That along with the fact that I can get a good discount through work are the main reasons this is what I am looking at getting. Dankir 08-07-07, 03:38 PM What are the official prices and what are the cheapest you guys are getting it for? RAVEN56706 08-07-07, 03:42 PM well...ABT is selling it for a super great price.... you might want to check them out.... SupaKats 08-07-07, 03:46 PM MSRP is $899 I believe but if you search you can get it cheaper. warlord260 08-07-07, 03:59 PM i received my 705 fri, 8/3 took back 605 with speaker popping. 705 is perfect,a true pleasure, everything i was hopeing for. have about 35 hrs. on the 705. no heating issues, popping problems, etc. SirDracula 08-07-07, 04:22 PM i received my 705 fri, 8/3 took back 605 with speaker popping. 705 is perfect,a true pleasure, everything i was hopeing for. have about 35 hrs. on the 705. no heating issues, popping problems, etc. How hot does it get compared to the 605? captive 08-07-07, 04:37 PM i received my 705 fri, 8/3 took back 605 with speaker popping. 705 is perfect,a true pleasure, everything i was hopeing for. have about 35 hrs. on the 705. no heating issues, popping problems, etc. Oh please for the love of god dont let me 705 have popping issues. timfitz99 08-07-07, 04:38 PM ABT is selling it for $719, but they don't have any in stock and don't expect them til the end of the month. Circuit City also is selling for $719, but have none in stock. I'm considering CC with the additional 10% off in store coupon, should counter the sales tax. captive 08-07-07, 04:53 PM OH HELL YES!!! Im on the phone with JR right now and my rep told me they have it in stock and since i placed a preorder a long time ago he is upgrading my shipping and that i should have it this friday. /happy dance. osirus100 08-07-07, 05:55 PM I got my 705 last weekend from Video Only in Seattle and so far everything has been working great. The unit doesn't seem to run that hot (mine gets a bit warm) and I've experienced zero popping issues. Now, I don't have a PS3 and I hear that's where most of the users have heard popping so I won't know for sure if popping has been solved until I hook up an HDMI 1.3 source. I ran into some video upconversion issues through my xbox but that was mostly because the component->HDMI maxes out at 720p and I was running my xbox at 1080p. For awhile I was getting no video at all even though it still should have outputted at 720p. Sad to say I'm unable to play guitar hero on it due to a slight, but still noticable, lag in the audio. Reducing the A/V sync to 0 ms doesn't solve this problem so I guess I'll have to live by running the xbox directly to the TV. thespecialist 08-07-07, 06:22 PM ABT is selling it for $719, but they don't have any in stock and don't expect them til the end of the month. I am not sure if it matters who you talk to at ABT, but I ordered today and was told the 705 would be shipped 3-5 business days...I was quoted two different prices as well, due to the fact that my first call got disconnected. The price I received was less than that mentioned previously on this thread. I realize there is no price talk, so if anyone wants the price I got it for and the sales person I talked to feel free to PM me. Although I do not own Xbox I believe 805 owners were talking about a fix for this somewhere within Guitar Hero's A/V adjustments and that seemed to solve the problem? billymerritt 08-07-07, 06:57 PM for the users with the 705, is there a popping issue with your speakersIt is according to the loudness setting of the 705 or the 805 which I returned today. When volume is set like when playing a movie loud, but not extreme, the speakers make a popping sound. This happens when PS3 starts to play movie for a split second. Then if you decide to stop movie and restart from where it stopped happens again. When movie is over and you just stop disc play altogether with the PS3 get same pop again. If you lower the volume about 10 to 15 db. lower it sounds more like a click instead of a pop. I just starting muting the volume for my own preference. It is not so bad as to cause damage to speakers, but is very annoying. My Toshiba HD-A2 sounds more like a medium click and not pop sound like the PS3. On the upside my Oppo 981 has no click or pop at all, of course the sound is bitstream instead of PCM, except for SACD using PCM and no pop. Maybe it's the PS3 but the Toshiba HD-A2 does it too, but not near as loud, much more forgiving. After a bit more testing, it's not all that bad, just take some getting use to and the sound once a movie is in progress is FANTASTIC. The 705 in all other respects is a winner for me, so a little pop with PS3, (which Onkyo web site FAQ) say is normal and not a defect. Things I tried to eliminate problem, or I should say annoyance: 1. Turned off the Audyssey EQ (helped on the 805 made no difference on 705. 2. Changed crossover settings for speakers with many different settings. 3. Checked all my audio settings of PS3 and Toshiba HD-A2. 4. Swapped 3 HDMI cables on my PS3. 5. Swapped 3 HDMI cable on Toshiba HD-A2 6. Said a prayer! 7. The Man upstairs told me to just live with it! SirDracula 08-07-07, 07:12 PM This happens when PS3 starts to play movie for a split second. Tim Sly 08-07-07, 08:33 PM Some people are really getting hosed around by the companies selling the 705. 1Call will refuse to pricematch unless the other company has the sale price on their website AND they have it in stock. Others said the same thing. The problem is, many are advertising it but few actually have it in stock. Amazon sells it at the higher price but it is actually through 1call. Sounds like J&R just got it in stock. B&H has it in-stock but only $5 cheaper than 1call. ABT had it in stock last night when I ordered mine but said they would probably be sold out by today, which it seems they are. Crutchfield gave me a deal between ABT's and 1call's price but that went to backorder so I cancelled there and ordered from ABT. UPS on my order says they received shipping notice and ABT said I should get it by Friday. Ships from Chicago which isn't that far away. Hope you guys have luck in getting one soon at a good deal. I really wanted a silver one but didn't want to wait any longer so I grabbed a black one while I could. Very interesting. Abt quoted me a price well below what you guys are seeing. I jumped on it immediately with free shipping. The rep that took my order said it would be 10-14 days before delivery. However, I just received an e-mail from the rep who originally quoted my price and he said it should be shipping out tomorrow. Very odd. captive 08-07-07, 09:01 PM Cool... hopefully mine will ship, mine has been on preorder since 6/24! I'm calling my rep first thing tommorrow. Really? I ordered mine on 6/19, right after i saw your post in the official onkyo thread saying that JR was taking preorders. The funny part was i was just calling to see if they had gotten them in or not, and he put me on hold after taking my order number and cameback a while later and said he upped my shipping for free and that i will get it friday(at least i hope i dont have the tracking number yet). I then asked him about my parents 705 and the same deal he upped the shipping and said they should have it by friday and that the reason it took so long was so that "he saw it leave out the door." B.S. 08-07-07, 09:11 PM Bad customer service on CCs part. They should offer backorders at the posted prices. I was frustrated today by my dealings with the various big online vendors regarding the 705 with the run around and more that I was getting as I called some of them. I'd decided that the 705 (either color) really met my needs in performance, size, price and more so really wanted this model over the 805 and 605. It really fits my application perfectly. After researching THX, my room size, future room size (new house), etc, etc.....the 705 fit the bill. I was really frustrated with CC when I tried to order online, so I called their 800 number and got the run around on their great advertised online price. I talked to my wife after the incident(s) (my wife really wants a new AVR to replace the dead Sony who has given me spousal approval to purchase....she suggested I go by the CC store on the way