mrgribbles 08-16-07, 08:48 AM I re-measured the temps my 705 last night and there was little change. Hot spot was 136 F in the top right rear quadrant. However, this time I took some readings before I took it out standby and with a room ambient of 81 F the Onk was 90 at its warmest spot and 86 pretty much all over. On stanby, a few degrees over ambient is nuttin.
One tip: If you have any of the HDMI controls set to ON in the HARDWARE - HDMI setup menu then your 705 will run much hotter during standby. Even though its tempting to turn on "Lip Synch" and TV control, they probably won't work for you and you'll just be burning coal and creating heat. Turn 'em off.
You're right on target. I feel that there's two reasons companies have a CS group. A) Help the customer, build relationships, etc. or B) keep these a**holes off my back. Office Space!! I should have likened them to Michael Scott in "The Office." ROFLMAO at my own joke.
After I get this set up properly I REALLY hope it turns it to be a great receiver. Because based solely on my dealings with their customer service, I would never buy an Onkyo again.
I still don't have a new remote and worse "Ray" (from the parts dept?) won't even confirm that he received my fax. I am not happy.
Michael Scott would be a pleasure to work with compared to these guys!
mrgribbles 08-16-07, 11:01 AM Hey dolfer, I'm sorry you're having a tough time with this group, not unexpected , but unfortunate nonetheless.
mrgribbles 08-16-07, 11:02 AM I gotta tell you, I think this 705 is rising to the top as the value/feature/trouble free leader in the new Onk lineup.
First; Price. Even with a good deal at the under $700 mark, excellent value. If you can score it at the sub $500 mark like some of us fortunates, unfrigginbelieveable value.
Second: Nary a single issue that plagues other models is apparent in my 705. No snaps, crackles or pops. After I tuned in audio delay @ 30 ms, so far, no lip synch issue with me. No handshake or passthrough issues. I'm not frying eggs on it. No 4:3 unwanted stretch issues. (Apologies to the 875/905 guys, I'd take the reon for a bit of stretch)
Third: I think the sound is excellent. I hate to say it, but better than my 605 and I thought that sounded pretty AOK. It could be my imagination but I think Dr Faroudja is doing his job in this one. I think the processed PQ is better than in my 605, but then again, I had the 605 masterfully tweaked, so no wonder the unadulterated 705 looks better.
Fourth: The triple DSP and all the post process modes alone made the step up to the 705 sweet. Sweet indeed.
Fifth: THX - Believe in it or not (I happen to), if nothing else, the THX process modes are worth it.
Sixth: It has features that some of the bigger boys don't (at least per the manual), and so many, many more features than the 605 has. For example: We have more LFE channel level modes than the 805/875 (DD THD & DTS HD MA are added), the 705 is the only video processor that advertises "time base correction." Of course its conceivable that they all have it but we're the only model that references it.
Seventh: Supah remote control. Fully functioned and learning too.
Eighth: It has 2 very quiet fans on the bottom.
Take the feature set, 3 DSPs, 8 channel pre-outs, THX, HDMI 1.3, lossless codec support, Audyssey Multi-EQ, learning remote, etc, look at the lack or problems and then look at a sub $500 price, its the king. BTW, Happy Birthday wishes to the real KING. I'm sure he'll read this.
Gloat over, resuming my "Office Space" duties. Anyone seen my red stapler.
Hey dolfer, I'm sorry you're having a tough time with this group, not unexpected , but unfortunate nonetheless.
I might have to print a retraction! I finally received a confirmation after re-faxing everything once again. So Ray appears to be off the hook although I would have appreciated a brief email to confirm everything was ok. Nonetheless, good job Ray. Thanks for getting me a new remote. :D
Apparently my replacement has been shipped.
Thanks,
Dolf
captive 08-16-07, 11:21 AM Fifth: THX - Believe in it or not (I happen to), if nothing else, the THX process modes are worth it.
Yes, I love Neural THX 7.1.
I actually found the presets last night where you can tell it what audio mode to process from each input depending on what type signal its sending.
Artslinger 08-16-07, 11:33 AM I gotta tell you, I think this 705 is rising to the top as the value/feature/trouble free leader in the new Onk lineup.
I agree 100%.
I'd add one more to the list. The 705s remote is great. I have everything programmed, it took about 15-20 minutes and works perfect, the learning function is a added bonus. The only minor annoyance is the center toggle button is a pain to push correctly with my thumb.

Wow these are great points for buying the 705 mrgribbles you need to make a copy and frame this analysis. It is really helpful I am glad that you are always here
on this thread.

805 was oven hot on standby! Is 705 same way
rishi76 08-16-07, 12:31 PM Thanks mrgibbles!
Ever since the anticipation thread was started a few months back, I knew I wanted at least the 605. But when I realized it won't matrix the 5.1 PCM sources, I quickly moved on to the 705. I prayed HARD that the 705 would be able to do it, and it was confirmed only a little while back when the manual was finally released. Add the 3rd HDMI, and almost everything the 805 has but the Burr Brown DACs and the heavy weight and the much larger footprint, I was convinced the 705 was a match made in heaven for me!
And its GREAT to know we havent seen a single complaint of popping on this so far. And the CC deal made this absolutely irresistible. Hardly $90 more than the 674 I bought to tide me over in the meantime and it has 7.1 preouts to boot!
Can't wait to set mine up tonight and test it out! Have the Matrix HD-DVDs in the queue at Blockbuster to give this beast a jog :)
Thanks mrgibbles!

maynerd 08-16-07, 12:53 PM Hi guys I'm looking at this receiver vs a Sony STR-DG910. It's about double the price of the Sony so I'm really leaning toward the Sony. Is there a reason why this receiver is worth shelling out $300-400 more for this unit vs the Sony?

The Faroudja chip in the 705 is only for deinterlacing 480i and 1080i right? There should be no difference in 480p/720p/1080p content correct?

Like me I was leaning toward to the 605 but when I also found out it won't matrix to 7.1 it made think if I really want the 605 I was convinced to get 605 but then I saw this thread I think 705 is what I need and waiting for a better deal is killing I can't wait to hook up my HD a2 and Panny 10ak.

That is a lot of money.....me I based my decision to get the 705 because it fit well
for my needs/set up I have the following to connect to 705: Dont know anything with STR-DG910 but maybe first thing I would do is check what fit your needs. GOODLUCK.
5.1 SAT SPEAKERS (polk audio rm7500) ( will buy two more to be 7.1 set up)
HD A2
PANNY BD10AK
COMCAST DIGITAL CABLE
MITS hd1000u
and my hometheater dimension is average only. (13 ft wide and 25 ft long)
Goodluck,
Peter
I have owned my 705 since tuesday and outside of hdmi pass through I have yet to see this thing in action. I am waiting for speaker cables and more hdmi cables to show up from monoprice.com they are coming by friday (probably night time)
I even mounted these new KEF 3005 speakers on my wall while i was waiting for the cables to arrive... I cant take it anymore :( I wanna listen to it!

I've had issues with previous receivers, wanted to know the story with the 705.

Here's what I'm going to hook up to it.
Tivo S3 (HDMI - 720p)
PS3 (HDMI - passing 1080p/24f)
Xbox 360 Elite (HDMI - 720p)
Nintendo Wii (Component)
All going out via HDMI to my TV Pioneer PDP-5080HD
I am not currently using my rear speakers or my sub as I am in an apartment. The I am using two front speakers and a center channel all are Energy small sized speakers.
Does this help? :)
timfitz99 08-16-07, 01:53 PM This may be a noob question, but the only thing I noticed that I don't like about the 705 so far is that when I'm matrixing 7.1 sound, my max volume is much quieter. Too quiet, in many cases.
This varies a bit depending on the source, and I understand that I'm splitting the power over two more speakers, but still...
I was playing a DTS-ES DVD the other day, running straight 6.1, and it was plenty loud enough at a reasonable setting. Add one more speaker, and it drops to a listenable volume, but not one that's loud enough for some movies.
Any ideas? Is my setup wrong, or is there just not enough power?

I have a four year old Sammy DLP that I am using the HDMI/DVI adapter cable and I am having no problems at all. What problems were you having with other receivers?

Sweet...But if you are not using your rear and sub channels maybe 705 is not the one to choose, But if you like try 705 get it where they have a good return policy in case you feel like getting the sony.

If you have a sound meter. It would be interesting to run some tests. Play a track @ 5.1, use DD PLII, measure @ the sweet spot. Turn on the rears via matrix, use DD PLIIx and remeasure. I'll do it myself when I get a moment. Good question. Worthy of some science.
There are some tracks wherein I too detect some level differences but I've been discounting it as expected/normal. What you brought up could be evidence of the AVR weakening because of power drain. I'm intrigued.

What kind of speakers and what is their wattage?
How high is your master volume before you matrix and after as well?
Also, what decibel level are your speakers at,and at what ohm setting?

I am using hdmi out at 1080 p... no problems at all with video displaying at all. Its reason I waited for these series of Onkyos to touch down... nice combo of 1080p pass through, price and True HD decoding.
Audio passes through fine too.

Why won't lip sync feature most likely not work? I can almost swear I zero lip sync issues since I flipped that option on.
What I do not understand about that is I thought the lip sync issues were part of the 1.3 hdmi fix and my tv is 1.2... so it would be downgraded to 1.2 on the connection. Does anyone know how this lip sync (on/off) function is working? Will it work on an hdmi 1.2 tv?
warlord260 08-16-07, 04:21 PM rutlian,i am glad to see your liking your 705. may i ask where u got it? appears we are neibors,im just down the road in kent off benson.
mommacux 08-16-07, 04:26 PM Can the 705 upconvert a 1080i signal from an HD-DVR to 1080p via HDMI?
Tom
The Faroudja chip in the 705 is only for deinterlacing 480i and 1080i right? There should be no difference in 480p/720p/1080p content correct?
Anyone know the answer to this? I am curious too.
Can the 705 upconvert a 1080i signal from an HD-DVR to 1080p via HDMI?
Tom
Its just hdmi pass through capable of passing through up to 1080p if source is 1080p it will pass 1080p ... if source is 1080i it will pass 1080i.
The only thing this receiver can up-convert is analog signals through the hdmi up to a maximum of 720p.
However, the 905 model can up-convert sources to 1080p over its hdmi. At 3 times the costs of the 705 its hard to be sold on it if thats the sole feature your buying it for.
egcarter 08-16-07, 04:38 PM Can the 705 upconvert a 1080i signal from an HD-DVR to 1080p via HDMI?
Tom
No.
The 705 has a Faroudja video processor. It will convert analog video to either 480p or 720p. That's it. It will pass through digital video at any res up to 1080p via HDMI.
If you want that capability, you need to go up to the 875 or 905.

