View Full Version : Comparison of Fourth Quarter Exclusives
Well, the fourth quarter is finished.
The Blu-ray folks finish with a greater number of releases, but, in my estimation, both sides came out about equal in terms of quality. Still, for my money, HD DVD had slightly more "must own" titles. But to each his or her own. :) (I just had to have Transformers, Pride and Prejudice, Shrek the Third, Tremors, Battlestar Galactica, Star Trek (original series), The Bourne Ultimatum, and Stardust.)
I had hoped that the HD DVD studios would release more titles, and I had hoped that Weinstein would get back to releasing (I'm still hoping for "1408" at some point!), but I suppose there is always next quarter! The studios certainly have a lot of strong titles that could be released, so let's hope they get busy in the coming year.
Sales, as most know, favored Blu-ray throughout the quarter, with Blu-ray "winning" every week. (Like my last "comparison" thread, which you can view here (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=856401), I included Nielsen numbers as they became available.)
Here is the list comparing the exclusive fourth-quarter releases for each format.

valleybacker 08-08-07, 06:20 PM That does not bode well for HD.
Although Universal will definately be releaseing Bourne Ultimatum, Knocked up, and Evan in Q4.
OggideM 08-08-07, 06:21 PM something tells me there will be more than 5 HDDVD exclusive titles released in that timeframe.
Johnsteph10 08-08-07, 06:26 PM Universal tends to not announce upcoming titles as early as the others.
jagouar 08-08-07, 06:34 PM I really hope some big names get announced.... both hd-dvd and bluray have horrible lists this holiday season. Maybe 5 movies on both lists Im interested in.
Woodshed 08-08-07, 06:34 PM Wow, that is rather eye-opening.
Kind of an idiotic time to start a thread like this, considering Uni hasn't announced their 4th Quarter line up yet.
Hey, somebody start a thread comparing the lineups for both BD and HD-DVD in 4th Quarter '09. What's that you say, there are zero titles on that list??? ZOMG, that must mean both formats will be dead by then!?!?!?!!1!!!1!!
bboisvert 08-08-07, 06:36 PM Although Universal will definately be releaseing Bourne Ultimatum, Knocked up, and Evan in Q4.
Exactly. Universal hasn't made a single announcement for November or December. You can expect to not only see new theatrical stuff like Borne, Knocked up (likely Sept.), Evan, Evening, Mr. Bean, Talk to Me, The Kingdom, and Chuck+Larry... but also great catalog stuff like Battlestar Galactica, American Pie, Pride and Prejudice, and others.
And Star Trek is a biggie that may even deserve an asterisk of some sort... because it's not only unreleased on BD. It's also not being released on standard DVD. That's a first. The price tag is the big question mark in this whole thing, but it's still significant. Any Trek fan who wants this title has to grab the HD/DVD combo. And that -- I would imagine -- would make a $200 HD DVD player pretty damn tempting.
MidnightWatcher 08-08-07, 07:03 PM BD studios like to announce releases well in advance (and then pull quite a few of them). There will be MANY more HD DVD exclusives coming up for Q4. Though these are not Q4, don't forget August and September HD DVD exclusives:
August 14, 2007
* Erin Brockovich (Universal)
* Meet the Fockers (Universal)
* Mercury Rising (Universal)
* What Dreams May Come (Universal)
August 28, 2007
* Dawn of the Dead (2004) (Universal)
* Heroes: Season One (Universal)
* The Hurricane (2000) (Universal)
* Notting Hill (Universal)
September 18, 2007
* Elizabeth (Universal)
* For Love of the Game (Universal)
* The Last Starfighter (Universal)
September 25, 2007
* Cat People (1982) (Universal)
* The Getaway (1994) (Universal)
* Patch Adams (Universal)
HomerJay 08-08-07, 07:12 PM BD studios like to announce releases well in advance (and then pull quite a few of them). Are you suggesting there might be a better way to sell players?... ;)
The first week of August is not the time to be comparing Q4 releases, as pretty much all others have stated. Universal (and the entire HD DVD group) likes to hold their plans close to their chest and release the info when they want. They will not disappoint...especially since Universal has a better catalog to choose from than Sony and friends have...:)
smkstang1 08-08-07, 07:20 PM I want "The Company" on HD DVD... Crap, crap crap... I wish someone would release it outside of US, but that is highly unlikely, since it was never in the theaters (only on TNT playing now)...
HPforMe 08-08-07, 07:24 PM Kind of an idiotic time to start a thread like this, considering Uni hasn't announced their 4th Quarter line up yet.

Yes. Not only that but you can't isolate exlcusives on a list like this because although the list shows Blu Ray with more there is maybe three or four which are buys for me. Secondly, Fox is a no-show in that list and Disney barely is scratching the surface. The list, if that's all we can expect for the Blu Ray exclusives, is disconcerting and should be a concern to any Blu Ray owner.
Right now, the neutral studios plus Universal is where it's at and there is a nice and growing selection for the holiday season.
rexdigital 08-08-07, 07:27 PM And Star Trek is a biggie that may even deserve an asterisk of some sort... because it's not only unreleased on BD. It's also not being released on standard DVD. That's a first.
Unless somebody made a mistake, its listed as a beloved combo with standard DVD on one side.
HomerJay 08-08-07, 07:29 PM Unless somebody made a mistake, its listed as a beloved combo with standard DVD on one side. But only as a DVD/HD DVD combo. There is no DVD-only release of the Star Trek set.
bboisvert 08-08-07, 07:39 PM Unless somebody made a mistake, its listed as a beloved combo with standard DVD on one side.
You misunderstood my point. It is an HD DVD / DVD combo. But there is no separate, individual standard DVD release.
So anyone who wants this -- including standard def people who do not yet have HD DVD players -- has to pick up the combo version. That's all there is.

