If you're not getting program guide data on the dvd recorder, one way to get it is to use a signal splitter to send a separate cable directly to the dvd recorder, and the other to the FTA box. If you're already got things set up this way, then, I don't know what to suggest. If this is a cable box, that should work. If it's a satellite box, then it may not.

The recorder is samsung dvd ar650 and the FTA box is viewsat xtreme.

Are you still having issues with the guide? Since it's a satellite box, you may not be able to receive guide data, but I don't have the Samsung ar650...Hopefully someone who does will see this and chime in.
