View Full Version : How to easily remove glue residue from HD-DVD/Blu-ray Cases
AccordTR 08-08-07, 08:21 PM Ok first off I'm very anal about my movies; I like the cases, art work, slips, etc. I EXTEMELY hate when you buy a new movie get it home, open it, and find that the crappy security has left glue residue all over your new movie. In the past this forced me to buy blank cases to swap to……………… BUT NOT ANYMORE.
Since I had a few ‘residue’ cases lying around I figured I would try a few different methods to get the residue off…. Ok I was really bored today.
First I tried rubbing alcohol, results were poor, smeared the glue more than anything
Second I tried Goo-Off and industrial cleaner, again not much help, mostly smearing
Finally I thought why not try to erase it… serious why not. So I grabbed a couple WHITE GUM erasers, I should note they were the soft kind, not the hard ones……… and WOW I could actually erase the entire residue without damaging ANY of the plastic. While it took a few minutes on each case, I managed to clean 6 today, now all look BRAND new.
Hope this helps anyone ‘anal’ like me.
Jamie
sivartk 08-08-07, 08:43 PM interesting, I just take my time getting the seals off and have never had any residue left.
Ergoguy34 08-08-07, 08:44 PM goo gone, nuff said?
Art Sonneborn 08-08-07, 08:58 PM Yea, I have three or four of those, a small thing but I still appreciate the input.

I was trying to clean mine the other day and my wife calming said, 'Just use some olive oil', I snickered to myself and then figured I had nothing to loose because I was having a bear of time getting the stuff off my Hot Fuzz case and low and behold gently rubbing the olive oil in took the messy goo off no problem... I think it goes without saying I took the insert out first and gave it a good rinse and let stand to dry afterwards.... sounds like the eraser may be a quicker, dryer, way to do this :) I'll give it a try next time.
Maxflier 08-08-07, 09:28 PM It always comes off fine for me just rubbing it off with my thumb.
timbobarry 08-09-07, 01:28 AM Yeah I have no residue from HD DVDs but I do get it from Blu-ray packaging.

JamieTx :) I have some SACD cases (the cases with the rounded corners) that need cleaning and will give this method a go.
lgans316 08-09-07, 04:34 AM Thanks for the tip. The best thing to do would be to ask your better half (Wife) to remove the security sticker.
put WD-40 on the residu for about 10 sec then wipe works on all packaging by the way
eapleitez 08-09-07, 11:17 PM I've noticed that some labels come off very clean, while some others come off very messy no matter how careful you are. I use oil, but an eraser sounds like a better way.
stevedvd 08-10-07, 09:35 AM You might also want to try some regular cheap pain thinner. I soak a little on a tissue, and it works fine for me. Good luck.
Just take some nail polish remover from your girlfriend/wife. I even use it to remove old county stickers from the car's windshield.
I use lighter fluid. It even works good when they've stuck a security black strip to the inside of a paper backing to say a box set like Rome. You have to let it soak in a few minutes, then re-apply a couple times. after 15 to 20 minutes the plastic thingie just lifts off effortlessly. The paper is unharmed and the lighter fluid evaporates completely in a couple hours even tho its soaked into the paper. The only side effect is on cheapy dvd cases it causes the outer clear plastic cover for the insert paper (on the outside of the dvd case) to sometimes wrinkle. But for paper sleeves over dvd's that have stickers on them like "20 minutes of deleted scenes!" I always remove all of them in this way.
When i get glue leftover on the top of a case from the label sealing the edge, I usually just try resticking down the label onto the glue bits and pulling quickly. Sometimes this works. If I have to use lighter fluid, i first take the paper insert out. Apply lighter fluid to a paper towel and wipe it off. Once its clean quickly dry off any that got on the clear outer plastic label cover. I think I'll try wd-40 on the clear outer cover, see if it avoids wrinkling

I've been pretty lucky with my cases. I usually take an xacto knife to the label first and then slowly peel away. Only 1 case had some residue left and it came off with a rubbing of my finger.
