View Full Version : PRO-150FD - Oh Yeah!
phraakman 08-13-07, 02:32 PM Long time lurker - First time poster (AVS club member).
Thanks everyone for all the good info over the years. Yet again, you helped me with my decision. I finally found what I deem a solid replacement for my 2nd gen 36" XBR CRT. (you may not like the crt - but this one is a solid performer)
I won't bore anyone with the details, but I just put money down on a PRO-150FD and I am fired up. Should have it within the next 2-3 weeks. I went with a local group here in Phoenix, AZ - Walts TV - they are an authorized Pio dealer and cut me a super great deal on the unit. Which was great because as bottom line oriented as I am, I do like to support local business.
I will be mounting with the Sanus VMDD26B.
Stoked! :D
EHughes 08-13-07, 02:53 PM Did they have one on hand for you to view or is this a pre-order?
I am struggling with the decision between the PIO's 60" 1080p 6010FD which has some availability and waiting for the Pio Elite 60" 1080p PRO 150HD.
Did you consider the 6010fd?
What are the main differences between the sets?
Thanks,
E.
phraakman 08-13-07, 03:03 PM Yo E. I did (briefly) consider the 6010 but I did not want to limit the tweaking capabilities of my new set. I picked the 150FD because it has better tweaking capabilities for calibration (along with a handful of other goodies that have been outlined many times throughout this forum).
No they did not have one for me to look at, I'm not sure anyone does. But after extensive research I am confident that this will be "THE" tv for the next season.
Guess we'll see (pun intended!)
**Edit**I looked at the price difference between the two sets and averaged it across the lifetime of the unit and found the cents/day difference negligible - that is why I didn't think twice about the 150FD.
EHughes 08-13-07, 03:18 PM Thanks for the reply Phraakman.
I'm new to the forum.
Could you point out where I can find the differences between the two sets detailed?
Thanks,
E.
phraakman 08-13-07, 03:50 PM I know I've seen it other places, but check the 2nd post on "The Official Pioneer 8G KURO 'Professional Review' Discussion Thread" It outlines differences between the two.

LOL - Until then I have this...
I see you have some issues with contouring and your bezel, well, it ain't shiny!
I like the set-up. I'm big on pushing the horizontal aspect of plasma set-ups. When you get your set, it will really look very hot the way you have organized your space.
EHughes 08-13-07, 08:41 PM Thanks Phraakman & dssturbo1.
I'll have to pour through the differences to see if Elite is worth the additional wait and dollars.

cubby205 08-23-07, 02:50 PM I am a lurker of several months also trying to decide between the 6010 and 150. I can justify $1,000 maybe $1,500 more for the elite, but if I can't find an authorized retailer offering a discount on the elite that is similar to the 6010 mark down currently available, my decision will be easy. I am upgrading a phillips 55pp9701, that has served me well, but is ready to be upgraded.
I am going to be cramming the tv over a fireplace. My space is only 7 inches taller than the tv, so its going to be a tight fit. I haven't figured out where I'm going to put my center speaker, and have thought about getting a 50", but decided that I would much rather go up 5 inches than down 5 inches. Part of the justification for the plasma is to free floor space, but because the tv will be so high, I am also in the market for recling sofas.
I wanted to also take this time to thank you guys for your expertise. I had been blown away by the fhd1 and was very close to buying one several months ago. I was talking to a salesman at the local tweeter, who of course, was pushing this set hard. I told him that I wanted to wait for the new models to compare and he assured me that the new pioneer would not be much different from the fhd1. He said that there was not much more improving that could be done. Lol. I asked him about black levels and he said that thats just a shortcoming of plasma that we have to accept. Shortly after, I found this website and started learning about the new kuro models. Needless to say, I am very excited about the fact that I will be able to get a 60" that is better than the fhd1 for less money. Thanks again guys.
mule.variant 08-23-07, 05:35 PM .....I am also in the market for recling sofas.
Off topic, but I have one of these. I have back issues and this is the only couch I can sit in for more than an hour. It is oh-my-god comfortable.

phraakman 08-24-07, 05:04 PM They are expecting the call from the distributon group any day now. I am at the top of the list so I am expecting the 150FD by mid-week next week!
The guys at Walts just got back from their Vegas buying trip and said they saw the 150 and it is super! I am coming unglued.