Absolutely the case. They announce, and announce and then they don't release like FOX. :D
It is just their marketing ploy: "See, we have more announced titles than HD DVD so buy our more expensive game machines".
It has gotten old and rather pathetic. :D
5thDanMaster 08-08-07, 07:49 PM Well, we're well into summer, and the fourth quarter is looming. The Blu-ray side has announced a number of titles for the fourth quarter, and a few have trickled out on the HD DVD side. Below is a list comparing the exclusive releases for each format. At this point, Blu-ray has the clear numbers advantage (assuming the slated titles don't get delayed!), but I think there is much to come from the HD DVD side.
This is not a comparison, it is alist of BD "announced" movies (as funny as that sounds). A comparison would be when HD DVD has already brought their releases to light, and we compare releases from both camps..
Kind of an idiotic time to start a thread like this, considering Uni hasn't announced their 4th Quarter line up yet.

Thanks for starting this thread, "now"! :D
For those of us that want to know "now" & not be blind to announced releases.
&
For those of us that want to know when things start to change (if at all).
Great work!!!
JaylisJayP 08-08-07, 08:13 PM Of all those Blu-Ray exclusives listed...I plan on buying 2. PTOC and Cars.

Bout 8 to 12 for me.
If Fox releases any, I'll be broke come christmas.

We're not even half way through Q3 yet. Universal still has plenty of time to announce their titles such as The Bourne Ultimatum, Knocked Up, Chuck & Larry, etc. and when they do I believe there's going to be some pleasant surprises. Me too. Looks like an interesting piece. That list is looking one sided. I didn't know BD had all those announced for release. Still plenty of time for new releases on HD-DVD, lets not jump the gun. :D
I'm only interested in:
Reign Over Me
Cars
Scary Movie
Badder Santa Unrated

How can you make this list when Universal hasn't announce their holiday lineup yet and not even mentioned the rumored one?

9/25 - Cat People, Evening, The Getaway, Knocked Up, Patch Adams

It is kinda funny when microsoft's live marketplace has better HD content from disney on its first day than bluray has gotten this whole year. (short of potc1&2)
DJ Matt 08-08-07, 10:15 PM There has to be more releases than that. Release dates just have not been set for a few movies such as Knocked Up, Evan Almighty, Transformers, Bourne Ultimatum, etc.

Agreed!
The movie business is different than the video game business. Back in the day, you needed a Playstation to play GTA3 or Resident Evil and that was that, they were Playstation exclusives. There are really no movie exclusives if you ask me. They start in the theater, come to DVD, then Pay Per View, then cable and finally basic TV! Sure, some movies will only be released on Blu-ray and not HD DVD (and vice-versa) but it’s not like you need a Blu-ray player to see these movies, you could just buy the normal, cheaper SD DVD, and that’s just fine for most people.
I think the HD DVD group is right: lower-priced players are more important than movie exclusives (that aren’t really exclusive) right now.

To all who are saying that the list is idiotic and retarded, thanks for the excellent feedback!
As I indicated in my initial post, I will update as more titles are announced. I only started this thread now so that I could get a head start. Universal has only announced its first wave for October -- I know. I am anxiously awaiting the next wave and all other waves (along with any other exclusive announcements). I fully expect that Universal will announce additional, great titles. (So, for those who view this list and want to say, "Ooh, things aren't looking good for HD DVD," please.)
I have not included any rumored releases, but I am well aware of them. When they are officially announced, I will include them. I have also not included August and September, because they are already listed on my other "comparison" thread. Check it out: http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=856401
Everyone is saying Universal has not announce their releases for the 4th quarter yet ...you guys think Blu-ray exclusive studios finished announcing all their releases?
Just think when and if Fox announces all their releases. Warner Brothers is going to release some backlog catalog titles too for Blu-ray like Batman, The Matrix Box Set and V for Vendetta. Ratatouille, Live Free or Die Hard, FF2, Sunshine, and The Simpsons Movie have not been announced yet either.
It doesn't look good for HD DVD.
darn you , blue Halloween , darn you all to heck
Some good titles on both sides and I expect more from Uni. Probably more BD titles for me personally.
One mistake I saw. Star Trek is not exclusive, just coming the HD DVD first.
Sporadic 08-09-07, 01:13 AM To all who are saying that the list is idiotic and retarded, thanks for the excellent feedback!
Hey man, I call a spade a spade.
It's dumb to make a "comparison of fourth quarter exclusives" when the main company behind exclusives on HD-DVD hasn't officially announce their line-up yet.
You aren't comparing anything because there is nothing to compare with. You are just posting Blu-Ray's release list.

Why not add them with an *RUMORED* behind them.
It isn't like the list I posted magically appeared out of nowhere, Digital Bits has been dead on in the past.

I agree completely. This was the premise of my argument.
HA!
I don't know if I would even buy one of those sorry BR titles. They really struggle without Universal. Lucky they got Warner helping out.
Even seeing Sporadic's post... the only thing I can think of after viewing this thread is "When can I start budgeting for a BD player"
List updated with Universal's October 9th release of Evan Almighty. I haven't seen an official announcement from Universal, but it has been reported in a couple of places. This date differs from The Digital Bits rumored list, which places this release on November 6th. Not sure who is right at this point.

