View Full Version : H20 Question, Can you get OTA HD locals IF your TV doesn't have a tuner?

I set up an H20 last night in place of an HR10-250 and now I'm not getting HD locals. The TV i'm using is a bit older and does not have a tuner of any kind. I didn't think this would matter but I can't think of any other reason why the HD locals aren't coming in.

Whenever I try to access an HD local, I get a message that it is searching for signal on the off air tuner... (771) but it is working fine with my non HD locals.

My main setup in the living room (HR10-250 + XBR) hasn't changed and still is getting locals in HD and is on the same antenna so I don't think anything has changed.

Thanks for any input.

Have you done an OTA setup and a scan on the H20 for your OTA locals? What signal strengths are you seeing?

Another odd thing is I have multiple versions of non HD locals as well. For instance, I have two channel 4's and so forth in the channel list. Can't seem to set it up any other way.

I did and it shows zero signal strength. Like it is not recognizing the antenna. All my connections are correct and firm so I know it's not that.

Has anyone used the H20 with just a monitor yet?

It's possible the multiple channels you are seeing are the SD and HD versions available via Directv. Your OTA stations should still be listed as 4-1 for example. You may have some HD locals available via Directv at your location but you need the 5 LNB dish to get them (and the new MPEG4 national channels coming next month.) Check D*'s website for local channels to see if you have any local HD's available.

The HR20 when first introduced did not have the ATSC tuners activated, it's possible yours doesn't out of the box but will shortly when it picks up the latest software updates if it hasn't already. As for setting up OTA, great thread below on it.

OK now we are getting somewhere. I actually have the HR20, not the H20 as I stated earlier. I do believe Mjones is right as this AM IF I PUT IT ON CHANNEL 4 (OUR LOCAL NBC), I saw one in SD and one in HD. The problem I'm having is the 4-1 isn't working and so forth. I just check all the connections again and everything is perfect so perhaps its a software issue and it will fix itself. And yes I do have a 5 LNB dish as they installed in on Friday. It looks just like all the pics I've seen and has the additional side brace but it only seems to have 3 elements, not the 5 I expected, although it looks like there is room for 2 more. Is this normal?

I'm sure people have been able to use the OTA HD channels (i.e. 4-1) with this box but my TV in the bedroom is an older LCD without a tuner built in so I thought that might have something to do with it.

You might try re scanning your 4.1. Many times if your receiver has scanned and hasn't picked up that channel, sometimes from lack of antenna reception, it won't appear on your receiver. Depending on the receiver, sometimes you can insert that number into your program.

That's correct, one of the heads has 3 of the LNB's built into it for the 99, 101, and 103 sats, the other two cover the 110 and 119.

Your LCD not having a tuner has no impact on what the HR20 can or can't do.

Check the link I posted and follow the steps to set up your OTA reception and of course make sure you have your OTA feed hooked up to the right place on the back of the HR20.

Thanks Matt. I appreciate your comments.

I went away for the weekend and now the dish is out of whack. I think it was blown out of adjustment by a strong wind as my signal went from 82% to 2% while I was gone. Now I've got to figure out how to get it back in place.

Call D* and let them fix it, apparently they didn't install it right if it moved already.
