I dont understand the impact of this statement from OPPO: "Compatible with CD-R/RW, DVD±R/RW and DVD+R DL* (*Note: Compatibility with user-encoded contents or user-created discs is on a best effort basis with no guarantee due to the variation of media, software and techniques used. For example, Discs recorded on some stand-alone DVD recorders or DVD camcorders may not exhibit smooth playback. )"
What if I made a permitted/authorized/legal copy or clone of a film onto DVD-R disk and burned via Nero etc - are there playback issues or cautions for the 980?

That's a standard disclaimer telling you they can't guarantee that the player will accept every possible media type. There are too many brands to test and some are just flakey. Try videohelp.com for player/media compatability reports.
I have used these successfully on the Oppo 971, 981, and 980:
CMC MAG. AE1 (Imation "Video" DVD-R)
RITEK/D01 (Memorex DVD+R DL)
TYG02 (Taiyo Yuden -R)
PRINCO (generic white label)
CMC MAG. (unknown)
MKM/001 (Verbatim DVD+R DL)
CMC00RG200 (unknown)
PHILIPS/041 (Philips DVD+RW)
YUDEN000/T02 (Taiyo Yuden +R)
...and have read that this works:
MCC-003-00 DVD+R Verbatim (8x)
The media I could not get to work was a batch of:
CMC MAG. AM3 (Memorex DVD-R)
After extensive reading in the cdfreaks.com blank media forum, I now use nothing but Taiyo Yuden for single layer. I have also switched from -R to +R. I use Verbatim for DL. I buy all these at rima.com.

Furthermore, it means that the software YOU use and how YOU use it can make a disc either playable or not playable in the 980 and that it can't "cover" every possible software/setting combination that exists.

Thanks both for the thorough replies and benefits of your experience. (As a devotee of cdfreaks, I am a TY/rima devotee also. ) OPPO it is!