That post must have come from an alternate universe.
List updated with Disney's November 6th release of Ratatouille.
blainehamilton 08-10-07, 06:32 PM Haven't we seen announced titles like these be cancelled or pushed back even further before?
MidnightWatcher 08-10-07, 06:33 PM Universal wasn't even finished announcing Q3 as of today, let alone Q4. They just officially announced "Knocked Up" for September 25!
List updated with Universal's December 4th release of Battlestar Galactica: Miniseries and Complete First Season.
This can't come soon enough, as far as I'm concerned.

please relax.

Ryan Peddle 08-15-07, 11:19 AM The Kingdom, American Gangster are going to be huge titles from Uni.
I am also hope all to heck and crossing every finger and every toe that Uni releases the Office seasons on HDDVD.
I have to say this is the first impressive BD release announcement that I have been impressed with. Halloween, Lost (will be great in HD), Dracula, Hostel, and Ratatuille could cause me to go neutral (which I really don't want to do). I do not want two players to begin with nor do I like the BD format.
Kingdom, American Gangstar, Ultimatum, and Knocked up will be good for Universal, but Evan Almighty might have been one of the worst movies I have ever seen. That one my folks is not to brag on.
This really sucks.
bboisvert 08-15-07, 12:53 PM but Evan Almighty might have been one of the worst movies I have ever seen. That one my folks is not to brag on.
I have no interest in it at all, but the fact is that it's a religious-themed, family film that pulled in about $100 million. There is more than a little interest in it and it will sell well as a day-and-date title around the holidays.
"Brag" about it? Maybe not... but the other side has exclusives that "suck" too (Ghost Rider, Wild Hogs, etc. etc.). They still sell well.
This really sucks.
This list isn't even close to being complete, given that the main exclusive distributor (Universal) has not announced many titles for Q4 yet.
I wouldn't start getting depressed yet.
In addition, while the focus of this thread is on exclusives, don't forget all of the fantastic titles that Warner is putting out. I've preordered a big pile of October and November titles from them and I'm going to go broke trying to keep up. ;)

Good point about exclusives. For some reason I was thinking that these were the only releases??? Duh!! There are only a few that I REALLY want so I guess you are right. I completely forgot about Warner and Paramont who release the best films of all sides so far IMO.
Otis Widlflower 08-15-07, 01:33 PM I have to say this is the first impressive BD release announcement that I have been impressed with. A $200 BD player would get me neutral, I still have 1 free HDMI port on my receiver. However, I'd require of course that it be able to play all BD discs now and forever, with all necessary hardware and software for all time. I don't think there's any BD player that does that, excepting possibly for the PS3.
I want Inside Man on HD DVD. Possibly Ratatouille on Blu-Ray (gotta see it first).
Of the unannounced sure shots I want The Bourne Ultimatum and I might want Knocked Up (Gotta see that one too) on HD DVD and Live Free or Die Hard on Blu-Ray. And Transformers will almost certainly be out on both, I'll get that one on HD DVD if it is.
Joon TV 08-15-07, 02:06 PM No madder what titles Universal announces they will not be able to cover the amount of BD exclusives that are to be released in Q4. Even if they can get to half the amount of BD exclusives it won't make a dent. With Christmas coming, and I am not saying the ps3 is going to have stellar sales, HD-DVD players will not be able to keep up. HD-DVD players are having trouble keeping up with stand alone BD players let alone the ps3. The add on for the 360 will have some sales but not nearly enough. Q4 will be the nail in the coffin and by Q1, no later then Q2 this format war will FINALLY be over and then we can all buy just one format and enjoy all movies. Oh, and get rid of DVD.
zebracrackhead 08-15-07, 03:27 PM 11/6 Evan Almighty
12/11 - Bourne Ultimatum
12/26 - The Kingdom, Balls of Fury
The timeframe on these are pretty realistic:
Balls of Fury - 4 months
Bourne Ultimatum - 4 months
Evan Almighty - 4 1/2 months
Transformer's is rumored around Dec 4th, so that will be a full 5 months.
But does anybody else think this is being release a little too quickly:
The Kingdom - 3 months after the theatrical release?

"No madder"?
Anyway, this is all great speculation, but it doesn't have many facts to back it up.
Star Trek is coming out exclusively as an HD DVD/DVD combo. There will be no standard DVD release. Any Trekker that wants it has to buy the HD DVD set. That's HUGE. And the thousands of Trekkers who do will then see that Heroes and Battlestar Galactica are also HD DVD exclusives. And that they can get a player for under 200 bucks. What do you think they're going to do then?
The PS3 has already sold 1.5 million units and the blu-ray format has only sold 700,000 more pieces of software in over a year. I wouldn't look to the PS3 to be the savior of the format, if I were you. History and sales data are saying otherwise.
We've heard this "nail in the coffin" talk again and again. It hasn't happened yet, and it won't magically happen this holiday season.
HD DVD will have cheaper hardware and a few great exclusives. BD will have more expensive hardware and a few better exclusives. That situation sounds more like a stalemate than an end to the format war, wouldn't you say?
HA!
I don't know if I would even buy one of those sorry BR titles. They really struggle without Universal. Lucky they got Warner helping out.
Say no to drugs.
AustinSTI 08-15-07, 05:25 PM Exactly! Universal's list blows the BD one out of the park. :)
I think this thread is dumb at this juncture too but to say that the universal list blows the BD one out of the water is a bit of an overstatement wouldn't you agree? Half the movies on the universal list BLOW IMHO....I mean Evan tanked and bean is the biggest idiot on the planet...some of the title catalogues are alright but what sells is the day and date releases not the catalogue titles...if you look at it that way the Blu-Ray blows the Uni list out of the water...guess it all depends on your spin right?
Oh and lets not forget all the garbage transfers of catalgue titles universal has been releasing...which will probably continue into this list...

