Hi folks,
I've never owned nor lived with anyone who owned a home theatre system, so this is all pretty new to me. I've been reading these forums and elsewhere on the net, and I came up with what I figured would be the best placement in my situation. Limited space is always an issue, but I was wondering if y'all had any suggestions as to where to put the speakers instead, or if I should change my furniture/TV layout altogether.
System is the Onkyo HTIB SR-600, and I figured I'd mount the surround speakers into the walls. Other than that, I think the diagram is pretty clear.
Your input and tips are much appreciated.

Hey Andy
without the ability to really tune your surround system your gonna have a hard time getting the sound you want, mostly because of the sitting position and the fact that the TV is in the corner of the room.
If it were me i would try to put the surrounds alittle farther back (i'm assuming your sitting on the left couch) so that the surrounds are physically behind your ears.

Agreed with above. Your room setup is pretty much identical to the one in our den, where my wife gets to make the decisions. (she stays out of the real theater room in the basement discussion all together).
The sound pretty much sucks compared to an optimized setup. With the seating arrangement you'll never really be pointing your ears right at the center channel speaker head on, and no matter what you do, things will never be just right.
Experiment with the rears. I think I, too would put them a little further back, and you might even try reversing the channels and bouncing the sound off of the back walls, pointing the speakers directly rearward. Might surprise you.
Also, the sub may or may not be in a good location. No way to know without moving it around and experimenting. Again - in our sit, it is behind the TV because thats where she wants it, but in the theater room, the subs are behind the viewer on the far wall because that is where the response is best.

I have a similar setup in my home, with the TV in the corner of a room (I think this is pretty common in old houses where the fireplace is in the way of the perfect TV placement, and we all know we don't want to put the TV too high above the fireplace). I too am trying to find out the best surround sound solution. The difference with my room is that i have a sectional couch in the opposite corner of the room from the TV, and it is right against the wall. Does anybody have any thoughts on getting one of the single speaker virtual surround systems? Will it work when the TV is in one corner and you sit in another corner? I know those are typically not as good as having real surround sound, but in my situation (and for andythejerk), would it be as good as coming up with an imprecise surround sound speaker placement? Really, i'm just trying to find something that is better than nothing. I definitely don't want to pay a few thousand for something that makes the sound worse. Any thoughts?