Sorry I don't have it yet, But I've been to circuit city/ no stock, frys electronics they have it on silver only, as yesterday they have 2 units left but the salesclerk said they would do pricematch, video only store (they can pricematch also they have it black but right now I like to get it online via Circuit City just hoping the price will go down a bit more. Don't like videoonly's return policy its funny I said that because I bought my handycam, my plasma sony and other stuff with them. But if I don't get a better price this week with circuit city I might just get it from videoonly.
Sorry If I sounds like I owned one already I am just to excited with this unit, I almost got the 605 from circuit city but decided that the 705 will fit into my setup.
GOODLUCK.
Willland 08-16-07, 05:32 PM I just bought my Onkyo TX-SR705 @ CC on Sunday. Woke early and found the crazy price of $549.99 again online and picked mine up at noon. Inventory system was down. Had to send someone to storeroom to verify any in stock. Took it home and read a good portion of manual. Flipped receiver over and noticed (2) coolant fans on bottom and was pleasantly surprised. Contacted OnkyoUSA to verify my findings---correct. Simple to set up,great sound, great picture. No problems so far to speak of. Read manual cover to cover. Too many features to experiment with in the four days I have owned it. Out of town now and having withdrawals for sound.
Jeremy Anderson 08-16-07, 06:01 PM Wait, there are fans in the 705? Wow. I didn't even notice that.
After spending some more time with it last night, I have noticed that my left surround doesn't quite mesh with the other speakers. Not sure if it's a delay problem or equalization, because the levels are correct... but it definitely sounds like the left surround isn't matching up with sounds placed in-between channels (i.e. sidewall imaging). I may re-run the auto-cal this weekend when I can do a little better mic placement.
Still, the 705 is a vast improvement over my 603. Shame I didn't get it for the el cheapo price some of you did - I ended up at $735 after tax. Could've gotten $50 cheaper online, but I'm an instant gratification kinda' guy. But if CC drops to a crazy price again soon, can't I go there and get them to refund the difference?

I think you can.
Does anyone know if the 705 has a "hidden menu" like the 805? and do you access it the same way as the 805? such as:
"Based on previous posts in this thread, to access the hidden menu: press & hold AUX on the AVR and push the power/standby button concurrently on the 805"Yes it does; and it is the same access. I believe it's the same menu as the 605; I'm not sure if it's the same as 805. It includes forcing trascoded output via HDMI to 720p; some other video options (default contrast, brightness, etc), and I forget what else.
I have about 1 inch of clearance above my receiver only. I notice the heat is gettin intense. Perhaps no more intense then everyone else. I setup a lil usb fan (branched off the xbox 360) for now to keep it cool.. i tried pulling air out of the back but it wasnt helping so im blowing fan over the top of it from the back to the front and that seems to be helping. I'd prefer not to do this cause It blows dust and receiver odor all in my face where I am sitting.
Should I be worried about this heat? If so anyone know a nice lil AC fan I can plug into the back of this receiver.. cause doing this xbox 360 usb fan thing is a lil more maintenance then I want to do every time I start the receiver up.
Utahred1981 08-16-07, 06:52 PM I have a four year old Sammy DLP that I am using the HDMI/DVI adapter cable and I am having no problems at all. What problems were you having with other receivers?
The S*** receiver I recently purchased has a quirk if you use an HDMI/DVI adapter or cable the audio signal would not be passed to the receiver if I used an HDMI cable for audio. I told the receiver to not pass audio to the tv because I know DVI was for video only. If I turned off the tv or unplugged the hdmi cable from the back of the tv the audio would be passed to my receiver.
Thats funky huh? :)
Jeremy Anderson 08-16-07, 07:48 PM This is kind of an off-the-wall question... but does anyone have any kind of link/info on the THX Neural Surround mode and how it actually works? I'm just curious as to how it differs from DPL-IIx or Neo:6 processing when converting 5.1 to 6.1/7.1 (or for that matter stereo). Did a search here, but I didn't find anything that really gave much info.

I wouldn't use the Xbox 360 USB port to power a fan. It could damage your X360.

1 Inch is not enough space clearance, Onkyo recommends 8".
I'd be worried about over heating the unit with that setup.
mrgribbles 08-16-07, 08:27 PM Unbelieveafrigginable, there are 2 fans on the underside of the 705. Holy moving air Batman. Anyone have a 705 without them. No wonder they "reworked" my 705 and why they were so long to release them. I just checked my 605 and no fans on that one. Sorry for the pun but, Kewel.
Willand, Jeremy Anderson and Artslinger, youse guys are up for the "Hero of the Soviet Union" and the "Order of Lenin" medals. Sorry its the best I can do. To quote Dickens, "and God bless us everyone."
Tim Sly 08-16-07, 09:11 PM Take the feature set, 3 DSPs, 8 channel pre-outs, THX, HDMI 1.3, lossless codec support, Audyssey Multi-EQ, learning remote, etc, look at the lack or problems and then look at a sub $500 price, its the king. BTW, Happy Birthday wishes to the real KING. I'm sure he'll read this.
Let's not make is sound like $500 is the going rate now. It will make the majority feel cheated if they are paying $700. Most readers here can't take advantage of that unbelievable price with instant 4 hours price reductions that only a few ever see at CC, multiple coupons, AA reductions, etc, etc.
Some are getting it for $674 and some for $730 after tax and shipping. The current going rate is more like $700 and I think that is still a great deal!
Tim Sly 08-16-07, 09:20 PM The Faroudja chip in the 705 is only for deinterlacing 480i and 1080i right? There should be no difference in 480p/720p/1080p content correct?
This brings up a good point. In the Onkyo Anticipation thread everyone was talking about the REON chip and how great it is and how you gotta wait for the higher models and pay $700-1000 more so you could get superior video.
After I got the 705 all hooked up I found out I wasn't even using its video processing at all! Glad I didn't spend the extra money. I have my HD satellite and my HD-DVD player hooked through HDMI so no video processing. My Polaroid DVD recorder wouldn't handshake through the 705 with my Z3 projector so I just run component video direct from recorder to projector. I am just using the great sound of the 705 and the HDMI passthrough- very nice. I watch standard DVDs through the HD-A2 so it does the video processing. Why would you even need a REON chip in this baby?
Tim Sly 08-16-07, 10:41 PM IMPRESSION:
WOW. Letters from Iwo Jima sounds awesome such as when the planes fly over and drop bombs, machine guns everywhere... :)
As I don't have Sahara yet. I really like LFIJ. You don't hear mouch about it on these forums. The PQ is out standing but it's not in the top tier?
A little off topic but I agree... Letters From Iwo Jima should be in the top Tier! The picture and sound is unreal! This is how to show off HD and your new 705!
I have only watched part of the movie but was more impressed than anything I have seen so far. This site gave it an awesome review: http://hddvd.highdefdigest.com/lettersfromiwojima.html
warlord260 08-16-07, 11:50 PM rutlian, i got my 705 on 8/3 from video only. i was on my last day to return popping 605 at cc. preordered 705 at just over 600. i am totally happy with it am kind of glad i did get bad 605,because 705 so much better. thx surround modes rock. you should be completely happy with a 705. right now im just waiting for saltdoc to test drive his new ascends. so i have one more reason to upgrade.
warlord260 08-16-07, 11:54 PM saltdoc, im waiting to see how your ascends sound on 705. dont forget to let us know. full report please. happy for you.
binister 08-17-07, 12:22 AM Well I hate to say it but I think I have the audio sync issue others have reported with the 805 and up. I was watching a DVD (I Think I Love My Wife) and the audio was lagging behind the video by about a 250ms. I jumped into the setup menu and dropped the Audio Sync down to 0ms but it is still slightly noticeable. I was doing an A/B test between DVD->TV via RCA and DVD->705->TV via S-Video and Component. I was down mixing the 5.1 into Stereo so maybe it takes slightly longer to do so?
I then turned on my cable TV on the SD version of The Office and the lag was gone.
FWIW, I haven't done any Audessy setup and I am running everything in stereo mode (2.1).
Anyone else see the issue?

I envy you man,
I wouldn't use the Xbox 360 USB port to power a fan. It could damage your X360.
I been using that fan type for close to a year now on my xbox 360 and it never died yet, its actually part of what I attribute to its long life when so many friends had theirs burn out already. I loved it so much I went back and bought 2 more 1 for the laptop 1 for the PS3. I am using that laptop spare on my receiver now.
http://www.amazon.com/Thermaltake-Technology-Mobile-External-Cooling/dp/B00080G0BK
You just are remembering all those burnt out 360's from that rear mounted fan block they sold called inner cooler. That was not usb powered it was AC powered and had a faulty coupling to the rear AC power conduit on the 360 and fried machines. This is a lot more tame.. and equally effective.
On xbox 360 the usb port stays on when the machine is off.. so you need to manually plug and unplug it when you want to use or finish with it. So this is not ideal for my receiver.
PS: I lifted up the platform 2 more inches inside my entertainment console to give the receiver more breathing room. So I have about 3 inches in there now above the receiver. This seems like it is helping a lot.

mrgribbles 08-17-07, 07:26 AM Why won't lip sync feature most likely not work? I can almost swear I zero lip sync issues since I flipped that option on.
What I do not understand about that is I thought the lip sync issues were part of the 1.3 hdmi fix and my tv is 1.2... so it would be downgraded to 1.2 on the connection. Does anyone know how this lip sync (on/off) function is working? Will it work on an hdmi 1.2 tv?
Hi woots. Yes, auto lip sync is part of HDMI 1.3. In order to take advantage of it, both components need to be HDMI 1.3 and your TV specifically has to be able to implement it. So for 99% of us, its a no-show. Next years TV lineups should have a lot more 1.3 TVs and auto lip sync. In the meantime, your 705 allows you to adjust audio per input so you can set the delay separately for your DVD and STB, etc. Sorry, you won't be able to set it for individual STB channels which is where much of this issue is found.
mrgribbles 08-17-07, 07:38 AM Wait, there are fans in the 705?
Yes, CC has a 30 day policy on price adjustment.
On your speaker, check the wiring to be sure you're not out of phase. Thats sure what it sounds like. Easy to do, done it meself. If you are out, Audyssey should have picked it up??

Keeping electronics cool is never a bad idea. TBS, I don't think these AVRs are excessively hot. I've done some measurements and the highest I've read with my IR meter is 136 F. My notebook is hotter than that. For a point of reference if you can keep your hand on the hot spot but its rather uncomfortable, you're around 130 F. Onkyo has said that these puppies can go up to 80 F over ambient. Thats cooking. I've had power amps that were way hotter than my 705. If you provide your components with additional cooling, you're only doing yourself a favor.
timfitz99 08-17-07, 07:49 AM What kind of speakers and what is their wattage?
How high is your master volume before you matrix and after as well?
Also, what decibel level are your speakers at,and at what ohm setting?
Tom
My main 5 speakers are Polk Audio, the two rear speakers are Renaissance in-walls. I'll find out the voltage.
Good questions, I'll find out and post back. Thanks for the reply!
timfitz99 08-17-07, 07:53 AM 1 Inch is not enough space clearance, Onkyo recommends 8".
I'd be worried about over heating the unit with that setup.
Wow, 8"?!? I'm going to have to add a shelf! I've got a PS3 sitting about 2" over it, and it seemed to be running cool enough.
I've studied the 705 user manual but can't determine the answer to several questions I have about its operation.
1. Although there are plenty of input connections on the back, it appears that only nine inputs, including phono, aux, and the internal tuner, can be selected for playback. Is it possible to double up on them in order to connect more components? For example, can a DVD player with digital or HDMI outputs be connected to the phono, vcr, aux, or tuner inputs and share these inputs with the analog components already assigned to these inputs?
2. There appear to be even fewer external components that can be controlled by the remote. There are only five remote modes available or possibly six if you count the dock remote mode. Is it possible to assign a component's remote code to the dock remote mode button or to use the learning function in this mode? Is it possible to use one remote mode button between two components that don't have common functions? By this I mean inputting the remote code for a TV on the TV remote mode button and then teaching this button the transport function codes from a CD player since the play, forward, reverse, etc. buttons would not be used by the TV.
3. Page 60 of the user manual states "While the multichannel DVD input is selected, the
Speaker Configuration settings on page 77 are ignored". Does this mean that speaker distances, channel levels, bass management, etc. that are common for all the other inputs do not apply to the multichannel input? Can the individual speaker levels be adjusted during playback in the multichannel input mode? Does the double bass setting work with the multichannel input?
mrgribbles 08-17-07, 08:03 AM This brings up a good point. In the Onkyo Anticipation thread everyone was talking about the REON chip and how great it is and how you gotta wait for the higher models and pay $700-1000 more so you could get superior video.

