I always had this notion that Dreamworks was a subsidiary of Disney. I'm assuming I'm incorrect since Disturbia was released on both formats. What is the truth about Dreamworks?

It was Universal, now it's Paramount

Taken from Wikipedia

DreamWorks' animation arm was spun-off in 2004, into DreamWorks Animation SKG, as such it will remain independent of Paramount/Viacom, however its films will be distributed worldwide by Paramount.

Dreamworks never belonged to Universal. Their home videos were released through Universal, but Dreamworks studio was always independent. Now it belongs to Viacom, which owns Paramount.

Thank you very much guys, that clears it up. I would much rather have Pixar animated movies on HD DVD instead of Dreamworks however, but I will live.

Dreamworks is neutral (like Paramount), but Dreamworks SKG is a different company and has not made any commitment. It looks like Shrek 3 might not get released on either format with the DVD. If somebody has better information about these companies and commitments I would like to see it, but so far looks like the Dreamworks animation isn't committed to either one. I would like to get Over The Hedge myself.

Dreamworks Animation home videos are released through Paramount. So they are format neutral.

I want Over the Hedge too.

They are only format netruel if they release something, as it is, they are neither.