home and see what they could/would do. After all I am a very, good customer of CC in the past two years alone I've spent thousands and thousands of dollars there as I prefer CC to BB in all regards. So I go by and tell my tale to the sales associate and he says let me look and see what I can get. My local store won't be regularly stocking the 705 (order only) but when he looked in the system they had @ their warehouse 180 units of the 705 on hand. Yep.....180! I showed him the web price including web coupon, etc and said get me that at that price or better please. He could not do it w/o manager approval but the manager came over and punched in a password and updated the price and gave it to me for a tad under the best CC online store price! And he even apologized on behalf of the online store. So now I don't have to wait long....it's due in my local store this Thursday (8/9) morning. I don't have to worry about the Fedex/UPS delivery issues. I don't have to worry about dealing with a remote online vendor if there is a problem. I can go by CC and drop the unit on their counter if I have a problem. In total the price I paid was about $32.00 less than the total price J and R had quoted me, and J and R is out of stock and I would have had to wait. Plus the price is waaaaaaaaaaay lower than the quote ABT gave me. The morning was frustrating, even with the CC online staff. But the local CC store cam through for me.....they always have. So now do I need to get better HDMI cables? Are there HDMI 1.3 cables or do any HDMI cables do the trick? Thanks again to Artslinger who has been so kind and helpful.....I truly have a new friend there! Now I bet a bunch of thread readers will speed to their nearest CC to see if they can get this deal. ;) Please- those who have your units post more impressions/reviews. Are there any online reviews now that this unit is out? LTCJack 08-07-07, 10:22 PM I was informed by the wife yesterday that I need a smaller footprint receiver..and I stumbled across the 705...I was looking at the 875 or the Denon 3808ci. Now the wife says the AVR can't be greater than 15" deep or so. So here is my question: I am buying a 1080P plasma. The BB salesperson says that if I don't buy a 1080P receiver, it makes no sense to have a 1080P plasma. I also have a directv HD DVR, and I am buying 5 B&W CM1/CWM speakers for a 5.1 HT setup. Might get a Blu-Ray DVD player. Will the 705 work? Do I need a separate amp for the B&W speakers? . Why is the BB salesperson telling me I can't run the 1080P TV through the 705?? Please help! Need to know the pros and cons of using the 705 with a 1080P plasma, and maybe a Blu-Ray DVD player. SirDracula 08-07-07, 10:28 PM The 705 will do just fine - assuming it has no heat or popping noise issues like the 605/805. The salespeople have no clue. Definitely get a 1080p TV. Now you have to decide between LCD and plasma, but that's a different topic (FWIW, I went through the same decision a few weeks ago and got an LCD instead of plasma, the Samsung 4665F). Be aware that the Onkyos put out a lot of heat, so if you have it in an enclosed cabinet you will need a fan to pull the heat out, your wife may not be happy when it sets her brand new cabinet on fire :) LTCJack 08-07-07, 10:34 PM The 705 will do just fine - assuming it has no heat or popping noise issues like the 605/805. I am getting a plasma, becaause I like to watch sports...probably the new Panny 60", but the wife wants only a 50". Marriage sux. If the cabinet is ventilated, will it be OK? Why do the BB salespeople tell me that running the TV through a non 1080P receiver will render the TV worthless? Tim Sly 08-07-07, 10:44 PM I had a good experience getting a deal at Crutchfield on the 705 but it was backordered. I cancelled yesterday and ordered from ABT. Now the Crutchfield rep called me back today and said they will get them in on 8/13 (Monday). I told him about the forum and he said I could give his direct number. He was very nice. Ziggy @ 1-800-388-2911 ext 3258. He said just tell him that I sent you and he can get you a deal. He came down in price after I told him about other deals. Good luck. B.S. 08-07-07, 10:47 PM Why do the BB salespeople tell me that running the TV through a non 1080P receiver will render the TV worthless? Because in my experience the BB lot are way undertrained and even the way BB hooks up and displays their televisons tells you a bit about how serious they are are really being a great electronics retailer. I always think of the BB staff as "blue shirted aisle trolls" just there to make sure you buy something, anything. I think the 705 willl run your upcoming B&W speakers fine. I've been using much lesser powered amps on my B&W's with great success. I've had an earlier Onkyo and more recently a Sony 5.1 unit running mine and they've been fine. The 705 will likely exceed your expectations. My first amp was an Onkyo and it was the longest running most trouble free amp I've ever owned. Actually, I sold it and a matching tuner this past weekend (both still working like new) to a guy after 19 years of regular use. Onkyo generally makes nice, nice gear. Tim Sly 08-07-07, 11:03 PM Does anyone know if the 705 has a "hidden menu" like the 805? and do you access it the same way as the 805? such as: "Based on previous posts in this thread, to access the hidden menu: press & hold AUX on the AVR and push the power/standby button concurrently on the 805" captive 08-07-07, 11:05 PM The date difference was that I received an email saying J&R was taking preorders and I let everyone on the forum know. Bill Great Bill, glad everything worked out. :) B.S. 08-07-07, 11:31 PM Artslinger, Yeah, I'll be glad to get my AVR problem resolved and get a new, working unit in place. My wife is really missing not having the surround amp running (were using the TV's onboard speakers :( so she has been pushing me to make a decision and thus pruchase something). I'm glad I did not have to resort to buying an 805...I know it would have been overkill for my needs and probably given me other problems due to its size and heat issues. I'm sure that it gets confusing and hectic for the online vendors when an exciting, desirable, new product hits the streets. So, I'm sure that I'll give online vendors a shot again, down the road, when another need arises. Hopefully next time I need another item there won't be such a large amount of confusing, and varied information on pricing floating around, and that also next time that I need a product the availablity is better. I suspect that the high demand has caught Onkyo and others by surprise. However, it does look like most people who have recently ordered new equipment online are going to see their gear shortly.....and that fact alone is a testiment to some good service. I hope you see your item soon....sounds like the vendor you used is taking care of things. How and what do we need to change in the hidden menu of the 705 (so SD is converted to 720p but 1080i signals are sent directly to the TV (or passed through the 705))? It sounds like we will need component from the cable box to the 705, hdmi from cable box to tv, and hdmi from 705 to the tv. When you change from a SD channel to HD channel I assume you need to change the inputs via the remote. Is there any way to automate this? I currently have Comcast HD service. Thanks, Marc warlord260 08-08-07, 02:30 PM i also have comcast hd box. i went box to tv hdmi ,opt. for soundto 705. then went component from box to 705 assigned it dvr. u have to get into secret menu to select 720p. it is kind of a pain to select different inputs tv, but i get use to it. also this way i can watch tv without rec. on. i assigned sound cab/sat, and like i said comp.in from box dvr. tv inputs 1,2. i hope this helps, my typing awful. warlord260 08-08-07, 02:34 PM i think it was power-aux. for secret menu. but u should check a prev. post for this, because if u push power and the wrong button it will clear all setting. then u have to run adussy again warlord260 08-08-07, 02:37 PM raven56706, if all hdmi in, and hdmi out it will be passthrough SaltDoc 08-08-07, 02:38 PM just ordered the 705 from CC online - can't wait to get it. hopefully it and my new ascend speaker set up will arrive at the same