Justin Credible 08-24-07, 07:36 PM I ordered mine yesterday. Should be here in a couple of weeks. Now I have to decide on a program source. Cable, because it's Comcast here, is out as far as I'm concerned. I think I'll stay with Dish...seems to have better HD programing than Direct.

Nambit,
It is the same as you posted. I have a PDF which marks the Elite exclusive features as well but I have that on a computer that I won't have access to until Sunday or Monday. I think it covers all the same stuff as your list though.

It pushes a bit out of the box, the break in disk will change some of that I think. I hope D-nice gets his hands on one soon so I get his 150 settings. I'll be playing around with this a bit more over the weekend.
I've tried out a few diff. inputs and of course the HD is stunning and surprise me, even the junk seems good. Truely, I'm most surprised by how well it handles SD stuffs.
It has the deepest field of view I've ever witnessed from a PDP. Like a cool tromp de l'oeil it's a window into different worlds.
(I'm thinkin I'll have to get skin-a-max cuz that is an interesting world.)
So, we all know the wife factor. This bad boy is so good and impressive she is still stunned. I might not hear about it until next, next month! ROFLOL
The folks I purchased from were awesome. Even though I'm not an pro sports player or a 'big rich' type I still was granted top of the list. The price was right and they delivered when they said they would. Not a nick on the box. etc. Thanks Walts!
Right now it is running the break in disk, so if I still did the drugs it might be cool to watch. (j/k I inherited a terrible sense of humor and couldn't resist)
OMFG - next up on my life list:figure out how I wil race in the Gumball 3000.

break that bad boy in and give us some reports and pics.
Just got an email from an Elite dealer that he received his first two Pro150FD yesterday and already shipped out to the first two buyers on his preorder list, more good news as it seems Pioneer is getting them out ahead of schedule like the other models. Yesss......

Honestly, you might want to rent a cube-van. I remember being surprised
on how big a box for a 52 inch Sharp LCD was. It would barely fit in a
minivan, and you're dealing with a much larger monster - a 60 inch Plasma.

Thanks! I was afraid of that. The height of the box would be nice to know - I have a possible as far as a small enclosed truck. Thanks again.
HiDefjunky 08-30-07, 03:05 PM Okay,
I have decided on the Elite vs. the 6010. I am ready to purchase. I want the 60" 150HD along with a one or two year extended warranty and a tilt mount. Will the tilt mount be far enough off the wall so the TV can breath?
That is, will the tilt mount result in 3.5" clearance from the wall?

dssturbo1 08-30-07, 03:21 PM salti, i'm sure your dealer is a good guy but suggest you check the glass before you leave his store. or get verbal agreement direct from him he will cover it just incase the worse happens and you check it when you get home and it is cracked so he can't blame you for it cracking between his store and your home. just covering bases, congrats on the Elite :).

Jeff,
Thanks! That 62 11/16" isn't gonna squeeze into my van's 40" opening height.
I asked the following on another thread, sorry to double up. Are there hand-holes or similar that would permit two people to lift the set into a cargo van or pick-up truck?
EDIT: I misunderstood. They will deliver the set. They weresupposed to receive a 50" tomorrow. It arrived today. Maybe mine will make it tomorrow instead of Tuesday after Labor Day. Might get to watch the Redskins game.
SaltiDawg 08-30-07, 03:37 PM hidef, ima no dealer but i did send you a pm.

Great idea! I'll make sure one of those two things happen! When he said, "No delivery." I thought that you can't beat that. Now I understand that he really did mean, "No delivery." :)
EDIT: I misunderstood. They in fact will deliver the set for me.
Great price even if I end up needing to rent a truck.
barry728 08-31-07, 04:02 AM The Pioneer website mentions the elites have an option of having an ISF professional calibration. Does this cost extra, how much and is anyone getting one?
Anyone know of a dealer in southern California that might be discounting a Pro 150fd any time soon?

