Just wondering, with DirecTV's many RSNs available starting this fall in HD, will CI also be available in HD?

P.S.: While we're at it, any more rumors as to the NHL Network?

NHL network would be great. Is it supposed to be in HD, or lowly SD?

Shaw Cable (Canada) says it will have 200+ games in HD on Center Ice. I believe there were some last year on Dish.

NHL.com says the U.S. version of the NHL Network is "coming soon" -- the first I've seen from them that is WILL happen (Comcast could have paid the NHL a penalty and not launched the channel).

If the NHL Network indeed comes in time for the season, I'd assume it'll be SD.

Bell Expressvu (Canada) has aired over 250 HD games on Centre Ice for the past two seasons and with HD being used more I would expect this number to increase this year.

DirecTV only had select games on its 90s channels, which is why I'm wondering if it's going full-time HD now, since most RSNs (with the glaring omission of the NY-area channels, but that's another story) are going HD now.

D*, E*, and InDemand have all made HD games available for the last two years. Hopefully this year with DBS expanding they will carry more games. I really hope that Comcast will carry the games on GameHD from InDemand or I will not be subscribing this season

Bell Expressvu will have 4 HD channels for Centre Ice this season. So I would expect the # of games to increase quite a bit.

Assuming the new DirecTV bird goes online w/no problems i'd expect any NHL game that is produced in HD on a RSN DirecTV carries to be in the CI package. (I could see them doing a "Superfan" type thing like MLB/NFL, but that is my guess), nothing has been announced yet.

I just emailed Comcast again and they have no plans of adding any time of HD channel that would show anything from InDemand. Guess I'll be either changing providers in the next few months or not ordering CI this year

Here they show UFC from InDemand on an HD ppv channel. No other sports from them so far.

Are DirectTV's HD-RSNs on spotbeam or conus Transponders? I thought that they were on spotbeam since they were part of the MPEG4 locals. Of course they could go conus when D* launches their new HD plan in Sept.

Dish Network has their HD-RSN on Conus TPs, but half of them are on 129 and the others are on 61.5, so your average HD customer will only see about half of them if they are made available.

This is not very encouraging for those of us that are looking forward to full-time Center Ice HD:

You’ll even get some games in blazing HD*.

It would seem odd to me that we wouldnt have a huge increase this year on DirecTV with all the sports networks being picked up on HD. Take Altitude for example, Directv has announced it'll go national in the fall and all the home games for the avs are broadcasted on ALtitude HD. I guess we'll wait and see. *fingers crossed*

Not all are - and not all have ALL their games in HD.

Cable companies and satellite providers are still trying to squeeze in national full-time channels. Bandwidth won't really be wide open for it until next year.

I agree, if the RSN's HD versions are available nationally (as I believe they advertised), then I don't see why the HD games wouldn't be open for CI subscribers. They might have to add one or two nightly channels with the Canadian feed for some games as they always do, but they certainly should have the capacity. Now this doesn't get in to the subject of the NY and Philly stations that still balk at allowing their feeds on satellites, but those games are often picked up on Canadian stations.

My only real concern is that last year on VS. and the CBC games, the HD feeds were never picked up on any of the 'spare' channels such as 94 or 95. The second VS. games on the HD channel were often Canadian feeds and ended up in SD even though the HD channel was kept on and the HD version was showing on Canadian services. I hope there is not a rule or lack of an agreement which prevents Canadian broadcasts in HD from being televised here.

If I had to guess, I would say there is no agreement preventing the broadcasts. Just the broadcasters here don't want to bother with it. D* manages the CI package so horribly (at least over the past few seasons) that I wouldn't waste much time anticipating what they will do with it now.

Can't argue with that statement. I still don't understand why they don't open the feeds from both markets when there are two versions of the same game available anyway.

I was never able to get a real answer out of them. The best I was ever told was that the contract only allows for one feed of the game. Guess Charlie Ergen got the better deal for his customers while D* continued to sleep at the wheel then. I don't believe it had anything to do with contracts. I think it had everything to do with them not caring at all about the package.

Until you miss entire periods because the channel they turned on for the package is wrong, or covering some previous programming that has not finished, while a channel that had the game from the very beginning stays dark.