time! thanks for all the info - we'll see if it has enough power that i don't need to upgrade. i'm optimistic. oh and raven, so ps3 and xbox elite eh? very nice. i have a ps3 and have been wanting an elite.... maybe into the new year. What popping issues with the PS3 are you referring to? It is known that the Onkyo receivers pop when changing audio formats. The PS3 seems to exhibit this more prominently than other devices but it shouldn't be popping during a game or while a movie is playing. RAVEN56706 08-08-07, 03:48 PM if thats the case, then i shouldnt have a problem... i thought it happens during a movie or watching tv warlord260 08-08-07, 04:01 PM if it pops during playback, then u have a bad receiver. my 605 had speaker popping during playback. has anyone heard of someone that has gotten a bad 705? onkyo service basically told me it wouldnt be an issue with 705. from what i understood thx doesnt like to put their name on bad products. Rinzen 08-08-07, 04:30 PM Taken from the Onkyo site: "Is it normal to hear a noise on some newer models during playback of some HD DVD and Blu-ray discs? With some HD DVD and Blu-ray discs, a noise may be heard during playback. This may occur when the audio format changes during playback, it is not a malfunction." Im waiting on you guys who actually have the receiver to make comments on the popping issue with the PS3. Im planning on paying international shipping on this baby, but Im waiting to see more comments on it. RAVEN56706 08-08-07, 04:35 PM well i had an onkyo receiver for 5 years all thx receivers and none were bad milkfilk 08-08-07, 04:46 PM How hot does it get compared to the 605? I am wondering how it compares in general. I know there's a massive price difference between the 605 and 705 maybe due to the THX certification. I don't want to go nuts on a receiver but I'm interesting in some of the 705's features. Some things I've noticed: - The 705 has 3 HDMI inputs and the 605 has 2. I will use 2 right away but eventually I can see myself using 4 so then I'm back to researching HDMI switches or directly connecting to the TV. - The 705 has THX cert which I don't care about. - The biggest mystery is that the 705 has powered Zone 2. The 605 does not. Let explain why I care about how the 705 apparently runs its second zone. I want to use the second zone in the same room (iTunes + PS3 etc). Currently I'm using a Mackie mixer into my PC which is craptasically hacky but provides a super awesome multimedia experience. If someone jumps on iChat or I get another notification beep, it just mixes into my cinema experience. Purists might gag at this concept but I find it very suitible to the "convergence thing". Home theater amps don't venture into this "mixer" arena at all, I've looked forever. Home theater is about one input, one output. But in recent years there's been a bunch of multi-zone receivers out there that I could use in an unintended way. What I'm planning to do to meet my "mix" need is put the 2nd zone in the same room as the 5.1. iTunes and other PC sounds will be stereo most of the time anyway and it beats having a studio type mixer thrown into a home theater space. I'm just going to put the 2nd zones speakers next to the L&R of the 5.1 speakers. But back on topic, I'm wondering what the alternative is to the 705's powered 2nd zone? Can you buy the Onkyo 2 channel amp and power stereo speakers with the 605? How do people use HDMI pass throughs or pre-outs with an external amp? The 705 might be worth it just for the powered Zone 2 and the extra HDMI port and forget reading about how to use a straight-up amplifier. Indycanard 08-08-07, 07:36 PM I've been researching and lurking here for quite a while. I've decided on the 705s for many reasons, and look forward to ordering it. I have a 20% off full order coupon code from Crutchfield (I received after my first order with them). I do not see any exclusions for Onkyo, so I'm going to use it when I get my 705s from then. Obviously, 20% off the MSRP isn't ($799-$160=$639) too bad of a deal, but I'm guessing that once they start shipping, they will have a more competitive price, then I can take 20% off that. Do any of you have any idea when the 705s will drop in price (below MSRP anyway) at Crutchfield (or with the other dealers..) I "chatted" the other day on-line with them, and they did not seem to want to talk below MSRP. That seemed odd. Not that it matters but my sources are: * an old DirectTV S-Video out * a region free PAL/NTSC DVD player with component out * A Media Center PC using a DVI to component cable. If the Onkyo can pass all of these trough HDMI as well, I won't need to spring the extra cash on a long component out and s-video out. That would be sweet! I am somewhat concerned that in the manual they recommend that you turn it off. What exactly does it do to the video? Thanks. I don't think OSD works over HDMI at all, regardless of the resolution. The HDMI seems to be a repeater/pass through so the receiver is not messing with the signal trying to insert its own OSD. I believe the same may be true over component hookup. I know that on my 605 I don't get OSD over HDMI and if I hit the Setup button, then the resolution switches to 480p and all I see is the setup menu, it's not overlaid. It can convert the analog sources to HDMI, but I don't think the quality of the conversion is very good at all. I have my TiVo hooked up to the TV directly via S-Video as the image going through the 605 S-video and then out on the HDMI was worse. Also, note that 1080i component gets converted to 720p over HDMI, which may be OK for some applications. I'd say first try it with a short set of cables and see which hookup you prefer. Doesn't HDMI repeater/pass-through mean that the signal just passes through the receiver HDMI from the source to the display device without any alteration? Maybe the 705 is different from the 605 though the spec lists it the same as "HDMI V1.3 repeater" SirDracula 08-09-07, 06:59 PM Here's what the 705 manual says about OSD (page 93): These settings determine how the operation details are displayed. Immediate Display This preference determines whether operation details are displayed onscreen when an AV receiver/AV amplifier function is adjusted. On: Displayed (default). Off: Not displayed. Even when On is selected, operation details may not be output if the input source is connected to a COMPONENT VIDEO IN or HDMI IN. So it doesn't sound like you get any overlaid OSD when using a component or HDMI source. Urza 08-09-07, 11:34 PM Walked right in to a CC and got a great price today. NO popping issues and have left it running for hours. Nice little receiver. B.S. 08-10-07, 07:04 AM The size is right, the power is right, set up was easy.....though it took me a while. I've still got some tweaking to do but right out the door I could tell it has a way better surround quality than my previous AVR had been capable of delivering. Of course time has passed and I suppose that my 4 -5 year only dead receiver had been passed up technologically. When I first got the speaker's setup last night and finally got to turn it on to actual programming I was amazed. A HD version of Battlestar Gallactica was on and the characters walking around in the room on the show sounded as if they were in my living room with me. The Audiissey setup routine seems to work pretty well. No popping at all so far.. timfitz99 08-10-07, 09:55 AM From those of you who already have the 705 and played with it, any issues with the heat? NO POPPING, however, during my 3 hours usage. It's far hotter than the 605. Other comments, it feels like a big upgrade to the 605 as far as features go. There are way more sound/video options to modify in the setup menu (which DOES work over HDMI) with the much nicer controller (which IS backlit, contrary to some previous posters). I love all the new THX modes. You can overlay 7.1 on pretty much anything. There are specific THX 7.1 modes for games, cinema, etc., and each one comes in both Dolby Digital and DTS flavors. I look forward to experimenting. One weird thing, the Audyssey took me a few tries to get working, claiming there was too much ambient noise. The house was completely quiet except the the house's air conditioning system, which