Yes it costs extra. Usually the amount charged for a ISF calibration, is somewhere around $200-$400.

There are some great threads on this topic, and there is also an area on the AVS Forum for ISF Techs to introduce themselves. I advise you to check around first and do a little homework as all ISF Techs are qualified/certified, they are not created equal.

shaolin_master 09-08-07, 06:43 PM Been along time reader/Lurker of this forum, so first off thanks to all those who offer the vast amounts of Info...
Me and the Wife are having a house built, (almost done Oct 12th we move in) so we decided to shop for plasma to put above the Fireplace. All i've heard about was Panasonic, Panasonic, Panasonic in regards to plasma's for the last two years until i recently looked at this forum again and saw the overwhelming interest in the Pioneer.
Anyway to make a long story longer we stopped off at a few of the local retailers, Ultimate Electronics and Best Buy to look at the Panasonic's and Samsung's and basically had the wife convinced to get the Samsung 63". You know how that goes... "why does it have to be so big? why is it so expensive? Can't we just get a 50"?"
Well after she caved and realized that we'd be spending a big chuck of change on a TV i said "Well... lets make one more stop at Best Buy to look at the Pioneers." As i headed over to give the sales guy his tape measure back so we could leave she came over and said.. "What is THAT!??! that has the best picture i have ever seen and it blows away the two TV's we were looking at." and pulled me over to this TV... I look and Low and behold... Pioneer Elite 50" Pro150. All i have to say is... WOW... so we booted over to Best Buy cause they have a lot more of the Pioneers and i can't believe how into it my wife was. :D
Anyway we talked to a sales guy at the Magnolia in the BB (who actually was pretty knowledgeable and not cocky at the same!) Anyway we looked at the 6010 which was priced at $6147 and he said he'd give it to us for $5750, install for $100 and a really nice Wall mount that has tilt that's usually $300 for $225.
Now for 2 questions's.
1. Is that a good deal for this set... from what i've seen i think it is.
2. What Wall mount that tilts would you guys recommend?
Thanks in advance for any info you can lend. I've been out of the home theater bit for a few years, well 8 to be exact. That's when we got married and bought our 32" sony CRT, Boston Acoustics 5.1 set, and Sony ES receiver...
dssturbo1 09-08-07, 07:25 PM the Pro150FD is 60". the Pro1150 and Pro110 are the 50" elites.
you can get a much better deal through the forum sponsor like roman at Invision on the 6010 saving you a good thousand$++ or so total. the bb guy is basically giving you 11.5% off msrp which if you get a bestbuy reward coupon you can get 12% off so it is a very average deal nothing special even from bb. 5750 then add tax right?
you can find a tilt mount at another sponsor monoprice.com for under $65

You can buy that exact set, the Pio 6010 for about $1500 less than the quote you got from BB. Check the forum sponsors here.
Spending about $6K for an Elite 150FD is a good price since they've just been released.
Check the www.Pioneerelectronics.com website for Pioneer dealers in your area; you're bound to have a couple in a city your size.

I was interested in projectors until I did my homework (and also got some
input from a friend who has one). Bottom line is that they're not as convenient
or as good as a flat panel. From lower contrast/colour vibrance to issues
with placement (angles, and height) and audible noise. Also, unless you plan
on getting very dark curtains, they're not so great for daytime viewing, even
with the advanced screens. Sure, they're good, but it's probably better to get
a 70" SXRD or DLP set if you want something that big.

You thought the pio picture really outperformed the sammy 63?
Cilent1 09-08-07, 09:45 PM He's not the only one ;).
You thought the pio picture really outperformed the sammy 63?
Are you shocked? One thing the Sammy 63 still seems to have issues with is
processing. Damn, I saw a Panasonic right next to the Sammy and while I saw
a bunch of checkers and such on the Sammy during fast scenes, there were
no issues with the Panny. The guy in the store said he's got a sammy plasma
and the processing is pretty bad. Originally I was thinking the sammy over the
Panasonic because still pictures seemed to look better (not to mention the
better blacks and more punchy overall picture), but the processing really killed
the deal. Now I'm going for the Pioneer 150FD.