The frustrating part of that is that I am with D* almost exclusively for sports (NFLST). Since they don't compete (or at least haven't until next month) with E* and cable for movie channels, I expect them to at least lead in sports. That is why I have them. I sure hope they take it more seriously this winter.

My best case scenario is that now that they have the HD capacity and suddenly will be real competitors with E* etc. even with movie channels, they will take this all seriously. My worst fear is that they will continue to assume that they have the sports fans stuck with them thanks to NFLST and do not need to take anything else seriously since those fans won't leave them anyway.

Again, most of the RSNs offer games in HD - but not ALL of the games on these are broadcast in HD. Here in Minnesota we got 11 Wild games in HD last year on FSN North and they say that they will at least double that this year. That means we still probably will get less than half of the games in HD.

Obviously D* or anyone else can't offer a game in HD if no one televises it that way. I feel bad about your Wild games, it sounds like the local FSRN is behind the curve, here in Denver all Avs home games are in HD, not sure if any road games will be that way this year. In a few markets (NY) I think nearly all games are in HD. I only would expect D* to offer games televised in HD to us in HD. That is one of the reasons that I would like to see both teams feeds available. I am sure in some cases this year, the 'selected' D* telecast might only be in SD but the other teams' market telecast might be in HD. I would be nice to be able to choose.

I am really curious as to how D* will handle this issue (visiting RSN shows in HD, home RSN doesn't) due to their obsession with showing only home team broadcasts all the time. I have emailed them several times about this issue and they refuse to change. <old_man_rant>I wish they would do what Primestar (anybody remember them?) did for NHLCI and have a thirty channel range where one channel was for each team. That channel would have that team's broadcast on it or the opposing team's broadcast if that team's wasn't available (e.g. channel 557=Sharks would have FSNBA broadcast unless they weren't showing it and then it would have other team's broadcast). If you wanted the other team's broadcast for some reason, you could just go to their channel. This was really nice because you would always know exactly what channel your team was on. But then D* bought them out for the sole purpose of shutting them down, that's capitalism for you...</old_man_rant>

I am aware of that, that is why I don't understand why D* does things the way they do. Obviously the contract can be written to allow both feeds. Let's hope they allow that this year, at least for HD feeds. Unfortunately (at least for me) E* doesn't offer NFLST too.

“FSN plans to bring its viewers at least 70 games this season with 36 of them available in High Definition.”

I'm just trying to figure out if Directv will have alot more games in HD this year. If they're launching all those sports channels in HD, and you get the NHL center ice package it would seem to me that those sports channels would then be showing their games on the sports channels in HD if available. I'm just trying to find out if that's indeed the case before ordering Directv.

My son and I are diehard hockey fans and the only HD games we can currently get on Time-warner are the Bruins on NESN. We don't even get Versus in HD. If launching all those sports channels in HD means more hockey in HD then count me in because watching hockey games in SD is just painful! I just haven't gotten any sort of confirmation yet and don't want to pull the trigger only to find the sports channels blacked out while the games are broadcast in SD on the Center ice channels.

Does anyone that had Center ice remember if the games were simulcast on their prospective sports channels along with the Center ice channels or were they blacked out on the sports channels?

I don't think I looked very often last year, but in the past, they have had both the channel in the CI package and the RSN open if the RSN channel is the one used in the CI package. I will not say for sure that is always true, since it is usually easier switch up and down the channels during commercials at the CI locations. A LOT of the game telecasts are from Canada, (TSN & CBC) so those games do not have matching RSN channels open. Who knows how they will handle the HD versions.

Anyone know if there is any chance FIOS TV will have Center Ice this year?

From http://www.longhornxp.net/Verizon.html

One big drawback with Verizon FIOS TV is the issue with InDemand. InDemand is a company that offers the two InHD channels along with PPV On Demand titles and many of the Sports subscriptions. InDemand is partly owned by several of the top cable companies such as Time Warner Cable, Bright House Networks, Comcast Cable among others. Because of this they are pulling some unfair pricing tactics that are keeping DirecTV and Dish Network from offering the two InHD channels but these tactics are hurting Verizon more as its not just the two InHD channels but the sports subscriptions as well.

DirecTV and Dish Network have deals in place for the sports packages while Verizon is a new entrant without a deal so they are getting the hard end of the stick. I expect this to be handled quicker than most think but until that time the following channels and packages aren't on Verizon FIOS TV.

The two InHD channels of course.