is pretty darn quiet too. So, I had to turn off the A/C (summer in Texas, not fun) to get the Audyssey to work. After that, no more problems. That said, I'm pretty impressed that the Audyssey on this one (compared to the 605, which maxes at 3) can take up to 8 listening areas into account for its measurements. The "Calculations" mode, though, even for 3 areas, takes a looong time (seemed like 8-10 minutes). I'll report more after the more extensive testing I do over the weekend, but in short, I highly recommend this over the 605, and will be returning my 2-week old 605 to Circuit City today. : ) Artslinger 08-10-07, 10:15 AM Nice to read the controller is backlit, this is also the Onkyo learning controller is that correct? SirDracula 08-10-07, 10:18 AM I decided to go with a Denon AVR-3808ci instead of my problem 605. I did not want to take another chance with an Onkyo, though I love the sound of the 605, I'm sure the 705 and up are even nicer. I've had good luck in the past with Denon, I hope this one is not going to disappoint me. Now that you're saying the 705 runs even hotter than the 605, I'm glad I didn't try a 705. I just think the Onkyo runs way too hot, between the LCD TV and the Onkyo 605 the room is the hottest in the house, I have to crank up the A/C while watching a movie and everyone in the house in the other rooms freezes! Of course, this is then good in the winter, you can leave it on all the time with some background music :) If it also made cool air in the summer, I'd be all over Onkyo. captive 08-10-07, 11:03 AM For anyone who has the 705, does it tell you how many channels of PCM its recieving from a source like the PS3? All this True HD receiver buzz has be ready to pounce on one of these new Onkyo receivers to. I am in the 605, 705, 805 budget. I hear internal component quality wise the 805 is better but the mounting options and overheating issues have me looking more at the 705. Before I make the plunge I would greatly appreciate answer to a few questions I have that seem like red flags to me. I own a (pre-elite) xbox 360 so I only have component output. I just want to confirm that even if I get into the secret menu the best I can hope for is to be downconverted from 1080p component to 720p hdmi output. Is this correct? Or if there a way to make that signal output to 1080p hdmi also? I heard the 805 pops a lot and the 605 too. I heard nothing about popping on 705, but logic would tell me that probably does too. Has anyone detected any popping or clicking? On the same topic I heard ps3 owners with this 805 get popping all the time, is this true? If its kinda true please explain when it happens. I am a gamer and a movie watcher so if this receiver takes away from my experience it might be better to wait for the next manufacturers to haul out the true hd receivers (I hope thats not true cause i waited a long time already) On the 360 being downconverted if thats true I will just keep component running to my tv and use optical to output directly to the receiver. RAVEN56706 08-10-07, 06:20 PM ok.... let me give my take on the 705.... its the best receiver for the money... Following components i used for testing: PS3 XBOX 360 Directv HR20 HD DVR Setup: Setting up was easy... plug plug plug and play.... thats it...the settings for the tones i fixed and the bass and treble. The ohms and other audiophile stuff was difficult for me so i didnt touch that. Testing: PS3: X-men 3: DTS HD Master Audio sound was freaking awesome... such great detail and crisp sound. I played the part in the movie when they all fought at Jeans house. The video detail was great too. i tried to play around with the settings and i changed it to THX sound with the HD Master audio settings it was just as good. Pearl Harbor: Uncompressed 5.1.... great sound.. not as good as the DTS HD but still up a level from what i had before. Some people say that couldnt notice the difference from other settings. Believe me the sound is different. Crisp , clear and detailed. Black Hawk Down: Uncompressed 5.1... also great sound.... another upgrade from what i had before. The shooting of the guns kept you thinking you were in freaking battle. XBOX 360: The sound for all the hd movies were great. i wish i had the Xa2 but its still great. The THX settings help out alot with the movies. Games: The THX game setting helps out alot. Makes sound alittle more detailed but not alot. It was an upgrade dont get me wrong but not the biggest difference. Directv HD Hr20: HBO: Same good stuff... nothing different. The audio is alittle louder now but i think its from the settings i need to play around Popping Issues: PS3: now i wasnt understanding here what the popping issue was. I found out at the end of turning the system off i heard the one pop...... so if thats the popping issue... i can live with that. as long as its not on the playback. 4 stars for this receiver.... nothing bad to say yet but so far i cant wait to see more movies.... for the price i paid.... this is a steal. rutlian 08-10-07, 06:28 PM ok.... let me give my take on the 705.... its the best receiver for the money... Enigma 08-12-07, 02:25 PM I got this from CC Fri; not the "ridiculous price", but cheaper than they are currently showing it via CC online (they are showing $50 off msrp; when I got it was $80 off; plus another $50 off with coupoon). I played with it for since hooking it up Fri nite. A couple of impressions: For the most part trouble free operation. Do have popping in menu's, etc w/ BD from PS3; but very moderate and tolerable (to me). No popping of any kind during normal play. Have PS3, TiVo S3, and Xbox360 Elite hooked up via HDMI; Wii hooked up w/ component. I have a 1 1/2 year old Pio plasma (5060) which doesn't accept 1080p; so I'm pretty much feeding it 1080i from most sources (the Xbox360 does 720p). I have no hdmi handshake or scaling issues. Their is a momentary delay when switching sources, etc, but no big deal. Lot's of menu options for stuff like max volume, vol on startup, etc. Pretty cool. I'm using the 705 as a pre/pro with a Sunfire 5 channel amp; in a 5.1 setup. Speakers are Revel F30 LF and RF; C30 ctr; and Linn Katan's as surrounds. Sub is a Sunfire TrueSub. No issues with heat at all in this configuration. Two issues I've noted. One I'm not sure the cause of; when feeding 480p from the Wii; eve n with the Wii setup for 16:9 the pic comes to the plasma as 4:3. Setting the display to stretch 4:3 mat'l to 16:9 fixes this; but this wasn't necessary before running the video thru the Onkyo. Not a big deal to me; but if you watch much SD and don't want the pic stretched it could be. Second issue is listening to SACD from PS3. Might be just a PS3 issue; but I haven't got it to output multi-channel SACD. The Onkyo says it's receiving multi-channel, so I'm not sure what the issue is yet. Oh, I also noticed that the onscreen volume control overlay doens't seem to work with HD; only SD (unless I'm doing something wrong). Anyone confirm? Also, I ran the audessey setup. It came up with a few strange results; set all speakers to full-range; and sub distance to 24 to 30 feet (changed a bit at second setup). I manually changed the center and surrounds to "small" with appropriate X-overs; and set the sub to correct distance. Left the eq on "Audessy". Seems to sound good; but haven't had a lot of time to evauate. All in all, a good option for someone who wants a reasonably priced receiver or pre/pro with 3 HDMI inputs for sending all video out to display via 1 HDMI; and to all uncomressed audio. I have a Sunfire TG2 pre/pro which I had been using; which was severely short on features in the new HDMI world. Thanks captive 08-12-07, 02:58 PM I have 4 JBL ( CST 55 ) 8 Ohm speakers, and a center ( CSC 55 ) it is 8 Ohms as well. I can only set 6 or 4 Ohm. Will this damage my speakers? I bought a 674 3 weeks ago, but I returned it last night for the 705. The 674 had an 8 Ohm speaker setting. Am I missing something? I was confused by this as well, but in the manual it says "for speakers 6 to 16 ohms leave it at 6ohms" So you're good to go. This happened to me as well, it set all of my speakers to full range, speaker distance seemed very accurate. But it turned everything way down and for the most part they