Since Spider-Man 3 has to be purchased to get 1 and 2 that brings the number of titles down to three.
Thanks Sony for giving me a reason to stay HD DVD exclusive!
List updated with new (delayed) date for Tartan's release of "Oldboy" on November 6.

The list of exclusive HD DVDs is definitely getting stronger. :)
(I list these as "rumored" because I don't recall seeing any official announcement. But there have been various reports about the Transformers date, and Columbiahouse has Shrek up for pre-order with release on November 13. So, I guess we will see!)

I find it kind of funny that what i want is 7 from HD and 9 from BD. I may be wrong but that means that i want 38% of what HD has and i only want 14% of what BD has. So now tell me who makes more of a profit from me on Q4 :)

MichaelHDDVD 09-03-07, 09:42 PM Really? Who knew that movies are simply better based on what studio releases them? Amazing...
Not based on which studios release them, but because certain studios are involved with the process of making them. Warner Bros. has had some of the best movies the past few years. So yes the studio matters because they make the movie ;)
Backlash 09-03-07, 10:53 PM You left out Bladerunner for HD-DVD, and isn't Potter coming out before the year's end?

Based on previous posts you've made on this forum, you've basically said that BluRay has no interest to you because there aren't any movies on the format that appeal to you. I'm just kind of curious if you completely rule out seeing movies and TV series produced/distributed by Sony/Fox/Disney/Lionsgate because they're BluRay studios, and therefore what they produce must be crap.
I mean, you use "Little Man" as an example, and sure it's generally considered a terrible movie. But it's not like everything Universal/Paramount/Dreamworks has released is cinema gold...
steven975 09-04-07, 12:04 AM OK, what's the difference between the BSG sets on 9/18 and 12/4? I think having 2 different versions of the same season doesn't make much sense.

Bladerunner and the Harry Potter movies are not exclusive to HD DVD -- at least not yet. ;)

I don't know of any official word regarding this release date. If the date changes, I will certainly update the list.

There are not two HD versions of the first season. That September 18th release date was just a rumored release date that came to light on the digital bits website.
The official release date is currently December 4th. And I still say it can't get here fast enough! (Now, if only I could get clarification on whether Razor will be released on HD DVD on that date, too!)

Your going to be busy!
fistofsouth 09-05-07, 10:31 PM Universal is running out of blockbuster titles. Paramount/Dreamworks is yet to make counter announcements. Hope that they make some massive announcements soon.
Let's see Universal has a catalog of 5,294 films and they've released about 110 of them on HD DVD. That leaves over 5,000 films, many of them "Block Busters", that Universal can release. Keep in mind that doesn't include their possible releases from Morgan Creek, Working Title, NBC or any of the other studios they control. Assuming Universal quit making films today they can keep releasing on HD DVD at their current pace for about 50 years before they run out of content.
I would also like to point out that two of the BD "exclusive" titles in the OP are already out on HD DVD; Mr. & Mrs. Smith can be imported from Poland and Old Boy can be imported from Japan.
fistofsouth 09-05-07, 10:49 PM Based on previous posts you've made on this forum, you've basically said that BluRay has no interest to you because there aren't any movies on the format that appeal to you. Well MichaelHDDVD can answer for himself, but I am of the opinion that much of what is out on BD blows. Not everything mind you; Pulp Fiction, Reservoir Dogs, The Usual Suspects, POTC and Donnie Brasco would all make welcome additions to my HDM library. The problem is that most of those films will be remade later with interactive content when BD-J, BD 1.1 and BD 2.0 are finished; why buy now when there will be a better version later on?
Then there is the fact that when a BD studio releases something I actually might want they either screw up the transfer so bad that a new one is required (The Fifth Element, RoboCop, et al) or they release the crappiest film in the series (AVP instead of Alien or Aliens). Other possible BD releases that would attract me (Star Wars) are YEARS down the road. Plus most of what is out on BD right now is of the “testosterone enriched” variety; that’s not bad if they are decent films (The aforementioned PF, RD, TUS et al), but many of them (Stealth, The Marine, Crank) are just ridiculous.
HD DVD has a more balanced library plus they have interactive features today. Many of us HD DVD supporters like the POTENTIAL BD releases, but when they release bare-bones Blu-rays, sans interactive content and with crappy PQ (House of Flying Artifacts, er I mean Daggers) it is easy to pass them up. Let Disney do a nice transfer of Sling Blade and I’ll be tempted, have Lion’s Gate release Frailty with interactive content and I’ll have a desire to go Blu, get Fox to release Office Space and I’ll take the Blu Pill. Right now I have enough HD DVDs that I actually want to keep me busy for years.