Sports Packages include the following below.

MLB Extra Innings.
NBA League Pass.
NHL Center Ice.
Nascar InCar.
MLS Direct Kick.

Until this InDemand issue gets cleared up these sports packages listed above and the two InHD channels will "not" be offered on Verizon FIOS TV.

I would assume any Dish sports HD offerings would timeshare with the upcoming 9 HD PPV channels. With some creative thinking I bet they can offer the RSN HDs, PPV HD, and CI/NBA/whatever else HD. Of course, they'd actually have to offer the sports pack.. MLB EI anyone?

I can almost guarantee you will get at least more HD hockey because you will get Versus. D* will be lighting up the new satellite within the next few weeks, and everyone is certain Versus/Golf will be one of the first HD channels added. All the Versus games this year will be in HD. Also, almost certainly you will still get NESN in HD. Right now D* is only broadcasting NESN in HD in Boston, but it will shortly make NESN available in HD to the surrounding areas that currently get it in SD.

Last year D* also showed at least a few games a week from the CI package in HD, and everyone is expecting, though D* certainly hasn't confirmed it, that there will be CI in HD.

So, switching to D* will certainly give you more than you had with TWC.

Yep, if Center Ice comes through with D* in HD, still won't get most of the Eastern Division in HD [Phila, NYR, NYI, NJ] and Buffalo due to competitive issues. Industry, that is, not hockey.
Don't worry, there's lots of other hockey oot there, eh?

i've been a centre ice subscriber with directv for 9 years, but HATE the fact they don't show both feeds (called many times to complain, myself). now with the new bird rendering my hd tivo useless soon i realized this is my chance to check out Dish -

a few questions
are both feeds (home/away) a standard with Dish-can i expect that this year?
Does Dish show Hockey Nite in Canada?
Any word on the NHL Network coming to Dish (heck, i'll settle for sd)
does Dish show centre ice games in HD, besides vs and hdnet??

anyone use the vip 722 dvr from dish? how do you like it??

thanks so much- i've spent the better part of this afternoon and tonite trying to research this and see if i should make the switch.

eddieras,

I am in the exact same situation as you. I had actually ordered Dish but when they arrived they didn't deliver what the rep had promised. So I canceled the deal. I believe that any NHL game broadcast on an FSN regional channel in HD will be turned on for a CI subscriber. The only issue might be in your own market where they won't broadcast the visiting teams coverage, SD or HD, when they are playing your team. Likewise, when your team is playing away and that market broadcast in HD and yours does not, you will be blacked out on the other teams HD telecast. I'm lucky as I am located out of my teams market so I will get all of the games they play in HD.

If you have learned anything contrary to this let me know as I'm getting ready to order my D* MPEG4 stuff.

anyone else have any insight to the following:

Does Dish show Hockey Nite in Canada - or is this always on Centre Ice regardless of carrier?

I can answer only dish ?'s

Yes they since the lockout have shown both feeds to every game if available I usually watch the candian feed if thats an option.

HNIC is always broadcasted on ch 540 for the enitre night. The only dowfall is some night after the end of the second game they would shut the feed off instead of showing the after hours show whatever its called.

I am also planning on moving to D* but hate the fact of losing the game feed options

It is now available to be ordered on DirecTV. The CSR i talked to (i think it was in the Philippines) didn;t know about HD, and it was somewhat telling to me that she said the channels it will be on are 764-776. That's only 13 channels. That says to me that they are NOT going to be doing HD the same way they are with sunday ticket, because 13 channels just isn't enough.

Hopefully something gets worked out.

How is watching hockey on on Plasma/LCD is the picture streaky? this question is coming from a person still in CRTland. I do have an HD Sat receiver but no big screen w/ HD (will in the next couple months as I'm moving into a bigger house) I worked in the video biz for many years and can't stand "seeing" defect in the picture streaking, pixelation.....It would drive me crazy and everything I read in these forums makes me want to stay with my poor 27' CRT. I mostly watch regular TV and lots of hockey, little DVD and no HD-DVD/BRay. I hear Plasma is better overall for motion and SD content but LCD is catching up, what have you guys found for the best combination for SD/HD Hockey?

How is watching hockey on on Plasma/LCD is the picture streaky?