werent equal so i changed it. Enigma 08-12-07, 03:03 PM This happened to me as well, it set all of my speakers to full range, speaker distance seemed very accurate. But it turned everything way down and for the most part they werent equal so i changed it.I was a little dis-appointed that it wouldn't re-run the Audessey after I manually set the speakers (it overwrties the manual settings). So I'm really not sure whether the EQ using Audessey is accurate now that I've reset the speaker xover points. But I figured I'd leave it like this for a while to evaluate. hd nOOb 08-12-07, 05:04 PM I was confused by this as well, but in the manual it says "for speakers 6 to 16 ohms leave it at 6ohms" So you're good to go. Thanks alot, After I ran the EQ setup it did sound very low. I left the speaker distance alone and changed the level calb back to my settings taste it sounds much fuller. As I am still a little worried about the Hz and best range sounds. I guess moving to the more expensive unit requires alot more effort calibrating. I have HD DVD, so if any user have one of the Gen 2 models that would care to share there setting and thoughts. I have the A20. As well as most of you here seem to have the ps3 it puts out better sound I would also like to hear settings and thoughts from you as well. Question: Is it at all possible to recve and out any of the new codecs ( audio ) I feel like maybe there is some thing I were missing. Also if you hold down the display button it will tell you the incoming feed and the out going feed. 1080p 60--------->1080P ( thx 605 thread ) And if you hold down display as soon as the info changes press standby it will tell you firmware info ( thx 605 thread as well ) Lets try to figure this TrueHD and Master HD audio. THX mrgribbles 08-12-07, 05:38 PM A quick 705 take: Price. At CC's 4 hour price this morning, "priceless." Heat. No hotter than my 605 after 4-5 hours of medium (-22 +/-dB or so) duty use. I can keep my hand on the top of the case so its less than 130-5 deg F. Unless the bottom of the TV starts melting this is a non-issue for me anyhow. Rating A Pops. None whatsoever. Even when transitioning from rew to play on the XA2. The receiver clicking is audible but very, very faintly. A+ Audyssey. Setup values fairly different than the 605. Sounds good. Audyssey still impresses me. A SQ. I think its better than the 605. I'm not sophisticated enough to say why but it does. More detailed without being brash. Hows that for audiophilese. A+ PQ. HDMI-->HDMI. No issues. Component-->HDMI. A bit different than the 605, not better, just different. But then, I had the "hidden menu" tweaked on the 605. More news at 11, or whenever. C (For Faroudja) Post processing. Tried a handful of the available listening modes. PLIIx was fine, THX Cinema and Select2 were fine. Getting to like this Neural thing. More later. A+ DD THD and DTS HD MA bitstreaming. C'mon Toshiba, gimmee the firmware update. No rating yet. Remote Control. Is there anything it won't do? I'll be weeks figuring his badboy out. Learning too. A OSD. Still don't like that it shuts down what you're watching/listening to when in setup. No volume over HDMI-->HDMI. C Overall, very pleased with the new toy. Thank you 605 for the learning curve, it was the nines. hd nOOb 08-12-07, 06:26 PM OSD. Still don't like that it shuts down what you're watching/listening to when in setup. Urza 08-12-07, 08:57 PM I wonder if people are wigging out over the popping for nothing. From what I can tell, it only does a little pop when the sound TYPE changes. So for example, I load up POTC Curse of the Black Pearl. The menu sound is 2 ch PCM. When the movie starts up, little pop, because it switched to 5.1 multi PCM. It never pops during movie playback or anything. Enigma 08-12-07, 11:01 PM Second issue is listening to SACD from PS3. Might be just a PS3 issue; but I haven't got it to output multi-channel SACD. The Onkyo says it's receiving multi-channel, so I'm not sure what the issue is yet.Well, I think I got this to work (not sure if it's working correctly yet). Tried a few things, including changing the PS3 audio output, if you keep stereo/192 khz checked, but uncheck 5.1/192; but leave 5.1/96Khz it seems to work like I'd expect (for awhile I was getting multi-channel on both "stereo" and "multi" SACD tracks  ; depending on which boxes are checked. The other thing I learned is that depending on what listening mode is selected the Onkyo can do various things to a PCM stream (didn't try this out, really, just started playing with the surround, pure, direct buttons; and haven't figured them out yet). I did this while a DD source was on; so I'm not sure it's related to my SACD issue, I'll have to check into it further. by-tor74 08-12-07, 11:19 PM Got mine today from circuitcity for $494.99......New in box... captive 08-12-07, 11:24 PM I wonder if people are wigging out over the popping for nothing. Question: Is it at all possible to recve and out any of the new codecs ( audio ) I feel like maybe there is some thing I were missing. Lets try to figure this TrueHD and Master HD audio. THX On my XA2 I have the HDMI out set to auto. That way if a DD THD track is running it will send MCH PCM. If an SD DVD with DD or DTS 5.1 is running it will send the bitstream for the AVR to decode. Best of all worlds?? No. None of the new codecs over HDMI except as decoded PCM. Toshiba is strongly rumored to be releasing an update to accomplish this and 7.1. The THD thing is easy. THD decoded in the player and passed as PCM is the same thing as if the AVR does it. DTS HD MA is not yet fully supported in the Tosh players. Will it be? I dunno. mrgribbles 08-13-07, 07:36 AM I wonder if people are wigging out over the popping for nothing. The pop thing is real but I believe it has primarily plagued the 605 crowd. My original 605 loudly popped at random for a day or two then it went away. A study of the popping poll thread will reveal that Onkyo has owned up to this issue a couple of times although they say it is a small percentage. The poll says its more like 30+%. My brand new 705 doesn't pop one bit and I ran it through its paces with inputs that would have made it do it. In fact, the transitions from different audio feeds is remarkably transparent, the way it should be. elmer1024 08-13-07, 07:56 AM Hello 705 buyers and owners. Artslinger 08-13-07, 08:42 AM CC has the ridiculous price for the 705 back online as of early this am. Of interest is that when I opted to pick it up at a local (Atlanta, GA area) it was confirmed. I then when into store availability and it said none. Went to store and picked it up. Plugged it in and away we go. Right now its cooking off the manufacturing remnants, smells like a scorched shirt. Could be my imagination but I think it sounds better than the 605. For the price I paid its a no-brainer. Jump on it. Good to see mrgribbles on board with the 705, and his in-depth knowledge with the 605. Finally got my 705 Friday. I won't be much help for reviews since I sold my old surround speakers and I'm upgrading, right now I'm only running a 2.1 setup. There is a light pop when the AVR is changing inputs or audio signals, my older Adcom amps may be the cause of this and thanks to a forum member I can fix this by adding a decoupling cap on the input. The Onkyo 705 does seem a little bright with slightly dead middle tones, what this does though is make for good separation, surround and voice clarity, but not so good for serious music listening. I was able to correct this somewhat with Onkyos excellent manual speaker adjustments. And yes this baby does run hot. I don't see this as a problem as long as you leave plenty of space above the AVR and allow for natural air flow. elmer1024 08-13-07, 09:19 AM elmer 1024/ u should be extreamly happy with 705. i wouldnt have any doubts about that purchase, especially at that price. it is a wonderful receiver. setup is easy, i could do it, and i recently just learned to set the time on my alarm clock! sound is awesome, nothing else out there that compares and the price- remember 705 is just barely step below 805 they list about 1k. I just programmed my 659 without a problem, the only command i had to teach it was the Cbl/Satellite input. Everything else i tried