View Full Version : XBR 970 + Xbox 360 = bad
elrechazao 08-09-07, 11:41 PM I get serious overscan issues on my 360. It's inputting through the component cables.
Essentially, the left side of the screen is cut off by about an inch to two inches in most games.
In movies and tv viewing I can't see noticeable overscan, but then its hard to tell since you don't know as easily in those things that there is a part of the picture cut off.
Any help on this? I'm stumped, and never done any calibrating of anything, so I have no idea where to start really, or if this is even fixable.

just found this, had to upgrade my search skills :0
will post if I have any issues in this thread I guess, thanks still to anyone who has comments about their success or failure with this method, thanks.
Wickerman1972 08-10-07, 01:34 PM Yeah, 970s tend to have pretty dramatic overscan at the factory settings. The only way to fix it is to go into the service menu and adjust it. This is easier said then done though as there are two different sets of menus to get it truly right. The MID menus are resolution specific and you can mess up your PQ if you don't get it right. Then there's the set of menus that start with a 2 ( I forget offhand exactly what it's called but I think it's 2-10D-something or the other. ) and the settings in there affect all resolutions. If it were just one set of menus to adjust it doing so would be easy. But having two sets of them makes it more tricky than I initially thought it would be.
elrechazao 08-10-07, 10:38 PM can I adjust the settings for a single video input (video 3, my component input) only? Or does a settings adjustment adjust over the entire TV?
scarekrow 08-13-07, 10:44 PM i have scan problems with the ps3 but its shrunk on the left and right sides by about an inch, this is with ps2 games, the ps3 games played seems to be fine and no overscans i can tell with a 360 game, movies are fine, tv is fine, its only the ps2 games played with the ps3..weird.
STEVE050 08-14-07, 12:54 AM I had to adjust this same prob in a customer's home. It's width was about 1" over the right side and a bit too tall. All of this was gauging an XBOX360 NBA2K7 game compared with the pix it produced on an LCD flat panel. It was also OK on HDcable and DVD 480p.
He couldn't be satisfied and he kept poiting out what doesn't look right while I was trying to adjust it. It even looked right on my test crosshatch generator.
Anyways, I ended up reseting all adjustments to factory recommended default, and then just minor tweaks after that. He was still not totally satisfied, but what did he expect comparing the geometry of a CRT to a flat panel.
There seems to be a difference in the sync signals from HD game boxes compared to TV boxes. Seems the factory doesn't set them up for these game systems.

Hmmm...that must be the key to so many complaints over the 360/PS3 being offcenter and overscanned on many CRT models. Thanks for that summary!

I hope that works. My PS3 cuts off the titles on fighting games like Tekken and Puzzle Fighter. Oh it'll do it to others, but it kind of slaps you in the fact when text is cut off. Occasionally, the bottom and top text is sliced off to due to this problem.
