is the PS3's hard drive ata-6 or sata? im planning to upgrade my hard drive and want to know what type to get. and if it is sata is there a way to plug an sata cable in there to attach to a larger 3.5 in drive?

sata laptop drive 2.5 inch (5200 rpm, if you want same rpm as stock drive).

And yes, there are kits that allow an external sata 3.5 inch drive to be connected to the internal connector.

Just to avoid confusion, it's 5400, not 5200. You won't find 5200 drives, and I didn't want you thinking the PS3 drive was something special. The point is that 7200 is not good, so stick with 5400.

Might I recommend this drive:

Why go with 5400 RPM or 7200 RPM when you can go with 15,000 RPM? ;)

Because it would cost a lot more, use more power, generate lots more heat, and offer a negligible to non-existent performance increase when used on the PS3.

Good to know, thanks.

anyone have a name for that kit? the name of the cable?

Complain about everything why don't you. 3 extra watts of power going from a 5400 RPM HDD to a 15,000 RPM HDD, OH NOES!

"offer a negligible to non-existent performance increase when used on the PS3"

I beg to differ! It might not be as considerable as say putting it into a computer for obivious reasons, however who are you to say that it would have "non-existent performance increase"? I am guessing since you are AVS not only do you 'possibly' own a HDTV and PS3 since you are in the Playstation part of the forum discussing the PS3. I wouldn't think $300-400 HDD would seem that unreasonable for people here which this is a place that discusses high tech gagets. I consider the pros of the HDD far out-weigh the cons, in my opinion. Weather there is a performace increase or not we don't know. No one has done any testing with at 15,000 RPM HDD only with a 7200 RPM HDD. Maybe I will pick one of these bad-boys up one day and test for myself. Anyway my comment was just meant as a joke. Hence the smiley. ;)

5400 RPM Seagate(60GB)
Average latency 5.6 msec
Random read seek time 12.5 msec
Random write seek time 14.5 msec
Average seek power 2.20 watts
Cache 8 MBytes

15,000 RPM Seagate(73GB)
Average latency 2.0 msec
Random read seek time 2.9 msec
Random write seek time 3.3 msec
Average seek power 5.8 watts
Cache 16 MBytes

Even those statistics you posted don't mean there will be a performance increase. The only possible time you'd notice it is when moving large amounts of data to and from the hard drive. Most of the time the PS3 accesses the hard drive it is playing music or a movie that simply runs at a given bit rate well under the 5400 rpm drive's rate. Also, the numerous games I have on the hard drive have almost zero load time to them. Shaving 40% off of 2 seconds will not be noticeable at all.

Have fun with your test.

im pretty sure having a 15k rpm drive inside the ps3 would cause its internal heat to sky rocket, and that outweighs any benefit of it.
but if you wanted every second to count, then wire it to an enclosure on the outside. it might speed up the load time of Warhawk if you choose to download it to your HDD :-P

I will have fun with my test, don't be jealous.