The Reon implementation in my Tosh XA2 provides stellar SD DVD transfer. Based on that experience, I would like the Reon in the AVR if it substantially improved SD broadcast material and for de-interlacing 1080i HD broadcast material. The Reon does a great job in motion adaptive interlacing, possibly better than my TV (and my TVs not too shabby at this) so on 1080i material it should be an incremental step up.
What I've read is that many of the 875/905 users report a PQ increase on SD material. Some say a great deal, others see a more modest improvement. I'd love to have it, but don't need it.

When using MCH analog, you can adjust individual speaker levels and SubWoofer sensitivity. Thats pretty much it. You'll have to rely on your source to provide bass management, distances, etc. I'm fortunate in that both my disk players have MCH analog outs and reasonably sophisticated speaker config tools. I like MCH analog.

It looks like you know more about the 'issue' than I do. I just remember the cooler incident that you mentioned and wanted to send a warning flare out. But it seems it's not an issue. Very cool. Thanks for correcting my understanding.
Hardware Setting>HDMI: Question :)
I know the xvYCC on/off is the HDMI 1.3 "Deep Color" feature.. which clearly my TV does not have. So here is the question....
Can anyone tell me.. why when I turn the feature on the picture looks smoother.. and when i turn it off.. it gets grainier and more pixelated?
Infact I notice when i plug my HDMI components directly into my TV things are not grainy or pixelated. However, when I use the HDMI pass through on the Onkyo I DO get a little grainy/pixelation going on. The xvYCC seems to correct this and bring it back to normal looking.
Very odd!
PS: This grainy/pixelated look I am speaking about is VERY VERY slight, not intense. It usually shows up around very small text, like HD channel BUGS (the little graphic at bottom right corner of the screen) and sports scores or tickers on ESPN and such.
I was planning to use the zone 2 output to connect my turntable to the input of my Fosgate SQ decoder and connect the SQ decoder's output to the multichannel input in order to properly play back the 300 or so SQ records that I own. Therefore I wanted the 705 to handle speaker distances, bass management, etc. I wonder how difficult it would be to include SQ decoding as one of the DSP modes in a receiver?
Gary Bechtold 08-17-07, 11:49 AM Does the 705 have an issue with motion judder and comcast/motorola 3412 cable box like Lushmojo has with his TX-SR875 receiver?

http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?p=11330609&&#post11330609
I have a comcast/motorola 3416 HD DVR and I am also running 1080i and 1080p sources through the 705. I have not seen any motion judder (3:2 pulldown) issues to speak of yet.
The only things I am noticing are perhaps very slight pixelization around edges of some objects on the screen. These are very small and at a distance hardly noticeable. I have yet to track down if this is the receiver, my equipment or cables.
PS:
I just noticed that guy has nearly an identical TV as me. I have a Sony 52" Bravia XBR3 he has the 46 xbr2 which is basically identical in almost every way that matters for an issue like this. Our cable boxes are near identical as well. I think its that receiver version he has.
timfitz99 08-17-07, 12:23 PM Is this in a open rack? If so you may be okay, still though 2" is not much most of the heat radiates through the top of the 705.
My media room has two open built-in wall niches, one to either side of the screen. They're wide enough for your average component (the 705 fits fine with around 2" on either side and 9" behind it). Each niche is about 2' high. There are no shelves, so in the past I've stacked things (usually the DVD player and never-used Vcr) on top of the receiver.
Before I got the 705, I had a Yamaha RXV-2500 (currently on Craigslist) in there, and it ran hot too, but not as much as the 705 seems to.
I keep my Dish DVR and Xbox 360 on the rack under the TV (the VCR now lives there, too) since they also run rather hot.
When I get one of the Toshiba HD players, I was going to put that on top of the 705, the PS3 on top of that.
I guess if I put in a shelf it would be better, then the Toshiba and PS3 would be much higher. For now, though, I'll stand the PS3 on end it should be ok.
freundez 08-18-07, 12:02 AM This is my very first post on this forum, so thanks in advance for all the great information I've pulled off this site over the past few weeks. I just got my 705 and am having no luck getting the powered Zone 2 output to work at all. Has anyone else experienced this problem. I turned the 'powered zone 2' to active through the OSD, and verified that it isn't a speaker or wiring issue. Will call Crutchfield where I bought it from in the morning, but figured I'd check with some of you first.
Thanks
captive 08-18-07, 02:04 AM Who buys a cooler for the PS3, it cools it self with its ginormous fan. The entire back of the motherboard is a heatsink with a fan thats almost the length of the ps3 in diameter.

If im not mistaken the powered zone 2 only works if you arent using 7.1. I could be wrong but i think i read that somewhere on here.
warlord260 08-18-07, 02:31 AM ive had my 705 since 8\3. have had a lot of time to play with it. properly set-up this thing is amazing. watched "u-571" i thought i was in submarine. perfect test for ht set-up. if you feel the terror of being depth-charged, and think your going to die, you probably are set about right. not a lot said in this forum about referance material for ht. i would assume most are getting 705 for ht. just like anything else something that is properly tuned, is quite different from something that is not. i guess thats why we read these forums.
any circuit city insiders, re exceptional sale again?
insiders? just check the website . its still the same crappy high price and 10% off runs out today
smacksaw 08-18-07, 05:17 AM Right now I have the mini tuner for XM hooked up and it shows on the receiver's display.
Can I make it output on the TV? Right now it's going through HDMI, 1080p.
Other than that it's a pretty good unit. I paired it with the HT540 7.1 speaker kit from Vann's. I didn't really intend to just keep it in the Onkyo family, it was just a good deal on the entire set.
elmer1024 08-18-07, 05:56 PM Hi just received my reciever from CC on friday for the price of $550.00 and 6 dallar shipping , not bad. Does any one know when you set your speakers it asks for what ohm speakers you have? It gives you only a choice of 4 or 6 ? My speakers arr JM lab focal and in the front chorus line and monitor audio SFx in the rear and they all are 8 ohm.
Any ideas on they set up there would be great or any issues ?
Also is there a way to use your HDTV speakers with going to the receiver? This for my wife cause she is not good with remotes
Thanks
Mike
Can we connect bananas plug in the 875 speaker post ?
rishi76 08-18-07, 06:19 PM OK, so finally I got to setup and test the 705 last night. As compared to the 674 I had before this - AWESOME! Apart from all the features etc, with the 674 I always thought the center channel dialog could be better. I boosted the center channel level but never got the effect I wanted. But with the 705, its finally just like I want - loud and crystal clear. And the THX Neo mode is just awesome! Sounds so much better than Dolby EX etc. Amazing separation and clarity of sound, and I am hearing things with this I didnt hear with the 674 - which is saying a lot as I loved the 674 too! So for anyone debating between these two units, I am very happy with the upgrade.
One weird thing though - I have my DVD and HD-DVD connected using HDMI, and the TiVo through S-Video. I want my DVD and HD-DVD to go to the TV through HDMI and the TiVo through component video. Is this possible??? It seems if I set the HDMI Monitor to Yes, it sends all output through HDMI only, and if I set it to No, then it disables the HDMI output completely and I don't get the DVD and HD DVD picture on my TV. Especially weird because the 674 did this fine - HDMI through HDMI, and S-Video through component video. And the weirdest thing is I could have sworn this thing was working last night, but stopped working today morning. Could someone please check this and confirm if its by design or do I have a defective unit. Thanks!
mrgribbles 08-18-07, 06:23 PM Hi Mike. I think if you scored a 705 for $550, you're the leader of the pack.
6 ohm gets you 6-16 ohm coverage.
If you set HDMI audio out to NO. The audio will then pass to the TV assuming you're connected with HDMI.
EDIT: Please ignore the 2nd sentence. It should read: If you set HDMI audio out to YES, the audio will then pass to the TV assuming you're connected with HDMI.

As for me, I am not converting any SD material through the 705 so the chip doesn't matter. My DirecTv HR20 converts and outputs 1080i or 720p for all channels so I don't need upconversion in the 705. Don't need Reon. The A2 takes care of all my HD-DVD and SD DVD conversions. Love the sound of this receiver!
Question: if you are using Multichannel PCM from a player like the A2 through HDMI, can you still use the post processing modes like Neo and Neural, etc? And would you want to?
rsprance 08-18-07, 07:17 PM I asked this question early on in the thread and there were conflicting reports. Now that many of you have the receiver I have a pretty important question to me because of my budget.
I will be connecting the following devices...
PS3 (HDMI)
360 (HDMI)
Cable Box (HDMI)
DVD player (COMPONENT)
Media PC (COMPONENT)
Older DirectV (COMPONENT)
I am beginning construction on my theater and would LOVE to know if I can pass all of those through a single HDMI cable to my projector. If I can avoid buying a long compenent and S-Video cable it would be a huge savings. Since its a projector I wont need the sound to transfer through on the analog sources.
Will all these video sources get upconverted and sent through the HDMI port?
Thanks in advance for your help!
mrgribbles 08-18-07, 07:55 PM Yes Tim, post processing of MCH PCM is possible through the 705, just as if it was receiving a DD 5.1 stream. But you nailed THE question, "would you want to?" If a PCM lossless steam is bit for bit the original track as recorded/engineered but it happens to be 5.1, does applying DD PLIIx or others take away from original intent? I posed the same question in another thread some time back and was roundly drubbed by some knowledgeable folks who intelligently (more than I can do here) argued that PLIIx does not modify the tracks so much as it creates a rear surround channel that is made up from the tracks. Dolby makes some good points on their website regarding this. I'm not convinced that there isn't a bit of "creation" going on but probably less than I would think.
The way I treat it is that if I'm watching an action film I may post process . If the film is background music intensive then I push the "Pure Audio" button and really get immersed in the bit for bit creation. This AVR really gives us the ability to choose.

I think you can get all these through the 705. There are 3 HDMI ins and 3 Component ins. All will not be upconverted and the upconversion that would happen may not be to your liking.
Look at "New Onkyo 605 Owner" Post 592 & 594 for how the 705 will treat your analog & HDMI feeds. Your HDMI ins & outs will not get converted and if you come in with an analog 1080i signal it will go out 720p via HDMI.
I asked this question early on in the thread and there were conflicting reports.
YES you can pass it all through 1 HDMI... But you are only going to be able to assign 5 of those devices not all 6.... 3 hdmi or 3 component or any combination of the 3 adding up to 5.
With Hdmi monitor out option turned on... you will be able to display all these via one hdmi cable out to the tv.
Analog sources will be upconverted if they are less then 720p. If they are over 720p they will be down converted to 720p. This is maximum upconvertion possible on this unit.
The HDMI inputs are straight pass through.... they just pass the signal through at the resolution the source inputs them at.