Now if I could just get a list with dates . . . :)
List updated with MGM's November 6th release of "Red Dawn."
There is actually many of the Fox announced titles I would like to have in my collection.
Unfortunately a history of overpriced titles, 90% being on 25g discs with little to no extras, an avereage HDD PQ rating of 3.7, audio tracks that no player can decode, no interactivit and a history misleading advertising and as someone mentions above will probably be re-released with Profile 2.0 & Profile 3.0 in the future and perhaps then would include interactive features all this doesnt bode well for me purchasing any of these.
I'd rather pay the extra $5-10 and get the HD import version now with more interactivity and more extras
punkyqb9407 09-07-07, 07:34 AM HD DVD Stated that 125 movies are still coming out this 4th quarter at CEDIA 2007. They still haven't posted the list and they will be these next couple of days. Many of those 125 movies will be exclusives that will make alot of HD DVD owners broke (LIKE ME) and many BLURAY owners wishing they could buy those titles.
punkyqb9407 09-07-07, 07:37 AM HD DVD still has Scarface, The Godfather Series, Gladiator and Braveheart up there library sleeves. Tell me 4 BLURAY titles that can compete with these. Betcha you can't !!! Now hopefuly these titles would come out this 4th quarter.

Pulp, Dogs and Suspects are movies that I LOVE. (BLURAY exclusives) but it's not better than HD DVD's SCARFACE, GODFATHER, BRAVEHEART and GLADIATOR. I know it's a different genre for BRAVE and GLAD but these HD DVD's 4 trumps
BLURAY's 4. Donnie Brasco cannot be mentioned with the other 3 you named, PLEASE SEPERATE. BRASCO was just OK. FUGGET ABAT IT.

There are a lot of blu-ray movies on that list that I would buy, if I had a blu-ray player, which I don't, because they cost $500.
bboisvert 09-07-07, 09:29 AM HD DVD still has Scarface, The Godfather Series, Gladiator and Braveheart up there library sleeves. Tell me 4 BLURAY titles that can compete with these. Betcha you can't !!!
Everyone has different tastes, but it isn't fair to basically claim that BD doesn't have potential exclusives that can compete with HD.
Alien/Aliens, classic Disney/Pixar animation, Men In Black, The Sound of Music, James Bond films, Ghostbusters, Home Alone, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, Independence Day, Lawrence of Arabia, Passion of the Christ, West Side Story, Dances with Wolves, and on and on.
Not to mention the obvous Die Hard, Spider-Man, Pirates releases that are coming out.
You may not (personally) care about those films more than the 4 you listed, but there are PLENTY of great potential titles that are blu only at the moment. Most movie buffs would look at that list above and drool.
You've listed 4 solid titles up there, but I'd trade all of them for a definitive release of the Alien series in HD.
You've listed 4 solid titles up there, but I'd trade all of them for a definitive release of the Alien series in HD.
I sure as hell wouldn't. Not after seeing how Fox supports Blu-ray, anyway. Their HD transfers have been "iffy" at best -- even Ice Age 2, a straight digital-to-digital transfer, looks just average -- and they're insistent on using DTS MA which isn't supported by any player that I know of at this time, and won't be for some time yet. Add to that their ridiculous pricing and I'll pass. (The DVD of Aliens looks awful, too, so I'd LOVE for it to be done justice. :()
bboisvert 09-07-07, 01:14 PM I sure as hell wouldn't. Not after seeing how Fox supports Blu-ray, anyway.
Hence my use of the term "definitive"... meaning fantastic PQ/AQ, and including all of the great extras we've seen in the past on standard def. That's a dream release for me (and one that, as you mention, may be a long time in coming given Fox's patterns to date).
My general point is that it's absurd to say "BD's got nothing to compete with HD DVD"... just as it's absurd to say the reverse.
HD DVD has huge exclusive studios in Universal, Paramount, Dreamworks. But BD has Sony, MGM/Fox, Disney. That ain't too shabby either. ;) It's basically a tie at this point, with obvious exceptions based on people's individual tastes.
spectator 09-07-07, 02:11 PM That's a dream release for me (and one that, as you mention, may be a long time in coming given Fox's patterns to date).
All I want from the series is Alien, so I can see a loooooooong road ahead for me. Before I can get my hands on it, Fox will need/want to:
Start releasing on HD DVD
Start releasing some titles, period
Decide that they've waited long enough to release some Alien series material
Deliver the force-you-to-buy-all-four box-set-only release
Break that box set up into separate releases
Release the improved second-dip version with a better transfer, multiple versions and real extras
So, I'm guessing maybe 2013?
List updated to reflect the delayed release date of Sony's "Monty Python's Life of Brian."
rover2002 09-12-07, 12:47 PM That does not bode well for HD.

I heard a rumor that this title was cancelled. Can you point me to any reported confirmation on that?
(Incidentally, "Mater and Commander" is one of my wife's favorite shows. I wish this title would come to HD DVD. :()
jefflins 09-14-07, 04:55 PM I appreciate the time you spent (are spending) to put together the listing of the announced movies. I'm so sick of the "what an idiot" "this means nothing" etc comments. I swear I don't know what this format war has done to people...I'm beginning to think there are subliminal messages in that damned unskipable FBI warning...
Handy list, thanks!
bboisvert 09-14-07, 05:49 PM I heard a rumor that this title was cancelled. Can you point me to any reported confirmation on that?
I don't have an official cancellation (don't know if they even bother issuing those)... but there are very reliable people in the BD forum and on other sites that are claiming it is not coming out.
HDTVFAN0001 09-14-07, 05:54 PM I think that without the list reflecting those titles in dual format, the comparison list is pretty much of little value.
There will be an abundance of buyers for dual formats as well as exclusives.
Without that information, I suspect even the content vendors can't forecast results, let alone us. :D

How so? Dual format titles are by definition equal across formats, so there's no "comparison" there. The exclusive titles is where the differences (and value add) shows up.
How does it provide more value to see that Harry Potter or Omega Man is coming out on both formats? That doesn't tip the scales one way or the other.
(FYI, there's a thread in the HD software forum that tracks all releases across formats. That probably has what you're looking for.)

