Hello, first post to this forum...

I am about to purchase a Philips DVDR3475 to go with my new LG 42" LCD. This setup is for a den (not a main TV). I have Comcast cable (analog/digital) with premium (HBO, etc.) channels from a cable box. The cable box takes RF (cable) in and has RF out and S-video out.

Here is how I plan to hook up the components:

Cable (wall - RF) --> RF in Cable Box/Cable Box S-Video out --> S-Video in DVDR/DVDR HDMI Out --> HDMI in TV.

I plan to use the DVDR to watch DVDs, as a simple recorder (rather than paying Comcast for another DVR or buying a DVR), and to convert a bunch of 8mm video tapes to DVD.

Questions:

- If it's connected like I show above, will it pass the cable signal through to the HDMI DVDR output? If so, will it upconvert the video to 1080p if I set the resolution on the DVDR to 1080p?

- Does the DVDR have to be powered on to pass the cable signal through to the HDMI output?

- Can I record HBO, Cinemax, etc. with the DVDR?

Thanks.

L. S.

Answers:

1.) Yes.

2.) Yes.

3.) Yes, if they are not copy protected. If they are, you will need a "filter" in between the tuner and the recorder, such as the Sima.

But you might wanna split the cable coax and put one feed directly into the RF input on the LG, so you can at least use it's internal QAM tuner to watch your locals in HD.

Thanks for the reply.

For my local stations, I am using an over-the-air antenna that goes directly into the RF input on my LG to get true over-the-air HD.

Isn't that the best way to get local HD?

Wow, 42" TV as _not_ the main TV!