Are you refering to the difference between upconversion and pass through? I am not sure if I completely undertsand what the limitation is.
Given the specific components I listed, what will I be forced to do? I REALIZED I JUST MADE A MISTAKE, MY DIRECTV IS S_VIDEO AND NOT COMPONENT. Does this save me? In other words...
2 1080p HDMI
1 1080i HDMI
2 720p Component
1 Crappy S-Video
Who buys a cooler for the PS3, it cools it self with its ginormous fan. The entire back of the motherboard is a heatsink with a fan thats almost the length of the ps3 in diameter.
If that was a snide comment directed at me... "who buys..."
I have no clearance, top to bottom, where my PS3 is installed and other equipment sits next to it on that platform in the cabinet; without a fan in the back of the cabinet sucking air out of the back (pulling it in from the front), all my equipment on that upper deck stays overheated just from that PS3 usage alone. It may have a big fan, but it doesn't magically move the ambient heat it spits out around its body to another dimension. I use the fan as a rear cabinet vent to flush out the lingering heated air.
Speak to people with respect and you may get some in return.

In the menu options you only have 5 selectable modes to assign various outputs to (hdmi, component). You mentioned you have 6 devices, if you buy this receiver you will only be controlling the video in/out of 5 of them.
This unit has 3 component in's and 3 HDMI in's. However you will only be able to assign a total combination of 5 devices.
Some sources that output to component can output up to 1080p (like a xbox 360) If you ran that 1080p component signal into this unit.. and output the video in HDMI it would only be 720p... 720p is the maximum upconversion this unit can achieve. The Onkyo 905 can upscale to 1080p ... if you want analog upscale up to 1080p that is the unit you need to be looking at.
I was also saying, that HDMI is a straight pass through 1080p hdmi in.. comes out at 1080p... no converting at all... 1080i hdmi in comes out at 1080i .. no converting.
Lastly, you can take 5 input video sources and output them in 1 hdmi cable out. (Its reason I wanted this unit myself. I have my LCD wall mounted and wanted all my sources coming in on 1 cable.)

Perfect. Now I understand it better. Thanks so much for your help on this!!
Just got my 705 today....I cant get a test tone manually or through the auto setup?. But the speakers work .
Hmm, I have a 705 (for a week or so now), and didn't realize it would only allow assignments of 5 devices. It doesn't really affect my situation, but it does seem as though it could be somewhat limiting in many setups. Three game machines, a HD TiVo, a DVD/BD/HD DVD (pick one) player, and a camcorder would take six; not counting computer inputs, separate BD & HD DVD players, etc.
Like I said, it won't hurt me with my existing setup, but it is something to keep in mind for future purchases (larger/more elaborate setups). Right now I have 3 game macines and a TiVo S3 hooked to it; but I am in the process of moving and have recently removed a DVD player, DVD recorder, and SACD player (not that it does video) from my system. The plan for the new house is to use the 705 as a receiver in the family room (now using it as a pre/pro), and get something a little more flexible for the main theater.
mrgribbles 08-19-07, 07:17 AM There are some ways to work-around the 5 device assignment issue. First would be pre-705 switch boxes. They are relatively inexpensive and many are remote controlled. You can do it for HDMI and component although switching component too many times could result in PQ loss.
whats the price this morn @ cc?
mrgribbles 08-19-07, 07:43 AM With all due respect my friend, is the website down? What I see is what you see and it happens to still be at the same price it was yesterday. Unless I'm mistaken there is no hidden/special pricing for account holders unless we get an email with a coupon offer for a discount. The 10% off coupon that we received last week expired at 11:59pm yesterday.
kmeleon 08-19-07, 08:27 AM The best price at this point is J&R, I know we aren't supposed to post pricing so I'll just say it's better than circuit city:D
rstrauss 08-19-07, 08:30 AM Will the 705 pass a component input through the component output with out conversion? In otherwords, if a signal comes in at 1080i, will it go out the component at 1080i? Also, if a signal comes in at 480p, will it be upconverted to 720p?
Thanks.
mrgribbles 08-19-07, 08:44 AM Will the 705 pass a component input through the component output with out conversion? In otherwords, if a signal comes in at 1080i, will it go out the component at 1080i? Also, if a signal comes in at 480p, will it be upconverted to 720p?
Thanks. Component out = Component in, so yes to Question 1.
To upscale a 480p signal you would need to bring it in composite or s-video and then out component. Or composite, s-video, component in and out HDMI. You will also need to force the hidden menu to 720p.
HDTVChallenged 08-19-07, 11:42 AM What I want to know is what genius decided that 2 optical inputs were enough ... and that we *need* 3 coax inputs? ... granted some of the competing AVRs are making the same mistake.
mrgribbles 08-19-07, 11:46 AM There are three optical ins. One's on the front.
HDTVChallenged 08-19-07, 11:59 AM There are three optical ins. One's on the front.
Nice ;) ... reminds me of the olden days when I had to run a composite cable around to the 2nd video input on the front of my Sony analog TV.
But my real point was that I only have one source device with a coax output vs. 4 that have only optical outputs (and the coax device has an optical too.) You'd think, AVR designers could do basic (statistical) math. ... And again it's not just Onkyo.
mrgribbles 08-19-07, 12:04 PM Nice. My feeling exactly. The bigger question is why they have the plethora of RCA, S-Video and composite inputs. Plenty more room for the good stuff if they get rid of the mid 60's connectors. BTW, there are some pretty cheap opt-coax converters out there if need be.
mrgribbles 08-19-07, 02:10 PM Over in the 605 thread one of our European colleagues found out some info on firmware updating. Apparently Onkyo Europe has a newer firmware version for the 605. The new firmware would read "DSP6051:07601A". On the front of the AVR, if you hold down Display and concurrently press Standby the firmware revisions will show on the display. Pressing Tone+ will cycle you through the numbers.
On my 705 the firmware is:
MAIN1.01/07618A
DSP8051:07601A
DSP8052:07518A
DSP8053:07518A
HDMI1.00/07517A
VD:3.58/07609A
Of interest is that my DSP-1 is the upgrade revision#. This upgrade was supposed to fix some issues with DD THD.
rishi76 08-19-07, 03:39 PM As I posted earlier, when the HDMI Monitor is set to No, HDMI does not pass through to the TV. So I cannot get S-Video in -> Component Out as well as have HDMI's working like I did in the 674 - this provided the best picture combination. And btw, from manuals it seems that the 605 can still do this (it passes HDMI even with HDMI monitor set to No) but the 705, 805 and 875 do not! Arghhhh!!!
Well, my workaround for this is that I set Resolution to 720p in the hidden menu as I do not have any component sources so not worried about downconverting 1080i to 720p for now. The pic quality with this as good as I got earlier with the 674 or better, but now the TV forgets the zoom setting every time I change sources. Oh well...you gain some...you lose some...
alexkidd 08-19-07, 03:41 PM Hi, i have a few questions about this receiver.
I have a Toshiba 51H83 1080i RPTV that uses DVI. If I use an HDMI to DVI convector cable will everything work properly? Also I have a PS3, if it outputs 1080p to the Onkyo, can the Onkyo pass that as 1080i to my TV? Lastly, if I send a 1080i component signal to the Onkyo it would down convert it to 720p over HDMI. What happens if I also run a set of components to the TV, will it keep the 1080i signal? Can you set which inputs are outputted to HDMI and which to component?
Thanks :)
A&M 350Z 08-19-07, 07:29 PM Alright. I am embarassed to ask, but how do I get this thing to output TrueHD. I have my A2 hook up via HDMI. The receiver will only light up the PCM and Direct lights. Whats the trick? Thanks.
A&M 350Z 08-19-07, 07:38 PM Just figured out you have to have HDMI out off. But I still only get PCM, MULTICH but it will not let me select TruHD. Only the 25 other listening modes. I cant get TruHD to light up.

That's because no HD player out there today can output raw bitsream to the reciever yet.The PCM Mutich you see is the player converting TruHD to that lossless format, which is the same as TruHD.
Just hooked up my 705 last night and was blown away!:D
These new formats are fantastic through mutichannel PCM matrixed with the THX neural 7.1.I was a bit skeptical at first but hearing is believing, big difference over optical.I also think running the PS3 and A2 through the 705 helps the picture as well;X-Men 3 on BD looked less grainy and more filmlike, good times!

A&M 350Z 08-19-07, 08:10 PM So is it best to leave it on the Direct listening mode?

Your DirecTV should have HDMI as well, at least the H20 does. If you don't have this receiver you'll probably want to get it to receive all the new HD channels coming in Sept.

I use the THX mode to matrix the usual 5.1 HD formats to 7.1 as I have two back speakers. As to what sounds good to you thats a matter of personal preference.I personally like the extra sound field the THX creates along with the mutichannel PCM.:)

What I want to know is what genius decided that 2 optical inputs were enough ... and that we *need* 3 coax inputs? ... granted some of the competing AVRs are making the same mistake.I agree; most game consoles and sat boxes use optical. You can get converters if nec; but it's less of an issue the more HDMI sources you have. I have TiVo S3, PS3, and Xbox360 Elite all connected with HDMI; so no need for digital audio from those. Actually a very nice touch would have been an (extra) HDMI connector on the front panel.
warlord260 08-19-07, 10:42 PM saltdoc, was wondering if you have your ascends connected to 705 yet. im falling of fence tomorrow on the ascends. still within 30 day return period for my klispch surrounds. let me know. also how long did it take to receive ascends after order.

Anyone out there have more info on this issue?I don't know if this is a coincidence; but I labeled all three of my HDMI inputs and they always show up the way I name them. I hooked up the Wii thru component, and conncected it to game/tv. I labeled it "Wii", and it worked, but when I first select it or turn on the receiver it shows up as game/tv for maybe 10 or 20 seconds before reverting to the edited name. I assumed it was due to the the transcoding, and maybe the default value shows up till the receivers video processor isn't "busy"......but who knows?

All the decoding is done in the player that way, but as the signal coming in is still a digital signal it allows for processing such as bass management, THX, etc.
elmer1024 08-20-07, 07:31 AM whats the price this morn @ cc?
The price is back to $ 799.00 with no coupon and no discount.
Very strange since i bought last week for $550.00 with $ 6.99 shipping on line.
I have had mine for 4 days now and for the money and value it is a good deal. If in upconverted to 1080P then it the price would just triple so if you have 1080i or 1080P device you hooked up you really do not need the upconvert.
Keep the good post guys it very informative

mrgribbles 08-20-07, 08:28 AM Its actually $50 less than that when added to the cart. I just received a coupon email from CC but I can't read HTML email on my Blackberry so maybe someone else has it and can post if there's anything of interest.
darwin316 08-20-07, 09:02 AM i see i'm not the only one that missed the deal from last week!

I cant edit this either.

Khoi Pham 08-20-07, 11:45 AM Anybody knows why when I'm using "pure audio" and "direct", I have to output from my sub? all other modes my sub is working properly. I'm using 705 as preamp.
Thanks.
ncpierjockey 08-20-07, 11:47 AM I am setting up a brand new entertainment system to go in my brand new entertainment center/bookase. So I bought the 705 last week. Also got a 40" Samsung LCD (66F).
So now I'm looking for speakers. I have some serious limitations in that the fronts and center all have to go on the bookshelves (no place for stands or floor speakers) that are only 12" deep. I identified some that would fit in my space and went to a local high end audio store to have a listen.
I wanted to hear the ERA Design 4 and 5 and the Triad In Room Silver Omni and the B&W 685. The guy kinda sniffed when I told him I got a 705 and said that it wouldn't work with the ERA or Triad speakers, something having to do with efficiency and amps. The B&W sounded pretty decent. Listened to some Paradigm Mini Monitors elsewhere and liked them too, for $100 less then the B&W. Listened to Def Tech SM 350 and Pro Monitor 1000 and wasn't impressed.
I am mostly clueless on interpreting speaker specs. What should I look for so that they'll "work" with my 705? Any recommendations (12x17x9 room, 50/50 music/HT)??