Thanks. I've been reading the same things. I just didn't want to jump the gun. I guess I'll be taking it off. I can always put it back on if it comes out.
Master and Commander removed based on fairly reliable rumors that it is not going to be released on October 2.

But the different formats for dual titles may not sell the same.
Having access to neutral titles also neutralizes much of the effect of having it in either format. Some will sell more in HD DVD, some not. So it makes no sense to look at just exclusives. If that was valid, then the overall sales comparison disparity would be much more drastic than it is at this time.
In other words, there's more to it than just the # of exclusive titles. Overall, both formats have about 330 titles at this time and are each growing in spurts that seem to continue their overall title numbers being pretty close to the same #. This has been the case for over 9 months now.

The title of the thread is "Comparison of Fourth Quarter Exclusives". I don't see how adding titles released in both formats will help you compare fourth quarter exclusives.

Did I miss something? Is this thread titled "Q4 format exclusives and how they will impact overall sales"? No it is simply a comparison of exclusives and has NOTHING to do with format neutral releases since they are by definition NOT EXCLUSIVE. If you want to discuss overall releases go into one of the numerous threads that cover that topic. If you want to discuss sales go into the official sales thread.
I don't understand the logic of coming into a thread about exclusive releases and then being critical of the thread starter because the thread only discusses exclusive releases.
List updated with Bandai Visual's November 27th release of "Jin Roh: The Wolf Brigade," Sony's November 27th release of "Paprika," and Disney's December 18th release of "Underdog."
List updated with Universal's December 11th release of "The Jason Bourne Collection."
List updated to reflect both the individual availability of the Die Hard movies and the inclusion of Live Free or Die Hard in the set (set changed from "Trilogy" to "Collection").
Paramount needs to start stepping it up with some catalogue releases as well. If they don't release anything than that announcement doesn't hold as much wait. I figured they would have some releases for the Holiday season.

I've been watching this since the start of the year, and the one clear thing is that the big titles matter.
We've had a couple of weeks recently where smaller new releases have counted for little - indeed, one week BD had 4 or 5 small new releases and HD DVD none, and the figures swung a couple of % to HD DVD.
Comedies and out-and-out kids films appear to do less well than action & sfx-based films. Catalogue titles don't do so well, but can do okay if they're big enough.
Oh, and TV series can do well, too - see 'Heroes'.
In that context, looking at big action/sfx films, we have:
HD DVD:
Transformers
The Jack Ryan Collection (dunno about this one - could do okay)
Face/Off (not too old, could do very well)
Battlestar Galactica: Miniseries & Complete First Season
Bourne 3 & boxed-set
Blu-ray Disc:
The Day After Tomorrow
Fantastic Four 2
Spiderman 3 & boxed-set
Prison Break
Die Hard 4 & boxed-set
POTC3
Lost Season 3 (will this suffer with the first 2 series not being out)
What with 'Tansformers' and especially 'Bourne 3' being so well received, and 'Spiderman 3', 'Fantastic Four 2', and 'POTC3' so poorly received, I think it looks very close indeed.
In addition, if 'Transformers' and 'Bourne 3', in conjunction with cheaper players, leads to a spate of PS3 owners going dual format, you can expect to see older HD DVD biggies getting a freash lease of life.
Remember, 'Batman Begins' is still in the joint high def Top 10.

I notice Shrek 3 hasn't been singled out as potentially significant. I certainly wasn't planning on buying it until I read all the incredibly cool stuff they are jamming into it.
'Shrek the Third' is also set to push the boundaries in terms of what's been offered as web-enabled content on previous HD DVD releases. DreamWorks says a number of additional exclusive features will be made available for download the day the disc hits stores, including a full-length subtitle trivia track, a movie guide with files on characters and talent in the film, plus an interactive coloring book feature that allows you to digitally paint your favorite scenes.
As previously announced, the disc will also provide users the ability to customize their own menus based on famous 'Shrek' characters. Once customized, the user's menu will become the default menu for the disc, even after it has been ejected from the player.

Some good discussion here and Steve boiled it down nicely... Blu-Ray may show more potential releases this winter in terms of numbers... but in my opinion... half of them do not even qualify as movies... I am a Blu-Ray owner, but I can not even begin to justify spending $30 on a bunch of movies that rate 5/10 when I can pick them up on DVD in the $5.99 bins. It is the blockbusters that will count, and IMO the quality of the HD Blockbusters and Catalog titles far outweigh what Blu-Ray seems to be bringing to the table.

HomerJay 10-03-07, 07:40 PM Well, it's not looking good for HD DVD... maybe we are missing something?I imagine they're just holding cards close to their chest. They is still ample time to fill in some of those blanks. We'll be busy with Transformers for a few weeks anyway with that second disc and all...;)
It's pretty even to the beginning of November. Sure, that's only a few weeks away...but so is Transformers and I'm sure there will be some press that week for related promos. Why not throw in a few titles, too?

