It is better than Blockbuster. I just signed up for 1 at a time for $8.99. I wanted to test our their service to see if they are better than Blockbuster at sending out HD DVD movies. Sure enough they sent me the #1 movie in my queue which is Shooter. They sent it to me just hours after signing up. I will be going with Netflix with 2 or 3 at a time if they can send HD DVD movies like this and cancel my Blockbuster service.

Yeah, I live in the Chicago burbs as well and most of the time I've gotten what I've wanted most on my queue from our shipping center. I even remember getting one that was on "long wait" sent out unexpectedly.

I've heard that it gives priority to people who don't rent as much, so since it's your first rental you might have gotten first pick. Although Shooter shipped for me the day after I added it, and I'd say we go through about 8 movies/month here.

Yeah, netflix is treating you like a new girlfriend now. Just wait sooner or later your relationship will turn sour after they start throttling you. It's a metaphor so do a google search on netflix throttling.

Or we could just tell you that it refers to an aledged practice by Netflix where they slow down their response time (i.e. shipping) if you turn your rentals around very rapidly.

I find this to be true to a certain degree. My netflix honeymoon period seems to have come to an end. Long waits seem more common. Seems like switching back and forth between these services is the best way to go...they keep offering you deals to come back, and you get that honeymoon period back.

netflix limits your account if you send movies back "too fast" which means too often. Netflix purposely places you at the back of the line for the next movie in your queue. They were sued over this, but I have not received my free 1 month service, as part of the settlement.

They do throttle. Realistically you would have to be turning movies as fast as you get them to hit the threshold where that kicks in. In other words you would have to be cough watching cough 2 or 3 a night. I think if any of you have been throttled you probably know why I coughed. I can't really watch more than 1 a day but I can certainly turn and burn quicker than that.

If you're in it for hd and are doing nothing more than watching 1 a day you will get them as fast as you can watch them.

I've noticed the "throttling". I would receive a movie, watch it that evening, then send it back the next day. They would always send me an email a day later stating they received the movie back, so on average it was one day in the mail to get them the movie back. Lately it has taken an average of two days for them to receive the movies back now. Either the US mail has slowed down on it's delivery schedule (which I doubt), or Netflix is purposely delaying the movie returns...

I wonder if it has anything to do with the option you select. After about 4 months off, I signed back up with the 4-per plan, and I had movies as fast as I could watch them. I think I hit 23 movies in about 3 weeks, and was never throttled. I've since calmed down, but they still seem to be treating me well. Too bad Blockbuster shot themselves in the foot with the HD-DVD announcement and the "total choice" throttling. Gave me good reason to go back to Netflix.

They do give priority to new subs. I had wedding crashers on my list for a good 2 months. My sister joins and gets it right away. But then again that was when I was "watching" 6 movies a week. I have slowed down to watching about 6 movies a month and they treat me better. (notice no " "the second time)

not sure about this, I rent alot from them and got TMNT and Disturbia yesterday on HD-DVD. I get alot of HD-DVDS pretty quick, Blood Diamond has been on the top of my list but its still "long wait" sometimes I get movies even though it says that though. I love netflix.

I have the 3 movie plan and usually get 6 a week. and every time, I send it back they get it the next day and I get the movie the day after.

Gathering some of your posts in this thread it seems like its best to keep your account at 1 or 2 at a time then because if you rent heavy, then they push you back and don't send out your movies right away. I never knew about this "throttling". So, if I keep it at 1 or 2 at a time, hopefully I will be ok. I will upgrade my Netflix to 2 next month when I cancel my Blockbuster program (before I got an HD DVD player). I have been with Netflix before and they were good for a while, but then I started noticing it took longer and longer for them to send me movies. One time I waited 18 days for a movie! This was when I had 3 at a time with Netflix. I will experiment between the 2, but I think I will stay with Netflix for a while and see how they are.

I live in NY and I rent 4 at a time. Maybe you're right about the location, if not, they've got some explainng to do!
I bet it is the location. Busier and more populated areas that we live in will experience waits for movies.

Yeah, I was with Netflix last year and got an e-mail from them about this, but its been a long time since I heard back. Not sure if I qualify for this anymore since I canceled the membership earlier this year.

I really only find it to be true on "new releases" once in awhile. I go through about 15 a month and haven't noticed any real change with older movies. A little trick that I find works more often than not is to mail a movie or 2 back on Friday/Saturday. They then receive it Monday morning and ship you the next one in your queue. Just have the new releases you want in the 1st few slots and you'll get it almost every time. I live in St. Louis and we have a D.C. here, so maybe that helps too.