works without having to teach it, pure audio, all channel stereo(i prefer this for 2 channel music), THX, surround mode. I just wish there was a button that turned neural 7.1 on without having to scroll through surround modes as so far this is my favorite source for matrixing 5.1 -> 7.1. ClayBuster 08-13-07, 07:19 PM I also missed the CC sale by about an hour I think. JR's is the next best thing I think and they can be talked out of shipping :0) Tim Sly 08-13-07, 09:26 PM One thing I noticed when reading the manual last night is that you can rename your inputs ala Marantz which I think is a awesome feature. I don't know if this is a common feature found on all AVR's nowadays but I think this is going to be my new receiver soon. Definitely in the next month or so! This is a very cool feature! So when I am watching DirecTv the display reads: DVR HR20 which I put in there. And when I am watching the HD-A2 is says: HD-DVD. Of course you can't make is say: DD TrueHD ;) Tim Sly 08-13-07, 10:16 PM What settings are you using to get Multi Channel PCM? I have a HD-A20 mine says PCM fs: 48kHz and HDMIthrough? For those of you who use the 705 with a Toshiba 2nd generation HD player here are some tips from the 805 thread on how to set up the HDMI: "Toshiba HD-A2 and the 705/ 805, make sure you set HDMI MONITOR to ON, and HDMI AUDIO to OFF; on the A2, make sure you set Audio to BITSTREAM=PCM and HDMI=PCM (or, preferably, HDMI=AUTO if you're also planning on playing SD DVDs...this way it will pass the standard Dolby Digital and DTS bitstreams of SD DVDs while passing the high-res audio tracks via PCM on HD DVDs without having to always manually change it). These settings seem to be the most common oversights with 805 owners. Congratulations on your new purchase! If using HDMI for audio you do want to set the optical output to PCM. As you discovered this is the only way to get the A2 to ouput 96k LPCM. Bizzare - yes - but that's the way it is." Tim Sly 08-13-07, 10:44 PM (Sorry for all the posts in a row but I am catching up on few days worth.) After using the 705 for a few days it is great! SOUND: Finally ran Audessey and it improved the sound quite a bit. Although the dialog still seemed muted. On my old AVR I had cracked up the center channel cause I hate having to strain to hear the voices over the background. So when I watched Sahara HD-DVD on the 705 I had to keep increasing the volume during dialog (friends were over for the movie) Later I manually set the center at -1 dB and then it was good and clear. Audessey had set the center to -5 dB and the fronts to -2 dB. REMOTE: I love the joystick in the middle- very easy to navigate when doing set up. Won't really need it cause I programmed my Harmony 659 to run the whole theater including X10 controls for the lights. I only saw a backlight on the "receiver" button but haven't played around to see if I can get all the buttons backlit. POPPING: NONE. But there is what I call a mechanical CLICK inside the 705 when changing inputs or On/Off. It is rather loud, at least much louder than my old AVR. It is a little annoying. I assume it is normal. There is no popping coming out of the speakers if that is the popping people are talking about. It is silent in the speakers when changing inputs or DVD menus. HEAT: No hotter than my old AVR. They need to give off heat so they don't burn up. HANDSHAKE: I have one issue with analog component upconvert to HDMI from my Polaroid DVD recorder to my Sanyo Z3 720p projector. I tried 480i/480p to 480p and 480i/480p to 720p but the Z3 wouldn't accept either one. I will just have to use components direct to the Z3. My other two sources use HDMI to HDMI for audio and video through the 705 without a problem. IMPRESSION: WOW. Letters from Iwo Jima sounds awesome such as when the planes fly over and drop bombs, machine guns everywhere... Sahara- dialog was low till I increased the center channel. The features and price for this unit are great. Learning curve.. there is a lot you can do and a lot to figure out. We can figure it out together. :) zoro 08-13-07, 11:17 PM I also missed the CC sale by about an hour I think. If component or HDMI did you do the correct assignments in setup? It seems that every time I do this I have to cycle through the assignments a few times to get them matched correctly, but thats me I suppose. Shouldn't be a hand shake issue with component in & out. mrgribbles 08-14-07, 07:39 AM Since I'm somewhat new to this thread, I thought I'd pass on some info from the 605 thread that should also apply to the 705. In the 605 "New Onkyo 605 Owner": Post 592 & 594 has info on video resolutions for Analog & HDMI ins & outs of the AVR and how to access the "Hidden Video Menu". There are also some work-arounds on how to set it up to use video processing or not when you choose SD material or HD material. Post 2437 and down has info on how to update the 605/705 firmware via CD. Not that we'll ever see it, but good to know. Post 2490 has some undocumented Button Combinations that you may find useful, or not. 705 owners may also find it useful to peruse or keep an eye on the 605 thread as these AVR's are very similar in operation and I would guess that much of what will be discussed here has already been hammered on over there. Good luck and remember that if you break it you own it. woots 08-14-07, 07:50 AM Just bought my 705 on CC's website $674 ... i wish i got it on sunday for the low low low price some of your guys managed to get. I picked up the unit from my local store but am leaving it the box for at least a couple of weeks, until I pick up my surround speakers purchased off Craigslist, but also in the hope that an even lower price may appear as the units reach retailers in greater numbers, since CC will match within 30 days. However, this is my question. I was reading this morning about how all television must switch to digital in 2009. Is this significant to current receivers such as the 705, because my assumption is that the signal passing through my DirecTV HR-20 to my Samsung HD DLP TV is still analog. Thanks for any info or internet references. Bob Did you buy it before 8/12. If so CC should price match their advertised price on 8/12 of less than $550. Edit; I could be wrong but I think the analog vs digital signal thing is already in place. Comcast Atlanta is 100% digital. I thought the 2009 thing had to do with SD vs HD? Maybe someone will square me away on this. Your 705 should be fine no matter what signal you'll wind up dealing with. elmer1024 08-14-07, 12:23 PM lucky you live in a no sales tax state I also live in No tax state but I bought mine for $549.00 on line last Sunday at CC. Not sure when it was so cheap one day and the next back to $749.00 It should delivered be at my house on Wenesday. Enjoy Jeremy Anderson 08-14-07, 01:08 PM I want to step up from my 603 to the 705 (mostly because I'm tired of fighting to EQ my SVS 20-39CS+ with a damn ART-351) and may snag one after work today, but I have a few questions: 1) Can you set front left and right at different distances? And does it allow for .5 increments or just whole feet? My right speaker is unavoidably 6 to 8 inches further away than the left, but the 603 only allows one setting for distance to mains. 2) Can the 705 matrix 5.1 from the analog multichannel inputs to 6.1 (like with DPL-IIx)? I'm running a Panny S97 for the occasional DVD-Audio disc. 3) Does analog multichannel get passed through equalization, crossover and delay? Wondering if I would turn off the delay times and crossover for DVD-Audio and let the receiver handle it, or just leave it as-is. 4) Does the Audyssey implementation on the 705 let you pick Flat for the EQ curve, or are you just stuck with Audyssey's rolloff of the highs? I read the user manual, but didn't see where you could choose like you can on other brands. Any answers would be appreciated. Dunno, but I would assume not on analog MCH. Yes on HDMI MCH PCM. 3. There is limited processing on analog. Sub woofer sensitivity is it. You're better off planning to make speaker adjustments at the source if permitted. Both of my DVD players have speaker setup functions. 