Well, Samwise it is a valid (if somewhat inflammatory (because the truth hurts)) question. Fox has had trouble holding to its release schedule, but they did just recently come through with Fantastic 4: Rise of the Silver Surfer and The Day After Tomorrow, so maybe things are getting better with Fox. On the other hand, they did delay Master and Commander, so they are obviously still a bit spotty.
Time will tell on this -- it is too early to come to any good conclusions -- but I wouldn't be surprised to see more titles cancelled or delayed.
WirelessGuru 10-05-07, 03:47 PM I hate to say it, but even with Paramount going HD-DVD exclusive, the Blu-Ray exclusive release list has more material I prefer personally than the HD-DVD exclusive list. the only caveat is how many of Blu-Ray's announced releases will actually materialize?
Fox and Disney have been announcing release dates only to ditch them at the last minute since the beginning of the year. I will say that when an HD-DVD exclusive studio announces a release, they usually come through.

Most people will not pay 40-50 dollars for an import (me included) so I don't think they are true exclusive.
Now it come to me what is wrong with this list... NO IMPORT RELEASES.

You are not the first to suggest that I include imports. The problem with including HD DVD imports is that if they are out on Blu-ray, then the title simply disappears from the list (because the list is designed to show exclusives). But that would, somewhat artificially, make Blu-ray's list look smaller than it really is for the average consumer. (Not that I would lose much sleep over that, but, a modicum of fairness is good, too :)).
On the other hand, if the HD DVD import really is an exclusive, and I include it, then that would lead to suggestions that I should also include Blu-ray imports that are exclusive (and that are region free). I don't really want to do that, though, because it would be a hassle tracking down all of that information. (You see, I am just too lazy! :o)
One solution I've been considering is a notation next to any Blu-ray exclusive that is available to import on HD DVD. That way a person could see the list of exclusive titles that will be coming out for the average consumer, but still see that an import HD DVD is available if the title is exclusive to Blu-ray. (I wouldn't really feel obligated to note anything similar for Blu-ray imports, because, at bottom, this list is not intended to tout Blu-ray. To the contrary, I want to tout HD DVD. :D)
I'll try to get around to noting any available HD DVD imports of Blu-ray exclusives. But if you want to see all of the available HD DVD imports, you should probably check out an import thread.
Cheers!
Helvetian 10-06-07, 02:44 AM So then why is Rush Hour 3 up there? It's New Line and will come to HD DVD in early 2008? I guess exclusives for this quarter? Maybe add a note that says coming to HD DVD early 2008. You say you don't want to confuse consumers about imports and titles, so this is vital info so consumers are aware ;)
Titanic 20th Anniversary for DVD, I wouldn't be too surprised if Paramount decided to release it on HD DVD ;)

Regarding Rush Hour 3 (and, for that matter, Hairspray), you guessed it in one. This list is intended to show fourth quarter exclusives. I did think about including a note that these New Line releases would be coming to HD DVD in 2008, but I don't have any dates, and before Pan's Labyrinth was announced for both, any New Line releases on HD DVD were potential vaporware.
But you've convinced me. I think I will make that note now. :)

I think it's an important noteworthy piece of information, as it's a temporary exclusive and may perpetuate misinformation. New Line has established that they will indeed release these in 2008, so you would be providing fact. However I do agree that the studio or some official confirmation is needed ;)
I think the "purple notes" indicating imports and temporary exclusives are a good idea. It paints a more accurate picture of "real" exclusives.

coolhand 10-06-07, 10:55 AM Looks like blu-ray has more going for it the last 3 months (so far). HD DVD looks extremely weak right now- it seems like there was more released during the summer months. The bright spot is that most of the HD DVD titles are pretty solid.
I think there are a lot of people that see the almost 3-1 and hand it to BD. I much prefer quality over quantity and there are a lot of really lousy catalog titles mixed in that BD list. There are 4 HD releases I will buy and there is 3-5BD titles I would consider. But I am absolutely set on my 4 HD and would much rather have those than any 4 BD on here. There are several Warner titles I plan on purchasing as well.

I'm with you, coolhand. I really like the HD DVD line-up at this point, especially when you include Warner in the mix. One of the reasons I originally chose HD DVD was the exclusive content offered by Universal. I happen to like a lot of Universal releases, and, so, it was not a very hard decision. (And, of course, back then the decision was made that much easier by the relative cost of entering the two camps.). Also, now that Paramount and DreamWorks Animation have come over to HD DVD, I feel even better about my decision.
Must haves for me on HD DVD: Next (got it!), Transformers, Battlestar Galactica, Star Trek, Shrek the Third (and hopefully Shrek), and The Bourne Ultimatum.
I will admit, though, that there are some Blu titles that I wouldn't mind having. So, unless those studios come over (or unless I can snag them on HD DVD -- like I did The Prestige), I might one day have to buy a dual-format player.

I'm not that surprised. Ever since I started this list months ago, I thought that there would probably be delays on the Blu-ray side. I've heard too many rumors of production problems to discount them all, and Blu-ray's past performance (a definite pattern of announce and postpone) did not inspire confidence. In short, given the number of Blu-ray titles announced, I was pretty sure that something had to give. (I'm just surprised that more delays or cancellations have not come from Fox. Apparently they've improved! ;))
So, the ratio of the number of releases just improved in HD DVD's favor. :)
Edit: It's now being reported at Blu-ray.com that only "Monty Python's Life of Brian" has been delayed. The article at www.highdefdigest.com has not been updated with similar information (and, incidentally, High-Def Digest only reported that two tiles were being delayed -- Life of Brian and I Know Who Killed Me). I'll fix the list when I figure out who is right.
Edit 2: Ok, so it looks like only Monty Phython's Life of Brian is delayed. The other titles are going back on the list.

