What makes one an audiophile. I know there are many here, is it the equipment or something else.

It's my name that makes me an audiophile! :)

From Wikipedia:

An audiophile, from Latin audire[1] "to hear" and Greek philos[2] "loving," can be generally defined as a person dedicated to achieving high fidelity in the recording and playback of music.

I'd change music to Audio though.

I used to be an audiophile. But these days, too many of them seem to be into magic cables, cd treatments, magic chips, ers paper, magic bricks, and countless other audio voodoo items.

Who wants to be associated with those nuts?

Now I just refer to myself as a music lover.

I happen to know for sure that you need Nordost Valhalla cabling and lots of ERS paper to be an audiophile. Most other factors aren't too important, as I'm told by experts.

Hell half the time I almost prefer to FEEL the music more then hear it :)

What does that make me? :)

Just clicked the equipment link in your sig and saw that the animal which I can't positively identify as dog though I think it is one sleeps in front of the speakers... Somehow that reminds me of my cat that really loves sleeping on the sub when I watch a movie. I guess she also likes to feel the sound. :)

Just to contribute something to the original topic: I personally think that you don't need more than love for music to be an audiophile. People who think that you can't appreciate music without owning equipment that's worth more than some african states (strictly financially spoken) are, in my opinion, snobs. It surely is nice to own that kind of stuff, but thinking that you really need that in order to enjoy music is like thinking that you have to be an astronaut in order to appreciate the beauty of the night sky...

Personally, I consider an audiophile not only a music lover or expensive hi-fi equipment owner but someone who has an interest in the intricacies of music playback or recording. I love music, but what makes me consider myself an audiophile is the fact that I like to sit down in front of my speakers, put in a good recording, and listen for qualities like soundstaging, imaging, etc... When I'm in that listening mode, I'd rather listen to a good recording that I enjoy less musically than a one of my favorite albums (e.g. Delerium - Karma) that is unlistenable on a good stereo.

That's my $0.02.

...and a complete lack of understanding of basic electronic principlesm, hence, requiring the 'audiophile' to use meaningless words like "soundstage" and "imaging".

Your comments Targus, as usual, are devoid of rhythm, pace, timing, and blackness.

Seems uncalled for...but anyway. I by no means consider myself an expert and you're right, I don't have a degree in Electrical Engineering, but I learned all this reading magazines like Stereophile (I know, snobby) and The Absolute Sound, and in speaking to very knowledgeable people at various hi-fi stores or at the Festival Son et Image in Montreal. These are the 'meaningless' words they use, so if you have a problem with it, why don't you debate it with Michael Fremer.

I rest my case. You're not an EE, but you know all this stuff, because you read (non technical) magazines, and have spoken to a stereo salesman.

Seems uncalled for...

Why? I posted my opinion, as you did yours.

So what "meaningful" words would you use to describe the psyhcoacoustic experience of listening to high fidelity 2 channel stereo music?

hahahha!

Indeed! That’s a little piece of a crazy black lab. Odd thing is that I think he is an audiophile also!! He sits in that spot or under the center no matter how loud it gets during movies or music. The sound doesn’t phase him. My Cat runs from the room when I turn it on :)

See! Dogs can be audiophile.

I now deem my dog: Ty: the audiophile.

Those animals have more technically advanced hobbies than one might think... As I said - the female cat is a bass lover (I guess she enjoys techno when I'm not there) while the male cat (what's the english word for that?) is a computer freak:

http://www.bluephod.net/img/tastenkater.jpg

The most important audiophile question remains: Will the blackness and soundstage of the typical "meow" I get from the furballs increase if I serve their food on ERS paper instead of putting it in metal bowls? ;)

Hmmm.. you know... by looking at that picture, your male cat may just be trying to get close to that nice beer you have sitting there! GOOD CAT!!! If you ask me, it looks like hes protecting it from the other one!!!! I dunno though, you might want to check your browser history, he might be checking out some cat-nip sites.

You know, my last cat (which was an example of waht a perfect cat should be) used to sit in front of the sub to!!!

»Kater« = "tomcat" (unneutered male cat)

Ah, OK. I always thought that "tomcat" somehow didn't sound correct, but when I get it from a native speaker, I know that I can trust that translation in the future.

@Mike Lang

Vacation because of the off-topic posting or because of the little audiophile nagging? I just ask in order to be able to avoid a ban - as you correctly say, neither one would be worth it.