4. Not really. If you peruse the Audyssey website they downplay the flat curve so, since we can't control it, I would suspect its doing its own thing, not flat. mrgribbles 08-14-07, 01:46 PM I can't believe I missed that sale I was mad to myself because for everyday I have been checking CC website I saw their 799.00 minus 80.00 plus another 50.00 that they have until saturday last week but I don't know why I did not check on Sunday morning and to make the matter worst I was awake since 7 am pst so I am sure if I open up my laptop I could have bought one already. I tried to post it but as you may know, the forum was down until early afternoon, EST. Sorry my friend, I did try. I just spent about 4 hours between yesterday and today with CC on the additional 10% off coupon that I was trying to get them to apply post sale. Gloat - Gloat Enigma 08-14-07, 01:59 PM In the 605 "New Onkyo 605 Owner": Post 592 & 594 has info on video resolutions for Analog & HDMI ins & outs of the AVR and how to access the "Hidden Video Menu". 705 owners may also find it useful to peruse or keep an eye on the 605 thread as these AVR's are very similar in operation and I would guess that much of what will be discussed here has already been hammered on over there.Has anyone checked to see if these features work the same on the 705? I got the CC price of 719.99 with a $50 off coupon. I got the cheapo $3.99 shipping and rec'd the unit in TWO days. I was very satisfied with my first CC online purchase. But I digress... My remote is defective. The "joystick/enter" button doesn't work. All of the other buttons are fine. I spoke with one customer service rep who made some ridiculously *stupid* recommendations. My favorite being to pack the unit back up (after I had just plugged in all of my components and speakers) and RETURN it to Circuit City. He "accidentally" disconnected me. Luckily when I called back I talked to a more competent rep. She told me to fax my receipt and other details into Onkyo for a replacement. I did this and have yet to hear back. No confirmation. No anything... Do you guys have any experience with Onkyo's customer support? If so, how would you rate them - Good, bad, or somewhere in between? I know I can hit "enter" on the front of the actual unit but I would much prefer to have a *working* remote. I have no immediate plans on purchasing a universal either. Remember, you have to use the buttons on the AVR, not the remote. Press and hold "AUX" and while you're holding AUX, press standby (Power on/off). Works every time. The menu will persist so you can go back to couch potato mode and make changes with the remote until you press set up to end the session. All that said, good luck. Edit: One last thing. The package it up and return it is their standard answer. I know of people that have bought 140 lbs of HTIB gear only to have a small glitch and instead of replacing the component, they say pack it up and return the whole thing. I think that if you yell at them long enough they'll relent and let you return the component, but it ain't easy. I have an equipment closet that puts my gear 20ft behind me in a separate room. I've been living with a receiver that doesn't do OSD over component and I'm not going to do it any more. The receiver absolutely has to be able to tell me the volume and surround format (i.e. do I have THX on or is it DD vs. DTS) over the OSD using HDMI -> HDMI and Component -> Component. I'm not terribly worried about how the OSD works for transcoding say Component to HDMI as I already have both run to my projector but like I said, I'm not buying a receiver that doesn't tell my what my volume is on the OSD when I'm watching a BD or HD-DVD. dolfer 08-14-07, 02:56 PM Dolfer, Onkyo CS has to be the worst group of Bozos I have ever had the experience to deal with. Unfortunatly it didn't solve an issue that I have, which I had thought it might. The issue is that when I have the Wii set to output 480p thru component, for some reason the Onkyo sets the aspect ratio to 4:3, even though it's set to 16:9 coming out of the Wii. I have been "re-stretching" it by setting the display for 4:3 stuff to stretch and fill the screen. Using the secret menu I can get it to upscale to 720p; but it's still squished into a 4:3 box. And my display won't let me stretch a 720p souce. So I'm back to leaving output to "auto". I don't know if I'm doing something wrong with the setup; but I can't find a place to tell the Onkyo that all output should be 16:9 (other than the OSD setup). Quatre 08-15-07, 02:03 AM Got mine today from circuitcity for $494.99......New in box... how do you get this price? the tax at CC kills it for me though maybe I can go to Deleware an hour away for tax free but not time for that. my CC didn't even have any but they can get from warehouse. if i have 4 hdmi components and this receiver only has 3 hdmi inputs, can i just use my 2 in 1 out hdmi switch to basically add a 4th hdmi input to the receiver (connect the hdmi out on the switcher to one of the hdmi inputs on the receiver and then 2 components into the 2 inputs on the switch and then obviously out from receiver to tv) will this work to basically get 2 inputs out of one of the inputs on the receiver? this wont cause any problem will it? guess i wont know till i try it. if it doens't work i guess i'll have to get the more expensive 875 with 4 hdmi inputs but then ppl say you mine as well get the 905 with reon processor (over Faroudja of the 705 and 875?) and the graphic menu display or whatever that it has. i think i'll start with the 705 to replace my old panny receiver and try the hdmi switch to add one more hdmi input on the receiver. Quatre 08-15-07, 02:21 AM I am wondering how it compares in general. The 705 might be worth it just for the powered Zone 2 and the extra HDMI port and forget reading about how to use a straight-up amplifier. the 605 can't matrix 7.1 chan surround thats why everyone got the Yamaha 661 instead for the same price range and was known as the 2 bang for buck kings with the yam edging out the onky 605 for that reason. i think the 705 can matrix 7.1 so its not a problem anymore. also why is the 705 up to $799 now on CC online and none of the ones in my area have it in store. I think there is a new $50 off coupon and you can get a 10% off with AAA. anyone know any other way to get this as cheap as possible from CC? Quatre 08-15-07, 02:26 AM Didn't you get that super low price like me? You know the price match from that early super low CC pricing. I noticed CC up the price so that must have been a pricing error on their part. I can't believe the rock bottom price I eventualy got on my 705 from J&R. wil J&R still match the previous CC price? what was the lowest it was at CC? I'm prob just going to get it from CC anyway as its easier for returns etc. being a local store. i'm sure i can find a way to get a decent price from CC even though it went up especially since my stores didn't have it in stock then though i guessi could have ordered online to get the low price from CC but yeah what ws the lowest CC had it for. might be worth try to see if J& R has record of that andmatching other ppl so they will maybe still do it and wont know that CC raised t heir price or wont care. I have a Samsung HLT dlp tv and the non HD stuff shows up in 4:3 when using the "Just Scan" picture mode or 16:9. for some commercials that are t hen done widescreen but still sd its then pillar boxed meaning black bar on all 4 sides. it sucks. you can use the wide zoom mode to stretch the picture but then turn it off when going to an sd chan or coming off sd commercial and back to hd program. I'm looking for a receiver that will upconvert via the hdmi sd channels to hd and make the picture full screen. so say you have your cable box hdmi to receiver and then receiver to tv, i know the 705 upconverts but if the picture is still 4:3 that is almost useless. so the 805 does this too? do any of the onkyo recievers upconvert the sd chans and make the 4:3 picture 16:9? if not then what brand receiver will do this when upconverting sd chans i want to upconvert sd chans to 1080p and have it make a 16:9 picture for everything when i have the tv set on "just scan" mode or 16:9. i dont ever want to see a 4:3 picture, especially since there is some bowing on 4:3 material with many of these samsung hlt