View Full Version : HDMI vs Components?

Hello,
I’ve a SANYO PLV-Z5 projector with 1x HDMI input and an OPPO DVD player with 1x HDMI output. My concern is that I have a receiver without HDMI connector.
Is there a difference between HDMI and component for the picture quality? I mean does the HDMI improve the quality (or does the component reduce the quality?)
Will I see a difference if I connect my DVD player to the projector via the receiver and component cables instead of a direct connection between the DVD player and the projector with HDMI?

Thanks

If you're a true videophile, you might see a difference, or at least convince yourself that you see a difference. If you aren't completely obsessive, you should be fine with component cables. The one true reason for HDMI is copyright protection, an aside advantage is a digital to digital connection which avoids DA and AD conversion. Personally, I don't see a difference substantial enough to warrant nit picking over. I run my HD-XA2 via HDMI to my DT-500 and I use a component to VGA breakout cable for HDTV from a component video distribution amplifier.

I concur 100% with bri1270's post. Another thing you want to be mindfull of is the fact that HDMI has distance issues which effects the quaility of the image when going over 25' and component has less. Passing the Da converters is a biggie ,but not a wow factor when you compare the image quaility. I would get a 25' cable in both and see for youself. In addition....there is a gauge debate over 24 or 22 gauge HDMI cables. HMO....keep HDMI as short as you can ,and if you can't ,go with component video.

it was also noticed in the past that some projectors had better PQ using component than HDMI. So, sometimes it comes down to how the implementation of the spec was done. I usually see a difference, but depending on the source, one is always better than the other.

The PQ difference can be related to the adjustment options that are enabled with component but that are fixed when using HDMI. These subtle adjustments can sometimes make a big difference.

If upconverting standard definition dvds don't most dvd players require hdmi vs. component? If there are any hd dvd players that don't please tell me who they are. This would be the only reason I would go hdmi over component when I do jump into hd. Am I right or wrong here? I am no guru on this subject, just trying to learn. Thank you.

You are correct, there is no upscaling over component since the old zenith DVB318. Of course if your projector has a good internal scaler, this not as big an issue.

Right now, I use HDMI between my OPPO DVD player and my Z5 with upconverting set to 720p or 1080p
Does it mean I won't be able to do that with component cable????

No guru here (for a newbie at AVS) however - my question (if anyone can answer is) :

- what difference (if any) would I get from moving from Component to HDMI ???

My current situation : running a LG HDD DVD Recorder via component over 10 metres to a Panasonic AE900 - producing a 92in picture on a blank wall (sorry about my metrics :) )

The LG is able to 'upscale' to 720p and 1080i - as does the AE900.

SD DVDs are being output at 576p. Upscaling to 720p (or 1080i) must go via HDMI and not component. The picture that I get (and mind you the wall isnt that clean/fantastic) produces a great, solid quality. With HDMI cables costing in Australia around $100 for the length that I would need, I've yet to be convinced that it would be worth spending that money.

I find HDMI can be a little sharper while component is a little smoother on my setup. Try both and see which agrees with your peepers most. Both are excellent, BTW.

I remember when the Bravo D1 came out with the first DVI port on a relatively inexpensive dvd player and reviewers were seeing miraculous improvements. I think it was probably wishful reviewing :)
