View Full Version : DEN vs SF on ESPN-HD MNF
primetimeguy 08-13-07, 08:28 PM Must be a small audience watching this game since there is no thread started yet. I just walked in and didn't see more than a few seconds but looked like a lot of the same ESPN artifacting here, maybe a tad better. Watching on E*, 57" RPCRT at 10ft.
ABCTV99 08-13-07, 10:50 PM Watching on Comcast I was going to say the opposite I thought it looked a lot better than last year. I'm not seeing any swimming grass and the closeups actually look pretty good. But then again it'll be interesting to see what people from other providers say.
sandiegojoe 08-13-07, 10:59 PM loks pretty good on D*
good game too. lots of good offense from both teams.\
that split screen is awful. I'm sitting like 1 foot from my tv every time it comes on (and that's on a big screen tv)
i figure they'll get a lot of complaints.
rkunces 08-13-07, 11:01 PM Looks very good compared to the Dodgers game on ESPN2HD right now.
Snickering Hound 08-14-07, 12:06 AM Looked good, except they kept cutting away from the game over and over again with sideline interviews and that awful split screen.
ESPN covers pro football like they're a 9yr old with ADD loaded with sugar, they were jumping all over the place and never, ever giving a play by play.
If the regular season is like this, I'm tuning out.
Plasmacat 08-14-07, 12:53 AM I will never watch MNF again if it continues like tonight's game. They barely showed the game - more interested in obnoxious yapping, showing the 3 moron announcers, yakking about Bill Walsh etc. etc. and that split screen with the postage stamp size game window - yechh!

I'm thinking the producers decided that since preseason football doesn't count they'd just cover it like it was a NFL Today with a scrimmage happening to be going on in the background.

I agree what little I watched I thought it looked pretty good especially compared to last year. D* sub
I WANT MORE 08-14-07, 07:36 AM This is precisely why I watch while listening to the broadcast on Sirius. Most tv announcers aren't worth listening to IMO.
nakedeye 08-14-07, 08:15 AM Looked leaps and bounds better than the previous nights Phillies game.
That being said, it is rare ESPN does a day game. I think the light level makes a HUGE difference with them, moreso that CBS.
Also does anyone else notice a color shift with ESPN? Colors are almost anyoingly vivid and seem like they have a purple hue to them. Been there since day one.

I agree I thought the light level made a huge difference in the PQ, as I saw a little bit of noise in some of the shadows on the field. I did notice the colors appeared especially saturated, but I'm not sure that's a bad thing I kinda like the colors to pop a little bit, though I didnt notice the bluish hue as much -- probably the extreme sunlight color temperature at that time of day (late afternoon with the sun behind the mountains is gonna give you some real harsh blues).
The Niner's uni's were EXTREMELY colorful and sharp :)

I did watch a bit more of the game later and I will say it looked better than most ESPN NFL broadcasts. I agree with the lighting maybe helping because to me I think the same issues were there, just harder to see. Colors also did seem a bit too vivid. Camera shots of the kickoffs were still bad in my opinion and I saw a good amount of mosquito noise around players on most pre-snap shots. But that could be an E* compression issues too.

SF, DEN, and Motor Mouth Michelle. Even with Pre-season, I tuned in to see football. Not Motor Mouth! Let's hope someone stuffs a sock in her mouth, before the regular season.
First ESPN keeps Kornhiser (or what ever his name is), and now this.

Both ESPN1 and ESPN2 looked great on Time Warner Cable in Maine last night. Very sharp.

Wolfie -
Just in case you're interested, they're wearing throwback uniforms this season in honor of Bill Walsh.
I watched a little bit of the game. PQ looked pretty good to me. But...

Part of me is willing to give them a break since it's preseason, but the format was virtually the same last year. It was like I was trying to watch the game at someone's house and people were carrying on other conversations over the action. MNF used to be a weekly ritual for me but I cut back because of their lousy format.

Amen brother. You would think that ESPN would get someone who actually enjoys watching football to be a color commentator. At least Dennis Miller was a fan, and had a good background knowledge of the NFL. Kornheiser seems to just be waiting for a break in the action so he can crack some lame joke.
C'mon ESPN, you have some of the very best NFL programming on the air. How could you screw up so badly with Monday Night Football.
ABCTV99 08-16-07, 12:46 AM What's funny is despite all the criticism on this board, some of ESPN's routinely harsh web blogging critics (who almost never have anything to spew but cynicism and facetiousness) actually praised the new crew Monday Night Football Review (http://deadspin.com/sports/monday-night-football/wait--a-tolerable-monday-night-football-broadcast-289278.php) , so I think the jury is still out. I personally think it's a improvement Jaws is a great analyst and Tirico is one of the smoothest broadcasters out there. Tony...is Tony, he's that third guy (who honestly by his own admission may not be around maybe even after this season - and had serious reservations about doing this seasons as he hates flying), he's just kinda there.
