I just got PS3. finally. my question is this:

Assuming I plug my modem into a router, and then feed the internet from there into my computer as well as out to the PS3, is the PS3 safe from viruses, malware, intrusion, etc etc etc or do I need to take precautionary measures somehow to keep the PS3 safe?

thanks.

oh and what is "folding?" thanks again.

Hmmmm, that's an interesting question. I never really thought about it, but I never use the PS3's internet capabilities too much. My guess is that it probably wouldn't be much of an issue, most viruses target Windows, i think.

Folding describes the Folding@Home project run by Stanford (i think it's stanford). Basically, they're trying to get a few thousand PS3's online and running their app, which simulates the many thousands of ways proteins can be folded in three dimensional space. The data generated is used to study the causes and possible treatments of diseases like alzheimers.

I don't think anyone is going to try to tell you that "your PS3 is safe, don't worry about it." But keep in mind that in order to write a virus (or malware of just about any kind) for the PS3, the programmer would have to not only know how to program for the PS3, but would have to have knowledge of it's infrastructure so as to be able to compromise some sort of weakness. It seems fairly improbable that someone would be able to do that when game developers still can't program effectively for it - and they get all the info there is to be had.

And yeah, folding@home is pretty sweet, lets all cure cancer with our PS3!!

The PS3 is immune to the virus and malware floating around out there. You don't need to give them a second thought. If you are worried about intrusion, routers have built in intrusion protection, so you are covered there too. Just relax and enjoy your movies and games.

Most virus are Windows based, currently we have nothing to worry about. Not saying it isn't possible but nothing to worry about now.

There is no chance of your PS3 getting a virus at the present time.

The day we actually do see a virus for the PS3 (in the XMB, not linux) would be a happy one, because that means running homebrew in the XMB would be possible.