As one with a 36" Sony HD CRT(equivalent to 33" in 16X9), I have looked into extensively as the WAF wants a LCD/Plasma. I have seen this streaking on all of my friends sets, but they all claim it's because their LCD/Plasma sets are much bigger (42" to 60") than mine.

I saw a Sony LCD at a big box store that did not streak on HNIC broadcasts. So I checked out HD hockey at a Sony Store where all their models were on 1 wall. Only the most expensive model did not streak.

As for plasmas, the cheap models all made HD hockey look like widescreen SD. So I told the wife to save for a top of the line from Pioneer, no way am I going to watch hockey on a HD set that makes the picture look worse than our old 27" SD Sony XBR

Sweet, Sabres in HD at least once a month? I guess I can live with that.

Now, if only Comcast here in Florida would let me purchase the CI package NOW. They told me it was not yet offered for this year.

Despite the double negative :) I think you're saying that they haven't set up the programming yet for this season?

That doesn't seem right...I seem to remember them running specials this time of year for early sign-ups...

Perhaps my memory is failing me at a young age...or perhaps they've downgraded the importance of hockey...shame either way.

InDemand no longer exists. It is now MOJO. No more baseball, hockey, or any other mainstream sport.

That was InHD and InHD2, they were cable HD channels that carried all HD content. Some of that was from InDemand and its owners. Those channels were merged at the end of 2006 and was rebranded to MojoHD this past spring. Mojo was a block of original programming on InHD and was expanded to take over the entire thing.

InDemand is a completely different beast. InDemand is a provider of PPV events and Season pass sports packages to most cable companies.

See www.indemand.com for more information.

See www.mojohd.com for info about the HD cable channel.

For this discussion we are talking about the NHL Center Ice package that is offered from InDemand via your local cable company. D* and E* have their own packages with the same name, but under separate contracts. E* tends to offer both home and away feeds and both offer more HD games.

Folks - I've heard we're all in limbo with the 07/08 Center Ice info because the league (Gary & Co.) are waiting until around Sept. 19th to make a big NHL marketing push. Included with that are the details around Center Ice availability. Also if you're TV provider doesn't offer it you can always sign up for the Online Center Ice option. They'll be streaming up to 700kbps which provides viewable hockey at 640x480. As for the HD offering on Center Ice, the league intends to ramp that up as well.

Didn't it only list a single station as "NHL"? Many people are guessing is the NHL Network channel.

Pro sports games on the RSNs with the sports package are always blacked out. You would only get the pre-game and post-game shows. You need the subscription to the CI package to get the out of market games. I believe the RSN package will only get you your local RSN games which in your case are Florida teams. Not sure which area you are in in terms of which channel is your 'local' RSN. If you get the CI package you should receive all of the telecasts you are looking for.

Unfortunately not "all", but most -- also, you won't necessarily get the NJDevils broadcast (and announcers) always; instead, you will get the other team's -- they pick and choose "out of market" broadcasts on CI, not both teams' broadcasts....overall, CI is great and we are all hoping much more HD (including CBC Hockey Night in Canada on Sat. nights)!!!!!

are we talking dish or directv? dish has shown both team feeds on out of market games, while directv only shows one feed - and if memory serves, its mostly the home teams' feed. i've had CI with directv for 9 seasons and this is the case. However, if i can confirm that dish will again be showing both feeds of games (out of market of course) then i'll make the jump.

That is true, at least in previous years you would see the game for sure (which was the point of my posting), but not necessarily on the NY channels. Often they have used Canadian feeds such as CBC, but you should see all the games. No one knows if D* will allow us to watch both market feeds this year like Dish has done. D* has not announced it yet. The hope of everyone with D* is that since the RSN's HD channels will all be national beams that they will always open up the HD channel for both markets, which for most of the NY/NJ teams would mean a LOT of HD feeds from their local sports networks.

AFAIK, Dish does will not have national feeds for each of the HD RSN's so if you don't live in NY/NJ you may not get an HD feed for each game unless they provide some alternative channel for HD hockey games. If they do that, I wouldn't think they would provide two HD feeds for the same game, so they may choose for you with HD. D* may do the same for games with Canadian channels which are not full time national RSN's. but I don't think anyone knows for sure how they will do it this year. Likely D* and Dish don't even know yet for sure.

Huh?

When I signed up, they told me I'd get MSG in HD with the CI and HD package. Was I lied to?