Enigma,
question for renaming the inputs,
can I rename these inputs with my wife, kids name rather then ps3 wii bluray etc? that would be cool, my wife and kids would love to see their names in there. You know, anything to justify for getting the 705 :D I am still waiting for the better deals.
captive 08-20-07, 12:40 PM Be sure to read the manual, it said it will not take effect unless when you are out you have to hit enter again, it works for me.
It also doesnt display your edited name if you scroll through to see what type of processing mode you are using or what type of source you are receiver, but once you go back to the volume it should display the edited source name.
mrgribbles 08-20-07, 12:41 PM My take on the name thing is that you have a number of different screens on the display and the name change only takes effect on the screen that displays volume. So if you cycle through it will go from XA2 to DVD to DVD then back to XA2, as an example. At least I think so.
Peter, you can name it anything you want. Just don't use your girlfriends' name(s). That usually POs the legal woman.
EDIT: Sorry captive, you were posting as i was typing. Well at least we agree.

I can't get the 705 to go into late night mode when I'm watching a DVD. My player is an Oppo 970 connected via HDMI. The 970 is set to pass 5.1 over hdmi. Do I need to change the setting on the Oppo? What will the LCD say when I'm in a listening mode that supports late night.

You have to be in Dolby Digital, DD+ or DD THD. The display should briefly display L Night and Off, low or High. There is no indicator on the display that lights up.

You need to get tight with the "DISPLAY" button. Lets say you are listening to a DVD with a DD 5.1 sound track. The display on your 705 will read "DVD -20". That is the input you've selected and the volume level. If you now press the Display button on the remote the display will now read "DD 5.1" This means you are receiving Dolby Digital, 5.1 channels. If you press display again it will say something like "DD PLIIx". That is what your receiver is putting out/post processing.
There are smaller read lights on the display that also would light up, DD is Dolby Digital, DTS, etc. The small green lights are what the receiver is putting out to the system.

I'm waiting for the Labor Day sales!
After reading most of the posts on this thread, I'm thoroughly confused. I am leaning toward the 705 to go with the new Pioneer 6010 TV(1080p) I have on order; but, I'm confused about what video signals the 705 can pass through, upconvert, or downscale.
Currently I only have an SD DVD and SD cable but will be upgrading to Comcast HD cable DVR, 1080i, I believe. Also, by years end, I plan on getting either Blu-Ray or HD DVD. I'm not a gamer, but, my son/grandson has a WII and XBox so I'd like them to be able to hook up when they're visiting. My current system is an older 5:1 surround. I don't plan on changing speakers.
I suspect that the Pioneer TV may do a better job of upscaling than the 705, so in the end, I may want to be able to pass through everything without any scaling.
Finally, I'd like to maximize HDMI and minimize the number of cables, but not at the expense of video quality.
Will I be able to pass through the receiver all of these devices:
1. Without any upscaling or downscaling either through HDMI and/or component?
2. Can I use all the HDMI inputs and a single HDMI output without any down scaling? I've read posts that 1080i is downscaled to 720p.
3. Any other suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks for your guidance.
mrgribbles 08-20-07, 05:01 PM In the "new onkyo 605 owner" thread look at posts 592 & 594.
As long as you don't change the signal path through the AVR it will not get touched. EG: HDMI out = HDMI in, and so on. 1080p out when 1080p in. Upconvert your signal and the 720p max limit applies.
mrgribbles 08-20-07, 05:18 PM Any recommendations on listening modes for those of us with 5.1 speaker configurations?
Pretty much most of them. You won't get DD PLIIx but you will get DD PLII. Neo:6 is one of my 5.1 favorites, THX cinema, but since most of the HD material that you would get as MCH PCM is 5.1, so for a real treat, try direct or pure. When you use pure, you can only use HDMI for video as the AVR shuts everything else off. Excellent. The THX neural is interesting how it treats SD tracks, I'm not sure there is much that is specific to neural but I'd like to find some myself. Experiment.
vanns (http://www.vanns.com/shop/servlet/item/features/538999963) has a special price going on now
Thx for that ... that was a good price for me so i went for it...
Does anyone know if Logitech has codes out for it's Harmony Remotes and the SR705?
Thanks
rishi76 08-20-07, 07:00 PM Yes - I updated my Harmony remote this weekend with 705 codes. Some codes (4-5) did not work, but of course easily fixed by 'learning' the commands.
jrjr729 08-20-07, 09:42 PM I have alreasy purchased the 705 as a new av receiver for my home theater. My old Onkyo 787 was fried in a lightning strike. That unit was situated in an open backed shelving unit with about an inch and one half clearence all around it. According to the manual, Onkyo then also recommended 8 inches of free space on the top. Not paying any attention to "RTFM", I ran the 787 with no concern about heat. Anyway the 705 also states that it requires 8 inches of free space above it so I was wondering if it would work in the same enclosure.
But when I got the 705 out of the box I noticed that it had a tremendous number of vent openings in the case relative to my old unit, so I am concerned about heat build up. There are easily 2X to 3X the amount of venting on the 705 case.
Cutting the furniture open to match the new venting would pretty much destroy the furniture.
I seem to remember some discussion about fans for the 605. I suppose I could cut a hole into the credenza and mount an upward venting fan. (As long as my wife doesn't notice.)
Questions:
1. Can anyone tell me a good source of fans that come with grills and appropriate power sources. I want to keep the unit as small as possible but still be sure that it is able to cool the unit quietly. I also want to to flush mount it with the top of the piece of furniture so that it doesn't look bad. (That means making it hard for my wife to notice, right away.)
2. Accordning to the Onkyo manual, the convenience receptical (AC outlet) on the 705 is switched. Does that mean I can hook up the fan's power supply to it and that it will only turn on when the receiver is on? That would be ideal for me since I will not be running the receiver continuously. If the AC outlet is always hot can someone tell me how to run the fan only in conjunction with the receiver?
Thank you for your time.
In the "new onkyo 605 owner" thread look at posts 592 & 594.
As long as you don't change the signal path through the AVR it will not get touched. EG: HDMI out = HDMI in, and so on. 1080p out when 1080p in. Upconvert your signal and the 720p max limit applies.
Thanks for the reply. Do the workarounds (SD upconvert & 1080i pass through)discussed in the 605 thread apply to the 705 also?

Yes. Just about everything in terms of operation apply to the 705, except the 705 does a bit more with sound processing.

Take a look at the bottom of the unit. It has 2 fans built in. Even though I have a DVD player directly on top of my 705 I haven't had what I would consider overly excessive heat and I measure mine every so often with an IR thermometer. My components are in an open stand so they're not enclosed like many set ups.
I'm simply not too excited about this heat thing. Onkyo says it can go 80F over ambient and thats pretty warm, much more than I've measured.
All that being said, trying to keep components cool is never a bad idea and adding forced ventilation in certain set ups will never hurt, certainly could help.
The 120 V AC outlet is switched so I believe it will only be on when the unit is on. It is 1 amp rated.
About 1/4 of the way into the 605 thread there are a number of suggestions on fans, etc. that I recall sounded pretty good. Try searching it but look toward the earlier posts. Good luck.
SaltDoc 08-21-07, 12:42 AM saltdoc, was wondering if you have your ascends connected to 705 yet. im falling of fence tomorrow on the ascends. still within 30 day return period for my klispch surrounds. let me know. also how long did it take to receive ascends after order.
Warlord. - please see my reply on the ascends forum - welcome to the club! I ordered them on a tues pm and they got here the next wednesday.
thanks mrgribbles for all the useful info! and to others of course.
i haven't had any problem changing inputs names - my PS3 didn't have a problem showing up under game/tv but it takes a few seconds to change each time on the display as others have noted.
also, JR.com has a decent price now - not the legendary one but better than cc.
Jeremy Anderson 08-21-07, 01:12 AM I just want to say: I watched Open Range tonight at about -10 from reference... and for anyone who has seen it, you know that first shotgun blast in the saloon? DAMN.
The opening of the movie with the thunder and rain was maybe the perfect demo material for the effect that Audyssey MultEQ XT has, i.e. making the entire surround soundstage cohesive. I was playing the movie in DTS with Neural THX 7.1 to matrix my center surround, and the effect of the rain all around me and the thunder properly echoing cross-channel was outstanding. But when that shotgun blast went off and I felt my SVS punch me in the chest, I got a giant grin on my face. I've played that scene countless times (as well as the opening), and never has it sounded as realistic and brutally tight as it does with the 705. By the time I heard the final gunfight in the movie, the little voice in my head was saying "OH YEAH... PURCHASE JUSTIFIED".
I'm still using DPL-IIx Music for 2-channel material (though I tweak center width down a notch), but I'm starting to really like Neural THX 7.1 for synthesizing a rear channel. Every movie I've thrown at it so far seems to have better directionality and panning with it, and playing games in 5.1 on my Xbox 360 seems to confirm the same so far. I'm still toying with all the options, learning as much as I can, but I'll be damned if this isn't the best sound I've ever had in my home theater.
scorcho 08-21-07, 01:19 AM I had my mind set on the 805 but noticed I can get the 705 for $250 less, is the 805 worth the extra money? I will be connecting a PS3, XBOX 360 Elite, and DTV HD DVR all with HDMI and my Wii via component input. I have 2 HDMI inputs on my HL-S6187W DLP set, any opinions? Thanks.

Thanks.I have no experience with the 805; but the 705 seems to have pretty much the same connectivity, feature set, video processor, etc; with the 805 having larger/beefier amplification. I'm using my 705 as a pre/pro, so it would be of no benefit to me. I also have a PS3, Xbox360 Eite, and TiVo S3 connected via HDMI; and Wii via component. I now have a spare HDMI input on my plasma (I have two). I personally think the 705 is the sweet spot pricing wise, until you get to the 905, which offers a plethora of additional features, higher quality amps, power supplies, etc; in addition to REON processing (and an extra HDMI input). Some of these are also on the 875 (REON and extra HDMI), but again the 905 seems to offer significant extra value. Then again street prices on the 905 are more than double those of 705.