models. zoro 08-15-07, 02:58 AM wil J&R still match the previous CC price? what was the lowest it was at CC? Its reason I didn't bother to go that route myself. Quite a price jump just to get that 1080p upconvert, the rest of the features I didn't need and for triple the price tag it was not worth it to me. Twice in the last few weeks CC put the 705 up for $549 (7/31 & 8/12). The price was only there for 4-5 hours or so and then they raised it back up to $769, but with a -$50 coupon. People who are registered with them (members of the club?) received an email with 10% off a single purchase over $199. The math = $494. I had previously bought a 605 from JanR for $399 and thought I did well. I don't know if the steal price with CC is a mistake or what but I hope for those with patience, it happens again. I think it was a mistake because it served no useful marketing purpose as it was not advertised or promoted. Edit: For those that aren't already signed up, I would go to the CC website and join up (I think you need to establish an account), or at least for the Email promo stuff. This way you'll get special emails on deals and discounts. mrgribbles 08-15-07, 08:04 AM Heat. Did some cursory Temperature measurements with an IR meter on the 705 last night. The unit had been on for 4 or so hours. The volume level was circa -22 dB. The ambient temperature was 79 F (Atlanta's in a heat wave and the aircon is having a time of it). The sides and back are in the mid 90's F range. The top of the case runs from 110 F to 119F except in the right rear quadrant where I got readings in the mid 130's F. For reference, I could keep my hand on it for up to 10 seconds, but I really didn't like it. Am I concerned? Not in the least. I still consider 135 F to be cool, maybe warm if I was debating the issue. Samfield 08-15-07, 08:57 AM I missed it a couple of weeks ago so like you I was looking pretty much everyday for a return of insanity. On Sunday, early am it showed up so I jumped on it. I tried to post it but as you may know, the forum was down until early afternoon, EST. Sorry my friend, I did try. I just spent about 4 hours between yesterday and today with CC on the additional 10% off coupon that I was trying to get them to apply post sale. I finally wore them down so my price is now in the under $490 range. Gloat - Gloat I happened to check CC early Sunday, on a lark. Was shocked at the price and then the additional -10%, so out the door with tax for under $530.00. Tried to post a notice to the forum as well, but couldn't. I had been waiting on the 805, but at that price I can live with the incidental performance differences. Artslinger 08-15-07, 09:26 AM Heat. I can keep my hand on the 705 without to much pain... LOL. Remeber keep at least 8-10 inches clearance from the top and if you use a enclosed cabinet keep the front doors open at least partially. I'm really not to worried about it, I have a 4 year Onkyo warranty. I purchased the 2 year extended warranty from ShopOnkyo, yeh I know warranties are a rip, but this is a complex AVR that runs hot so I wanted that extra coverage. hd nOOb 08-15-07, 11:23 AM IMPRESSION: WOW. :) As I don't have Sahara yet. I really like LFIJ. You don't hear mouch about it on these forums. The PQ is out standing but it's not in the top tier? Do you personally think the Faroudja processor ( spelling ) processor in this this is OFF THE HOOK! I truly fell I made the right purchase. I ain't made at all. :D Jeremy Anderson 08-15-07, 11:39 AM Got my 705 last night, hooked it all up, zeroed my ART-351 EQ for my SVS 20-39CS+, ran 6 positions on the Audyssey setup, and then popped in some stuff I'm used to hearing. A few observations: 1) Speaker distances, for some odd reason, all came out exactly 1 foot under physical distance. However, the differences in distance between speakers were correct and between-speaker imaging was spot on. Finally, my right main gets that half-foot bump it needs to mesh with my center channel! 2) It detected my Polk RTi28s and CSi40 as full range, which I quickly changed to 80Hz. 3) After running the Audyssey calibration, I double checked channel levels with a SPL meter. Every channel was dead on correct, and I verified same with Avia. My 603 was never able to get this right. 4) Though I have tweaked extensively with my SVS, I have NEVER gotten the tight bass sound from it that the 705 is giving me, especially with music. I ran through my usual list of Nickel Creek, Glen Phillips, Beck, Flaming Lips, etc. and suddenly bass guitar sounds like in-the-freakin'-room bass guitar. I was most impressed with the presence that piano now has, which was never there before on my 603. Also, the harshness of stringed instruments (such as those on Chris Thile's cover of White Stripes' Dead Leaves And The Dirty Ground) is absolutely gone with the 705. I do wish the 705 had the option of a flat curve like other brands' Audyssey implementation, but I do enjoy the sound. 5) Popped in The Incredibles, I Robot, Star Wars: Attack of the Clones, etc. and was impressed as hell. The rolloff of highs with Audyssey will take a little getting used to because I'm accustomed to a brighter sound from my Polks, but dialogue was definitely more intelligible and natural sounding. The real improvement, however, was in bass response. There's a newfound PUNCH, for lack of a better word, that wasn't there before, and I'm not hearing the awful 45Hz peak or 63Hz null that I had before. I'll do frequency charts this weekend to see what kind of response I ended up with on the sub, but so far I'm very happy with the sound. If the Audyssey has truly tamed my room issues with the subwoofer, I may just take the ART-351 out of the loop. 6) Sadly, I'm running my DVD-Audio via analogue cables, so no Audyssey processing is done. The result is, quite frankly, AWFUL. I may switch out for an HDMI cable just to run audio from my Panny S97. Fortunately, I don't do a lot of DVD-A listening, so this is a minor complaint. 7) I cranked up the Bioshock demo on my Xbox 360. Audio placement in surround is outstanding. Despite the rolloff of the highs that the Audyssey seems to do, placement of 3-dimensional sound from games is very precise. I jumped on some Rainbow Six: Vegas and noticed that I could actually hear someone climbing a ladder behind me from inside a building, so I was able to turn around and kill them. I'm still playing with which method of 6.1 matrixing for 5.1 sources I like best, but DPL-IIx seems to be working well with my Xbox 360 so far. Overall, I'm very satisfied with the upgrade. It is probably the best my home theater has ever sounded. Big thumbs up from me on the 705. Tim Sly 08-15-07, 11:19 PM However, this is my question. I was reading this morning about how all television must switch to digital in 2009. Is this significant to current receivers such as the 705, because my assumption is that the signal passing through my DirecTV HR-20 to my Samsung HD DLP TV is still analog. Thanks for any info or internet references. Bob Bob, nothing to worry about. You already have digital TV coming into your home from DirecTv, it is only analog after it comes out of your DirecTv receiver and if you are using HDMI then it is still digital. Those who still use rabbit ears for over the air TV will need a digital converter box by 2009 because the analog signal will be replaced with digital signals. And that doesn't mean everything will be HD, many will still be SD digital stations. Tim Sly 08-15-07, 11:28 PM IMPRESSION: As I don't have Sahara yet. I really like LFIJ. I ordered Flags of Our Fathers and can't wait to experience that. As far as the Faroudja processing, I haven't really watched many SD dvds through the 705 yet. Anyone else comment on this? I briefly checked out Gladiator SD dvd but it was through the HD-A2 over HDMI and it looked quite good. I assume this player upconverts to 1080i?? Jeremy, Nice review of the 705! Quatre 08-16-07, 01:31 AM Twice in the last few weeks CC put the 705 up for $549 (7/31 & 8/12). The price was only there for 4-5 hours or so and then they raised it back up to $769, but with a -$50 coupon. People who are registered with them (members of the club?) received an email with 10% off a single purchase over $199. The math = $494.