Where the **** are Rangers fans in central NJ supposed to get games in HD?

The garbage cable company in my town doesn't have it.
Dish at first told me they did, then when I called back said no, but maybe 1st quarter, when they ad a bunch of new HD channels. So if I'm lucky, maybe I'll get HD in time for the playoffs.

Now looking at this post it sounds like Direct TV isn't going to give me Rangers games in HD either.

Or will I get them, because MSG is considered a local channel for me?

Of course, I'm in an apartment complex, and found out they may have no place with clear line of site to install the dish on my building anyway.

Also keep in mind(and this got me VERY VERY angry the other day) is that "supposedly" there will be different Groups to the RSN's. So for instance like myself who lives in Sacramento, CA and we get FSN Bay Area for Sharks, Giants, and A's(I ONLY care about the Sharks) in SD, we WILL NOT be getting them in HD as D* is going to continue to spotbeam the HD to local area codes/towns(SF/SJ) as they do currently. They won't show the games all time, just on games, or any for us outside the spotbeam. See the copied info below........

If this is true I will be calling D* EVERY DAY to get some Sharks in HD!!!!

Saw this posted by someone else (who happens to say he is a DTV employee) that this is the schedule for the rollout of the RSN's in HD...not sure if this is new info or has been around for a while.

My local cable co gives me a channel called THD, I believe it means Team HD which is an InDemand channel. InDemand is the same company that provides the NHL Center Ice package to cable companies.

According to my rep, anytime there is a broadcast NHL game in in HD it will default to the THD channel. Now I know there are several games per day in HD so I am thinking it will be random as to which game or team is shown. I didn't have this channel last year so I don't know exactly how it will work.

I have INHD and last year the HD versus game would default to the INHD channel. As the end of the season came, basketball games in HD defaulted to that channel instead of hockey.

I don't know about anyone else but I'm getting sick and tired of waiting for someone (D* or E*) to decide what's going to happen with Center Ice as it pertains to HD broadcasts! I'm interested in getting satellite for CI and I will go with whoever has more HD games. The season starts in less than 2 weeks and we're no closer to knowing what's going to happen.

D* is supposed to be launching RSN's on conus which in theory would provide a significant amount of HD games. I'm assuming that the HD broadcasts wouldn't be blacked out(As Fredfa also believes) since there isn't a superfan option with CI. I get conflicting info. from CSR's on this. Also, Comcast sportsnet Mid-Atlantic (The Capitals network) is supposed to be available in HD.

On the otherhand E* has reported via a recent Charlie Chat that MOST CI games will be available in HD as well as the NHL network. The problem is that negotiations haven't been finalized as of yet. Also, Comcast sportsnet Mid-Atlantic is not available in HD(Not sure if this will effect the claim of most games being in HD or not) on E*.

There seem to be pros and cons to both providers and I'm just trying to get definitive information before taking the plunge. You would think that something would be announced by now. Come on guys get the word out!:(

I'm with you. I have cable, but subscribed to Dish Network last year for hockey season. I am really interested in finding out if either of them will carry TSN and CBC games in HD. Well, that magazine was finalized 2 months ago, so there's a chance things have changed since then. Hopefully they will at least stick a game or 2 where they are sticking some MLB HD games now, or turn of the blackouts on the HD RSN's that are carrying the games for center ice subscribers.

This is Cablevision's current stance on the CI subject:

Cablevision has offered customers access to the NHL Center Ice package for many years, and is pursuing the rights to offer these out-of-market games again during the 2007-2008 season. We will provide updates to our customers as additional information becomes available. (http://optimum.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/optimum.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=2094&p_created=1159453317&p_sid=iKlJVGMi&p_accessibility=&p_redirect=&p_lva=&p_sp=cF9zcmNoPSZwX3NvcnRfYnk9JnBfZ3JpZHNvcnQ9JnBfcm93X2NudD0 yJnBfcHJvZHM9JnBfY2F0cz0mcF9wdj0mcF9jdj0mcF9zZWFyY2hfdHlwZT1 hbnN3ZXJzLnNlYXJjaF9ubCZwX3BhZ2U9MSZwX3NlYXJjaF90ZXh0PWNlbnR lciBpY2UgSEQ*&p_li=&p_topview=1)

Again, let's wait until the last minute to figure this out, idiots. Eh, at least I have Rangers/Devils/Isles in HD for now. I wouldn't bother signing up for CI unless it had a lot of HD games.