Thanks for the heads up!I'm a BlockBuster Total Access member, joined in November 2006, and I haven't had a problem with them sending me movies. I have the 3 rentals at a time program and I usually rent about 6 movies a week. I return them to the store and exchange them for new releases and keep the HD DVD new releases in my queue (as my local BB isn't one of the 250 that carry them). I don't always get the movies at the top of my queue, usually because they're new and have long waits, but I do usually get the movies in my top 5. Yesterday I went into my account and added TMNT, Darkman and Shaun of the Dead at the top of my queue and lo and behold they all shipped out to me last night! That's the first time I've had that many new(er) release HD DVDs at the very top of the queue shipped to me together.

I thought about Netflix but I really like the in store exchange program BB offers. Just my .02

Yeah, they send you what you want when you first sign up, but after a few weeks, they shaft you. I'm still waiting for shooter, blood diamond, 300... the list goes on. The movie they sent me last night was cracked (not hd-dvd, I can't get any hd-dvd titles, they are all long or very long wait) It was 105 yesterday, must have been the heat.

I'm really not happy with netflix though, hope they don't shaft you in a couple weeks.

Here is what Blockbuster Online lists for me on those titles:

Breach - Received it on 7/5/07
300 - Long Wait
Shooter - Received it on 8/6/07
Hot Fuzz - Long Wait
Disturbia - Available
Black Snake Moan - Short Wait

Based on this data, it looks like Blockbuster is better... Anyways things have gotten much better over the last couple of weeks... Either they are getting more inventory or a ton of HD DVD renters just jumped ship after the BB/BR announcement, so availability is better...

I'm on the 5-out Netflix plan since Feb 07 and I think I was capped last month. I'm 1 day away from the nearest depot and often send the stuff back the next day. I stopped sleeping much a while ago so I can get through 2-3 discs per night, especially if one is uninteresting and gets shut off.

Here's the top of my queue in order:

300
Very Long Wait HD DVD

The Host
Short Wait HD DVD

The Bourne Identity
Long Wait HD DVD

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
Long Wait HD DVD

Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within
Short Wait Blu-ray

Wild Hogs
Releases on DVD Aug 14, 2007 DVD

The Lookout
Releases on Blu-ray Aug 14, 2007 Blu-ray

What Dreams May Come
Releases on HD Aug 14, 2007 HD DVD

Immortal Beloved
Releases on Blu-ray Aug 21, 2007 Blu-ray

Black Snake Moan
Long Wait HD DVD

I included a few upcoming releases as proof that I have stuff queued weeks in advance and no longer get popular releases shipped for release day. Recent exceptions have been Purple Rain HD-DVD, Darkman HD-DVD and Roving Mars BD, but would anyone consider those as popular?

BTW, Wild Hogs isn't for me.

I've been a Netflix subscriber since June 2000. I use Netflix to supplement my recreational life (rather than define it) so I can't find the time to watch 6 movies a week. I have rented 300+ films so far from Netflix though - about one a week on average but I have peaked as high as 12 rentals in a month (3/week).

That puts me into a very slow category compared to the folks who want to game the system.

Netflix is a terrific business. They created a whole new niche of service (mailable rentals), refined it, added service and value, and led in that category for a long time, even successfully deflecting WalMart's copycat attempts for a time.

Netflix has provided me easy, ready access to otherwise difficult-to-find indy and foreign films, plus prompt availability of mainstream films (I did not have to wait for an HD DVD copy of "300" for instance and that is typical of my experience), a fun interface with space to create my own movie reviews and interact with community if I choose, and a very reliable product. I never experience throttling.

After my 7 years of more than satisfactory experience, I can only guess those who warn away potential new Netflix customers by claiming "Netflix will woo you, honeymoon you, then jilt you" are describing their own narrow experience of having tried to squeeze through as many films as is humanly possible - and then get surprised when Netflix gives priority to other subscribers who are also paying the same fee. Most subscribers don't experience throttling. They evidently use Netflix to augment their otherwise busy lives and enjoy it for what it is.

You would be wrong there. I too have been with Netflix for several years on the three at a time unlimited plan. We generally try to watch the three movies over the weekend, but rarely get to them all. This hasn't prevented Netflix from throttling our account. I haven't gotten a new release in a long time, much less in HD or BD.

The way I see it, if Netflix doesn't like people renting so many movies, they shouldn't offer plans that allow it. Of course, that would mean less revenue, so ultimately the customer gets screwed.

