I have a 2001 Sony Rear Projection TV. I don't remember the model number off hand. It only does 480p and 1080i. It also only has component cable connections. I would like to get the PS3 to play games and it seems that should be fine on my tv. The question I have is running Linux on the PS3 on the tv. Does anyone have experience running linux for PS3 on an older RPTV set?
I am mostly interested in if text is readible, is there a problem with overscan? Will I be able to adjust the video if there is overscan? I would be mostly using to stream video and maybe some web surfing.
Thanks!
When I first got the PS3, I had to run Linux on something like a 30 inch SDTV. I could barely read anything but at the time it didn't matter because all I was using the TV for was launching SSH. From that point on I did everything from PuTTY on my PC. Yours would probably work in a pinch but I don't think you would get much use out of it as a desktop computer.
When I hooked up the PS3 via HDMI to my new Westinghouse 1080p display, it because crystal clear. Just like using a regular PC.

I'm hoping some one can tell me how it looks at 1080i on the rear projection. It should look 100x's better than on SD. I love the picture on my RPTV, I'm just wondering how the video scales.
You can set 1080 as the native rez from Linux. Would it still need to scale?

Don't know that is why I am asking. I have hooked up a computer to the RPTV using RBG to component cables and have tried the ATI HDTV adapter, but I was never able to get the resolution needed to reduce overscan and get a crisp output. I was hoping the PS3 would be smarter about it and would have a native setting for it.
I guess, I'll just have to buy one and find out. :)
Linux on the PS3 has a native overscan mode but it's not perfect. In fact it defaults to overscan mode unless you force it to full screen mode.
