I play a CD on my HDDVD player or DVD recorder, which is connected to the 705 via HDMI, it won't play audio, or will play it intermittantly, unless I power up the projector that is connected to the 705's HDMI output.
Yeah. It kinda sucks. I guess I will hafta connect an optical from one of the DVD devices, and assign it to the CD function. Talk about stupid.

Yep...I griped about this last week. DRM (and, by extension, HDMI) sucks.

You can not update the software in the 622. Dish has to push it out to you. Most users have version 445 but 446 is just being pushed out to users.