Paramount Recalls 'Jack Ryan' HD DVD
http://www.highdefdigest.com/news/show/Paramount/Technical_Glitches/Paramount_Recalls_Jack_Ryan_HD_DVD/1084
Thu Oct 18, 2007 at 12:00 PM ET
Following reports of a packaging error, Paramount has issued a recall of its forthcoming HD DVD release of 'The Jack Ryan Collection.'
As we first reported Tuesday, early copies of the highly anticipated release found their way into consumers hands earlier this week, but fans who were initially delighted to snap up a sneak peek began noticing something strange as they dived into the four-disc set.
Despite the "Special Collector's Edition" label clearly stamped across the front cover of each disc in the set, and a list of bonus features promoted on the box art (including audio commentaries, featurettes, and more), no one was able to find the advertised supplementary material on any of the actual discs.
As these reports began to surface, fan reaction was swift and predominantly negative in our forums area, with most wondering how a mistake like this could slip by the studio.
Today, Paramount has issued a street delay for the disc, and is asking all retailers return their stock to the distributor. No new street date has been announced, and at press time it wasn't clear whether the studio is planning to ultimately release the existing barebones discs with new corrected packaging, or with new feature-packed discs. We'll let you know as more information comes in.
The text of Paramount's email to retailers follows below:
Please be advised that there are typographical errors on the packaging for the Jack Ryan Special Collector's Edition HD-DVD. The packaging inadvertently notes special features that are not on the HD-DVD. As a result, this product is being recalled and street date is being delayed. We ask that you do not sell or rent this product to consumers and that you stop shipments to additional destinations. A Paramount Home Entertainment Representative will contact you with an RA number to facilitate sending the product back to Paramount Home Entertainment's manufacturing facility. Returned product should include any unit previously shipped to retailers or other destinations as well as your on-hand inventory. We will provide further information on the availability of new product shortly. Should you have any further questions, please contact a Paramount Home Entertainment Representative. We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused you.

So blu comes off with rumors and red stays on when a studio announces the title is being recalled before the release date? Oh well, doesn't make much difference I suppose, that list is still very blu...
Uh, this is an HD DVD thread, and I have never hidden my bias for HD DVD.
But, for what it's worth, I didn't remove any Blu titles based simply on rumors. The delays were reported in two different places (citing information from Sony), and the delay of the five Blu-ray titles was reported on Blu-ray.com -- hardly a source biased in favor of HD DVD. Thus, given the Blu source, I felt comfortable in removing the titles.
And you'll notice if you care to look, that I had already put the Blu-ray titles back on the list before you complained -- after reading from the same two sources that they have not been delayed.
As for keeping the Jack Ryan titles on the list, I only did so because there are a bunch of copies out in the wild. But it is perfectly clear from my notations that the titles have been recalled, and that they will not be readily available.
Try not to be so sad and bitter. :)

Yeah, I think there are two weeks worth -- I just haven't gotten around to it yet. I don't remember what the numbers were for the first week on this list, but the latest numbers came out today, and they were not so hot for HD DVD (I think it was 71:29 in favor of Blu-ray). No doubt about that. In fact, since a large portion of the BD "sales" last week weren't actually sales (since they were give-aways), I think it's pretty certain that HD DVD actually led in consumer sales for the week.
I'm reading in various places (like here (http://www.hometheaterforum.com/htf/showthread.php?p=3259417#post3259417)) that "I, Robot" has apparently been delayed until sometime in 2008.
Edit: Ok, High-Def Digest (http://bluray.highdefdigest.com/613/irobot.html) has also yanked it. Its release date is now "TBA," and it is listed among the many other postponed Blu-ray movies. It's coming off the list.

From what I read (I linked to it in my previous post), the title is not gone for good, just delayed until 2008. It looks like Fox is developing some interactive features for it (no barebones on this release), so maybe that has caused the delay. Edit: Here's an article at High-Def Digest. (http://bluray.highdefdigest.com/news/show/Fox/I,_Robot_Blu-ray_Delayed_New_Features_Promised/1120)
Incidentally, I like this movie a lot, and if I were a Blu-ray guy, I'd definitely be picking it up when it comes out. For now, I guess I'll just have to live with my SD DVD. :)
bboisvert 10-30-07, 06:38 PM ^
I'm not going to complain about a studio *adding* features (as I've been preaching that for months)... but this is a really odd decision on Fox's part.
They put out things like Robocop as bare-bones without blinking... but they delay a recent Will Smith sci-fi flick right before the holidays -- and, incidentally, right before *another* Will Smith sci-fi flick hits theaters. Seems like the cross-promoting/holiday sales would be more beneficial than delaying into 2008 for some features.
Again, not complaining... just wondering if any of these studios have a plan at this point. A lot of decisions seem random.
List updated with Universal's December 26th release of "Eastern Promises."
So, I guess Time Cop and Cat People weren't the last announcements for 2007. :)

~M~
JJohnson1701 11-02-07, 04:46 PM You misunderstood my point. It is an HD DVD / DVD combo. But there is no separate, individual standard DVD release.
So anyone who wants this -- including standard def people who do not yet have HD DVD players -- has to pick up the combo version. That's all there is.
Frankly, each of the HD-DVD studios should start releasing more combos, and preferably, only combos. That'd blow the water out of the BR argument of outdoing HD-DVD in sales each week.
bboisvert 11-02-07, 04:59 PM This is getting to be a habit, but... time to remove two more blue titles from the list:
