View Full Version : Wizard of Oz coming for HD-DVD?
dabear35 08-08-07, 10:22 AM Is The Wizard of Oz coming out for HD-DVD? I heard a rumor months ago that it might be released in and around December, but I have heard nothing about this since. I did, however, notice it has a link on Amazon.com about its eventual release. This would be an awesome movie in High Definition and a must buy for many people. This would no doubt be a big promotion for HD during Christmas.
bboisvert 08-08-07, 12:32 PM This was on most of the early lists, yet I haven't heard a peep in months.
My guess is that since other big, well-done classics like Casablanca and Forbidden Planet haven't sold well, Warner is rethinking their release schedules. We'll see Oz, but they may hold off until the install base is larger.
the listing for this movie as an upcoming release was one of my selling points to my wife to get into HDDVD, I do hope they release it soon
rosscan 08-08-07, 12:54 PM I'd say OZ is arguably bigger than Casablanca and Forbidden Planet so I'd still hope to see this before the year is up.
Human Bean 08-08-07, 09:03 PM Can't say how much this matters to Los Hermanos Warner, but currently in the Blood Diamond HD poll:
Which CLASSIC MUSICAL is a must-have on HD DVD?
Wizard of Oz: 70.3%
Singin' in the Rain: 20.2%
That's Entertainment: 4.7%
Meet Me in St. Louis: 4.9%
dabear35 08-09-07, 11:19 AM I have my fingers crossed anywayz.
BlackMR2 08-10-07, 03:53 AM would be good in HD, because the dark side of the moon SACD i have would be awesome to go with it
LiquidX 08-10-07, 04:07 AM would be good in HD, because the dark side of the moon SACD i have would be awesome to go with it
Not to get off topic, but is it truly in sync or does it appear to be slightly off?
Edit: Someone PM'ed me a link to youtube which showed WoO in sync with DSotM. Being the first time I've actually seen it with Pink Floyd's tracks, wow, a slight mindf*ck I must say. Intentional or not, there are quite of few similarities between song(s) and movie.
darinp2 08-10-07, 04:45 AM As I've said before, I think The Wizard of Oz is one of the few exceptions to the rule about old titles not selling well. If done right and marketed right I think this one could sell very well. I was hoping we would have it last year as it was on one of the early lists that got leaked.

I am 39 and still like to see it once in a awhile, my parents in their 70's have always loved it, and I have a girl that just turned 4 who is mesmerized by it.
They should do it soon, and not f$%# it up, I think it could be a huge seller personally.

It's intentional. The information I have says to unpause the CD (playing, but paused, rewound to 00:00) at the second Lion roar in the MGM logo during the start of the movie. Do it right and it's timed perfectly. Also, make sure the CD is set to auto repeat the entire disc. The second time thru it's still synced to certain scenes.
BlackMR2 08-10-07, 10:17 AM there's a 43 minute you tube video of it too with DSOTM audio and the movie's audio running at the same time.
And i'd like to make a second shameless plug for the SACD version of the album

Where did you hear it was intentional. The interview I read with the boys said it wasn't (but they could have been winking)
Andrew J L 08-10-07, 03:24 PM WoO and Ten Commandments is what I want.
nakedeye 08-10-07, 03:32 PM Well acording to the Spec Ed DVD they did a 4K scan with the original elements

No, it isn't intentional. It's a coincidence. Period.
Sheesh....some people will believe anything.

Never mind that the album was recorded in 1972 and was originally released on LP (how was the flipping of the record supposed to work?) and videotape for home use didn't exist at the time--there was no "pause" button on projectors to facilitate the flip.
Now, just because it's a load of crap doesn't mean you can't enjoy it with your bong, but seriously--it's a coincidence.

very much so.
Am I the only adult who is terrified of this movie? Honestly, I have been phobic in regards to WOO since childhood. The whole thing is frightening to me. Midgits...flying monkeys....that horrible face of Margret Hamilton's witch.
Ugh....I get the heebe geebies just thinking about it. I know it is a classic...but nothing scares me more than WOO.

I got one. "The Wiz" with Michael Jackson.
BGLeduc 08-10-07, 06:45 PM If this comes to HD media, it will be my first Quadruple Dip.....

No actually. My older sister feels the same way about it. For whatever reason, the flying monkeys and the cowardly lion (of all things, the lion? ) creeped her out the first time she saw it. She vows to never see it again when and if her kids ever come across it.
I think it may have something to do with the style of the movie for it's time. It may just hit a spot in some people.

See, this is the problem, there should be a Dark Side of Oz kit not just the HDDVD. :D
dabear35 08-13-07, 10:39 AM In HD, the contrast between the black and white scenes to the color of OZ would be phenomenal to see.
seniorpaul 09-30-07, 11:55 AM Has there been any recent news regarding the Wizard of Oz. A friend of mine swears up and down that she recently read that it was coming out this year, but the only things i can kind are outdated articles.

She's not the only one.I could have sworn I saw it on the HD DVD 4th quarter release list but haven't seen nor heard of an exact date. They're probably painstakingly restoring this one for HD DVD purposes as well as working on new features for it.Somehow I doubt they'd throw even the best dvd version on HD DVD and get away with it.
When WoO does appear on HiDef it's going to be something special, that I will guess.

It was listed on the warner hidef page, when they launched their new site. There were a lot of titles listed that haven't been announced, but they had no details, so who knows if their just place holders, or titles that are actually in the works. I just went back to the new warner hidef page, and the unannounced titles have been removed from the list, so I guess we'll just have to wait for an official announcement, of which there hasn't been one yet.

right up there with the brooms in fantasia... :)
when WoO comes out, they'll sell at least one copy to me...
can't say it's bigger than casablanca though... casablanca is the greatest movie ever made...
badandyho 09-30-07, 02:53 PM Wizard of Oz would be a sale to me. I picked up Casablanca in my perfect offer and I've never seen it. I'm going to on Tuesday after my dentist appointment.
MattGuyOR 09-30-07, 03:04 PM Such a marvelous film. Gets me every time. Even though the entire movie is filmed on sets, you still just get lost in it. A true classic and a must buy for me, no question.
jameskollar 09-30-07, 03:45 PM There's a scene in Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow where they're in a movie theater. There's a closeup of the two actors with the Wizard of Oz playing on the big screen behind them. I remember wishing that they would get out of the way and show the Wizard of Oz. :) It really looked good! Hope it comes out soon, a definite must buy.
ragar01 09-30-07, 05:01 PM With the That's Entertainment Box coming soon, we will get to see some of OZ in HD.
A release I can't wait for.

PopcornReady 09-30-07, 06:07 PM Well, hate to break it to everyone, but the studios have announced all their big titles for the season already in the trade press and started to take final advance bookings. You'll have to make due, this season, with the 4 disc tribute box in upconverted SD till next year.
Mark Booth 09-30-07, 11:20 PM I will sextuple-dip (VHS, Laserdisc x 2 and DVD x 2) on Wizard Of Oz at ANY time they decide to release it in high-def. In fact, it is one of the few titles that -if it were to be Blu-exclusive- would sway me to go neutral! Of course, I don't have to worry about that because it is a Warner product! :D
I still own the Ultimate Oz box set on Laserdisc. I never could bring myself to get rid of it. I removed the laserdisc player form my equipment rack almost two years ago but I still held onto the Oz box set!
Mark
dabear35 10-02-07, 05:31 PM I'm not so sure that all of the major titles have been announced. Do you have any proof of this? I feel that their might be a few surprises for us in store. It might not be The Wizard of Oz, but perhaps Braveheart or Gladiator.
spectator 10-02-07, 06:23 PM Can't say how much this matters to Los Hermanos Warner, but currently in the Blood Diamond HD poll:
Which CLASSIC MUSICAL is a must-have on HD DVD?
Wizard of Oz: 70.3%
Singin' in the Rain: 20.2%
That's Entertainment: 4.7%
Meet Me in St. Louis: 4.9%
Man, am I gonna have to buy a couple thousand copies of Blood Diamond so I can ballot-stuff this poll over to Singin' In the Rain?