Oh, and the first game of the year (9/29) won't be on in my area (since I don't have CBC or HDNet). So I guess I have to go to London to see it. Way to go, NHL, you're doing a fantastic job marketing your sport. ;)

It is showing up as being shown on www.NHL.TV Center Ice (the internet version of CI) so I'm assuming it will be on Regular (TV) CI. The Sunday game is not showing up since it is one Versus. HDNet's games are not exclusive.

Dish network has updated there website to allow you to order NHL CI. Early bird price is $149.00 if ordered before Oct. 9th. No word on if this means the NHL network is a go or not. They may have finalized a deal without NHL network so as not to lose CI completely. The inclusion of NHL network was apparently the final sticking point. Subject: NHL Centre Ice

Dear Melinda,

Any word if NHL Center Ice will be available on Time Warner?
I have called Time Warner, and the CSR's have no definite word.
I received a call last night from a Time Warner CSR asking if I was still interested in purchasing NHL Center Ice. I said yes. She told me that they have been getting a lot calls for that product.
Any help in this matter would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

HD games have been available for the last two seasons, but your MSO needs to hook up to InDemand's "Game HD" channel. Last season it alternated between NBA LP HD and NHL CI HD.

Bright House Networks has announced it is introducing four new high definition television channels Oct. 2 and will add the NHL Network to its Digital Sports Pack product in November.

The company is adding TBS HD, HGTV HD, The History Channel HD and the Food Network HD, bringing the total number of high definition channels it offers to 24. More channels are expected to be introduced to Central Florida customers in March.

The high definition channels are offered at no additional charge. Customers will also incur no extra charge for the Digital Sports Pack with the addition of NHL Network. The price will remain at $1.99 per month.

Bright House serves more than 850,000 customers in Central Florida.

It seems as if the only feeds available tonight for the 2 games are the TSN feed for Ottowa @ Toronto and RDS (french TSN) for Montreal @ Carolina unless the Hurricanes' website is incomplete in it's broadcast information. Agree with the last umpteen posts. Here it is 2007 and HD hockey is still sparse. When the full digital transition kicks in and there is much more HD penetration we damn well better have a full CI HD package and there really shouldn't be any NHL hockey broadcast in anything but HD.

And one comment in a previous post was there is no leadership under Bettman. There is leadership but the way and direction he wants it to go, not what the majority of die hard hockey fans who are the ones who really support the NHL want things to go. Bettman isn't listening to the fans at all, really he isn't. IMO he is a POS and needs to STFU or have someone tell him to F off.

WHAT???

You mean you don't like the new spandex jerseys?

Or the fact that most non-checking inline leages even let their players aget away with more than you can in the NHL now.

Or let's ad another rule every year, just for the sake of adding a rule? Ok I admit a FEW of the changes I do like?

4 games in HD on E* tonight

Florida @ NY Rangers
NJ @ TB
Colorado @ Nashville
St Louis @ Phoenix

Is it that the HD RSN's arnt all online yet or is D* just being dicks?

I am watching the Toronto/Ottawa game and just got infuriated when I saw the "available in HD banner" go across the screen,

I have the HDnet coverage and INDemand Game HD of the Rangers vs panthers. The Indemand feed is Florida FSN. The HDnet PQ and of course DD 5.1 sound is far better than FSN Florida. The FSN feed has a LOT of artifacting and HDnet is flawless. I am guessing PQ on the Game HD channel will vary depending on PQ of the broadcaster.

yep, very disappointing. i have both the sports pack with all the rsn's as well as center ice. getting rsn's in hd loses a lot of its appeal if every hd game is blacked out, especially when i know the sd version is not blacked out.

i am holding out hope that this is an issue with comcast versus d* and that we'll get the hd version when fsn stations or nesn are involved.

five are, including three that broadcast nhl games. the blackhawks were blacked out on hd tonight. tomorrow, both the bruins and capitals play on rsn's that have been lit up in hd nationally. i would guess comcast washington will black out the caps high def game. hopefully, nesn will not black out the bruins.

I have Center Ice and the Sports Pack and CSN Chicago HD was blacked out for the Chicago-Minnesota game. How lame! While the SD feed via Center Ice was okay for SD, even if the game wasn't actual HD on CSN, it would still be upconverted SD.