I think enigma nailed it. The only couple of cents I would add is that there is a power difference (the 805 is 20# heavier, more copper), the DACs are name brand and have a following and it has a THX Ultra2 cert. On the side of the 705 I would note that bugs that have plagued the 605 and 805 are not an issue in the 705. In fact, my (and others) unit looks like it was re-opened at the factory and re-worked or updated before shipping.
If added power is a concern then the 805, if not, I feel the 705 is performance/value leader in the Onkyo lineup.
Cilent1 08-21-07, 08:17 AM Anyone know if the 705 will pass a 1080/24p signal though hdmi?
Thanks
JustinHEMI05 08-21-07, 08:55 AM Alright,
I have been trying to dig through these threads on the 605/705/805 to find the advantages of one over the other. I also printed all the spec sheets from Onkyo and compared side by side. But, I haven't been able to make sense of much of it (being a newbie). So I was hoping that someone could tell me what the 705 does over the 605 and whether or not its worth the minor cost increase over the 605. You can leave out the 805 because I figured that out on my own. The spec sheets of the 705 and 605 are very very similar and I don't notice much difference other than the THX cert. Is there something else I am missing?
Thanks
Justin
mrgribbles 08-21-07, 08:55 AM Anyone know if the 705 will pass a 1080/24p signal though hdmi?
Thanks
I don't recall anyone specifically confirming this for the 705 but the 805 definitely does. Since the 705 and 805 pretty much share the same platform, I would expect the 705 will also pass 1080p/24, but it has not been confirmed to my recollection.
Thanks for all the info in this post. It seems the 705 is the best bet for me but I got a dumb question. I'll only be using 5 speakers, is there a setting in the 705 I need to set to tell the receiver I have 5 or does the receiver always use 7.1 and I'll just lose some sound until I get 2 more speakers?
Thanks

When you run Audyssey it will automatically detect 6 channels instead of 8. Also, when you go into speaker config just set rears to no. You're good to go.

Yes, plus the sub.
Ok this leads me to 1 more question. In my present setup I have the 2 Front,1 Center and sub woofer then I have my last 2 speakers behind my seating area. It was stated that in the settings of the 705 I should have "Rear Speakers" set to "No",should they be set to "Yes" with my setup?
Thanks

No, set them to surrounds. It won't work if you hopscotch the sides and try to call them rears.

ncpierjockey 08-21-07, 10:17 AM I never got a response to this. Should I post in the speaker group instead?
I am setting up a brand new entertainment system to go in my brand new entertainment center/bookase.
Any recommendations (12x17x9 room, 50/50 music/HT)??
mrgribbles 08-21-07, 10:31 AM Look on the ERA speaker website. They recommend a receiver with 75w minimum per channel. The 705 has 100w. The satellites are 8/6 ohm so there's also no problem.
If you're concerned about power, look for speakers with high efficiency ratings. A speaker with an efficiency rating of 89 dB is twice as loud as a speaker rated 86 dB. The ERAs are mid-80's. I personally don't think you'll have a problem driving the ERA 4 or 5 speakers.
alexkidd 08-21-07, 11:51 AM I am going down to the USA this weekend to pick up a 705 or 805, havent decided yet. I really need help with a couple questions though. I have a Toshiba 51H83 RPTV 1080i with DVI. If I use an HDMI to DVI cable will I be ok? Also, If I send 1080i component in the HDMI out will downconvert to 720p right? So if I run component out to the TV as well as HDMI would it stay at 1080i or would I be better off running it straight to the TV bypassing the Onkyo. Thanks.

HDMI/DVI should be OK, likely up to the cable & connectors if problems.
Component @ 1080i in = 720p out HDMI
If you are going to do a component run, I'd take it straight to the TV. Analog signals are not enhanced by switching, they may not be degraded, but they definitely won't be improved.
stimpyrules 08-21-07, 12:24 PM I want to buy the 605 or 705, but i have a question.

I never got a response to this. Should I post in the speaker group instead?
Take a look at the Aperion site. Their 523 series may fit the bill. I just installed the 533PT, 533VAC and 532LR for rear speakers and I'm VERY happy with them all. Great company, excellent product.

Well, that's what I thought. The B&W 685 he "let me" listen to have an efficiency of 88 dB, are 8 ohm and require 25-100 watts. So I wonder why he didn't want me to listen to the ERA 4, which was the same price? He made a big show of swapping out the high end amp he was using for an amp "more like" the 705.

You didn't buy his high end pre-pro/amplifier(s) combo. Shame on you.
Don't know if this has been asked before but will I be able to hook up my computer via HDMI (video card with HDMI output) to the receiver and pass video onto my plasma. I have a blu-ray drive in my PC so I was wondering if I will get 1080p video and uncompressed audio via an HDMI video card. Thanks

If you can do it now, direct to the plasma, I would see no reason you couldn't go through the 705. If you haven't tried going direct, the only issue I could see would be with HDCP and handshaking. My Mits DLP has a DVI port that doesn't use HDCP specifically for PC connections. I haven' t tried it through the 705, yet.

rutlian 08-21-07, 04:12 PM guys I just took the plunged and bought the receiver at CC, mrgribbles hi there, can't wait no more hopefully price will drop still in a few days or in time during the labor day. I still envy you guys who were able to get at 54x.xx something. But I will be hooking up my avr to my 5.1 and will add 2 more speaker to make it 7.1, mrgribbles I'll make sure that the wife's name will be input 1 not my girlfriend's name :D , But anyway I have one dummy question
is it better to use a wire connector to reciever I have never done that before. is that what they call banana plug? Since this is a new avr I would like to treat it special. Wish me luck.
Thanks everyone,
Peter
Utahred1981 08-21-07, 04:17 PM Has anybody tried to use the upconvert function over HDMI? I have my Tivo which uses S-Video connected to the back of my receiver and the HDMI cable going to my tv.
I noticed that the picture looks like it's suffering from video "noise". Anybody else have this issue when using s-video cable?
outlanderbz 08-21-07, 04:45 PM Hardware Setting>HDMI: Question :)
It usually shows up around very small text, like HD channel BUGS (the little graphic at bottom right corner of the screen) and sports scores or tickers on ESPN and such.
woots, i have noticed this same thing. I used to have my comcast HD DVR hooked up directly to my samsung 1080p DLP via HDMI. I then purchased the 705 and ran my HDMI to the receiver and then on to my DLP. I noticed that ESPN HD looked a bit more grainy and pixelated. It was so noticeable that it led me to the forums to check how the 705 handles 1080i HDMI. I thought maybe the 705 was doing some converting and not letting my DLP do the work. From what i have read everyone says that the 705 just passes through the HDMI signal. I find this odd that when i hook up my comcast box directly to my TV the picture looks better. I am running into the same input so the picture settings are the same. I have also checked all the settings in my comcast box.
very odd....

Out of the box, my tivo pic also left a lot to be desired that way. I then went to the hidden menu and made upconvert settings to 720p, contrast 55 and sharpness 16. The pic is much better now with the HDMI cable.
egcarter 08-21-07, 04:54 PM What is the 705 lacking when compared to the 805?
When you go from the 705 to the 805, it adds:
THX Ultra2 certified (vs. THX Select2)
130W/channel (vs 100W)
Modular separates internal construction
Much Higher Instantaneous Current Capability (60A vs 36A)
Burr Brown DACs
More Connectivity
wider analog video bandwidth (100Mhz vs. 50Mhz)
Zone 3
Direct Mode
110db Line-In S/N (vs. 106dB)
In the new product line, this receiver step-up (705 -> 805) probably has the biggest "delta" between models.

rutlian 08-21-07, 05:01 PM guys question:
I am hooking up my 705 later to my systems and this is how it will go:
please feel free to correct me if there any better way to get the superb video/audio quality.
set up will be:
1.Panny bd10ak to Onkyo705 to mits hd1000u via HDMI
2.HD A2 to onkyo705 to mitshd1000u via HDMI
3.comcast cable box directly to Mits hd1000u and using optical cable to 705 for audio.
(is it better to use component to onkyo705 and then component out to mits hd1000u
my cable box don't have hdmi so I am connecting optical to have audio from cable.)
Look simple and I love it to have it simple.
and do I get dts es and dd ex via hdmi if I am watching SD DVD movies?
Thanks for reply,
Peter
jrjr729 08-21-07, 05:35 PM Thank you for your timely response. Since you, Mrgribbles, is not concerned, neither am I. You appear to know your stuff based upon all of your posts here and on the 605 thread. For those of you who are still concerned, I found a fan set up on the BET site that allows you to place double cooling fans right on top of the receiver. They are set up in a small box like unit that sucks air out and vents it to either the front and rear or sides depending on your set up. If I have a roblem I'll go wih that, for now I'll stick to Mrgribbles.

I am running DirecTv HD box(HR20) and my HD-A2 HD-DVD via HDMI to the 705 and then out to my Z3 projector and the picture looks great. I tried my SD DVD player upconverted through component and then HDMI to the Z3 but it had problems synching with it so I just run the component cable directly to the projector. No big deal.
Remember HDMI in... HDMI out. The signal is unaltered through the 705, just acts as a switcher which is nice!

I just ordered a 705 today, can't wait to get it.
The 705 has an IR in plugin. What works in it? Is there a cable with an IR sensor that you could put somewhere else and plug it in to the receiver? If so where could I find one?

I tried using the IR plug on the back. I took a mini jack cable and plugged it from the IR plug to my Niles Infrared repeater system but it didn't always turn on the 705 so I went back to an IR light emitter stuck on the front of the 705 and then plugged into my Niles unit. Now I can just point my remote straight at the screen (instead of sideways) to get all my components to work. I don't know why the direct plug didn't work.

I just hook up mu receiver and test tone even doing the audessey there is sounds coming out from all the speakers, but when play blu ray and hd dvd input 1 (dvd) no sounds at all only video, I have my hd players connected hdmi to hdmi 1 and 2 and output hdmi to my display. I turned on the hdmi audio still nothing even the dsp and
other sounds modes can not display even if I pressed the remote nothing happened.
but my cable box which is connected straight to my display via component and connected optical on games/tv input there is a sounds coming out from the cable box.

Pure Audio
In this mode, the display and video circuitry are turned
off, minimizing possible noise sources for the ultimate in
high-fidelity reproduction. (As the video circuitry is
turned off, only video signals input through HDMI IN
can be output.)
Also, bear in mind that this mode applies nothing to the output, no Audyssey no overlay processing, just the best possible fidelity. Try it with a favorite track and switch back and forth. Its excellent. Very full and detailed. Direct is pretty cool too
mrgribbles 08-22-07, 10:09 AM guys I just took the plunged and bought the receiver at CC, mrgribbles hi there, can't wait no more hopefully price will drop still in a few days or in time during the labor day.
Thanks everyone,
Peter
Congrats Peter, you're gonna love it.
Banana plugs are excellent. I use a gizmo called a terminal connector, its a crimp on connector that has a pin on it that you could stick into the binding post, no loose copper strands. They are very similar to speaker pins but the way they are made, I feel is a bit better for AVR binding posts. I grab a handful at work but I'm pretty sure Radio Shack carries them. They're about 10% the cost of banana plugs, not quite as cool but very functional.

COuld it be that you have HDMI Audio out set to YES. If so, set it to OFF.
I'm in the market for a new 7.1 HT setup to go with my new Samsung 40" LCD.
Currently the reviews of the Onkyo HT-S907 seem very good, but the receiver looks like it'll need to be upgraded. I was thinking of going with the Onkyo TX-SR705.
Connecting the following components: XBOX 360, PS3, HDTV DVR, HTPC, Misc portable MP3 Players, DVD Changer
The reason for the HT system purchase is that if I go that route and then sell the 605 from the package, I only pay an additional ~$50 for the DVD changer.
Any Pros/Cons to this setup?
Any alternative suggestions?
CTBinNC 08-22-07, 10:32 AM A couple of listening mode questions:
1. I have digital cable DVR which is set to output Dolby Digital via digital coax. As expected, the corresponding Dolby Digital icon on the front of my 705 lights up to indicate it is receiving this signal. However, I doubt that in all cases I'm receiving 6 channels but rather just 2 based upon the source encoding. Is this assumption correct? If so, is there a way to tell when this is the case? If I'm receiving distinct multiple channels I tend to prefer the Direct option but if not, I'd like to know so that I can matrix the sound to my liking.
2. I'm also a little confused  about the THX options. Should you use these if your source (eg DVD) does not indicate THX mastering. Does it do anything for you? Likewise, does your DVD player and cables need to have some sort of THX certification in order for these settings to provide any benefit? Thanks.