On the contrary, I was deciding for a long time between the Sammy and the Pio but I just put a order in for the 150FD :D. I haven't seen the 150FD in person yet but the reviews I am hearing have been great. I did see the sammy in BB and while it was good I was not wowed by it. The colors looked washed out but I wasn’t able to find a remote for it so it could have been the settings.
the Pro150FD is 60". the Pro1150 and Pro110 are the 50" elites.
you can get a much better deal through the forum sponsor like roman at Invision on the 6010 saving you a good thousand$++ or so total. the bb guy is basically giving you 11.5% off msrp which if you get a bestbuy reward coupon you can get 12% off so it is a very average deal nothing special even from bb. 5750 then add tax right?
you can find a tilt mount at another sponsor monoprice.com for under $65
If you are still considering the 150fd, Axxis Audio, the text ad forum sponsor at the bottom of the page is an Elite Dealer with great service and great prices.
shaolin_master 09-09-07, 02:24 AM You thought the pio picture really outperformed the sammy 63?
Yeah and it wasn't even close. The depth of the picture was unreal, and the color was a lot more crisp and clear. Now granted most of these TV's are pulled from the box and setup at the stores with not much or even no calibration on the part of the guys setting them up, but if the Pioneer looks that much better out of the box i can't wait for whats in store once its setup correctly.
shaolin_master 09-09-07, 02:28 AM Thanks to everyone for the PM's and the info. Like i said i'm kind of a lurker and really only hop on when i'm researching for a purchase but this is the only place i'd ever go to for info, as the knowledge from the members is THE best.
Can anyone post some pictures of the 150FD with 360 or PS3 games. Preferably something like Gears of War? I'd love to see how they look.
Thanks
dssturbo1 09-09-07, 09:07 PM coming soon........:)
shaolin_master 09-28-07, 01:19 AM Been away as of late getting the house ready for sale and gaming too much... Anyone pick one of these bad boys up and if so, got pics?

I'll take a picture of mine this weekend. It looks beautiful! So does the picture, lol.
I have had an issue with buzz, though I think I'm getting used to it. It isn't loud, but its there in a quiet listening environment. The panel tends to beam the buzz directly forward, so listeners on the sides don't hear it. I don't think its going to be an issue in the long run, as it has almost stopped bothering me (just like a background house noise). Those movies should be played about 60 dB higher anyway ;)
Did I say the picture looks good? It looks great in movie mode right out of the box. Standard isn't bad either. I use power saver mode 2, to reduce power, and reduce the buzz. The slightly lowered brightness is also better in a full-dark room.
Now I just need more Discovery HD or HDDVD movies to watch. MMmmmm.
Justin Credible 10-29-07, 06:02 PM No posts in over a month....where did everybody go?

Most likely people probably moved over to one of the other more popular Pioneer 8g threads.
are the bars for this set black or grey? what if you watch alot of standard def on this unit? will burn in be an issue?
coltsfreak18 10-31-07, 07:24 AM I know this isn't in the right thread, but i dont want another thread asking the same questions. I am in the market for a 150fd, but the only store near me that has them only shows pioneers. in the broadcast you couldnt tell the difference between the 5080 and the 110 (which was on display). I want to see other brands next to the pio. help??
optivity 10-31-07, 07:40 AM Almost any PDP will render a satisfying HD image. After owning a Panasonic TH-50PX50U for two years and a Pioneer PRO-150FD for two months, while I still enjoy watching the Panasonic PDP, IMO the Pioneer display excels in every category: color accuracy, color saturation, black levels, shadow detail, shades of gradation and overall feature set.
If you choose either a 5080HD or the 110FD, you will not be sorry.
