On 08/01 I purchased my 1st HDTV it is a Samsung 56in dlp RPTV 1080p (hl-s5687w) I got it as an open box for $1400.00. I love the HD quality but my SD sucks. Anyway I just noticed CC has the Panasonic 50in Plasma (th-50px75u) for $1750.00. I guess I am looking for some opinions and people who have 1st hand knowledge about the 2 tv's. I sit about 15' away from the current tv and if I get the plasma I'll be about 17'-18' away. Does anyone know which tv looks better. Should I pay, (or would you pay) the extra $350 for plasma even though I would be losing 6in on screen size? oh yea the panny is a 720p w/o a pc input..even though I dont currently use it. All help is appreciated.

I've always like plasma technology over DLP. DLP is going to slowly phase out. DLP's put a great picture, however, bulb replacements can make your television more expensive over the long run. Also DLP's are not as bright and the viewing angles aren't great. However, they excell in overall movie theater experience. It represents natural skin tones and detail, but blacks aren't as deep as plasmas. The 75U would be an upgrade in book. I would give it a shot! Plus you can either mount or place it on stand. With a DLP you are limited in having it on a stand.

Thanks for the response. Do you think I would be able to tell a difference in 1080p vs. 720p? Also If I was playing a 1080p game on xbox or watching a hd dvd would it downscale to 720p. Thanks for any help I am new to all this and just want to make sure I end up buying/keeping the right one.

At your seating position. No. You are better off saving money and go with 720/768p.

I posted the wrong viewing distance. My viewing distance ranges from 9.5 to 13 feet.

bevans,
Not sure, but I think posting of price is taboo on this forum. HOWEVER, FYI, paying what you quoted for the Panny at CC is to high. I got my 50PX75U for less (let's just say somewhere between your pricing of the Samsung DLP and the Panny plasma).
BTW, I'm loving every second of my Panny purchase. My viewing distance is 13 feet in our bedroom and it's perfect.
