Noticed 2 times yesterday that a Toshiba 34 inch was missing colors after turning on. It was like all the red was missing from the screen. Turning off and on resolved the issue.

The tube is almost 3 years old. Is this common? Is it a sign of more bad things to come?

Maybe it's time to use the warranty and get someone in to check it out. The only issue is that it's only happened a few times and not every time.

Any tips?

You had to make me go dig up the manual didn't you :) It's a 34HF81. Does it make a difference actually?

Bowmah,

Are you on a source that is component video? Are the flesh tones blueish?
Sounds like red video component cable intermittent/ cable falling off on back.

Is that it?

Good point. It could be the cables. I think I noticed that even cable TV was "washed out" but I can't remember exactly. I will have to see if this happens again and check to see if it also happens with cable.

By the way, I don't have real component cables. I was at Radio shack and one of the supposedly audiophile sales techs told me to save some money and buy a set of 3-cables that were supposedly as good or better than their component cables. They are pretty wide in diameter and I have been using this for 3 years now with no issues. Maybe it's time to buy come real component cables?

By the way Steve, thanks for the reply. I was a little irritated since the last poster maded me dig up the manual but did not reply back :)

Cables used doesn't matter, except pretty much mechanical quality of them. As long as signal 1out goes to jack 1in,etc.
What is scary about high-priced cables is that some are so so tight fitting that you risk breaking the solder joint connecting the jack to inside TV circuit board; unless you twist the cable on while you push it on.

If it's not component input that is missing 'red video', then it's not a connecting cable issue; something else IMO.

I asked because there were two manufacturers making Toshiba 34" CRT TVs, and neither one is identical. Each has its own service design. Since your TV is made before 2005, I can safely assume that you may not have connected the component cable right, or loose soldering connection at the component video input due to abuse. If it's made after 2005, it's probably a failing electric part inside the TV.

Hey thanks for the info. I hope it's a loose component cable but I was almost 100% sure it also happened when I switched over to cable as well (and cable is using the normal coaxial that comes out of the wall).

So why the 2005 border? Do post 2005 units have a high failure rate?

Thanks for any info you may have.
