I was informed by a sales supervisor that you no longer need Superfan as of 7/12/07 because they are trying hard to promote their HD service. All you need is NFL Sunday Ticket and HD Access to get all the games in HD (those that are broadcast in HD).

Here are some of her quotes: "100% sure without a doubt", "this is a change from season's past", "this is a new deal", "Superfan is now for the red zone and matrix views", etc.

She claims the reason for the confusion is due to the this being a recent change and some of their reps just are not aware at this time and some of their documentation and the website have not been updated to reflect this change.

Here is a thread I found that pretty much found the same information that I did:

Would be great if true, but by that logic, why not open up MLB Suckerfan HD now as well? I have EI. I have HD Access. I also have Nationals/Giants in HD with a 721 not authorized message.

This sounds more like Free Suckerfan (including HD) for new subs only.

I don't disbelieve what you are reporting. It's just difficult to take the word of one CSR as truth, even if it was a supervisor.

Given how new the promotion is, I'm thinking maybe it's too late to offer the MLB HD for free too. Maybe next season?

It's not just one CSR either, as evident by the URL I posted above, others have found the same. I've had two-three others at DirecTV tell me that I do not need Superfan to get all of the HD games. The particular woman I referenced above is just the first that was actually able to explain what is going on.

The way she makes it sound, it's for everyone (new or not) but I cannot say that for sure.

Maybe we all no longer need to be suckers to get our games in HD?!

I have NFL Sunday Ticket and HD Access. Yesterday I got a promotional mailer from Directv that says "Get over 150 games in HD with NFL Sunday Ticket Superfan." The small print at the bottom says that you must sign up for NFL Sunday Ticket and that HD equipment and HD Access ($9.95) is required.

I hope you were given accurate information, and that I don't need to purchase Superfan to get all the games in HD. But, I admit that at this point I'm skeptical.

I'm not a new subscriber to D* or Sunday Ticket. I've had both for the last 7 years.

I just talked to two reps, both said superfart is required. The link cited earlier is unclear, it implies that new customer are eligible, not prior ST subscribers. Totally confused. After 10 years plus maybe its time to rethink ST, especially considering that the number of actual ST games are decreasing with Sat, Sunday night, Monday, & Thursday games. Time to check the Vikes schedule and make a decision, besides they will suck this year, and Randy is in NE where I get them OTA.

I just did that same kind of math. I'm a Patriots fan in North Carolina, and I decided my Pats are going to be on enough TV that I don't need the ST. I'm also getting the NFL.com audio package for $29.99, which gives me all the Pats games (yes, not video, but that's $30 instead of the $300-plus for ST and superfan.) D* will eventually hit a price range that they start losing ST subscribers. This year was that price range for me.

I agree with you guys that this is a very confusing situation.

With all that I've been told, I'm going to have to place my money on Superfan NOT being required to receive the games in HD. Seriously, can a supervisor really fabricate the details that she gave to me about the change?

Now whether it's for new or existing customers, that I have no idea. Luckily, I am a new customer, I should benefit either way.

As for value, I think if I can get the games in HD for $280, it is worth it for me. I am a Browns fan (don't laugh) in a big-small city of North Carolina (Sanford, NC). In order for me to catch the games each week, I have to drive 40 miles each way to a sports bar. By the time I pay for gas, and restaurant prices for food and beer, it saves me money getting the games at home. I have a 102" HD picture too top it off!

If anyone else has any recent experiences with DirecTV on this topic, please share your findings.

Seriously, can a supervisor really fabricate the details that she gave to me about the change? No, but the most likely reason, if the info is faulty, is a mistake. It happens all the time with customer service reps. They simply misread or misunderstand, and the next thing you know here we are.

Having said that, I suppose we'll have to wait & see what happens.

You make a good point, I should have thought of that. I work in IT/IS support for a call center, it's amazing how people can twist things they've read or been told verbally.