Hi mrgribbles is that under the menu of hardware setup? Because I remember says hdmi audio (off) and I turned it on. Should I turned it off? because even before turning hdmi audio on there are no signal already except for the video?
My cable box via optical sounds really good it is quite an improvement from my old onkyo sr tx701, I noticed the difference even in just optical. But to my problem is this maybe my hdmi cable has dvi/hdmi adapter? but why I am getting video.?
And one more thing it says also no signal when I pressed display button even tho there is a video.

I am a proponent of the Onkyo HTIB systems as a great way to get into A/V. The receivers are good and even though the speakers are much maligned by the "better ears than I" crowd, I find them fine, more so than other HTIB setups. In your case, I think I'd forgo the entry level gear as your already looking to throw another $700 or so on this excellent 705 receiver. So go straight for components. You can certainly do better than an HTIB DVD player, and likely for less. BTW, the 907 setup comes with a 604, not a 605 receiver. I no longer recommend any HTIB setups simply because they haven't caught up with the new technology. When they star putting together packages with the later model receivers I'll revise my position.
Check out the HTIB alternatives thread. There are plenty of experts in there whom can offer a lot of advice on speakers etc. If you were planning to go with the 907 setup for some time and then add when and where you feel the need I'd say go for it, but if you've already got the upgrade bug, go separates.

Thank you very much I will try later, I know I may have to upgrade for DVR/CABLE I am really excited. One more dummy question. I am assuming that
input 1 (hdmi 1) will be under dvd on the receiver I will assigned the bluray player and the cable box will be under game/tv via optical (default to opt1) how can I assign my hd a2 to hdmi 2 without interchanging the input from dvd. I will spend more time later in the manual, I set up my 2 backsorround last night so it was late already. I was in the panic mode at 12 mindnight and need to get up about 530am this morning so I hit avsforum for help.

Here's from a post a couple of pages back:
You need to get tight with the "DISPLAY" button. Lets say you are listening to a DVD with a DD 5.1 sound track. The display on your 705 will read "DVD -20". That is the input you've selected and the volume level. If you now press the Display button on the remote the display will now read "DD 5.1" This means you are receiving Dolby Digital, 5.1 channels. If you press display again it will say something like "DD PLIIx". That is what your receiver is putting out/post processing.
There are smaller red lights on the display that also would light up, DD is Dolby Digital, DTS, etc. The small green lights are what the receiver is putting out to the system.
The THX post processing modes will work great with any source material but should be outstanding for THX mastered disks. Try THX Select 2. Most of the gurus seem o favor the THX modes over DD PLII & PLIIx. I tend to start a track and switch around. It always amazes me how different they all sound. The exception to this is DTS and for that I always choose Neo:6. This is a very opinionated and subjective subject. Experiment.

Noticed more noise on the 705 S up-convert of DVD (Pioneer ganged carosel) to HDMI than I had with a Rotel 1098 up-convert to component. Both ended at a Sony Pearl which ultimately outputs 1080p. The buildings panning sequence at the beginning of Star Trek Revolution is good "test disk" for noise and "jaggies". May try still going thru the Rotel to get to component before inputting to 705. Ultimately, I may connect directly to Pearl with S, but then I face having to change the projector and receiver which I'm trying to avoid. By the way, both DirecTV and the Sony S-300 Blu-ray look great thru the 705 (yes you get 1080p/24 pass-thru). Also, the 705's sound after Audessy is much better than the lot more costly Rotel.

Set your HD DVD player to Auto over HDMI. This will get you MCH PCM on DD+ and THD tracks, but give you all the standard DD & DTS as bitstream over HDMI. I think you want to set your Blu-ray to PCM.

I initially started off with the same idea. But then I happened to drop in at local Fry's that had this system as well as some Polk Audio speakers. Once the sales guy helped me listen to same material on both speakers, there was ABSOLUTELY no question that I wont even think about the Onkyo speakers any more. Instead I got the following:
Onkyo 705 - whatever price you can get ($5xx.xx for me from CC deal)
Onkyo DV-CP704 6-disk DVD changer with upconversion - $170 from J&R
Polk Audio RM6750 speaker package (4 sats + center + sub) - $200+tax from Fry's --> all used as rear / rear surround; center not used
Polk Audio R300s (2) - $100 for 2 pieces from Fry's used as fronts
Polk Audio CSi25 - $100 from Fry's used as center
---------------------------------
Total ~ $1200 for a 7.1 system with latest receiver etc.
Experience - AWESOME!
If you just want a 5.1 system, you can save another $200. And the fact that those Polk sats are smaller and prettier than Onkyo speakers duznt hurt too.
The speakers keep going on sale on and off in store as well as online, if you go this route...

Good to have confirmation on this from you too!
It's not ideal though, as the TV loses zoom settings every time I change sources! I earlier used to get upconversion to component with the 674, and it was almost as good as this. But cant do here coz if I set HDMI Mointor to No to get output from component, HDMI sources are not passed through. In 674, HDMI still used to work - I much preferred that. Weird thing is, 605 still allows it, but 705 and above do not! Sucks!

Maybe i am not understanding this or just missing something but doesnt this mean that anything under those numbers goes to my subwoofer but if my subwoofer is set to 80Hz then how does that work?
I have the Mythos five F/R speakers, Mythos seven center, Mythos gem surrounds with a supercube III sub.

The subwoofer setting is a filter for the LFE channel ONLY, not a cutoff for redirected bass. And actually, the Audyssey setup doesn't change that setting - it comes at 80 out of the box. I bumped mine up to 120 so the full range of the LFE channel is reproduced. The only time I would recommend bumping this down to 80 is if you're getting some hum.
I would ignore the cutoff points it recommends for your speakers and set them manually. On my system (Polk RTi28 mains, surrounds, CSi40 center), it recommended full range for all channels, which I know isn't true. My general rule (and others may argue this) is to set the cutoff 20-40Hz higher (depending on driver size) than the -3dB point of your speaker (to give it a little room for the transition from speaker to sub, since it's a gradual filter). Using this logic and looking at the specs of your speakers, I recommend 80Hz for your Mythos 5s, 100Hz for your 7, and 100Hz for the Gems. I would have gone lower, but those speakers use 3 1/2" drivers and I wouldn't try to stress them with too much on the low end. Your 5s can handle a little lower because they have separate drivers for bass.
Hope that helped.

Yes. All analog in component & out HDMI has a max 720p output.

Are you saying that component and HDMI are not concurrently output to the TV?? I haven't tried this with the 705 because i now have 3 HMI ins but I do recollect I had both component and HDMI available with the 605 so all I did was swap sources on the TV. at least I think so. Please confirm that Hdmi to Hdmi is just a pass-through, meaning that a
1080i into Hdmi 1, 2 or 3 -> Hdmi4 outputs it as 1080i, not 720p?
And another quick question: HDMI 4 "out" to HDTV carries only video, right?

Don't take my word for it, its only been posted re-verified in these threads a couple of hundred times. Also, technically its a pass through for video, audio can be processed in the AVR over HDMI if you so desire
No, HDMI out carries both audio & video depending on how you set the HDMI Audio setting inside the AVR.

Actually, there are a few operational differences between the 6 & 7. One other thing that semi causes me heartburn is that in the 605 when you access the hidden menu and start to make changes, if you push the input selector (say Cab/Sat) that you want, the TV will show the broadcast so you can make adjustments real time. The menu will persist until you press the setup button. Don't happen that way on the 705, at least I haven't figured it out yet. Thanks for the input.

Thank you for answering my question, it helps a lot. I am starting to understand this more but am still a little unclear on the LFE channel side of this. I looked up the specs on my speakers like you did and I see where you are getting those numbers from and your logic makes sense to me, however with the LFE channel what does switching it from 80 to 120 actually do? I guess the reason this is confusing me is because on any old receivers i had you would set the LFE and i dont remember being able to set the speakers except for small and large. I always assumed that if i set the sub to 80 anything below 80 went to the sub and over 80 went to the speakers. Is that not how it actually works?
either way i am going to set it up like you suggested and listen to it. I want to see if i can hear a difference. I am just really starting to get into the audio side of home theater.
CyberPete 08-23-07, 02:54 PM COuld it be that you have HDMI Audio out set to YES. If so, set it to OFF.
This is my newbie post. Sorry if these questions have been asked before.
My config is as follows:
HDMI 1: HD Cable/DVR
HDMI 2: Toshiba upconverting DVD
Component 1: XBOX 360
OPT1: XBOX 360
I get sound from my cable box to both TV speakers and surround speakers (Polk RM7200) with HDMI audio set to YES
From HDMI 2 and OPT1, I do not get sound to my TV.
In the case of my DVD player, I thought HDMI audio was set to yes and still no sound to TV.
With my XBOX 360 using OPT1, what are the necessary settings to get sound to my TV?
Also, on HDMI 1, the sound is out of sync between surround speakers and TV speakers. I tried playing with the audio delay (not sure if this is the correct term?) but I could't get the sound to sync. Any suggestions?
BTW, i do not think my 2-year old Panasonic supports lip-sync.
Any advice would be very much appreciated.
Jeremy Anderson 08-23-07, 04:08 PM I guess the reason this is confusing me is because on any old receivers i had you would set the LFE and i dont remember being able to set the speakers except for small and large. I always assumed that if i set the sub to 80 anything below 80 went to the sub and over 80 went to the speakers. Is that not how it actually works?
Normally, you would just have LARGE or SMALL for the speakers. This usually translates to Large meaning you have full-range speakers, meaning no bass is redirected to your subwoofer from the other channels, leaving your sub to reproduce only the low frequency effects channel. Small would normally mean that bass below a certain point (usually 80Hz on most gear that doesn't let you select the crossover point) would be gradually phased out of the speaker and into the subwoofer. On some receivers, you had the option of choosing the crossover point to the subwoofer (the subwoofer setting you mention above)... but this did not affect the LFE channel (the ".1" in 5.1 - so named because it only contains one-tenth of full range sound, i.e. 20-120Hz).
With the 705, you have an option to set each speaker's crossover point to the sub instead of just large or small, which is a more flexible arrangement and lets you compensate for the different specs of different speakers. However, the 705 also lets you put a filter on the LFE channel, essentially cutting off anything above that point. Unlike the filters on the main speakers (which create a gradual transition), the LFE cutoff is a brickwall filter that kills anything above that point and doesn't affect any of the redirected bass from the other speakers. In other words, if you had a speaker set to 120Hz and the LFE cutoff set to 80Hz, the receiver would kill anything in the LFE channel above 80Hz but still redirect the bass below 120Hz in a main channel to the subwoofer. Normally, you don't need to use this, since the LFE channel doesn't contain any audio data above 120Hz anyway, which is why I set mine to 120Hz.
So why is the option there? Well, human hearing differs. Some people can localize low frequencies at a higher frequency than others. The THX suggestion of an 80Hz brickwall filter on the LFE is there for two reasons: 1) to reduce localization of any 100-120Hz sound in the LFE channel that would call attention to your sub, and 2) to prevent mid-bass hum (though God knows why you'd have that problem).
Having these items independently selectable is simply a matter of flexibility. I still recommend setting the LFE cutoff to 120Hz, then setting the crossover points of each speaker roughly an octave above each speaker's -3dB point.
As an explanation (since I'm typing this much anyway), the crossover point for each speaker is the point where the subwoofer and speaker are basically handling equal amounts of bass information (which is why any speaker out of phase with the subwoofer at the crossover frequency will cancel those frequencies out). Your speaker will actually start to transition to the sub well above that crossover point. If I recall correctly, most AVRs use a 4th order Linkwitz-Riley filter, meaning the transition occurs at 24dB/octave. That's why I recommend giving each speaker an octave or so to make that transition smoothly, below which the speaker's natural rolloff shouldn't be noticeable.
(Wow... I answered the hell out of that question. Sorry... bored at work!)
Thanks Jeremy,
The above explanation was immensely helpful to me (a noob). I just bought a pair of B&W N805s to connect to the 705. I will be adding a sub to this set up. How do I find out the crossover frequency for these speakers? What exactly does setting above an "octave" mean? Like I said, I really am a noob and would be thankful for your explanation.
outlanderbz 08-23-07, 05:10 PM Jeremy, that answered my question perfectly. Just when you think you know a lot about something you learn a lot more. Thank you so much for the time you put into explaining that. I can hardly wait to go home and "test" some more with my settings.
I am really enjoying my new speakers and onkyo 705.
Jeremy Anderson 08-23-07, 07:49 PM Thanks Jeremy,

