I am about to receive my new hdtv (samsung hlt-5689s) which is an HDMI 1.3 compliant device (deep color etc.) and which only has a toslink audio out, I am also planning to purchase a ps3 as a blue-ray player; my receiver is a panasonic xr-57, which is only hdmi 1.1 compliant and would not pass through 1080p.
As far as I can think I have four theoretical connection options of which only the first two are practical.
- ps3 -> hdmi -> tv -> toslink -> xr57
this would be the easiest for me, and with the highest video quality, however I am wondering about how it would work if I purchased a blueray with audio in one of the newer uncompressed or high bitrate formats: how would it work over toslink (which is b/w limited?). I am also wondering about having read somewhere that in this case the tv would ONLY pass through 2-channel audio
- ps3 -> toslink -> xr57 / hdmi -> tv
this way there would be no tv decoding issues, I read that the ps3 does output sound over toslink even when connected over hdmi
- ps3 -> hdmi -> xr57 -> hdmi -> tv
this would likely be the best connection audio-wise, although I am wondering if my receiver would be able to cope with the new formats. On the other hand losing 1080p/24 would be a non-starter for me
- ps3 -> hdmi splitter -> xr57, tv
this would theoretically be the best of both worlds, but I don't think I've ever seen a reasonably priced hdmi 1.3 compliant splitter out there...
Basically to sum it up, if a movie had audio options for trueHD etc. in addition to a 'standard' soundtrack, would the tv/ps3 be able to decode trueHD and re-encode over the max toslink-supported format (probably dts 96/24)? or would this be a no-no and the tv would be able to pass through only, say, dd pl II or something.
I do want the max video quality possible, but I also would like to continue using my receiver if at all possible, and not end up *losing* audio quality compared to standard def dvds...
