View Full Version : PS3, Netflix, and watching movies on your computer
cdogg44 08-12-07, 10:38 PM So I've had Netflix for about a month (and honestly don't know if it will make it another month...my last movie was "supposed" to be here Thursday...), but I've noticed that you can watch movies on your computer. I haven't tried this on my PC, but it's got me thinking...can I apply this to my PS3 and watch these movies on my HDTV with 5.1? Any idea on quality?
My only guess (and I've yet to try it) is log onto Netflix using the browser, then play the movie off of that...any ideas?
I assume you mean the on-line streaming netflix allows?
If so, don't bother with it. It's a window within your browser and even the high quality streaming is ALOT worse than regular DVD, never mind blu-ray.
In terms of whether or not it's possible, just give it a try. Go to Netflix.com on your PS3 browser and see if it runs out of memory running the page, as it often does.
PS3 browsing capabilities are pretty limited also.
It will not be in HD and you will not have 5.1 sound. A regular Blu-ray disk is anywhere between 10-15GBs there is no way you can stream that much data in real time.
Mattardo 08-12-07, 11:20 PM About the only use I've gotten outta the Netflix watch now is watching old crap where I don't care how ****** the framerate is or details or the lack of good sound. It's pretty much stuff I wouldn't waste a rental on. AS for the regular service, it's pretty good, and usually is quite fast. Every once in a while, they take longer than usual....
ryansmith111 08-13-07, 11:41 AM I love Netflix! I've been a subscriber for a couple years now. I subscribe to 3 at-a-time and watch a lot every month. There have been at most 3 movies that I didn't get when expected. Turnaround time can vary based on how close to the distribution center you live. Most of the delays I've had are on Saturday, and I think its the postal carrier being lazy, as I've anecdotally heard that they don't deliver much 2nd class mail like magazine subscriptions and the like on Saturday. I've had friends confirm the same thing.
I do use the 'Watch Instantly' streaming movies occasionally. It helped pass the time when I was home sick for several days. They aren't the latest releases, but there are some good movies to be found. It will show you a list of movies available to 'Watch Instantly' that are in your movie queue. There are also TV-series available, like The Office season 1 and 2.
A couple things to note:
Video Quality - The video quality will vary based on your network connection - if you don't get 'High' then it will definitely not look good. Sometimes theres a network hiccup and I don't get high. I just stop and restart and then high kicks in.
Even at 'High' the PQ will depend on how well your display displays SD content. My Panasonic plasma does pretty well with SD, so I find the quality to be near-DVD.
Full-screen - the player does have a full-screen mode.
IE-only - the player requires IE, so no PS3 browser or linux playing. I have an HTPC that I use to DVR OTA HD.
thowe21 08-13-07, 11:55 AM You can not watch "Watch Now" on the PS3 due to the fact that the service requires a plug-in which the PS3 will not accept. Any flash plug-in type webpages are SOL on the PS3, which leaves out like every streaming web page besides youtube.
Daekwan 08-13-07, 11:56 AM Damn IE only..
I was thinking about subscribing to this..
Either way I still occassionally hook my laptop up to my 50" plasma using the docking station.. so its no biggie to watch them straight off the computer..
Mindwarper 08-13-07, 01:01 PM Its lower then sd. Why bother? Although I have watched some tv shows via internet. Cbs sometimes forgets to add commercials. Kinda cool. But low res.
ryansmith111 08-13-07, 01:33 PM MS Live has HD movie downloads. Sony is bringing DVR functionality in 2008. Sony has also said there will be fireworks at the Leipzip GC later this month. How cool would the fireworks be a deal with Netflix for movie downloads?
ryansmith111 08-13-07, 01:36 PM Leipzip
You all know about Leipzip, right? The next-gen zip format to enable HD movie downloads in < 10 seconds?
I bet you thought I meant 'Leipzig'. :)
pedrojunkie 08-13-07, 03:23 PM watch it now is great when on the road or stuck somewhere where you have internet service with nothing to do. I've done it a few times sitting in a hotel room or a function hall with WiFi and watched some tv show or something while i wait for my schedule to roll around. Better than guessing what dvds you might want to watch on the trip and lugging them around only to decide you aren't in the mood.
Its a relatively new service and its not great quality now, but I'm sure it will get better in the future. Perfectly good for laptop viewing, but I wouldn't blow it up to tv size. I hope they do a moviebeam sort of device in the future that will bypass the pc completely and just let you do an on-demand service you plug into the tv.
IMO netflicks is garbage compared to BB all access. I had both, then stuck with BB and will never look back. Movies come MUCH faster than flix did, on time, i can return in store for a new movie and get a free game rental once a month.

Good for you.

It depends where your at I think.
Netflix is much faster here than Blockbuster is.

Ditto - I've tried both, and I virtually always get the fastest possible turnaround from Netflix (i.e. put return in the mail Monday, they receive and send next Tuesday, I get the new disc Wednesday.)
With BB I often had to wait an extra day or two.
Netflix has expanded their distribution centers, and I often get surveys from them asking when I mailed a return or when I got the new one so they can maintain their quality.
A free game rental per month would be nice, but trading in for an in-store rental sucked when I tried it. It reminded me why I switched to Netflix in the first place - I hate the lines, the poor customer service, and the need to return a movie to the store.