How do I find out the crossover frequency for these speakers? What exactly does setting above an "octave" mean? Like I said, I really am a noob and would be thankful for your explanation.
Well, I just went to B&W's website and looked at the specs for the N805s. It says "Frequency response 49Hz - 22kHz ±3dB on reference axis".
That means that at 49Hz, your speaker's response has rolled off 3dB.
An octave is the space between a given note and the note half or double that note's frequency. In other words, if we're talking 50Hz, an octave above that would be 100Hz and an octave below would be 25Hz. Now, when we're talking about setting the crossovers, an octave above is NOT a hard fast rule. It's just a guideline based on the slope of the crossover being used (in this case, 24dB per octave). In general, I use that rule as a starting point for evaluation of different settings.
However, here's the thing: 24dB per octave is a fairly steep slope and in-room response for speakers is usually better than the advertised specs, so you can usually get away with setting your crossover a little lower than an octave above. For instance, my Polks hit their -3dB point at 59Hz. However, setting them to 120Hz crossover (roughly one octave up), while giving a nice smooth transition from speaker to sub, would risk localization of bass to the sub instead of the speaker itself. Therefore, I started at 100Hz, ran bass sweeps, set to 80Hz, ran bass sweeps, and finally determined that 80Hz (1/3 octave up from the -3dB point) gave me a smoother transition with minimal dropoff below the crossover point. In-room response with my Polks is actually a little better than the specs say, which is likely why the Audyssey setup sees them as full range, which they certainly aren't.
Now, you may ask why you don't set the crossover point exactly to your speaker's -3dB point. The reason you don't want to do that is because doing so interferes audibly with the intended effect of the crossover. This is because at the crossover point, the sub is still only doing roughly HALF of the bass reproduction... and at an octave below that point, the sub is doing roughly 24dB more than the speaker, etc. The problem is that this 24dB difference may actually end up being greater, because your speaker won't be able to maintain frequency reproduction at an octave below its -3dB point. For instance, if your speaker's -3dB point is 60Hz and at 30Hz your speaker puts out say 20dB less than that, the sub would have to do roughly 44dB more at 30Hz to maintain a flat response instead of the intended 24dB. In my opinion, this is one of the reasons a lot of people like the sound of a house curve with their subwoofers (i.e. a frequency response that gets gradually higher with lower bass) - because it compensates for the dropoff caused by setting system crossovers too low.
Now, an advanced system like the Audyssey takes some of this into account, which is why it tends to use higher crossover points than most people think it should. It's detecting the dropoff point of your speaker and setting for the smoothest transition between speaker and sub. The problem in my case lies with Onkyo's implementation of Audyssey, which basically seems to detect anything that can maintain flat response down under 80Hz as a full range speaker, which is something Audyssey has confirmed in other threads here.
In any case, I would try 100Hz for those B&W speakers if Audyssey detects them as anything higher (or as in my case, as full range speakers). And honestly, I would even recommend trying 80Hz, since in-room response will compensate a bit. Also, if the subwoofer you get has any kind of low pass filter, set it to its highest point. Otherwise, the crossover in your receiver will interfere with the filter on the sub (an effect known as "cascading"), requiring the Audyssey setup to do more equalization than the room may actually need (and possibly more than it is capable of if there's a big enough gap in frequency response).
(Disclaimer: The above is an EXTREME simplification of how crossovers work to illustrate the point, and doesn't take into account things like 12dB/24dB crossovers that are used in some AVRs, etc. Also, I'm not claiming to be an audio expert by any means, and am just sharing things I've learned from years of culling information from forums such as these.)
Tim Sly 08-23-07, 08:40 PM I am seeing a lip sync problem on my sources whether is it Directv or DVD/HD-DVD. The audio is ahead of the video. I am using HDMI for both, of course the video is passed through unaltered. (HD-A2, HR20 to Sanyo Z3 projector.)
And is it worse on some sources, like TNTHD movies last night the sync was way off and was unwatchable. It is a less degree on other channels and on DVD.
I don't know that it is a problem from the 705 or that any setting would help, because I think it was mentioned that your display would have to be compliant with that feature?
Is it possible that having a 25' cable to the projector(+ 6' to the 705) would delay the video so that the sound is ahead of it?:(
vancamp 08-23-07, 10:20 PM Yep - that's what I am saying. Now we know at least one feature that 605 has and 705, 805, 875 do not! ;)
Are you sure of this? The 705 manual (page 27) shows Component still also being passed through when HDMI Monitor is set to "Yes" (as well as being converted to 720P on the HDMI output). In that case, it shows Composite and SVideo also being passed through on their own outputs, but only being upconverted onto the HDMI (not Component) output.
When HDMI Monitor is set to "No", it shows no HDMI being passed through at all, but the Composite and SVideo are converted to Component.
As long as you had an HDMI monitor, it looks like setting HDMI Monitor to "Yes" would be best and you'd still be able to pick up the Component signal if needed (but it would have to be sourced as Component).

I just confirmed this. On my 705, the component input goes dark when HDMI Monitor is first set to "Yes", and I lose the OSD. However, on going back to that input, I've found that 480i and p sources (minus the OSD) are displayed over component. The 705 does not appear to deinterlace 480i over component when HDMI Monitor is on, so this has to be done in the source, an outboard scaler, or the display.
Is anyone else out there trying to use the 705 as an HDMI repeater attached to an HD Fury HDMI-RGBHV adapter? I can't get a good HDMI connection between the Fury and my new 705. My setup works perfectly with a Monoprice HDMI switcher between my sources and the Fury attached to our older CRT RPHDTV. However, when the 705 is installed in place of the switcher the sources see the 705 but there isn't a good link between it and the Fury. Everything else is the same including the cables used. I'm considering placing the switcher between the 705 and the Fury to see what happens as the switcher has an amp in it to boost the HDMI signal over longer distances. Any suggestions?

Hi Tim, you can set lip sync or audio delay for each input source in setup - Source. I felt mine was off on cable by about -10 msec. Looks OK now. TNT is a bear, the 805/875 crowd constantly brings up TNT and sync issues. I'm not sure anyone has found a way to get that station right. Its a head end issue for the cableco.

What I think is happening is that you are getting 2.0 channel PCM, not MCH PCM. Cycle through your display and see what it says. Unless it says MCH PCM its 2 channel. Neural will do 5.1 for a 2 channel source and 7.1 for a 5.1 source.
In your assignments, be sure that you don't have Spdif assigned to say DVD and then have that set to PCM. I wouldn't use a digital connection from the A2 anyhow, except for HDMI.
The "set the bitstream to PCM" thing is a workaround for bass management issues in the Toshiba line over HDMI and analog. Since the 705 will apply bass management & Audyssey to MCH PCM material, its really a non-issue for the 705 a big issue for the 605.

I think you're on the right track with a boost in the signal however one of the joys and not-so-hidden pleasures of HDMI is that its a crapshoot that anything will work together
Just to clarify your comments on the component thing in my own mind, when you say "The 705 does not appear to deinterlace 480i over component when HDMI Monitor is on" are you talking about component to component or component to HDMI. If the latter, it should de-interlace 480i material.

I noticed the same thing,
rutlian 08-24-07, 12:02 PM I also played gladiator and can't access the thxneural7.1? I played it with my hd a2 and had my a2 setup to pcm under spidf or whatever. Should I leave it to bitstream and under the hdmi output set to auto?
And with my panny bd10a under Audio setup I set everything with PCM even the DD and DTS. Should I set up my panny's DD and DTS to bitsream and the rest is PCM?
Why I dont get anything from my subwoofer? I read the manual it says about double bass. Set the wubwoofer ''YES'' and the front channels must be in full band and then set up double bass? is this the answer to get signal from my subwoofer? It's was too late lastnight so I went to bed without trying this just want to get some heads up before I try it later.
mrgribbles 08-24-07, 12:12 PM Hi Peter. Read post # 484, 3 or 4 up, for question #1 :)
#2 - DD and DTS to bitstream, THD and DTS HD to PCM - Make sure that you're getting MCH PCM.
Double bass is available if you have "full band" fronts. typically full band are 40 hz and below. The vast majority of fronts/mains are not full band. If yours are, I'm in envy.
If your sub doesn't appear to be performing like you think it should, it could be because of your PCM/bitstream setup. When you start getting DD 5.1 or MCH PCM tracks the sub should come on. Also, check your speaker config. There are plenty of reports that Audyssey is setting subs @ -15 dB or even lower. Good luck.

am I right? and we still get it to hear this new codecs?

Right on target. You'll see MCH PCM 5.1 or so. You be gettin the good stuff!
mrlaudermilk 08-24-07, 12:42 PM Is anyone running an Xbox 360 with HD DVD add-on via component to the receiver then HDMI out to the tv? I am just wondering if anyone notices any degradation of the signal. I know that it will only come out at 720p, but that doesnt matter to me since my tv is 720p native. I want to get an ISF calibration on my tv, but I only want to do one input. Thanks.

I read that these are great speakers. Congrats. They certainly fulfill the "full band" criteria. Are you running these in Double Bass mode??

I have 5.1 sattelites speakers rm7500 I don't think is a full band. Is the default from 705 speaker setting is on full band?
how can I have signal from my subwoofer, I like using my sub, with my old onkyo all I have to do set the speaker size in small and then my sub will have signal. And I was reading the manual I thought that if set up my speakers to 80 hrz I will have signal from sub but still nada. Now what else can I do?

I am pretty sure I am getting DD 5.1 or MCH PCM tracks but for some reason
still nothing is coming out from my subwoofer. I have not tried the audessey.
I have my speaker set to 80 (thx) on all channels and subwoofer is in YES mode, I even change my sub with the one I am using in another room still nada.
rutlian 08-24-07, 01:56 PM If I dont have a full band fronts and if I do manually set up the double bass anyway just to have signal from my subwoofer is that something risky like short circuit, safety is one I am concern.

Does anyone use the phono input for a turntable?
Is the input good? I might pick up a 705 so I can save money on not buying a preamp for a yet unpurchased turntable.
Thanks