One question. Will your queue update from the DVD version to the HD DVD version of the movies when available? Some movies such as Bourne Ultimatum that are in my queue will be coming out on HD DVD. So, will it automatically update to HD DVD in the future or would I just have to re-add it somehow?

I'll have to accept that's been your experience. I'm sorry to hear about the bad experiences.

It has been said that the specific Netflix regional shipping center is a factor. You and I have both subscribed several years and aren't pushing a large number of titles through. Yet your experience includes throttling - and mine doesn't.

QUESTION: do you tend to churn (resequence) the titles near the top of your queue shortly before they ship? I recall reading in either AVS or Netflix' blogs that subscribers' next queue titles are preallocated by each regional center using predictive behavior algorithms, so that when the old rental is received by Netflix, the next title in the queue can be more likely to be ready to ship. Certainly makes sense if Netflix wants to improve turnaround and increase customer satisfaction, they'd manipulate each center's inventory so titles expected to ship from that center could be in place in advance. Conversely: if a customer edits the top of their queue frequently before the next shipment, that may throw a wrench into any predictive behavior software.

Why not google netflix throttling and you'll find throttling from netflix is more prevalent than you think.Believe me. I've read plenty about throttling, the lawsuit, and the endless complaints here in AVS about throttling. For years. In fact, here's an outside thread I found that goes far beyond the more polite discussion here in AVS - folks calling each other stupid, sarcastic, whatever.

Hacking Netflix.com (http://www.hackingnetflix.com/2005/06/netflix_tops_cu.html)

But if someone new to Netflix comes to this thread and read several posts saying NETFLIX = BAD, well, my experience has been quite the opposite and I feel there is room to share that experience, too.

As you suggested I googled but I chose "Netflix customer satisfaction ratings" (probably a neutral term - instead of "netflix throttling" on one extreme, or "in love with netflix" on the other). Result: the first full page came back with hits that stress a success story. Stories like this one:

Netflix tops customer satisfaction rating - Dec 2006 (http://www.infoworld.com/article/06/12/28/HNnetflixcdw_1.html)

So I don't know if my report is more "narrow" than the folks who have an equally important story to tell about their throttling experiences, but the surveys sounded pretty positive.

If you go through the profile change step where you declare HD DVD to be your preferred media format (or for those on the Blu Ray side, you would declare Blu Ray): then the answer is YES - all eligible titles already in your queue will AUTOMATICALLY switch from DVD to your new default choice. I was happy to find about a dozen titles already in my queue switched to HD DVD once I declared that preference.

This doesn't alter your DVD-only titles, nor does it change the sequence; it just makes the media type visible at a glance in your queue, with your preferred type already selected. It also gives you title-by-title flexibility: each HD DVD title in the queue has a drop-down that lets you optionally choose a different media type if available (DVD or Blu Ray).

Updates keep getting reflected, too. Just today I found a title in my queue where a new HD DVD version is going to be released. The media type now said "DVD" but it also provided the drop-down menu with these choices: keep the DVD version or select the future HD DVD version and wait a little longer. (I chose the latter.)

I joined Netflix in 1999 dropped them and rejoined a few times over the years with throttling as one of the reasons. I am currently with Blockbuster and I get excellent value for my 3 out at a time subcription. Which includes a coupon for a free movie or game each month and the total access program.

Nice, thanks! Thats what I was wondering. My question seemed a little off balanced as someone replied to me asking if I thought Netflix had a bunch of mind readers working for them. lol! I should have possibly worded it better. Thanks for answering my question.

Just signed up for Netflix with the 1 out at a time deal. They skipped right over my #1 and sent me the #2 choice. Even though they both said available now.

One question. Will your queue update from the DVD version to the HD DVD version of the movies when available? Some movies such as Bourne Ultimatum that are in my queue will be coming out on HD DVD. So, will it automatically update to HD DVD in the future or would I just have to re-add it somehow?

No, you have to change it. I had the Last Startfighter in my queue. Changed it to HD_DVD and it dropped down to the pending release list at the bottom of the queue page.

You had to manually change it since it was "pending" and not actually available yet. ;)

I've been with them for almost a year now and have been happy. Granted I'm no extreme renter. I don't really rent old movies but use them for my new movies. I have a ton that are waiting but they always have a new movie to send me as soon as they get one back so I have no issues.

I usually go through about 3 per week sometimes only 2. Really I don't have time for anymore.

They seem to be fast even after a year of service but I've never even come close to over doing it.

Did you go to your account and then to format preferences?