Let's see if DirecTV gets their act together with NESN. If not, time to make some calls.

Noticed that too. I know a lot of time D* gets blame for stuff that is out of their control, but a lot of times it is their fault. So, who is to blame for the deal last night? How is it possible that the SD version is not blacked out while the HD is? This seems like a D* screw up to me. Not to mention D* screwed up CBC's HNIC feed by putting it up on two seperate channels.

Just received a weird response from DirecTV regarding last night's snafu:

Thanks for writing. I will be happy to assist you with this. I’m very sorry to hear about the problems you’ve experienced watching the game in High Definition (HD).

Normally, the Blackhawks vs Wild SD game on CSN Chicago would have been blacked out to you, because it was an out-of-market game on a Regional Sports Net, but during the NHL CENTER ICE free preview, we are allowed to show it. Unfortunately, the HD feed was not covered by the free preview.

DIRECTV did feature three games in HD last night, the Panthers vs Rangers on channel 96 or 79 (based on zip code), the Avalanche vs Predators on channel 97, and the Blues vs Coyotes on channel 96.

I know this can be frustrating, and that blackout rules can be somewhat confusing, but I hope you understand that sports blackouts and game availability are controlled by the leagues, sports associations, and networks that purchase the rights to broadcast individual games. To protect their rights, we must enforce the blackouts and availability mandated by them.

Is this not an outright lie? There were no HD hockey games last night for those that had HDNet blacked out and had to watch via MSG.

Definitely a lie, I checked there a few times throughout the evening. I even had to hunt to find my Devils in SD since D* listed channel 766 as Upcoming: Islanders v. Sabres all night. It really had the Devils though. Hopefully tonight will usher in the new HD era, if D* would start providing CBC and TSN HD, I might have to give up complaining altogether.

Is this correct or is this a D* problem? By NHL rules should I be blacked out?

Thanks,

you weren't blacked out. d* used the home team feed for this game. i assume that because they don't as yet have an hd version of channel 643 (which the game was on), that is why we only received an sd feed.

Sharks/Avs game not in HD tonight either on D*. The HD channel lists an xm radio station instead.

It was available in HD on D* on the normal spot beam for the Altitude coverage area. Altitude has been in HD on the spot beam for a year or so now on D* and is on the list of RSN's to be made national this fall, but for the time being it is only HD locally. It is obvious that D* has not yet set up the HD channels (764-1 etc.) with the lone exception of the one game last night. I have no clue how soon D* will get the HD portion of NHLCI working properly, given the loss of signal for a time in the OT of the Toronto game, it is pretty obvious they haven't even worked out the kinks on the SD side yet. My guess is they are a bit overwhelmed or underprepared (your choice) for all of the new channels they are adding, the NFLST and the NHLCI and the NHLCI is apparently a low priority. I would suggest that you continue to flood them with calls and emails about specific issues to make sure they get the message that we are waiting for things to get set up right. I sent them 5 emails in the last two days over specific issues and although I get the canned reply back, I have no doubt they know people are upset. Ultimately I am pretty sure they will get it right, but it may take some 'prompting' from their subscribers to make sure. Just my own $0,02, YMMV.

seeing how this "loss of signal" was right after the end of the game, i don't think it was a situation of working out the kinks. too coincidental for it to be anything other than incorrectly cutting the feed, believing the game was over. very frustrating that they mess this up as frequently as they do.

By "working out the kinks" what I meant was they obviously didn't have enough staff available to monitor the games and were using the computers and time to turn things on and off. I agree this is unacceptable and they need to be called on it. With enough complaints I would hope they would get their act together. Last year on the CBC games they usually kept the early and late games on the same channel, so that this was never an issue, but some 'Einstein' this year didn't do that. My guess is they are swamped with the new channels, NFLST and the NHLCI start up and just don't have enough people to handle it all. That does not give them a 'free pass', it means they were not prepared for all of this at the same time. I do think they will work it out with time, but then I am an optimist at times too, so what do I know?? In the meantime, slam them with calls and letters to let them know it does matter to subscribers.

Could someone who is a CI sunscriber and is in the FSN Bay Area but out of the spot beam report on whether it is shown on CI and not blacked out. Also, it might be shown on NESN in HD and therefore on CI. Same question goes for that scenario.
